Abstract:The infrared transmitting surface crystallized chalcohalide glasses containing nontoxic and excellent nonlinear optical AgGaGeS4 crystallites were fabricated by heat-treatment of the as-prepared 30GeS2·35Ga2S3·35AgCl chalcohalide glass at 350°C (Tg −10°C) for 24h. An intensive second harmonic generation (SHG) was observed clearly using the Maker fringe technique, and the origin of SHG was mainly ascribed to the AgGaGeS4 nonlinear optical crystallites contained in the surface crystallized layer. The thickness of the surface crystallized layer showing SHG activation is approximate 50μm. The χ(2) susceptibility of the prepared surface crystallized 30GeS2·35Ga2S3·35AgCl chalcohalide glass is calculated to be about 12.4pm/V at a fundamental wavelength of 1064nm, which indicates a promising nonlinear optical material in the infrared spectral region.

Abstract:Transparent glass ceramics were prepared by heat treating of the as-prepared 80GeS2·10Ga2S3·10CdI2 glass at 370°C (Tg+15°C) for 72h (labeled as GGCd10-370). The existence of α-CdGa2S4 crystal in GGCd10-370 glass ceramics has been testified by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Using the typical Maker fringe technique, SHG was observed in the original transparent GGCd10-370 glass ceramics successfully, which is mainly ascribed to the α-CdGa2S4 nonlinear optical microcrystal. And the SH intensity is almost 0.8 times larger than that of the standard quartz reference. It can be also deduced that the thickness of crystalline layer is a little larger than the coherent length, lc≈2.7μm.

Abstract:Ge-Ga-Ag-S chalcogenide glasses with the composition Ge30Ga3Ag4S63 were obtained by the conventional melt-quenching method. According to the visible-infrared and infrared spectra, Ge30Ga3Ag4S63 chalcogenide glass possesses wide transmittance window from 510 nm in the visible region up to 11.5 μ in the infrared region. And the present glass has better glass-forming ability (the difference between glass transition temperature and the peak temperature of crystallization is larger than 100 °C). Utilizing maker-fringe technique, a prominent second-harmonic generation was observed in Ge30Ga3Ag4S63 chalcogenide glass after irradiated by an electron beam (Accelerating voltage: 25 kV; Irradiating current: 15 nA; Irradiating time: 10 min). And the mechanism of second-harmonic generation in the Ge-Ga-Ag-S system glasses was discussed.

Abstract:Utilizing Maker fringe (MF) method, second-harmonic generation (SHG) has been observed within the GeS2–Ga2S3–CdS pseudo-ternary glasses through thermal/electrical poling technique. The SHG phenomenon was considered to be the result of breakage of the glassy macroscopic isotropy originated from the reorientations of dipoles during the thermal/electrical poling process. Under the same poling condition conducted with 5kV and 280°C for 30min, the maximum value of second-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(2) of the poled (100−x)GeS2·x(0.5Ga2S3·0.5CdS) glasses was obtained to be ≈4.36pm/V when the value of x is equal to 30. Nonlinear dependence of χ(2) on compositions of these glasses can be well explained according to the theory related to the reorientation of dipoles.

Abstract:Utilizing Maker fringe method, second-harmonic generation (SHG) of electrical poled chalcogenide glasses in the GeS2 systems including GeS2-X2S3-CdS (X=Ga, Sb) and GeS2-Ga2S3- Y2S3 (Y=P, As, Sb) were studied. The experiment results indicate that the values of second-order nonlinearity induced in chalcogenide glasses have tight relations with glass composition and poling conditions, and the mechanism can be explained by dipole reorientation model.

Abstract:Second-harmonic generation in 60GeS(2)-2OGa(2)S(3)-20KBr chalcohalide glass was investigated by the thermal poling method. A large second-order nonlinear susceptibility, as high as 7.0 pm/V, was obtained in a poled sample by Maker fringe analysis. We believe this to be the first time that a clear second-harmonic wave was observed in chalcohalide glasses containing large amount of alkali ions (6.25 at. %). Abstract:With the method of Maker fringe, second-harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in Ge–As–S glasses irradiated by electron beam. It is related to the space–charge electrostatic field which makes the glasses poled and breaks the centrosymmetry of the glasses. So one new ministructure is formed and can keep constant for a long time, which makes the glasses difficult to restore relaxationally to its origin state and induces SHG. Second-order nonlinearity χ(2) as high as 0.8 pm/V was obtained. The results of thermally stimulated depolarization current measurements indicated that the poled regions were located at the superficial layers of the glass surfaces (several micrometers), which were the same as the calculated result in theory. The nonlinearities in Ge–As–S glasses are stable.

Abstract:Chalcogenide glasses in the GeS2–Ga2S3–Ag2S pseudo-ternary system were prepared by melt-quenching technique. The structural evolvement of the glasses was studied by Raman spectroscopy. The Raman results show that the addition of Ag2S involves the breaking of [S3Ge–GeS3] ethane-like units and the formation of Ag–S ionic bonds. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that the glasses have relatively high-glass transition temperatures and good thermal stabilities. These GeS2–Ga2S3–Ag2S glasses have a wide range of transmission approximately from 0.50 to 12.5μm. In addition, with the method of Maker fringe, SHG was observed in the 0.9GeS2–0.05Ga2S3–0.05Ag2S glass irradiated by an electron beam. The value of second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility d is as large as 6.6pm/V, and the poling mechanism of electron beam irradiation was also discussed in this work.

Abstract:Using an 8 µm long-wave infrared laser as the fundamental wave, we achieved second-harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation simultaneously in AgGaGe5Se12 and obtained a 4 µm laser output. Among them, SHG was achieved in the 173 nm spectral range of the fundamental wave, which was consistent with theoretical calculations. The average power of the obtained 4 µm laser was 41 mW, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 3.2%. The measured temperature acceptance bandwidth (LδT) (FWHM) was 50 K·cm; the angular acceptance bandwidth (Lδθ) (FWHM) was 13.3 mrad·cm; and the average absorption coefficient in the wavelength range of 0.86-11.30 µm was 0.07cm-1. In addition, the spectral acceptance bandwidth (Lδλ) of fundamental wave in AgGaGe5Se12 SHG and the spectral gain bandwidth of frequency downconversion in AgGaGe5Se12 were calculated. In view of the small absorption coefficient, the large temperature acceptance bandwidth, and the large spectral gain bandwidth, we conclude that AgGaGe5Se12 is a suitable nonlinear crystal for high-power short/mid/long-wave infrared lasers and frequency conversions of nanosecond-femtosecond infrared lasers. These results are conducive to the further development of AgGaGe5Se12 lasers.

Abstract:Third-order optical nonlinearities, chi((3)) of GeS(2)-Ga(2)S(3)-AgCl chalcohalide glasses have been studied systematically utilizing the femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr effect (OKE) technique at 820nm, showing that the value of chi((3)) enhances with increasing atomic ratio of (S+Cl/2)/(Ge+Ga). From the compositional dependence of glass structure by Raman spectra, a strong dependence of chi;(3) upon glass structure has been found, i.e. compared with [Cl(x)S(3-x)Ge(Ga)-Ge(Ga)S(3-x)Cl(x)] ethane-like s.u. as the structural defectiveness, [Ge(Ga)S(4-x)Cl(x)] mixed tetrahedra make greater contribution to the enhancement of chi((3)). The maximum chi(3) among the present glasses is as large as 5.26x10(-13)esu (A1 (80GeS(2)-10Ga(2)S(3-) 10AgCl)), and the nonlinear refractive index (n2) of A1 glass is also up to 4.60x10(-15) cm(2)/W. In addition, using Maker fringe technique, SHG was observed in the representative A1 glass poled by electron beam (25 kV, 25 nA, 15 min), and the second-order optical nonlinear susceptibility is estimated to be greater than 6.1 pm/V. There was no evident structural change detected in the as-prepared and after irradiated A1 glass by the Raman spectra, and maybe only electronic transition and distortion of electron cloud occurred in the glasses. The large third/second-order optical nonlinearities have made these GeS(2)-Ga(2)S(3)-AgCl chalcohalide glasses as promising materials applied in photoelectric fields.

Abstract:After thermally poled, second-harmonic generation was observed from 0.85GeS2·0.1Sb2S3·0.05CdS chalcogenide glass by using the Maker fringe method, and the second-order nonlinearity (SON) susceptibility, χ(2), is 9pm/V at maximum. The stability of SON is excellent and its theoretical decaying time according to the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurement is as long as 654 days. The origin of SON, the effects of poling parameters and the reasons of angle variation of maximum SH intensity in Maker fringe, were discussed based on dipole reorientation model. With its large and stable SON, this novel nonlinear chalcogenide glass is a very promising material that can be applied to many optical fields in the future.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation has been observed in electrically polarized CuCl-microcrystallite-doped glass. The glass was prepared by means of melting–quenching method and poled at 200°C for 1 h under applied dc field of 4 kV. The incident angular variation of SHG intensity for the polarized glass was measured. To explain the effect, it is proposed that the second-order nonlinear polarization results from the dipolar orientation in the glass.

Abstract:Upon 808 nm excitation, an intense broadband near-infrared emission from Cr4+ has been observed in 80GeS2-20Ga2S3 chalcogenide glass-ceramics (GCs) containing Ga2S3 nanocrystals. The emission band peaking at 1250 nm covers the O, E, S bands (1000-1500 nm). The formation of Ga2S3 nanocrystals (∼20 nm) increases the emission intensity of Cr4+ by more than three times. The quantum efficiency of the present GCs is as great as 36% at room temperature.

Abstract:In this work, we present a systemic study with respect to the third-order optical nonlinear (TONL) features of chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) within a germanium-gallium-sulfur (Ge-Ga-S, GGS) ternary system. The research outcomes show that the TONL attributes of GGS ChGs are highly tunable by glass composition, and the flexibility is higher than many other reported ChG systems. We have found that the TONL attributes of GGS ChGs depend remarkably on the deviation level of glass composition from chemical stoichiometry, which is associated with the presence of different types of defective units in the GGS glass network. The TONL dispersion of GGS ChGs is discovered to deviate from the classic theories based on crystalline semiconductors, as a result of the presence of multiple-steps absorption process occurred between gap states near the band gap, which renders the GGS ChGs applicable for various types of nonlinear optical functionalities.

Abstract:By investigating the Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) of the bulk PbO/B2O3 glass sample with different compositions after thermopoling, it was found that there was an optimal poling temperature for each sample with different composition and there was a relation between optimal temperature and glass transition temperature. At their own optimal temperatures, samples had different frequency doubling efficiencies. We also found that the frequency doubling efficiency increased with the increase in poling voltage. We used a model of the release of effective dipoles which had been proposed to explain the super-quadratic relation between the second-order nonlinearity and the poling voltage of the bulk PbO/B2O3 glass.

Abstract:The third-order optical nonlinearities of 80GeS2·(20−x)Ga2S3·xY2S3 (x=0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and Y=Sb or In) chalcogenide glasses were investigated utilizing the Z-scan method at the wavelength of 800nm and their linear optical properties and structure were also studied. By analyzing the compositional dependences and possible influencing factors including the linear refractive index, the concentration of lone electron pairs, the optical bandgap and the amount of weak covalent/homopolar bonds, it indicates that the electronic contribution in weak heteropolar covalent and homopolar metallic bonds is responsible for large nonlinear refractive index n2 in the chalcogenide glasses. These chalcogenide glasses have characteristics of environmentally friendship, wide transparency in the visible region, high nonlinear refractive index n2 and low nonlinear absorption coefficient β, and would be expected to be used in the all-optical switches working at 1330nm and 1550nm telecommunication wavelengths.

Abstract:We report the kinetics of below band-gap light induced photodarkening in (80-x)GeS(2)-20Ga(2)S(3)-xAgI (x = 0 and 20 mol %) bulk chalcogenide glasses by measuring the time evolution of transmission spectra at every 10 milliseconds. The results prove clearly the enhancement of photosensivity upon doping of AgI compound in glasses. It is interesting to find that PD observed in AgI-doped glass totally disappears two hours later after the laser exposing even at room temperature. In significant contrast to 80GeS(2)-20Ga(2)S(3) glass that the metastable part of PD remains for a long time. We expect such a fast auto-recovery property in AgI-doped glass can be utilized for optical signal processing.
Photoinduced second harmonic generation of CuI microcrystallite doped glass

Abstract:Photoinduced second harmonic generation is observed in CuI microcrystallite doped glass prepared by the sol-gel process when the glass has been irradiated with intense 1.06 μm and frequency doubled laser beams from a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. It is verified that the signal is produced from a second-order nonlinear process by the dependence of the signal intensity on input power. It is found that the signal intensity increases with the irradiation time and gradually approaches saturation. The effect may be explained reasonably by the DC field model.
