Abstract:The problem of probability transformation is crucial for decision-making in Dempster-Shafer Theory of evidence. In this paper, a compromise method has been proposed for transforming basic probability assignment to probability function. The novel transformation method can acquire better balance between easy decision-making and high risk. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the rationality and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we define the weighted lower and upper possibilistic variances and covariances of fuzzy numbers. We also obtain their many properties similar to variance and covariance in probability theory. On the basis of the weighted lower and upper possibilistic means and variances, we present two new possibilistic portfolio selection models with tolerated risk level and holdings of assets constraints. The conventional probabilistic mean–variance model can be transformed to a linear programming problem under possibility distributions. Finally, an estimation method of possibility distribution is offered and a real example for portfolio selection problem is given to illustrate the usability of the approach and the effectiveness of our methods.

Abstract:Based on the diffusion equation,the transition probability density of stock prices is calculated by means of the Monte-Carlo method.Then,the confidence interval of future stoch prices based on a certain probability is obtained,and as an application,some risk analyses were conducted.The empirical analysis on Shanghai Stock-Market Index shows that the method is capable of correctly predicting stock price movements.

Abstract:The existing combination method for water quality prediction lacks of a framework approach and the probability prediction is always based on an assumption that water quality index follows certain probability distribution.A new method based on probability-combination for water quality prediction was proposed.The method combined the prediction results of different single methods through the use of Odds-Matrix method and it could improve the performances of prediction effectively.It was worth noting that the combination-forecast approach could be extended to new methods.The probability of prediction was established through statistical analysis of historical prediction data and hence the validation of the method was achieved along with interval estimation under certain confidence level.The Probability-Combination method based on gray model group and exponent smoothing was proposed for Jiukengkou,Zhejiang.Experimental results indicated that the combination-forecast approach performs better than single prediction method.The validity of probability establishment could be checked effectively.According to the results,the envelopes of water-quality curve under certain confidence level were derived.The prediction accuracy and stability could be improved effectively and probability results which could be the basis of the decision-making could also be given successfully by probability-combination.Furthermore,as a framework approach,it could add new prediction methods continuously.

Abstract:Value-at-Risk(VaR) is a commonly used tool to measure market risk, and also the basic tool of risk management. There are many methods for computing VaR. In this paper we consider the correlation of data, through overlapping data to group all the data to compute VaR. The calculated VaR is more approximate to the fact. In addition, the size of group is studied and it follows power-law. The Hang Seng Index is analyzed to find the reasonable size of data grouping.

Abstract:We develop a novel methodology to measure the difference between probability models. Unlike the parametric approach, this non-parametric approach can describe complex financial data without being limited to the uncertainty about specific moments or parameters. It can be applied to various probability distributions and is easy to use. For the special case of normal distributions, our method can be simplified to a parametric method which is less likely to make the type I error. Applying the technique to the S&P500 index, we find that our uncertainty measure displays a dual-peak feature and conveys distinct information to play a significant alarming role. The measure can also be applied to study the relationship between uncertainty and asset pricing.

Abstract:Abstract The traditional frequentist approach to hypothesis testing has recently come under extensive debate, raising several critical concerns. Additionally, practical applications often blend the decision-theoretical framework pioneered by Neyman and Pearson with the inductive inferential process relied on the p -value, as advocated by Fisher. The combination of the two methods has led to interpreting the p -value as both an observed error rate and a measure of empirical evidence for the hypothesis. Unfortunately, both interpretations pose difficulties. In this context, we propose that resorting to confidence distributions can offer a valuable solution to address many of these critical issues. Rather than suggesting an automatic procedure, we present a natural approach to tackle the problem within a broader inferential context. Through the use of confidence distributions, we show the possibility of defining two statistical measures of evidence that align with different types of hypotheses under examination. These measures, unlike the p -value, exhibit coherence, simplicity of interpretation, and ease of computation, as exemplified by various illustrative examples spanning diverse fields. Furthermore, we provide theoretical results that establish connections between our proposal, other measures of evidence given in the literature, and standard testing concepts such as size, optimality, and the p -value.

Abstract:When calculating the grounding current under DC bias, there are many uncertainties. Then an efficient calculation method based on point estimate method is proposed. This method can make the results more reasonable because it takes into account the uncertainties of input quantity and conditions. This paper will value the grounding resistances as variables, and use the point estimate method for the calculation of the grounding current under DC bias. The results are proved to be more realistic and satisfactory.

Abstract:This paper adopts parametric method, semiparametric method and nonparametric method to estimate the VaR of the futures market. In view that good news and bad news have different impact on the market volatility, we adopt EGARCH and TGARCH model in parametric method and adopt the first four order moments in semiparametric method. The nonparametric method is based on kernel function. The general financial markets only consider the downside VaR. This paper also introduces a new conception of the upside VaR for the first time and estimates both the downside VaR and the upside VaR with the above three methods. We adopt backtest to evaluate the power of each method. Our findings indicate that no matter it is downside VaR or upside VaR, the nonparametric method gains an advantage over the other two methods. So the nonparametric method has powerful meaning in reality.

Abstract:Tolerance analysis is increasingly becoming an important tool for mechanical design, process planning, manufacturing, and inspection. It provides a quantitative analysis tool for evaluating the effects of manufacturing variations on performance and overall cost of the final assembly. It boosts concurrent engineering by bringing engineering design requirements and manufacturing capabilities together in a common model. It can be either worst-case or statistical. It may involve linear or nonlinear behavior. Monte Carlo simulation is the simplest and the most popular method for nonlinear statistical tolerance analysis. Monte Carlo simulation offers a powerful analytical method for predicting the effects of manufacturing variations on design performance and production cost. However, the main drawbacks of this method are that it is necessary to generate very large samples to assure calculation accuracy, and that the results of analysis contain errors of probability. In this paper, a quasi-Monte Carlo method based on good point (GP) set is proposed. The difference between the method proposed and Monte Carlo simulation lies in that the quasi-random numbers generated by Monte Carlo simulation method are replaced by ones generated by the method proposed in this paper. Compared with Monte Carlo simulation method, the proposed method provides analysis results with less calculation amount and higher precision.
B-Value and Empirical Equivalence Bound: A New Procedure of Hypothesis Testing

Abstract:In this study, we propose a two-stage procedure for hypothesis testing, where the first stage is conventional hypothesis testing and the second is an equivalence testing procedure using an introduced Empirical Equivalence Bound. In 2016, the American Statistical Association released a policy statement on P-values to clarify the proper use and interpretation in response to the criticism of reproducibility and replicability in scientific findings. A recent solution to improve reproducibility and transparency in statistical hypothesis testing is to integrate P-values (or confidence intervals) with practical or scientific significance. Similar ideas have been proposed via the equivalence test, where the goal is to infer equality under a presumption (null) of inequality of parameters. However, in these testing procedures, the definition of scientific significance/equivalence can be subjective. To circumvent this drawback, we introduce a B-value and the Empirical Equivalence Bound, which are both estimated from the data. Performing a second-stage equivalence test, our procedure offers an opportunity to correct for false positive discoveries and improve the reproducibility in findings across studies.

Abstract:Classical test theory is firstly introduced,the mathematic model and the common calculation methods of Exam-paper Formation are analyzed,and an optimized random calculation method based on binomial distribution principle is put forword.In the composition of examination paper,difficulty coefficient as the main control index can solve the difficulty of paper control problem,and make the test average difficulty coefficient is close to normal distribution.The conclusion is test scores for the normal distribution,reliability was 83.22 through the simulation experiment.Test validity is high with expectations.

p-Value as the Strength of Evidence Measured by Confidence Distribution

Abstract:The notion of p-value is a fundamental concept in statistical inference and has been widely used for reporting outcomes of hypothesis tests. However, p-value is often misinterpreted, misused or miscommunicated in practice. Part of the issue is that existing definitions of p-value are often derived from constructions under specific settings, and a general definition that directly reflects the evidence of the null hypothesis is not yet available. In this article, we first propose a general and rigorous definition of p-value that fulfills two performance-based characteristics. The performance-based definition subsumes all existing construction-based definitions of the p-value, and justifies their interpretations. The paper further presents a specific approach based on confidence distribution to formulate and calculate p-values. This specific way of computing p values has two main advantages. First, it is applicable for a wide range of hypothesis testing problems, including the standard one- and two-sided tests, tests with interval-type null, intersection-union tests, multivariate tests and so on. Second, it can naturally lead to a coherent interpretation of p-value as evidence in support of the null hypothesis, as well as a meaningful measure of degree of such support. In particular, it places a meaning of a large p-value, e.g. p-value of 0.8 has more support than 0.5. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the wide applicability and computational feasibility of our approach. We show that our proposal is effective and can be applied broadly, without further consideration of the form/size of the null space. As for existing testing methods, the solutions have not been available or cannot be easily obtained.

Abstract:Objective To discuss the applicability of the conventional statistic analysis methods in minimization.Methods To compare the analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) test statistic with the statistic of randomization test.Monte Carlo technique was employed to simulate the distribution of F of ANCOVA and the relevant P value.Results The results of ANCOVA are extremely similar to those of randomization test.The simulation demonstrated that the F-value of ANCOVA conforms to the F-distribution and the P-value conforms to the uniform distribution.Conclusion If the constraints imposed by minimization are taken into consideration,the analysis of covariance will provide satisfactory analysis.
Accurate and Ultra-Efficient p-Value Calculation for Higher Criticism Tests

Abstract:In modern data science, higher criticism (HC) method is effective for detecting rare and weak signals. The computation, however, has long been an issue when the number of p-values combined ( K ) and/or the number of repeated HC tests ( N ) are large. Some computing methods have been developed, but they all have significant shortcomings, especially when a stringent significance level is required. In this paper, we propose an accurate and highly efficient computing strategy for four variations of HC. Specifically, we propose an unbiased cross-entropy-based importance sampling method ( IS C E ) to benchmark all existing computing methods, and develop a modified SetTest method (MST) that resolves numerical issues of the existing SetTest approach. We further develop an ultra-fast approach (UFI) combining pre-calculated statistical tables and cubic spline interpolation. Finally, following extensive simulations, we provide a computing strategy integrating MST, UFI and other existing methods with R package "HCp" for virtually any K and small p-values ( ∼ 10 - 20 ). The method is applied to a COVID-19 disease surveillance example for spatio-temporal outbreak detection from case numbers of 804 days in 3,342 counties in the United States. Results confirm viability of the computing strategy for large-scale inferences. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.

Abstract:Since its debut in the 18th century, the P-value has been an important part of hypothesis testing-based scientific discoveries. As the statistical engine accelerates, questions are beginning to be raised, asking to what extent scientific discoveries based on P-values are reliable and reproducible, and the voice calling for adjusting the significance level or banning the P-value has been increasingly heard. Inspired by these questions and discussions, here we enquire into the useful roles and misuses of the P-value in scientific studies. For common misuses and misinterpretations, we provide modest recommendations for practitioners. Additionally, we compare statistical significance with clinical relevance. In parallel, we review the Bayesian alternatives for seeking evidence. Finally, we discuss the promises and risks of using meta-analysis to pool P-values from multiple studies to aggregate evidence. Taken together, the P-value underpins a useful probabilistic decision-making system and provides evidence at a continuous scale. But its interpretation must be contextual, considering the scientific question, experimental design (including the model specification, sample size, and significance level), statistical power, effect size, and reproducibility.

Abstract:Traditional methods for analyzing system reliability involve the use of unit reliability and system composition. Probability theory-based calculations are subsequently made to obtain system reliability. However, these methods fail to consider the type of failure distribution that exists in system units, resulting in inaccurate system reliability calculations at any given time. For two systems that feature the same system reliability, these methods also fail to take into account the effect of differences in unit reliability on system reliability. The process in which system units go from a normal working state to a failure state can be described as a fuzzy process. In this study, introduced a novel method that based on fuzzy probability analyze system reliability. This method is based on the assumption that unit reliability is a fuzzy probability-based event and involves analyzing failure distribution membership function to determine the reliability of system units at any given time. The concepts of system failure probability (which is a characteristic quantity used to measure the effect of differences in unit reliability on system reliability) and integrated system reliability (which is a characteristic quantity that allows comprehensive evaluation of system reliability) are introduced. The proposed method was adopted in the reliability analysis of series, parallel, and compound systems. The results verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Bayesian p values are a popular and important class of approaches for Bayesian model checking. They are used to quantify the degree of surprise from the observed data given the specified data model and prior distribution. A systematic investigation is conducted to compare three Bayesian p values - the posterior predictive p value, the sampled posterior p value and the calibrated posterior predictive p value. Their general computation costs are compared, and several examples that incorporate both simple and complex Bayesian models are used to compare their frequency properties. It is recommended to use the sampled posterior p value because it is computationally least expensive and safest.
Comparison of Testability Verification Test Sample Size Determination Methods Based on Binomial Distribution

Abstract:The classical sample size determination methods in the testability verification test are introduced, including single, double, multiple sampling methods and sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) method. The sampling characteristics of the methods and the expressions of the average sampling times are analyzed and compared. The results show that the SPRT method has similar sampling characteristics to the single sampling method under the same requirements of bilateral testability indexes and risks, and the SPRT method has the smaller average sampling times. It is recommended to use single sampling method and SPRT method in testability verification test. Considering that these four classical methods do not use prior information, the sample size of the testability verification test is often large. Under consideration of the testability prior information, the Bayesian theory is used to improve the SPRT method to obtain the Sequential Posterior Odds Test (SPOT) method. The sampling characteristics and average sampling times of the single sampling method, SPRT method and SPOT method are compared and analyzed under the same constraint parameters in the test. The results indicate that the average sampling times of SPOT method is less than single sampling method and SPRT method with the premise of approximate sampling characteristics. It is recommended to scientifically use priori information reasonably to reduce the sample size.
