Abstract:A protocol for the Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with methylene compounds catalyzed by task specifed ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-en-8-ium lactate under solvent-free conditions has been developed. The reactions proceed at ambient temperature and the work-up procedures are very simple. Good to excellent yields could be obtained. The ionic liuid could be simply prepared and recycled efficiently.

Abstract:Benzyl bromides and related molecules are among the most common substrates in organic synthesis. They are typically used as electrophiles in nucleophilic substitution reactions. These molecules can also be activated via single-electron-transfer (SET) process for radical reactions. Representative recent progress includes α-carbon benzylation of ketones and aldehydes via photoredox catalysis. Here we disclose the generation of (nitro)benzyl radicals via N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis under reductive conditions. The radical intermediates generated via NHC catalysis undergo formal 1,2-addition with ketones to eventually afford tertiary alcohol products. The overall process constitutes a formal polarity-inversion of benzyl bromide, allowing a direct coupling of two initially electrophilic carbons. Our study provides a new carbene-catalysed reaction mode that should enable unconventional transformation of (nitro)benzyl bromides under mild organocatalytic conditions.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary The asymmetric reductive arylation and alkenylation of benzylic chloride under photoredox/nickel dual catalysis using chiral biimidazoline (BiIm) ligand is reported to access 1,1-diaryl alkanes and aryl allylic compounds with good yield as well as stereo- and enantioselectivities. This protocol uses more commercially available and less expensive C(sp(2))-Br as the electrophile coupling partner. A primary result using alkenyl chloride and alkyl chloride is also reported. Various functional groups are tolerated and the applications of this method are investigated by late-stage functionalization and gram-scale reaction.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling has emerged as a reliable method for constructing carbon–carbon bonds. Herein, we report a general method, cobalt-catalyzed reductive alkynylation, to construct C(sp)-C(sp3) and C(sp)-C(sp2) bonds. This presented reaction has a broad substrate scope, enabling the efficient cross-electrophile coupling between alkynyl bromides with alkyl halides and aryl or alkenyl (pseudo)halides. This presented reaction is conducted under mild conditions, tolerating many functional groups, thus suitable for the modification and synthesis of biologically active molecules.

Abstract:The effective transition metal-free photoredox/bismuth dual catalytic reductive dialkylation of nitroarenes with benzaldehydes has been reported. The nitroarene reduction through visible light-driven photoredox catalysis was integrated with subsequent reductive dialkylation of anilines under bismuth catalysis to enable the cascade reductive alkylation of nitroarenes with carbonyls. Salient features of this relay catalysis system include mild reaction conditions, no requirement for transition metal catalysts, easy handling, step-economy, and high selectivity.

Abstract:Abstract An efficient cobalt‐catalyzed redox‐neutral sulfonylative coupling to afford (hetero)aryl alkyl sulfones from boronic acids, ammonium salts and potassium metabisulfite has been realized. Commercially available and air‐stable CoCl 2 , in combination with phenanthroline ligand, is sufficient to achieve rapid and high‐yielding conversion of the reactants into the corresponding sulfones. This practical transformation proceeds smoothly through C−N bond cleavage under redox‐neutral catalytic conditions and shows broad functional‐group tolerance. Other carbon based electrophiles, including diaryliodonium salts, heteroaryl halides, and carbonates were compatible. Further transformation of aryl alkyl sulfones then allows conversion into olefins, alkenyl sulfones and halogenated sulfones, respectively, in a one‐pot process.

Abstract:We present a versatile nickel-electrocatalytic deaminative cross-coupling platform for the efficient construction of C(sp3)-C(sp3) and C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds from readily available alkyl bistriflimides. This methodology involves the assembly of two leaving groups on alkyl amines to form alkyl bistriflimides, followed by their effective coupling with a wide range of alkyl halides, alkyl pseudohalides, aryl halides, and alkenyl halides under electrochemical reductive conditions. Moreover, the successful application of electrochemical reductive relay cross-coupling and transition metal-free cross-electrophile coupling further demonstrates the versatility of alkyl bistriflimides as valuable building blocks in organic synthesis. Combined control experiments and density functional theory calculations provide insights into the reaction pathway and the crucial role of iodide in the catalytic process.

Abstract:An operationally convenient Zn-catalyzed synthesis of alcohols by the reduction of aldehydes, ketones, and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes/ketones is reported. It is a rare example of using mild and sustainable HBpin as a reductant for catalytic reduction of carbonyl compounds in the absence of acid or base as hydrolysis reagent. The reaction is upscalable and proceeds in high selectivity without the formation of boronate ester by-products, and tolerates sensitive functionalities, such as iodo, bromo, chloro, fluoro, nitro, trifluoromethyl, aminomethyl, alkynyl, and amide. The Zn(OAc)2/HBpin combination has been also proved to be chemoselective for the C=N reduction of imine analogs.

Abstract:Unimolecular reduction and bimolecular reductive coupling of carbon monoxide (CO) represent important ways to synthesize organic feedstocks. Reductive activation of CO through open-shell pathways, though rare, can help overcome the barriers of many traditional organometallic elementary reactions that are hard to achieve. Herein we successfully achieve the unimolecular reduction of CO to (TPP)RhCH2OSiR1R2R3 (TPP = 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin), and the release of products CH3OSiR1R2R3, TEMPO-CH2OSiR1R2R3 and BrCH2OSiR1R2R3 in near-quantitative yield under visible light (420-780 nm), which involves radical formation from Rh-C bond homolysis. Bimolecular CO reductive coupling products, (TPP)RhCOCH2OSiR1R2R3, are then obtained via a radical mechanism. Subsequent treatment with n-propylamine, BrCCl3 or TEMPO under thermal or photochemical conditions afford small-molecule bimolecular reductive coupling products. To the best of our knowledge, homogeneous systems which reductively couple CO under photochemical conditions have not been reported before. Here, the use of an open-shell transition metal complex, that delivers more than one kind of small-molecule CO reductive coupling products bearing different functional groups, provides opportunities for useful CO reductive transformations.
Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Catalyzed by Binuclear LRe2(CO)6Cl2 and LMn2(CO)6Br2 Complexes with an Internal Proton Source

Abstract:The synthesis of certain commodity chemicals, e.g., methanol and acetic acid, relies on CO, which is currently mainly produced by the combustion of carbon or natural gas. Photo- or electrochemical conversion of atmospheric CO2 to CO represents an attractive alternative strategy as this approach is carbon-neutral. Such photo- or electrochemically formed CO can also be used in the Fischer-Tropsch process forming liquid hydrocarbons for energy storage applications. The multiple electroreduction of CO2 is preferably coupled with proton transfer steps as this requires less energy than the single outer-sphere 1e- reduction of CO2.In 1984 and 2011, it was shown that [(Lbpy)Re(CO)3Cl] (1) and [(Lbpy)Mn(CO)3Br] (2), respectively, mediate the electrochemical 2e-/2H+ reduction of CO2 forming CO and water (Lbpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Since proton management is crucial for catalysis, recently the impact of internal proton sources close to the axial position in such complexes has been investigated. However, binuclear complexes have been used rarely as mediators although it has been shown very early for 1 that electron management is also important: the 2e-/2H+ reduction pathway with 1 exhibits a higher reaction rate than going via the singly reduced species, though the pathway requires a higher overpotential. In this Account, we focus on recent developments of binuclear LMn2(CO)6 and LRe2(CO)6 mediators with an internal phenol group in the electroreduction of CO2. In contrast to mononuclear derivatives, for which the impact of the internal proton source on catalysis is very diverse, we always observed a higher reaction rate and for the Mn complexes also a lower overpotential with the binuclear complexes compared to the mononuclear variants. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational studies on the mono- and binuclear complexes shed light on their reactivity under reductive conditions, elucidated the structure of reduced species, unraveled the kinetics for catalytically productive and unproductive (side) reactions, and allowed us to derive some hypothesis on the CO2 reduction mechanism. Finally, I emphasize that the electrohydrogenation of the polar double bonds by the binuclear complex LMn2(CO)6 with a central phenol unit is not restricted to CO2 but is also applicable to organic compounds with C═O bonds.

Abstract:On the basis of the chiral ion pair between catalytic anionic stereogenic-at-cobalt(III) complexes and halonium ion intermediates, an asymmetric halogenation/semipinacol rearrangement reaction has been established using N-bromosuccinimide as the halogen source. This protocol provides an alternative approach for accessing a diverse set of chiral β-bromocycloketones in good yields with high enantioselectivities (≤96% yield, 95.5:4.5 er).

Abstract:Benzothiazolines, with their versatile nature, serve as fundamental building blocks for the synthesis of significant biological compounds. However, methods for the preparation of benzothiazolines from readily available starting materials are limited. An efficient synthesis of benzothiazoline via photoredox-catalyzed dearomatization of benzothiazole derivatives has been achieved at room temperature. This catalysis proceeds via a ligand to metal charge transfer process, and FeCl3 plays a dual role as an indirect HAT reagent and reducing agent. This methodology can be conveniently scaled up, and most of the alkylated products can be purified without chromatography. In addition, this process exhibited the advantages of low cost, high reaction efficiency, and mild conditions.
Nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of unactivated alkyl halides using bis(pinacolato)diboron as reductant

Abstract:The use of bis(pinacolato)diboron as the terminal reductant allows the efficient Ni-catalyzed coupling of unactivated secondary and primary alkyl halides, generating the C(sp3)–C(sp3) coupling products in good yields. The mild catalytic conditions display excellent functional group tolerance, and good chemoselectivities which require only 1.5 equiv. of primary bromides for the coupling with secondary bromides. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that an in situ organoborane/Suzuki process is not likely. It was identified that the base and ligand have more profound impact on selecting this reductive coupling pathway. The good chemoselectivity appears to be evoked by the formation of Ni–Bpin catalytic intermediates, which demands matched sizes and reactivities of the alkyl halide coupling partners for optimal coupling efficiency.
