Abstract:Metric of quantum states plays an important role in quantum information theory. In this letter, we find the deep connection between quantum logic theory and quantum information theory. Using the method of quantum logic, we can get a famous inequality in quantum in formation theory, and we answer a question raised by S. Gudder.

Abstract:A generalised definition of the metric of quantum states is proposed by using the techniques of differential geometry. The metric of quantum state space derived earlier by Anandan, is reproduced and verified here by this generalised definition. The metric of quantum states in the configuration space and its possible geometrical framework is explored. Also, invariance of the metric of quantum states under local gauge transformations, coordinate transformations, and the relativistic transformations is discussed.

Abstract:We investigate a measure of distinguishability defined by the quantum Chernoff bound, which naturally induces the quantum Chernoff metric over a manifold of quantum states. Based on a quantum statistical model, we alternatively derive this metric by means of perturbation expansion. Moreover, we show that the quantum Chernoff metric coincides with the infinitesimal form of the quantum Hellinger distance, and reduces to the variant version of the quantum Fisher information for the single-parameter case. We also give the exact form of the quantum Chernoff metric for a qubit system containing a single parameter.

Geometric-Like imaginarity: quantification and state conversion

Abstract:From the perspective of resource-theoretic approach, this study explores the quantification of imaginary in quantum physics. We propose a well defined measure of imaginarity, the geometric-like measure of imaginarity. Compared with the usual geometric imaginarity measure, this geometric-like measure of imaginarity exhibits smaller decay difference under quantum noisy channels and higher stability. As applications, we show that both the optimal probability of state transformations from a pure state to an arbitrary mixed state via real operations, and the maximal probability of stochastic-approximate state transformations from a pure state to an arbitrary mixed state via real operations with a given fidelity $f$, are given by the geometric-like measure of imaginarity.

Identifying non-Hermitian critical points with quantum metric

Abstract:The geometric properties of quantum states is fully encoded by the quantum geometric tensor. The real and imaginary parts of the quantum geometric tensor are the quantum metric and Berry curvature, which characterize the distance and phase difference between two nearby quantum states in Hilbert space, respectively. For conventional Hermitian quantum systems, the quantum metric corresponds to the fidelity susceptibility and has already been used to specify quantum phase transitions from the geometric perspective. In this work, we extend this wisdom to the non-Hermitian systems for revealing non-Hermitian critical points. To be concrete, by employing numerical exact diagonalization and analytical methods, we calculate the quantum metric and corresponding order parameters in various non-Hermitian models, which include two non-Hermitian generalized Aubry-André models and non-Hermitian cluster and mixed-field Ising models. We demonstrate that the quantum metric of eigenstates in these non-Hermitian models exactly identifies the localization transitions, mobility edges, and many-body quantum phase transitions, respectively. We further show that this strategy is robust against the finite-size effect and different boundary conditions.

Abstract:The pairwise quantum correlations of symmetric multi-qubit states are studied by using the geometric measure of quantum discord (GMQD). The explicit expressions of the GMQD for the Dicke states and their superpositions are given. By comparing the GMQD with quantum discord, we conclude that they display similar behaviour. From the results, we know that most of the states we have considered exhibit pairwise quantum correlations.

Abstract:The recent realization of twisted, two-dimensional, bilayers exhibiting strongly correlated states has created a platform in which the relation between the properties of the electronic bands and the nature of the correlated states can be studied in unprecedented ways. The reason is that these systems allow extraordinary control of the electronic bands' properties, for example by varying the relative twist angle between the layers forming the system. In particular, in twisted bilayers the low energy bands can be tuned to be very flat and with a nontrivial quantum metric. This allows the quantitative and experimental exploration of the relation between the metric of Bloch quantum states and the properties of correlated states. In this work we first review the general connection between quantum metric and the properties of correlated states that break a continuous symmetry. We then discuss the specific case when the correlated state is a superfluid and show how the quantum metric is related to the superfluid stiffness. To exemplify such relation we show results for the case of superconductivity in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene. We conclude by discussing possible research directions to further elucidate the connection between quantum metric and correlated states' properties.

Abstract:It is a fundamental question that why quantum mechanics uses complex numbers instead of only real numbers. To address this topic, recently, a rigorous resource theory for the imaginarity of quantum states were established, and several imaginarity measures were proposed. In this work, we propose a new imaginarity measure based on the Tsallis relative entropy. This imaginarity measure has explicit expression, and also, it is computable for bosonic Gaussian states.

Abstract:We revisit the connection between entanglement entropy and quantum metric in topological lattice systems, and provide an elegant and concise proof of this connection. In gapped two-dimensional lattice models with well-defined tight-binding Hamiltonians, we show that the entanglement entropy is intimately related to the quantum metric of electronic states.

The Gauge Theory of Measurement-Based Quantum Computation

Abstract:Measurement-Based Quantum Computation (MBQC) is a model of quantum computation, which uses local measurements instead of unitary gates. Here we explain that the MBQC procedure has a fundamental basis in an underlying gauge theory. This perspective provides a theoretical foundation for global aspects of MBQC. The gauge transformations reflect the freedom of formulating the same MBQC computation in different local reference frames. The main identifications between MBQC and gauge theory concepts are: (i) the computational output of MBQC is a holonomy of the gauge field, (ii) the adaptation of measurement basis that remedies the inherent randomness of quantum measurements is effected by gauge transformations. The gauge theory of MBQC also plays a role in characterizing the entanglement structure of symmetry-protected topologically (SPT) ordered states, which are resources for MBQC. Our framework situates MBQC in a broader context of condensed matter and high energy theory.

Abstract:We consider the quantum information metric of a family of CFTs perturbed by an exactly marginal operator, which has the dual description of the Euclidean Janus geometries. We first clarify its two dimensional case dual to the three dimensional Janus geometry, which recently appeared in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1507.07555" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1507.07555">arXiv:1507.07555</a>. We generalize this correspondence to higher dimensions and get a precise agreement between the both sides. We also show that the mixed-state information metric of the same family of CFTs has a dual description in the Euclidean version of the Janus time-dependent black hole geometry.

Quantifying imaginarity in terms of pure-state imaginarity

Abstract:Complex numbers are widely used in quantum physics and are indispensable components for describing quantum systems and their dynamical behavior. The resource theory of imaginarity has been built recently, enabling a systematic research of complex numbers in quantum information theory. In this work, we develop two theoretical methods for quantifying imaginarity, motivated by recent progress within resource theories of entanglement and coherence. We provide quantifiers of imaginarity by the convex roof construction and quantifiers of the imaginarity by the least imaginarity of the input pure states under real operations. We also apply these tools to study the state conversion problem in resource theory of imaginarity.

Abstract:In quantum metrology, quantum probe states are capable of estimating unknown physical parameters to precisions beyond classical limits. What qualities do such states possess? Here we relate the performance of a probe state at estimating a parameter ϕ – as quantified by the quantum Fisher information – to the amount of purity it loses when ϕ undergoes statistical fluctuation. This indicates that the better a state is for estimating ϕ, the more it decoheres when ϕ is subject to noise.

Abstract:A framework for a quantum information theory is introduced that is based on the measure of quantum information associated with probability distribution predicted by quantum measuring of state. The entanglement between states of measured system and "pointer" states of measuring apparatus, which is generated by dynamical process of quantum measurement, plays a dominant role in expressing quantum characteristics of information theory. The quantum mutual information of transmission and reception of quantum states along a noisy quantum channel is given by the change of quantum measured information. In our approach, it is not necessary to purify the transmitted state by means of the reference system. It is also clarified that there exist relations between the approach given in this letter and those given by other authors.

Abstract:It is known that there are infinitely many distinguishability metrics for mixed quantum states. This freedom, in turn, leads to metric-dependent interpretations of physically meaningful geometric quantities such as complexity and volume of quantum states. In this paper, we first present an explicit and unabridged mathematical discussion on the relation between the Sjoqvist metric and the Bures metric for arbitrary nondegenerate mixed quantum states, using the notion of decompositions of density operators by means of ensembles of pure quantum states. Then, to enhance our comprehension of the difference between these two metrics from a physics standpoint, we compare the formal expressions of these two metrics for arbitrary thermal quantum states specifying quantum systems in equilibrium with a reservoir at non-zero temperature. For illustrative purposes, we show the difference between these two metrics in the case of a simple physical system characterized by a spin-qubit in an arbitrarily oriented uniform and stationary external magnetic field in thermal equilibrium with a finite-temperature bath. Finally, we compare the Bures and Sjoqvist metrics in terms of their monotonicity property.

Abstract:The quantum coupling of two given quantum states denotes the set of bipartite states whose marginal states are these given two states. In this paper, we provide tight inequalities to describe the structure of quantum coupling. These inequalities directly imply that the trace distance between two quantum states cannot be determined by the quantum analog of the earth mover’s distance, thus ruling out the equality version of the quantum Kantorovich–Rubinstein theorem for trace distance even in the finite-dimensional case. In addition, we provide an inequality that can be regarded as a quantum generalization of the Kantorovich–Rubinstein theorem. Then, we generalize our inequalities and apply them to the three tripartite quantum marginal problems. Numerical tests with a three-qubit system show that our criteria are much stronger than the known criteria: the strong subadditivity of entropy and the monogamy of entanglement.
The qubit information logic theory for understanding multi-qubit entanglement and designing exotic entangled states

Abstract:We develop a "qubit information logic" (QIL) theory that uses the "qubit information equation" (QIE) and logic to describe the correlation behaviors of multi-qubit entanglement. Introducing the "global information status" and "local information availability", the QIL gives an alternative and natural interpretation of the "spooky action" and the quantum no-communication theorem. Compared to the conventional entropy-based entanglement theories, the QIL directly describes the correlation of each possible pair of qubits and how the correlation changes when other qubits are measured. This makes the QIL more advantageous in describing the correlation properties of multi-qubit entanglement, which is illustrated by studying the dormant entanglement phenomenon. The QIL theory's usefulness is further demonstrated by designing an exotic quantum state where two qubits can be entangled but not correlated in any arbitrary basis. Overall the QIL provides an alternative and intuitive understanding of multi-qubit entanglement that is, compared to the conventional theories, directly focused on the correlation behaviors between qubits and thus more suitable for designing exotic quantum states that may be used in quantum algorithms.

Abstract:Quantum Wasserstein divergences are modified versions of quantum Wasserstein distances defined by channels, and they are conjectured to be genuine metrics on quantum state spaces by De Palma and Trevisan. We prove triangle inequality for quantum Wasserstein divergences for every quantum system described by a separable Hilbert space and any quadratic cost operator under the assumption that a particular state involved is pure, and all the states have finite energy. We also provide strong numerical evidence suggesting that the triangle inequality holds in general, for an arbitrary choice of states.
