Abstract:We study a family of one-dimensional quasi-periodically forced maps [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is real, [Formula: see text] is an angle, and [Formula: see text] is an irrational frequency, such that [Formula: see text] is a real piecewise-linear map with respect to [Formula: see text] of certain kind. The family depends on two real parameters, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. For this family, we prove the existence of nonsmooth pitchfork bifurcations. For [Formula: see text] and any [Formula: see text] there is only one continuous invariant curve. For [Formula: see text] there exists a smooth map [Formula: see text] such that: (a) For [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] has two continuous attracting invariant curves and one continuous repelling curve; (b) For [Formula: see text] it has one continuous repelling invariant curve and two semi-continuous (noncontinuous) attracting invariant curves that intersect the unstable one in a zero-Lebesgue measure set of angles; (c) For [Formula: see text] it has one continuous attracting invariant curve. The case [Formula: see text] is a degenerate case that is also discussed in the paper. It is interesting to note that this family is a simplified version of the smooth family [Formula: see text] for which there is numerical evidence of a nonsmooth pitchfork bifurcation. Finally, we also discuss the limit case when [Formula: see text].

Bifurcations of mode-locked periodic orbits in three-dimensional maps

Abstract:In this paper, we report the bifurcations of mode-locked periodic orbits occurring in maps of three or higher dimensions. The `torus' is represented by a closed loop in discrete time, which contains stable and unstable cycles of the same periodicity, and the unstable manifolds of the saddle. We investigate two types of `doubling' of such loops: in (a) two disjoint loops are created and the iterates toggle between them, and in (b) the length of the closed invariant curve is doubled. Our work supports the conjecture of Gardini and Sushko, which says that the type of bifurcation depends on the sign of the third eigenvalue. We also report the situation arising out of Neimark-Sacker bifurcation of the stable and saddle cycles, which creates cyclic closed invariant curves. We show interesting types of saddle-node connection structures, which emerge for parameter values where the stable fixed point has bifurcated but the saddle has not, and vice versa.

Abstract:In this paper, using some techniques, we prove that there exists the regular homoclinic point for Taylor mapping with 4<A≤1. 5π and motion of bouncing ball with 4<r≤1.5π. This result implies that the corresponding systems have infinitely many distinct periodic points.

Under different parametric conditions, various sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of the above solutions are given.

Abstract:This paper devotes to a detailed bifurcation analysis of a two-dimensional non-invertible map, obtained using a symmetric coupling between one-dimensional logistic maps. The critical normal form coefficients method is employed to detect bifurcations and to explore further critical conditions without explicit reduction to the center manifold. The results show that the two-dimensional map undergoes codimension-one (codim-1) bifurcations such as transcritical, pitchfork, period-doubling, Neimark-Sacker, and codim-2 bifurcations including transcritical-flip, pitchfork-flip, strong resonances 1:2, 1:3, 1:4. For each bifurcation, the critical normal form coefficients are calculated to check the non-degeneracy conditions and predict the bifurcation scenarios around the bifurcation points. To validate the theoretical results, all bifurcation curves of fixed points are plotted with the aid of the numerical continuation method. Weak resonances are also specified by the isoclines on the bi-parameter plane. The results will help in understanding the occurrence and the structure of bifurcation cascades observed in many coupled discrete systems.

Abstract:Mode-locking regions (resonance tongues) formed by border-collision bifurcations of piecewise-smooth, continuous maps commonly exhibit a distinctive sausage-like geometry with pinch points called "shrinking points". In this paper we extend our unfolding of the piecewise-linear case [{\em Nonlinearity}, 22(5):1123-1144, 2009] to show how shrinking points are destroyed by nonlinearity. We obtain a codimension-three unfolding of this shrinking point bifurcation for $N$-dimensional maps. We show that the destruction of the shrinking points generically occurs by the creation of a curve of saddle-node bifurcations that smooth one boundary of the sausage, leaving a kink in the other boundary.

Abstract:We investigate a generalized Hopf bifurcation emerged from a corner located at the origin which is the intersection of n discontinuity boundaries in planar piecewise smooth dynamical systems with the Jacobian matrix of each smooth subsystem having either two different nonzero real eigenvalues or a pair of complex conjugate eigenvalues. We obtain a novel result that the generalized Hopf bifurcation can occur even when the Jacobian matrix of each smooth subsystem has two different nonzero real eigenvalues. According to the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrices and the number of smooth subsystems, we provide a general method and prove some generalized Hopf bifurcation theorems by studying the associated Poincaré map.

Abstract:For a family of discontinuous 3-dim homogeneous piecewise linear dynamical systems with two zones, we investigate the number of invariant cones and the existence of periodic orbits as a spatial relationship between the invariant manifolds of the subsystem changes. By studying the number of real roots of a quadratic equation induced by slopes of half straight lines starting from the origin in required domain, we obtain complete results on the number and stability of invariant cones. Especially, we prove that the maximum number of invariant cones is two, and obtain complete parameter regions on which there exist one or two invariant cones, on which one or two fake cones (corresponding to real roots of the quadratic equation that are not in the required domain) appear and on which an invariant cone will be foliated by periodic orbits.

Abstract:We consider the rich dynamics and bifurcations exhibited by a three-dimensional quadratic map. Torus doubling bifurcations are central to bifurcation theory. Such bifurcations can only occur in a higher dimensional map of dimensions greater than or equal to three. After subsequent doublings, formation of Shilnikov attractors and hyperchaotic attractors are usually observed. It is shown that the map under consideration shows both resonant and ergodic torus doubling bifurcation. We show that the system exhibits resonant torus doubling bifurcation in which the doubled mode-locked periodic orbits lies on a Möbius strip. Additionally, we also illustrate the doubling of ergodic tori and analyze the bifurcation via the use of the second Poincaré section and the method of Lyapunov bundles. The analysis involves the techniques of construction of one-dimensional manifolds, a one-parameter continuation of saddle periodic orbits, and multi-dimensional Newton–Raphson method to locate the saddle periodic orbits.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a class of continuous maps characterized by a singularity of order $x^{q/p}$ (with $p,q \in \mathbb{N}$, $p>q$, and $(p,q)=1$) on one side of the discontinuity boundary $\Sigma$ and a linear behaviour on the other side. Such maps arise naturally in the study of grazing bifurcations of hybrid and piecewise flows. In this context the boundary collision of a fixed point of the map with $\Sigma$ then corresponds to a grazing bifurcation of the flow. We will start by studying one-dimensional maps, and the main result of this paper is a classification of all bifurcation scenarios, including: period doubling and robust chaos.

Abstract:We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space M-2 of quadratic rational maps, f : P-1 -> P-1. We focus on the family of curves, Per(1)(lambda) subset of M-2 for lambda is an element of C, defined by the condition that each f is an element of Per(1)(lambda) has a fixed point of multiplier lambda. We prove that the curve Per(1)(lambda) contains infinitely many postcritically finite maps if and only if lambda = 0, addressing a special case of Baker and DeMarco ('Special curves and postcritically finite polynomials', Forum of Math. Pi 1 (2013), doi: 10.1017/fmp.2013.2; Conjecture 1.4). We also show that the two critical points of f define distinct bifurcation measures along Per(1)(lambda).

Under some mild assumptions we prove the existence of a unique invariant mixing absolutely continuous probability measures, study its rate of decay of correlation and prove a number of limit theorems.

Abstract:We study two-dimensional, two-piece, piecewise-linear maps having two saddle fixed points. Such maps reduce to a four-parameter family and are well known to have a chaotic attractor throughout open regions of parameter space. The purpose of this paper is to determine where and how this attractor undergoes bifurcations. We explore the bifurcation structure numerically by using Eckstein's greatest common divisor algorithm to estimate from sample orbits the number of connected components in the attractor. Where the map is orientation-preserving the numerical results agree with formal results obtained previously through renormalisation. Where the map is orientation-reversing or non-invertible the same renormalisation scheme appears to generate the bifurcation boundaries, but here we need to account for the possibility of some stable low-period solutions. Also the attractor can be destroyed in novel heteroclinic bifurcations (boundary crises) that do not correspond to simple algebraic constraints on the parameters. Overall the results reveal a broadly similar component-doubling bifurcation structure in the orientation-reversing and non-invertible settings, but with some additional complexities.

Existence and Stability of Periodic Orbits in $N$-Dimensional Piecewise Linear Continuous Maps

Abstract:Piecewise smooth maps are known to exhibit a wide range of dynamical features including numerous types of periodic orbits. Predicting regions in parameter space where such periodic orbits might occur and determining their stability is crucial to characterize the dynamics of the system. However, obtaining the conditions of existence and stability of these periodic orbits generally use brute force methods which require successive application of the iterative map on a starting point. In this article, we propose a faster and more elegant way of obtaining those conditions without iterating the complete map. The method revolves around direct computation of higher powers of matrices without computing the lower ones and is applicable on any dimension of the phase space. In the later part of the article, we compare the speed of the proposed method with the other popular algorithms which shows the effectiveness of the proposed method in higher dimensions. We also illustrate the use of this method in computing the regions of existence and stability of a particular class of periodic orbits in three dimensions.

Abstract:Much progress has been made in planar piecewise smooth dynamical systems. However there remain many important problems to be solved even in planar piecewise linear systems. In this paper, we investigate the number of limit cycles of planar piecewise linear systems with two linear regions sharing the same equilibrium. By studying the implicit Poincare map induced by the discontinuity boundary, some cases when there exist at most 2 limit cycles is completely investigated. Especially, based on these results we provide an example along with numerical simulations to illustrate the existence of 3 limit cycles thus have a negative answer to the conjecture by M. Han and W. Zhang [11](J. Differ.Equations 248 (2010) 2399-2416) that piecewise linear systems with only two regions have at most 2 limit cycles.

Abstract:In this paper, the stability and bifurcations of a new discrete chaotic map based on gene regulatory network are studied. Firstly, the existence and stability conditions of the fixed points are given. Secondly, the conditions for existence of three cases of codimension-one bifurcations (fold bifurcation, flip bifurcation and Neimark–Sacker bifurcation) are derived by using the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory. Then, the conditions for the occurrence of codimension-two bifurcation (fold–flip bifurcation, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 strong resonance) are investigated by using several variable substitutions and introduction of new parameters. Meanwhile, these bifurcation curves are returned to the original variables and parameters to express for easy verification. The corresponding numerical simulations and numerical continuation results not only show the validity of the proposed results, but also exhibit the interesting and complex dynamical behaviors. Finally, some initial conditions and two-parameter spaces analysis are given numerically. The local attraction basins and two-parameter space plots display interesting dynamical behaviors of the discrete system operating with different integral step size and other parameters changing.

Abstract:This research considers discontinuous dynamical systems, which have related vector fields that shift over a discontinuity surface. These systems appear in a variety of applications, including ecology, medicine, neuroscience, and nonsmooth mechanics. The purpose of this paper is to develop a perturbation technique that measures the effect of a nonsmooth perturbation on the period doubling bifurcation of an unperturbed system. The unperturbed system is assumed to be close to a period doubling orbit, such that when the bifurcation parameter varies, the response changes from a period one to a period two limit cycle. The generalized determination of the Poincaré map associated with perturbed systems subjected to nonsmooth transitions is derived. The main techniques used in the proof of the results are normal forms and Melnikov functions, which are defined in two zones. Various examples are presented to show that non-smoothness is responsible for period doubling. To illustrate the interesting period doubling phenomenon that emerges from an existing flat periodic orbit via the non-smooth perturbation, a simple and novel discontinuous system is provided. An additional example is provided to show the emergence of a perturbed period doubling orbit near an unperturbed one.
