Abstract:We prove that lowness for weak genericity is equivalent to semicomputable traceability which is strictly between hyperimmune-freeness and computable traceability. We also show that semi-computable traceability implies lowness for weak randomness. These results refute a conjecture raised by several people.

Abstract:It is shown that a set is low for weakly 1-generic iff it has neither dnr nor hyperimmune Turing degree. As this notion is more general than being recursively traceable, this answers negatively a recent question on the characterization of these sets. Furthermore, it is shown that every set which is low for weakly 1-generic is also low for Kurtz-random.

Abstract:A $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ class $P$ is thin if every $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ subclass $Q$ of $P$ is the intersection of $P$ with some clopen set. In 1993, Cenzer, Downey, Jockusch and Shore initiated the study of Turing degrees of members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes, and proved that degrees containing no members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes can be recursively enumerable, and can be minimal degree below {\bf 0}$'$. In this paper, we work on this topic in terms of genericity, and prove that all 2-generic degrees contain no members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes. In contrast to this, we show that all 1-generic degrees below {\bf 0}$'$ contain members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes.

Abstract:A real is called integer-valued random if no integer-valued martingale can win arbitrarily much capital betting against it. A real is low for integer-valued randomness if no integer-valued martingale recursive in A can succeed on an integer-valued random real. We show that lowness for integer-valued randomness coincides with recursiveness, as is the case for computable randomness.

Abstract:We study randomness notions given by higher recursion theory, establishing the relationships Π 1 1 -randomness ⊂ Π 1 1 -Martin-Löf randomness ⊂ Δ 1 1 -randomness = Δ 1 1 -Martin-Löf randomness. We characterize the set of reals that are low for Δ 1 1 randomness as precisely those that are Δ 1 1 -traceable. We prove that there is a perfect set of such reals.

Abstract:We contribute to the program of extending computable structure theory to the realm of metric structures by investigating lowness for isometric isomorphism of metric structures. We show that lowness for isomorphism coincides with lowness for isometric isomorphism and with lowness for isometry of metric spaces. We also examine certain restricted notions of lowness for isometric isomorphism with respect to fixed computable presentations, and, in this vein, we obtain classifications of the degrees that are low for isometric isomorphism with respect to the standard copies of certain Lebesgue spaces.

Abstract:We show that if $M$ is a countable transitive model of ZF and if $a,b$ are reals not in $M$, then there is a $G$ generic over $M$ such that $b \in L[a,G]$. We then present several applications such as the following: if $J$ is any countable transitive model of ZFC and $M \not\subseteq J$ is another countable transitive model of ZFC of the same ordinal height $\alpha$, then there is a forcing extension $N$ of $J$ such that $M \cup N$ is not included in any transitive model of ZFC of height $\alpha$. Also, assuming $0^\#$ exists, letting $S$ be the set of reals generic over $L$, although $S$ is disjoint from the Turing cone above $0^\#$, we have that for any non-constructible real $a$, $\{ a \oplus s : s \in S \}$ is cofinal in the Turing degrees.

It is known that weakly 2-generic sets are shallow, i.e. not deep. In this paper, we show that there is a deep 1-generic set.

Generically Computable Linear Orderings

Abstract:We study notions of generic and coarse computability in the context of computable structure theory. Our notions are stratified by the $\Sigma_\beta$ hierarchy. We focus on linear orderings. We show that at the $\Sigma_1$ level all linear orderings have both generically and coarsely computable copies. This behavior changes abruptly at higher levels; we show that at the $\Sigma_{\alpha+2}$ level for any $\alpha\in\omega_1^{ck}$ the set of linear orderings with generically or coarsely computable copies is $\mathbf{\Sigma}_1^1$-complete and therefore maximally complicated. This development is new even in the general analysis of generic and coarse computability of countable structures. In the process of proving these results we introduce new tools for understanding generically and coarsely computable structures. We are able to give a purely structural statement that is equivalent to having a generically computable copy and show that every relational structure with only finitely many relations has coarsely and generically computable copies at the lowest level of the hierarchy.

Abstract:We study the generic limit sets of one-dimensional cellular automata, which intuitively capture their asymptotic dynamics while discarding transient phenomena. As our main results, we characterize the automata whose generic limit set is a singleton, and show that this class is $\Sigma^0_2$-complete. We also prove that given a CA whose generic limit set is guaranteed to be a singleton, the sole configuration it contains cannot be algorithmically determined.

On generic properties of nilpotent algebras

Abstract:We study general nilpotent algebras. The results obtained are new even for the classical algebras, such as associative or Lie algebras. We single out certain generic properties of finite-dimensional algebras, mostly over infinite fields. The notion of being generic in the class of $n$-generated algebras of an arbitrary primitive class of $c$-nilpotent algebras appears naturally in the following way. On the set of the isomorphism classes of such algebras one can introduce the structure of an algebraic variety. As a result, the subsets are endowed with the dimensions as algebraic varieties. A subset $Y$ of a set $X$ of lesser dimension can be viewed as negligible in $X$. For example, if $n\gg c$, we determine that an automorphism group of a generic algebra $P$ consists of the automorphisms, which are scalar modulo $P^2$. Generic ideals are in $I(P)$, the annihilator of $P$. In the case of classical nilpotent algebras as above, the generic algebras are graded by the degrees with respect to some generating sets.

Abstract:A set A is a base for Schnorr randomness if it is Turing reducible to a set R that is Schnorr random relative to A, and the notion of a base for weak 1‐genericity can be defined similarly. We show that A is a base for Schnorr randomness if and only if A is a base for weak 1‐genericity if and only if the halting set K is not Turing reducible to A. Furthermore, we define a set A to be high for Schnorr randomness versus Martin‐Löf randomness if and only if every set that is Schnorr random relative to A is also Martin‐Löf random unrelativized, and we show that A is high for Schnorr randomness versus Martin‐Löf randomness if and only if K is Turing reducible to A. Results concerning highness for other pairs of randomness notions are also presented.

Abstract:A fundamental issue in the $\lambda$-calculus is to find appropriate notions for meaningfulness. It is well-known that in the call-by-name $\lambda$-calculus (CbN) the meaningful terms can be identified with the solvable ones, and that this notion is not appropriate in the call-by-value $\lambda$-calculus (CbV). This paper validates the challenging claim that yet another notion, previously introduced in the literature as potential valuability, appropriately represents meaningfulness in CbV. Akin to CbN, this claim is corroborated by proving two essential properties. The first one is genericity, stating that meaningless subterms have no bearing on evaluating normalizing terms. To prove this (which was an open problem), we use a novel approach based on stratified reduction, indifferently applicable to CbN and CbV, and in a quantitative way. The second property concerns consistency of the smallest congruence relation resulting from equating all meaningless terms. While the consistency result is not new, we provide the first direct operational proof of it. We also show that such a congruence has a unique consistent and maximal extension, which coincides with a well-known notion of observational equivalence. Our results thus supply the formal concepts and tools that validate the informal notion of meaningfulness underlying CbN and CbV.

Abstract:The notion of slow entropy, both upper and lower slow entropy, was defined by Katok and Thouvenot as a more refined measure of complexity for dynamical systems, than the classical Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. For any subexponential rate function $a_n(t)$, we prove there exists a generic class of invertible measure preserving systems such that the lower slow entropy is zero and the upper slow entropy is infinite. Also, given any subexponential rate $a_n(t)$, we show there exists a rigid, weak mixing, invertible system such that the lower slow entropy is infinite with respect to $a_n(t)$. This gives a general solution to a question on the existence of rigid transformations with positive polynomial upper slow entropy, Finally, we connect slow entropy with the notion of entropy covergence rate presented by Blume. In particular, we show slow entropy is a strictly stronger notion of complexity and give examples which have zero upper slow entropy, but also have an arbitrary sublinear positive entropy convergence rate.

Abstract:We show that a generically sharply $t$-transitive permutation group of finite Morley rank on a set of rank $r$ satisfies $t\le r+2$ provided the pointwise stabilizer of a generic $(t-1)$-tuple is an $L$-group, which holds, for example, when this stabilizer is solvable or when $r\le 5$. This makes progress on the Borovik-Cherlin conjecture that every generically $(r+2)$-transitive permutation group of finite Morley rank on a set of rank $r$ is of the form $\operatorname{PGL}_{r+1}(F)$ acting naturally on $\mathbb{P}^r(F)$. Our proof is assembled from three key ingredients that are independent of the main theorem - these address actions of $\operatorname{Alt}(n)$ on $L$-groups of finite Morley rank, generically $2$-transitive actions with abelian point stabilizers, and simple groups of rank $6$.
