Abstract:The charge transfer phenomena within a tetrathiafulvalene-derived fluorescent switch, 2-[4-(2,2'-bi-1,3-dithiol-4-yl)-5-methoxy-1,3-thiazol-2-yl]-2-pyridine (2-MT) is investigated via various spectral and theoretical approaches at both the ground state and the excited state. At different oxidation states of 2-MT, the charge transfer behaviors between the redox switch, tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), and the fluorophore, 5-methoxy-2-(2-pyridyl)thiazole (2-MPT), can be tuned differently. When a set of chemical inputs are introduced, the redox reactions coupled with coordination and protonation reactions trigger distinct charge-transfer processes within the ground state and the excited state, which are evidenced in both the absorption and fluorescent spectrum. The chemical-driven spectral changes thus provide parallel output channels to construct reconfigurable molecule-based binary algebra functionalities, that is, the half adder and the half subtractor. The charge-transfer induced fluorescence recovery of 2-MT is also sensitive to the input sequence, which implements a molecular keypad lock within the TTF derivative for the first time.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS] By combining the features of binaphthalene and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), compounds 1-4 Were designed for studies of chiral molecular switches. Absorption and CD spectral studies clearly indicate that the CID spectra resulting from axial chiral binaphthalene units call be modulated through the redox reactions of TTF units, which means new chiral molecular switches can be established on the basis of binaphthalene molecules with TTF units. The reference compound 5. which has one TTF unit rather than two as in the case of compounds 1, 3, and 4, failed to show such property, hinting that the presence of two or more TTF units is required for the realization of CD spectrum modulation. In addition, the manner of the CD spectrum modulation has been found to be dependent on the way TTF units are linked to the binaphthalene skeleton, in terms of the linker length, the positions for substitution, and the number of TTF units.

Abstract:The new redox-fluorescence dependent molecules MTs were synthesized with tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and 5-methoxy-2-pyridylthiazoles coupled directly and rigidly. The fluorescent emission of MTs can be reversibly switched on/off depending on the oxidation states of the TTF unit, due to the peculiar property of TTF being oxidized reversibly and selectively. The dicationic MTs display a strong emission in the visible region and can be quenched by various chemical inputs. Based on this switchable fluorescent property of MTs, several logic gates such as AND, OR, NOT, NOR, INHIBIT, XNOR and NAND were realized by purposely selecting the initial states and chemical inputs.

Abstract:In this article, we report a newly designed molecule, RhTPE, synthesized by fusing rhodamine with TPE, which realizes both emission color change and on/off switching. Compared to most of the reported fluorescent switches, such a unique structure endowed RhTPE with the multifunction of AIE, methanol-responsiveness, photochromism and mechanochromism, owing to the dynamic ring opening-closing isomerization. RhTPE is acid-sensitive and can recover to the ring-closed form (OF) by base treatment. Both RhTPE and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)-treated RhTPE display AIE properties. It is noteworthy that during the aggregation process of TFA-treated RhTPE, the cyan emission strengthens while the red emission disappears, due to the aggregation-induced ring-closing reaction. RhTPE shows selective responsiveness to methanol out of all the twelve screened solvents, probably owing to the low pK(a) value and high polarity of methanol. More interestingly, RhTPE demonstrates excitation wavelength-dependent photochromism in several different organic solvents, which is very rarely reported in rhodamine systems. In the solid state, RhTPE has three well-distinguished high contrast states of cyan, red and dark. The reversible switch between any two states can be achieved with acid/base or mechanical force/chemical vapor.

Abstract:Red fluorescent molecules suffer from large, non-radiative internal conversion rates (k(IC)) governed by the energy gap law. To design efficient red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), a large fluorescence rate (k(F)) as well as a small energy difference between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states (Delta E-ST) is necessary. Herein, we demonstrated that increasing the distance between donor (D) and acceptor (A) in intramolecular-charge-transfer molecules is a promising strategy for simultaneously achieving small Delta E-ST and large k(F). Four D-Ph-A-Ph-D-type molecules with an anthraquinone acceptor, phenyl (Ph) bridge, and various donors were designed, synthesized, and compared with corresponding D-A-D-type molecules. Yellow to red TADF was observed from all of them. The k(F) and Delta E-ST values determined from the measurements of quantum yield and lifetime of the fluorescence and TADF components are in good agreement with those predicted by corrected time-dependent density functional theory and are approximatively proportional to the square of the cosine of the theoretical twisting angles between each subunit. However, the introduction of a Ph-bridge was found to enhance k(F) without increasing Delta E-ST. Molecular simulation revealed a twisting and stretching motion of the NC bond in the D-A-type molecules, which is thought to lower Delta E-ST and k(F) but raise k(IC), that was experimentally confirmed in both solution and doped film. OLEDs containing D-Ph-A-Ph-D-type molecules with diphenylamine and bis(4-biphenyl)amine donors demonstrated maximum external quantum efficiencies of 12.5% and 9.0% with emission peaks at 624 and 637 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials have gained increasing attention for their fundamental investigation and intelligent applications. In this work, we report design and synthesis of a novel polyamic acid bearing oligoaniline, triphenylamine, and fluorene groups, which served as sensitive units and fluorescence emission unit, respectively. The resulting polymer exhibits multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescence switching behavior triggered by redox species, pH, electrochemical, and pressure stimuli. Every fluorescence switching mechanism upon each stimulus was studied in detail. The interactions and energy transfer between sensitive units and emission unit are largely responsible for this fascinating fluorescent switching behavior. This work provides a deep understanding of the optical switching essence upon these stimuli, opening the way for the development of new fluorescent sensing applications.

Abstract:New heterocyclic TTF compounds 1a-c and 2 with an azobenzene moiety were described. The oxidation potential of 1a could be reversibly modulated by alternating UV and visible light irradiation. As a result, a molecular switch with UV/visible light as the inputs and the electrochemical signal as the output was achieved. Moreover, it was found that the influence of the azobenzene photoisomerization on the electronic property of the TTF unit became stronger with shorter spacers in compounds 1a-c.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive supramolecular materials have attracted much attention because of their controllable microstructure and luminescence behavior. In this study, the fluorescent molecule ((1E)-1-((4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)benzylidene)hydrazineylide-ne)ethyl)ferrocene (FcMe-TPE) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and redox activity was synthesized. The morphology as well as fluorescence behavior could be modulated by changing solvent, adding oxidant or applying voltage, and the translation mechanism was explored in detail by means of density functional theory (DFT). Based on the presence of competitive hydrogen bonding, FcMe-TPE assemblies showed different aggregate behaviors and properties under different water contents (f w ). As f w increased from 20% to 60%, the morphology of assemblies could be transformed from 2D sheet to elliptical crystal structure, then the precipitation gradually disappeared for the further increase of f w . At the same time, the addition of oxidant as well as the application of voltage could also cause changes in the fluorescence intensity of the assemblies. When the voltage increased from 0 V to 3 V, the fluorescence intensity increased and reached the maximum value at 1 V. Based on this property, the electrofluorochromic (EFC) device with low trigger voltage was made. This work provides a feasible strategy for controllable self-assembly and the fabrication of multiple fluorescence switches, which has potential practical application in the field of advanced anti-counterfeiting, intelligent display and information encryption.

Abstract:Tetra(4-(diethylamino)phenyl)ethene (TPE-4N), a new derivative of tetraphenylethene (TPE), is facilely prepared in one step from bis(4-(diethylamino)phenyl)methanone in a good yield of 85%. TPE-4N shows aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with high solid-state fluorescence quantum yields up to 63.5%. It has strong proton capture capability, allowing for reversible fluorescence switching in acidic and basic solutions. A good linear relationship between the emission intensity and the pH value ranging from 4.4 to 6.0 is established. By exposing to hydrochloride vapor, the color of TPE-4N powder is changed from yellow-green to white, accompanied by a fluorescence color change from green to sky-blue. The resulting protonated luminogen (p-TPE-4N) can be readily reverted to TPE-4N by fuming with hot triethylamine vapor. The protonation and deprotonation processes are reversible and can be repeated many times without fatigue in the solid state. In addition, p-TPE-4N exhibits reversible thermochromism between 80-120 degrees C, and reverts to TPE-4N by heating up to 120 degrees C. Multiple stimuli-responsiveness and reversible fluorescence indicate that TPE-4N is a promising candidate for chemical sensing and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:In photoswitches that undergo fluorescence switching upon ultraviolet irradiation, photoluminescence and photoisomerization often occur simultaneously, leading to unstable fluorescence properties. Here, we successfully demonstrated reversible solid-state triple fluorescence switching through "Pump-Trigger" multiphoton manipulation. A novel fluorescence photoswitch, BOSA-SP, achieved green, yellow, and red fluorescence under excitation by pump light and isomerization induced by trigger light. The energy ranges of photoexcitation and photoisomerization did not overlap, enabling appropriate selection of the multiphoton light for "pump" and "trigger" photoswitching, respectively. Additionally, the large free volume of the spiropyran (SP) moiety in the solid state promoted reversible photoisomerization. Switching between "pump" and "trigger" light is useful for three-color tunable switching cell imaging, which can be exploited in programmable fluorescence switching. Furthermore, we exploited reversible dual-fluorescence switching in a single molecular system to successfully achieve two-color super-resolution imaging.

Abstract:An unprecedented O-fused ring 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methyl-2,2,3-triphenylbenzofuran-6(2H)-one (3) was first time synthesized. Further, a series of novel dialkyl/fluoroalkyl derivatives of compound 3, 5,7-dialkoxy/fluoroalkoxy-4-methyl-2,2,3-triphenylbenzofuran-6(2H)-one, were obtained with noninvasive fluorescence switching characteristics and aggregation-induced emission properties. Compared with fluoroalkyl derivatives, the alkyl analogs exhibited a significant bathochromic shift in solid-state fluorescence emission. Notably, these noninvasive fluorescent molecular switches could be facilely tuned through light and heat stimulation, which successfully achieved high contrast and reversible fluorescent emission between orange and yellow endowing them with potential applications in data encryption materials. In addition, the single crystal data of compounds 3 and 7-CF3 displayed weak intermolecular interactions in different directions, resulting in twisted conformation and antiparallel slip stacking. Interestingly, the polymer dimethyl silicone film doped with 7-C3F7 also showed an evident light-responsive behavior, meeting the criterion for fluorescent materials in the optical field.

Abstract:Gated photochromism is of interest for the operation and control of modern high-tech optofunctional materials. For further advancing this topic towards the achievement of multifunctional molecular switching, however, it remains a great challenge to incorporate multiple fluorescence regulation into gated photochromism in one unimolecular system. Herein, it is reported that a dithienylethene derivative DTEN with a Schiff base connection can be facilely synthesized by one-step coupling, and it enabled distinct color and spectral changes upon different stimuli, including ultraviolet, visible light, Ni2+, and Al3+. Relying on hydrazine and hydroxy units in this molecule, compound DTEN exhibited novel Ni2+-locked photochromic characteristics originating from complexation of the compound with Ni2+ in a 2:1 stoichiometry. On the other hand, a 1:1 complexation between compound DTEN and Al3+ could allow both of the initial and photostationary states of DTEN to display fluorescent enhancement and a redshift, realizing a dual-fluorescence "turn-on" sensing of Al3+ by light. On this basis, it is argued that the switching of the coordination mode between DTEN and Ni2+ or Al3+ brings up the possibility of tunable photoswitching by multiple stimuli, which offers a novel way for future development of multifunctional switching materials with different input and output signals, as exemplified by the construction of a delicate molecular circuit.

Abstract:A novel diarylethene with a triazole-linked rhodamine B unit has been synthesized by click chemistry. When triggered by light, proton, and metal ions, the diarylethene can be used as a fluorescence switch, leading to a multiaddressable system. The diarylethene shows sequence-dependent responses through efficient interaction of the specific triazole-linked rhodamine B unit with proton and metal ions. Furthermore, the diarylethene can serve as a naked-eye chemosensor for highly selective recognition of different metal ions in different solvent systems. The diarylethene was highly selective toward Al3+ with remarkable fluorescence change from dark to yellow in acetonitrile, while it selectively recognized Cu2+ with significant fluorescence change from dark to bright yellow in the mixture of acetonitrile and water (v/v = 4/6). Finally, a logic circuit was constructed with the unimolecular platform by using the combinational stimuli of light and chemical species as inputs and the fluorescence intensity at 595 nm as output.
Multistimuli-Responsive Fluorescent Switches Based on Reversible Decomposition and Regeneration of charge-transfer Complexes

Abstract:Charge-transfer (CT) complexes of 4,4′-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1,1′-biphenyl (CBP) and three acceptors emitted cyan, green, and orange fluorescence, and lower LUMO energy levels of the acceptors promoted longer emission wavelengths. Moreover, they could reversibly convert their luminescent colors under force and then fuming by chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents. Amazingly, acetonitrile vapor annealing might decompose CT complexes to form a pure CBP crystalline phase, which induced sharp changes in the fluorescence colors. As a result, the largest emission shift was more than 220 nm. CT complexes could also be formed through pressing a mixture of a donor and acceptor, and the emission color gradually changed from blue to cyan, green, white, yellow, orange, and even red with extended grinding time, realizing a full color luminescence in the visible light region. Due to their excellent stimuli-responsive behaviors, anticounterfeiting papers with two fluorescent colors have been constructed. Moreover, the fluorescence colors of papers could be reversibly transformed under solvent annealing treatment. High-resolution patterns in both papers might be written by a stylus printer and be erased by solvent fuming with high reversibility.

Abstract:A tristable [2]catenane, composed of a macrocyclic polyether incorporating 1,5-dioxynaphthalene (DNP) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units along with a 4,4'-bipyridinium (BIPY center dot+) radical cation as three very different potential recognition sites, interlocked mechanically with the tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)), was synthesized by donor-acceptor templation, employing a "threading-followed-by-cyclization" approach. In this catenane, movement of the CEPQT(4+) ring in its different redox states among these three potential recognition sites, with corresponding color changes, is achieved by tuning external redox potentials. In the starting state, where no external potential is applied, the ring encircles the TTF unit and displays a green color. Upon oxidation of the TTF unit, the CBPQT(4+) ring moves to the DNP unit, producing a red color. Finally, if all the BIPY2+ units are reduced to BIPY center dot+ radical cations, the resulting CBPQT(2(center dot+)) diradical dication will migrate to the BIPY center dot+ unit, resulting in a purple color. These readily switchable electrochromic properties render the [2]-catenane attractive for use in electro-optical devices.

Abstract:A novel functionalization approach of quinoxaline has been unveiled to develop orange/red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters by modifying the core with three carbazole donors and one or three cyano acceptors. The resulting functionalized TADF emitters demonstrated orange and red emission with promising TADF properties. An organic light-emitting diode fabricated using the orange emitter demonstrated high external quantum efficiency of 18.9%.
