Abstract:A new protocol for the synthetically useful deprotection of 1,3-dithiolane and 1,3-oxathiolane protected moieties has been developed. A series of 2,2-disubstituted 1,3 – dithiolanes and 1,3 – oxathiolanes was effectively deprotected to release the corresponding carbonyl compounds. The combination of trans-5-hydroperoxy-3,5-dimethyl-1,2-dioxolan-3-yl-ethaneperoxate and KOH was shown to be an effective system for the oxidative cleavage of C–S bonds under mild reaction conditions at room temperature. The active oxidizing specie is singlet molecular oxygen. It is generated via fragmentation of the trans-5-hydroperoxy-3,5-dimethyl-1,2 – dioxolane-3-yl ethaneperoxate with the help of KOH.

Odorless and Efficient Thioacetalization Reaction of Oximes

Abstract:Thioacetals are important compounds because they can be considered as both useful protecting groups of carbonyl compounds in the synthesis of multi-functional complex molecules and acyl carbanion equivalents in C-C bond forming reactions. Since many reactions have been developed to prepare oximes from non carbonyl compounds, to lead to a novel and efficient method for thioacetal preparation, transthioacetalization of oximes has received more and more attention. Unfortunately, the transformation usually suffers from the use of harmful, odorous thiols which can lead to serious safety and environment problems. From the green chemistry point of view, an efficient and odorless transthioacetalization of oximes involving an environment friendly reagent is of great importance and necessity. In this work, using odorless and stable alpha-oxo ketene dithioacetals 1 as thiol equivalents, the thioacetalization reaction of oximes 2 were studied. In the reaction system of MeCOCl-EtOH (95%) or 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA)-H2O, the thioacetalization reaction were carried out in reflux temperature. It is noteworthy that the odor of thiols can not be perceived during either the reaction or workup.

Abstract:An efficient method for the oxidative transformation of thioamides and thioketones to their oxygen analogues with singlet oxygen is reported. Singlet oxygen was produced in situ from the fragmentation of the trans-5-hydroperoxy-3,5-dimethyl-1,2-dioxolane-3-yl ethaneperoxate in the presence of KOH, and it has been explored as an effective oxidant for oxidative desulfurization of thioamides and thioketones. This protocol provides amides and ketones in excellent yields (80–90%) at room temperature under mild conditions. The thioamides reacted very well with this reagent system. The conjugation of neighboring NH and C=S groups appears to enhance yields for thioamides. Further investigation showed that this reagent system is also an efficient system for deprotection of thionoesters to esters.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide is a key C1 feedstock for the industrial production of hydrocarbons, where it is used to make millions of tonnes of chemicals, fuels, and solvents per annum. Many transition metal complexes can coordinate CO, but the formation of new C−C bonds in well-defined compounds from the scission and subsequent coupling of two or more CO moieties at a transition metal centre remains a challenge. Herein, we report the use of low-coordinate iron(II) complexes for the selective scission and homologation of CO affording unusual squaraines and iron carboxylates at ambient temperature and pressure. A modification of the ligand framework allows for the isolation and structural characterisation of a proposed metallacyclic Fe(II) carbene intermediate. These results indicate that, with the appropriate choice of supporting ligands, it is possible to cleave and homologate carbon monoxide under mild conditions using an abundant and environmentally benign low-coordinate, first row transition metal.

Abstract:A number of 1,3-oxathiolanes and 1,3-dithiolanes were subjected to reduction in ether solution by lithium aluminum hydride in the presence of either aluminum chloride or boron trifluoride. Both of these Lewis acids not only isomerized 1,3-oxathiolanes but also catalyzed their hydrogenolysis to the hydroxy thioethers. Under the same conditions neither aluminum chloride nor boron trifluoride had any effect upon 1,3-dithiolanes. However, in methylene chloride solution, 1,3-dithiolanes are isomerized by both Lewis acids although their hydrogenolysis was not achieved, probably due to the insolubility of the hydride in methylene chloride.A mechanistic interpretation is discussed to explain the results obtained.

Abstract:Using -oxo-ketene dithioacetals 1a as odorless thiol equivlents, an efficient and odorless transthioacetalization of acetals 2 has been developed. In the presence of MeCOCl in MeOH, the cleavage of 1a commences to generate thiols at both room and reflux temperatures, and the generated thiols then react with acetals 2 to give correspecting thioacetals 3 in good yield. This transthioacetalization is characterized by mild reaction conditions, simple procedure, good yields, and perfect chemoselectivity. It is noteworthy that only a very faint odor of thiols can be perceived during both the reaction and workup.

Abstract:Systematic oxidations of sulfides with sodium chlorite have been investigated in aprotic solvents under mild and neutral conditions, Metal catalysis is essential for the efficient oxidation,and conversion of a wide variety of diaryl, alkyl aryl, dialkyl and cyclic sulfides into the corresponding sulfoxides can be favoured by the catalytic presence of manganese(III) acetylacetonate in acetone with the aid of moist alumina in general or dry alumina in particular cases in a rapid, high-yielding manner. This simple procedure has also been found to be an easy method for chemoselective transformation of functionalised sulfides without extensive undesirable side-reactions.

Abstract:The isolation of thermally unstable and highly reactive organoiron(IV) complexes is a challenge for synthetic chemists. In particular, the number of examples where the C-based ligand is not part of the chelating ligand remains scarce. These compounds are of interest because they could pave the way to designing catalytic cycles of bond forming reactions proceeding via organoiron(IV) intermediates. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, of a family of alkynylferrates(III) and Fe(IV) alkynylide complexes. The alkynylferrates(III) are formed by transmetalation of the Fe(III) precursor [(N3N')FeIII] (N3N' is tris(N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-2-amidoethyl)amine)) with lithium alkynylides, and their further one-electron oxidation enables the synthesis of the corresponding Fe(IV) alkynylides. The electronic structure of this family of organometallic Fe(III) and Fe(IV) complexes has been thoroughly investigated by spectroscopic methods (EPR, NMR, 57Fe Mössbauer, X-Ray absorption (XAS) and emission (XES) spectroscopies) and theoretical calculations. While alkynylferrates(III) are sluggish to engage into C–C bond forming processes, the Fe(IV) alkynylides react to afford 1,3-diynes at room temperature. A bimolecular reductive elimination from a bimetallic iron(IV) intermediate to form the 1,3-diynes is proposed based on the mechanistic investigations performed.

Abstract:It has recently been shown that the nonheme oxoiron(IV) species supported by the 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane ligand (TMC) can be generated in near-quantitative yield by reacting [Fe(II)(TMC)(OTf)(2)] with a stoichiometric amount of H(2)O(2) in CH(3)CN in the presence of 2,6-lutidine (Li, F.; England, J.; Que, L., Jr. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 2134-2135). This finding has major implications for O-O bond cleavage events in both Fenton chemistry and nonheme iron enzymes. To understand the mechanism of this process, especially the intimate details of the O-O bond cleavage step, a series of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and analyses have been carried out. Two distinct reaction paths (A and B) were identified. Path A consists of two principal steps: (1) coordination of H(2)O(2) to Fe(II) and (2) a combination of partial homolytic O-O bond cleavage and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). The latter combination renders the rate-limiting O-O cleavage effectively a heterolytic process. Path B proceeds via a simultaneous homolytic O-O bond cleavage of H(2)O(2) and Fe-O bond formation. This is followed by H abstraction from the resultant Fe(III)-OH species by an •OH radical. Calculations suggest that path B is plausible in the absence of base. However, once 2,6-lutidine is added to the reacting system, the reaction barrier is lowered and more importantly the mechanistic path switches to path A, where 2,6-lutidine plays an essential role as an acid-base catalyst in a manner similar to how the distal histidine or glutamate residue assists in compound I formation in heme peroxidases. The reaction was found to proceed predominantly on the quintet spin state surface, and a transition to the triplet state, the experimentally known ground state for the TMC-oxoiron(IV) species, occurs in the last stage of the oxoiron(IV) formation process.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, there have been major developments in the transition iron-catalyzed selective oxidation of alkenes to epoxides; a common structure found in drug, isolated natural products, and fine chemicals. Many of these approaches have enabled highly efficient and selective epoxidation of alkenes via the design of specialized ligands, which facilitates to control the activity and selectivity of the reactions catalyzed by iron atom. Herein, we report the development of the olefin epoxidation with inorganic-ligand supported iron-catalysts using 30% H2O2 as an oxidant, and the mechanism is similar to iron-porphyrin type. With the catalyst 1, (NH4)(3)[FeMo6O18(OH)(6)], various aromatic and aliphatic alkenes were successfully transformed into the corresponding epoxides with excellent yields as well as chemo- and stereo-selectivity. This catalytic system possesses the advantages of being able to avoid the use of expensive, toxic, air/moisture sensitive and commercially unavailable organic ligands. The generality of this methodology is simple to operate and exhibits high catalytic activity as well as excellent stability, which gives it the potential to be used on an industrial scale, and maybe opens a way for the catalytic oxidation reaction via inorganic-ligand coordinated iron catalysis.

Abstract:Iodine is a well-known oxidant that is widely used in organic syntheses. Thiol oxidation by stoichiometric iodine is one of the most commonly employed strategies for the synthesis of valuable disulfides. While recent advancements in catalytic aerobic oxidation conditions have eliminated the need for stoichiometric oxidants, concerns persist regarding the use of toxic or expensive catalysts. In this study, we discovered that iodine can be used as a cheap, low-toxicity catalyst in the aerobic oxidation of thiols. In the catalytic cycle, iodine can be regenerated via HI oxidation by O2 at 70 °C in EtOAc. This protocol harnesses sustainable oxygen as the terminal oxidant, enabling the conversion of primary and secondary thiols with remarkable efficiency. Notably, all 26 tested thiols, encompassing various sensitive functional groups, were successfully converted into their corresponding disulfides with yields ranging from >66% to 98% at a catalyst loading of 5 mol%.

Abstract:Virtually all organosulfur compounds react with Fe(0) carbonyls to give the title complexes. These reactions are reviewed in light of major advances over the past few decades, spurred by interest in Fe-2(mu-SR)(2)(CO)(x) centers at the active sites of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase enzymes. The most useful synthetic route to Fe-2(mu-SR)(2)(CO)(6) involves the reaction of thiols with Fe-2(CO)(9) and Fe-3(CO)(12). Such reactions can proceed via mono-, di-, and triiron intermediates. The reactivity of Fe(0) carbonyls toward thiols is highly chemoselective, and the resulting dithiolato complexes are fairly rugged. Thus, many complexes tolerate further synthetic elaboration directed at the organic substituents. A second major route involves alkylation of Fe-2(mu-S-2)(CO)(6), Fe-2(mu-SH)(2)(CO)(6), and Li2Fe2(mu-S)(2)(CO)(6). This approach is especially useful for azadithiolates Fe-2[(mu-SCH2)(2)NR](CO)(6). Elaborate complexes arise via addition of the FeSH group to electrophilic alkenes, allcynes, and carbonyls. Although the first example of Fe-2(mu-SR)(2)(CO)(6) was prepared from ferrous reagents, ferrous compounds are infrequently used, although the Fe(II)(SR)(2) + Fe(0) condensation reaction is promising. Almost invariably low-yielding, the reaction of Fe-3(CO)(12), S-8, and a variety of unsaturated substrates results in C-H activation, affording otherwise inaccessible derivatives. Thiones and related C=S containing reagents are highly reactive toward Fe(0), often giving complexes derived from substituted methanedithiolates and C-H activation.

Abstract:Traditional methods for the synthesis of heterocyclic ethers often require the use of expensive and/or toxic reagents and catalysts. This new protocol addresses these limitations by using inexpensive Iron(III) perchlorate and TBHP as an external oxidant to catalyze the radical cross‐coupling of heteroarenes and cyclic ethers.The protocol eliminates the need for costly metals and avoids photo‐redox processes, making it a more sustainable approach to the synthesis of heterocyclic ethers. A cost effective protocol has been developed for the synthesis of diverse heterocyclic ethers through the radical cross‐coupling of heteroarenes and cyclic ethers. This reaction is catalyzed by inexpensive iron(III) perchlorate and employs TBHP (tert‐butyl hydroperoxide) as an external oxidant. The protocol demonstrates remarkable versatility in substrate compatibility and can accommodate various functional groups, all under mild reaction conditions. Importantly, this method eliminates the need for costly metals and avoids photo‐redox processes, making it a promising strategy for efficient and sustainable chemical synthesis.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalyzed oxidation reactions are central components of organic chemistry. On behalf of green and sustainable chemistry, molecular oxygen (O-2) has been considered as an ideal oxidant due to its natural, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly characters, and therefore offers attractive academic and industrial prospects. In recent years, some powerful organic oxidation methods have been continuously developed. Among them, the use of molecular oxygen (O-2) as a green and sustainable oxidant has attracted considerable attentions. However, the development of new transition metal-catalyzed protocols using O-2 as an ideal oxidant is highly desirable but very challenging because of the low standard electrode potential of O-2 to reoxidize the transition-metal catalysts. In this Account, we highlight some of our progress toward the use of transition-metal catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions. Through the careful selection of ligand and the acidic additives, we have successfully realized the reoxidation of Cu, Pd, Mn, Fe, Ru, Rh, and bimetallic catalysts under O-2 or air atmosphere (1 atm) for the oxidative coupling, oxygenation reactions, oxidative C-H/C-C bond cleavage, oxidative annulation, and olefins difunctionalization reactions. Most of the reactions can tolerate a range of functional groups. These methods provide new strategies for the green synthesis of alkynes, (-keto)amides/esters, ketones/diones, O/N-heterocycles, -azido alcohols, and nitriles. The high efficiency, low cost, and simple operation under air make these methodologies very attractive and practical. We will also discuss the mechanisms of these reactions which might be useful to promote the new type of aerobic oxidative reaction design.
