Abstract:How do children develop the mapping between prosody and other levels of linguistic knowledge? This question has received considerable attention in child language research. In the present study two experiments were conducted to investigate four- to five-year-old Mandarin-speaking children's sensitivity to prosody in ambiguity resolution. Experiment 1 used eye-tracking to assess children's use of stress in resolving structural ambiguities. Experiment 2 took advantage of special properties of Mandarin to investigate whether children can use intonational cues to resolve ambiguities involving speech acts. The results of our experiments show that children's use of prosodic information in ambiguity resolution varies depending on the type of ambiguity involved. Children can use prosodic information more effectively to resolve speech act ambiguities than to resolve structural ambiguities. This finding suggests that the mapping between prosody and semantics/pragmatics in young children is better established than the mapping between prosody and syntax.

Abstract:Yuan Zirang is a famous phonology scholar in the late Ming Dynasty.He discussed Chinese phonetic structure and some problems about language,phonology,character in Zixue Yuanyuan.He elaborated his rich phonological theory.Pronunciation was divided into standard pronunciation,popular pronunciation(pronunciation at that time) and dialect pronunciation.The initials were divided into Damu,Xiaomu,Hu,Xi,Duqing and Duzhuo.The finals were divided into Xi,Pi and Sihu.Four tones were Pingzhong,Shanglao,Qunen and Ruji.

Abstract:Both xieyin(叶音)of Shijizhuan(诗集传)and zizimuyun(赀字母韵)of Gujin Yunhui Juyao (古今韵会举要)have been considered as the main evidences for a long time that the apical appeared in the Song Dynasty,but the new study finds that it is not true at all,so it is necessary to investigate zizimuyun again,zizimuyun and zhisibu(支思部)of Zhongyuanyinyun(中原音韵) are different in nature.Wu Yu represented that there were two kinds of pronunciations—— standard pronunciation and vulgar one,of the dentats of zhikaisan(止开三),and that zhisibu(支思部)corresponded with the standard pronunciations,zizimuyun with the vulgar ones which conform with modern southern dialects.Therefore it is the phonetic development model of southern dialects since the Song and Yuan Dynasties,not the direct origin of the apical that the independence of zizimuyun reflects.

This paper gives a detailed textual research on the age of this book, introduces the edition system of it, and summarizes the features of the phonology it described. Abstract:YE Bing-jing is a famous scholar of phonology in the Ming Dynasty.He analyzed the composition of Chinese phonetic units,the mechanism of sound change creatively and made the syllabary of Chinese at that time.He divided the finals into two grades of up and down and divided each grade into two,then constituted four Hu of Kai Qi He Cuo.He coordinated initials with four Hu and named it four faction ancestor.The initials can also be divided into four kinds of types.His analyses have much significance in the history of linguistics.

Abstract:Huang Zhong Tong Yun is a rhyme chart with characters of Northeast dialect. Huang Zhong Tong Yun remains Wo Mu, which is different from the Peking pronunciation of that times.The relations between Jing series and Zhao series in Huang Zhong Tong Yun are complicated. Huang Zhong Tong Yun Ri Mu is different from the other rhyme books in Ming and Qing dynasties. The words of Ri Mu come from the Ri Mu and Yu Mu. Huang Zhong Tong Yun system is consist with that of Deng Yun Tu Jing with a little difference.

Abstract:The dental and sibilant initial words of rhyme Han(旱) and Han(翰)in Guangyun(广韵) were shifted into rhyme Huan(缓) and Huan(换) respectively in Jiyun(集韵).This phenomenon is closely related to the division of rhyme Han(寒) in modern Chinese dialects.It reflects that rhyme Han(寒) in early central plain dialect,as well as Wu dialect,were divided into two rhymes according to grave/acute of the initial consonant.But later Mandarin dialect did not evolve along this direction because of the appearance of palatal medial in second grade velar words.

Abstract:From 15th to 18th centuries,when Korean,Japanese and European linguists compiled Chinese dictionaries,all of them adopted a strategy of respecting the Hongwu Rhyme without employing it. In their books,they not only described the status of Chinese Mandarin,but also labeled the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese characters by Hangeul,Kana and Latin letters respectively,which left us rich sources of literature to study Mandarin in Ming and Qing Dynasties. These literatures have revealed that Nanjing Dialect had been the standard pronunciation of Mandarin ever since Hongwuzhengyun was published until the mid-18th century. However,because of moving the capital to Beijing,Mandarin was influenced by Beijing Dialect,and gradually separated into two standards of pronunciation. One was based on Nanjing Dialect and the other on Beijing Dialect; the former was regarded as orthodox while the latter was popular in the court.

Abstract:Historical Chinese Phonology is usually known as a unique learning. During "the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan", research on the initials of Old Chinese has made a breakthrough in the area of Old Chinese Phonology in that it proposed that complex consonant initials, consonant cluster initials and nasal consonant initials form a trisection pattern. During this period, the principle of phonetic compounds has been addressed and the source of research materials on Old Chinese Phonology has been expanded to some extent. Meanwhile, it has become a focus to combine the study of Old Chinese Phonology with the study of ancient Chinese characters. In terms of Middle Chinese Phonology, there are some new achievements in phonetic research of books specialized in phonology and semantics and rhyme books. The phonetic differences between the Northern dialects and the Southern dialects have also been addressed. As for Modern Chinese Phonology, the phonetic researches on the Song, Liao, J in and Yuan dynasties have also received considerable scholarly attention apart from the achievements in this traditional research area of rhyme books and rhyme tables. The excavation of materials on phonetic transcription, dialect literature and extraterritorial literature have spawned new achievements. Database construction of Chinese phonology has been put on the agenda. During "the Fourteenth FiveYear Plan", research on regional general phonetics and periodicization of dialectal sounds will be a fundamental task in the study of the history of Chinese Phonetics. In the context of national integration, deeper integrative study between the ethnic languages (literature) and Chinese (literature) will be a new highlight. It will become a new exploring area to categorize and study the relevant literature on Modern Chinese Phonology characteristic of non-rhyme books and non-rhyme tables.

Abstract:By observing the consonantal initial conditions of the closing diphthongization from a former *u rhyme which occurred in characters belonging to Middle mu rhyme group ((sic)韵(sic)) in modern Chinese dialects, it would be find that the closing diphthongization of u rhyme behind different types of initials observes the following hierarchy principle: +P/+K<+T<+Ts<+n<+l. From the perspective of phonetics, the problem why the diphthongization of u rhyme behind grave initials usually implies the diphthongization behind acute initials can be explained.
Corpus-Based Study on the Evolution of the Lexical Phonetic Forms from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese

Abstract:The evolution of lexical syllable forms from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese is an issue of great significance in the study of Chinese lexis. This paper, based on corpus linguistics methodology, selects credible and representative texts from both Old Chinese and Middle Chinese and conducts a quantitative study from multiple perspectives. In terms of word types, polysyllabic words remained the majority in both Old Chinese and Middle Chinese, and those with three or more syllables accounted for an increased proportion in Middle Chinese. In terms of word tokens, the average frequency and total occurrences of monosyllabic words were far higher than that of polysyllabic words, indicating that monosyllabic words occupied a primary position in language use. In terms of high-frequency words, monosyllabic words predominated from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese, but within a certain range of frequency, Middle Chinese translated Buddhist scriptures featured a significantly higher proportion of polysyllabic words than Old Chinese texts as well as Chinese native texts of the same period. In terms of the lexicon of given books, the lexical syllable forms in Chinese native texts displayed a slow and steady development from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese, while Middle Chinese translated Buddhist scriptures demonstrated a much higher degree of polysyllablization than Chinese native texts of the same period. On the whole, the syllable forms of Chinese native words presented a continuous and slow evolution from Old Chinese to Middle Chinese, and language contact accelerated the polysyllablization of Chinese lexis..

Abstract:Abstract Rhyming plays an important role in the study of Chinese phonology. Traditionally it is believed that there are two types of rhyming between finals: free rhyming and mixed rhyming. Finals which rhyme with each other freely constitute a rhyme group, while the rhyming between finals from different rhyme groups can only be mixed rhyming. By analyzing the rhyming in the modern Beijing dialect using a statistical method, we find a third type: semi-free rhyming, which is close to free rhyming. As a whole, these two types can be called pan-free rhyming . Thus, the definition of rhyme group must be revised as the maximum unit of pan-free rhyming , because free rhyming is no longer a transitive relation, i.e., when both final pairs A–B and B–C are free rhyming, A–C may be semi-free rhyming. As for the Beijing dialect, our statistical test results approve that non- érhuà finals are divided into 15 rhyme groups, and subsequent phonological analyses show that words in the same rhyme group share the same nucleus and coda. Besides finals, tones also function apparently in rhyming, but in a different way from the three types mentioned above. As more Chinese dialects are studied, the typology of rhyming in Chinese dialects can be analyzed, creating a useful reference for the study of Chinese historical phonology.
Reconstruction of Uncertain Historical Evolution of the Polysyllablization of Chinese Lexis

Abstract:Polysyllablization, closely related to phonetics, semantics, and syntactics, is one of the fundamental trends in the development of Chinese lexis. However, with lots of uncertainties in the historical evolution of Chinese language, the quantitative modeling and reconstruction of polysyllablization remain open questions. Based on the Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Words , a mapping from the words to their time of occurrence is built. With the inverse mapping on random samples, the newly produced words with different numbers of syllables in different time periods are obtained. Finally the total quadratic variation minimization model is adopted to estimate the trend of polysyllablization. As a novel exploration in the computational linguistics, the results agree with the stage division of historical Chinese and answer some difficult questions related to polysyllablization in a quantitative manner.
A Brief Study on Wu Dialect Sounds in Local Chronicles

Abstract:A local chronicle is a sort of literature which records the information within an area or a certain space-time.The dialect document in a local chronicle is one of the important documents for studying ancient Chinese dialect,based on which,the history of modern Chinese dialect can be traced back.The article make a brief study on WU dialect sounds from some key local chronicles in Jiangsu and Zhejiang as of the Song Dynasty by combining other literatures and utilizing contemporary Wu dialect.

Abstract:Some scholars intended to take the rhymes in poetry of Tang Dynasty and Wudai period as the reference of the pronunciation of Beijing local dialect since there were no books revealing the nature of pronunciation in Beijing dialect left of that time.The author of this paper has compared the poetry rhymes of Beijing area and other areas and found out that the rhymes in poetry of Wudai period in Beijing area were no difference with other areas of that time and it could not reflect the features of Beijing dialect.The paper agrees with the conventional idea that there were very few poems reflecting the true natures of the local dialects in different period of times of history instead of revealing the common nature of the pronunciation in Chinese language of respective times.

Abstract:The areas sharing the same sound change are usually in accordance with historical administrational regions as a result of the impact of the dominant culture. In this paper, with examples such as the modern reflexes of division 2, division 3 and 4 of Middle Chinese Jianmu Kaikou initials, and modern reflexes of Middle Chinese Bingmu initials in level-tone syllables as shown in GIS, the author identifies two critical periods in forming Chinese southeastern dialects: Weijin as the formation period of colloquial readings of Chinese dialects, and Tang, Wudai, Song, and Yuan as the formation period of literary readings of Chinese dialects.
