Abstract:In this work, high-resolution, high-speed videos of a Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) in take-off flight were obtained using a photogrammetry system. Using a 3D subdivision surface reconstruction methodology, the butterfly's body/wing deformation and kinematics were modeled and reconstructed from those videos. High fidelity simulations were then carried out in order to understand vortex formation in both near-field and far-field of butterfly wings and examine the associated aerodynamic performance. A Cartesian grid based sharp interface immersed boundary solver was used to handle such flows in all their complexity.

Abstract:The phenomena of the wake flows containing ultrafine particles such as dust and pollutant in the atmosphere are usually observed downwind of the mountains and buildings. Different from the usually heavy particles, the ultrafine particles suspended in fluid undergo the processes of nucleation, growth and coagulation. Coherent structure in typical occurrence of the stretching of the Karman vortex street can be clearly seen in above mentioned gas-particle wakes. The aim of the present study is to explore the effects of coherent structures on the coagulation and growth of ultrafine particles suspended in wake flow. The particle field is represented by employing a moment method to approximate the ultrafine particle general dynamic equation. The fluid flow is obtained by solving the continuity and momentum equations with the large eddy simulation method and the subgrid-scale stresses were parametrized using the dynamic eddy viscosity model. The calculated contours of vorticity were compared with the relevant experimental results. The instantaneous spatial-temporal distribution of the particles are given and analyzed. The effects of the coherent structure on the diffusion and distribution of particle number concentration, polydispersity are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Insects are the undisputed masters of flapping flight in the micro-aerial world. It has been discovered that they rely on a wide array of unsteady aerodynamic mechanisms such as wake capture, leading-edge vortex, Weis–Fogh “clap-and-fling” mechanism, etc. to take off, hover, maneuver, and land. In the current study, we present a direct numerical simulation of a modeled fruitfly in hovering flight based on realistic morphologies of wing, body, and kinematics. Wingwing interaction, wing-body interaction, wing-wake interaction, and associated unsteady aerodynamics are of particular interests in this study. Simulations have shown that the vortex topologies in flow field are distorted due to the wing-wing interaction during the dorsal stroke reversal. Unbalanced lift production is observed on both wing and body between the downstroke and upstroke. Effect of wing kinematics on wing-wing interaction is investigated, too.

Abstract:Bodies freely falling in steady water or air are common scenes encountered in various scientific and engineering fields, including the flapping flight of birds and the reentry of a space shuttle. In this work, the freely falling annular thin disks with small dimensionless moments of inertia I* and Reynolds number Re are investigated experimentally in a water tank. We use stereoscopic vision to record the position and orientation of the disks. The flow structure behind the disks is studied by applying fluorescent dye visualization and PIV method. Varying the geometry dimensionless parameter(the inner to outer diameter ratio ηand I*) of the disks reveals two new falling patterns. When ηcrit1=0.6<η<ηcrit2=0.8, the disks show a random lateral vibration while falling. For high ηcrit2>0.8, the circular vortex loops shed frequently from the disk, which causes a lengthways vibration superimposed onto straight vertical motion. We also observe another two falling patterns reported previously: hula-hoop and helical motion. By comparing the wake structure of the two motions, we find that the vortex layer twists more violently in the hula-hoop motion, which is the reason for the different trajectory between them. Further research on flow field reveals that the torque on the disk that causes the vibration is due to the formation, elongation and shedding of the vortex.

Abstract:The phenomenon of the free-surface vortex forming above a draining intake was simulated by the volume of fluid (VOF) approach and the process of free-surface evolution was visualized numerically. On the basis of Burgers vortex theory, the result was analyzed to provide some theoretical proposals and to get mechanism of free-surface vortex. Abstract:Numerical calculation of the free water vortex is carried out by using Reynolds stress turbulence model and PISO algorithm. VOF(Volume of Fluid) method is used to deal with the free surface problem. The detailed structure and evolution of free water vortex are obtained. It is found that free water vortex is caused by the centralization of rotation energy. The vortex swirl rests with the water rotation direction in tank. Free water vortex is quasi-Rankine's vortex and has two characteristic regions, called inspiratory hole and air uplift region.

Abstract:The flow field of planar jet is simulated by discrete vortex method. The rolling up, rotating and merging processes of large-scale vortex structures in the planar jet are displayed and the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics are disclosed by the simulation results. The instantaneous velocity at the fixed position and the mean velocity of the fluid field are computed. The results of time-averaged velocity simulation are in accordance with the values of the experiments and the unsteady and instable nonlinear characteristics of the large-scale coherent structures in the planar jet are displayed from the instantaneous velocity distributions.

Abstract:A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted to study the unsteady aerodynamics of a virtual flying bumblebee during hovering flight. The integrated geometry of bumblebee was established to define the shape of a three-dimensional virtual bumblebee model with beating its wings, accurately mimicking the three-dimensional movements of wings during hovering flight. The kinematics data of wings documented from the measurement to the bumblebee in normal hovering flight aided by the high-speed video The Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically. The solution provides the flow and pressure fields from which the aerodynamic forces and vorticity wake structure are obtained. Insights into the unsteady aerodynamic force generation process are gained from the force and flow-structure information. The CFD analysis has established an overall understanding of the viscous and unsteady flow around the virtual flying bumblebee and of the time course of instantaneous force production, which reveals that hovering flight is dominated by the unsteady aerodynamics of both the instantaneous dynamics and also the past history of the wing. A coherent leading-edge vortex with axial flow and the attached wingtip vortex and trailing edge vortex were detected. The leading edge vortex, wing tip vortex and trailing edge vortex, which caused by the pressure difference between the upper and the lower surface of wings. The axial flow, which include the spanwise flow and chordwise flow, is derived from the spanwise pressure gradient and chordwise pressure gradient, will stabilize the vortex and gives it a characteristic spiral conical shape. Three-dimensional vortex wake structure of flapping wings in hovering flight

Abstract:Flapping wings continuously create and send vortices into their wake, while imparting downward momentum into the surrounding fluid. However, experimental studies concerning the details of the three-dimensional vorticity distribution and evolution in the far wake are limited. In this study, the three-dimensional vortex wake structure in both the near and far field of a dynamically scaled flapping wing was investigated experimentally, using volumetric three-component velocimetry. A single wing, with shape and kinematics similar to those of a fruitfly, was examined. The overall result of the wing action is to create an integrated vortex structure consisting of a tip vortex (TV), trailing-edge shear layer (TESL) and leading-edge vortex. The TESL rolls up into a root vortex (RV) as it is shed from the wing, and together with the TV, contracts radially and stretches tangentially in the downstream wake. The downwash is distributed in an arc-shaped region enclosed by the stretched tangential vorticity of the TVs and the RVs. A closed vortex ring structure is not observed in the current study owing to the lack of well-established starting and stopping vortex structures that smoothly connect the TV and RV. An evaluation of the vorticity transport equation shows that both the TV and the RV undergo vortex stretching while convecting downwards: a three-dimensional phenomenon in rotating flows. It also confirms that convection and secondary tilting and stretching effects dominate the evolution of vorticity.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to show some of the most important features of flying insects from a control point of view, describe in details the kinematics of insects during flapping flight, establish the corresponding kinematics equations of flying insects, analyze the force and moment acting on the flying insects, and establish the corresponding aerodynamic equations. Through the kinematics equations and aerodynamic equations of flying insects, the trajectory equations and attitude equations have also been established. A detailed mathematical model of flying insects is presented in this paper, which including 3 d.o.f. of wings kinematics, i.e., flapping, lagging and feathering, and 6 d.o.f. of insects body, i.e., yaw, roll, up-down flight, left-right flight and fore-back flight. All these motions of flying insects are interrelated by the kinematics equations, attitude equations, aerodynamics model and dynamics equations of the insects' centroid. In the findal part of this paper, the mathematical simulation model of flapping-wing insects is set up and the corresponding simulation curve created.

Abstract:This study investigates vortex ring instability during droplet impact on thin liquid films using high-speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF). Experiments were conducted using two different setups, capturing the droplet impact from both bottom and side views. The study examines how different dimensionless parameters (Reynolds number, Weber number and dimentionless thickness) influence vortex ring behavior in thin liquid films. Vortices were analyzed by identifying the centers using Gamma_2 scalar and calculating the vortex circulation through a two superposed Lamb-Oseen vortex fitting. The effect of film thickness on vortex dynamics reveals that thinner films lead to greater instability due to higher energy at the moment of wall collision, facilitating the formation of additional vortex structures. Experimental phase mapping highlights the critical threshold of Reynolds number and dimensionless thickness for vortex ring instability. Moreover, the number of fingers formed due to vortex ring instabilities increases with higher Reynolds numbers and thinner films, providing a clear relationship between film thickness, impact energy, and the complexity of resulting fluid structures.

Abstract:The problem of a freely uttering or tumbling plate is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS) by solving the Navier-Stokes equations and body dynamic equations simultaneously. The vortex formation in the transient process and periodic motion of the falling plate is investigated. The correlation between the body kinematics and force generation is discussed. The dierent roles played by viscous force in uttering and tumbling plates are also pointed out.

Abstract:Flapping insects are remarkably agile fliers, adapted to a highly turbulent environment. We present a series of high resolution numerical simulations of a bumblebee interacting with turbulent inflow. We consider both tethered and free flight, the latter with all six degrees of freedom coupled to the Navier--Stokes equations. To this end we vary the characteristics of the turbulent inflow, either changing the turbulence intensity or the spectral distribution of turbulent kinetic energy. Active control is excluded in order to quantify the passive response real animals exhibit during their reaction time delay, before the wing beat can be adapted. Modifying the turbulence intensity shows no significant impact on the cycle-averaged aerodynamical forces, moments and power, compared to laminar inflow conditions. The fluctuations of aerodynamic observables, however, significantly grow with increasing turbulence intensity. Changing the integral scale of turbulent perturbations, while keeping the turbulence intensity fixed, shows that the fluctuation level of forces and moments is significantly reduced if the integral scale is smaller than the wing length. Our study shows that the scale-dependent energy distribution in the surrounding turbulent flow is a relevant factor conditioning how flying insects control their body orientation.

Abstract:Viewed as sinews and muscles of fluid motion, coherent vortical structures with their interactions are key to understanding the flow dynamics. Based upon this observation, we explore the possibility of efficient flow control by directly manipulating vortices numerically inside the flow field based on the vortex definition and identification system of Liutex. The objective is twofold: (1) to study the vortex dynamics, for example, by observing the response of the flow to strengthening or weakening of certain vortices, and (2) to obtain efficient vortex-based control strategies which might lead us to practical applications. In the present numerical study, the manipulating of vortices is achieved by introducing additional source (force) terms to the Navier-Stokes equations, which hereafter will be collectively called Liutex force field model. Methodologies including controlling the rotation strength and centripetal force of particular vortices are detailed in a flow past a cylinder with different control purposes at Reynolds number of 200. Further examples are provided with a cavitating flow around two-dimensional Clark-Y hydrofoil, with particular interests on cavitation suppression. It is illustrated particular vortex with cavitation encircled could be effectively suppressed.

Abstract:Flows around rectangular cylinders with a series of width-to-heightratios are calculated by means of the Improved Finite Analytic Method （IFAM） andthe formation, development and shedding of vortices from the cylinders are simulatedsuccessfully. According to these results of time-dependent processes the physicalphenomena in the flows are investigated in detail, and the discontinuity of Strouhalnumber is explained in the case of the width-to-height ratio equal to 3.0. The numer-ical solutions here show good agreement with the experimental results. In addition,based on several hundreds of the calculated flow patterns a moving picture is madeby the computer image processing technology and recorded on a video tape, and thenthe vivid pictures of the physical process of vortex-shedding can be replayed later andanalysed in detail.

Abstract:Insects, birds, and bats that power and control flight by flapping their wings perform excellent flight stability and maneuverability by rapidly and continuously varying their wing motions. This article provides an overview of the state of the art of vortex-dominated, unsteady flapping aerodynamics from the viewpoint of diversity and uniformity associated with dominant vortices, particularly of the relevant physical aspects of the flight of insects and vertebrates in the low- and intermediate-Reynolds-number ( Re) regime of 10 0 to 10 6 . After briefly describing wing morphology and kinematics, we discuss the main vortices generated by flapping wings and the aerodynamic forces associated with these structures, focusing on leading-edge vortices (LEVs), wake vortices, and vortices generated by wing motions over a broad Re range. The LEVs are intensified by dynamic wing morphing in bird and bat flight, producing a significantly elevated vortex lift. The complex wake vortices are the footprints of lift generation; thus, the time-averaged vortex lift can be estimated from wake velocity data. Computational fluid dynamics modeling, quasi-steady models, and vortex lift models are useful tools to elucidate the intrinsic relationships between the lift and the dominant vortices in the near- and far-fields in flapping flight. The close-up images depict the destabilization and breakup of the annular air gap and the subsequent entrainment of bubbles into the bulk liquid.

Abstract:Two tandem flapping wings in viscous flow were modeled by using the immersed boundary method for exploration of the aerodynamics of dragonfly in hovering flight. Interaction between the forewing and the hindwing, and its effect on the lift forces, were examined by varying the phase difference of the wing motions and the inter-distance of the two wings. Two vortex interaction modes were identified at different phase differences and inter-distances, which give rise to significant variations of the lift forces. The first interaction mode increases the lift of the forewing and the second one enhances the lift of the hindwing. The two modes occur at different time during a flapping period and have different influence on the lift of wings as the phase difference varies.
