Abstract:Most of the research work in the theory of survey sampling only deals with the sampling errors under the assumptions: (i) there is a complete response and (ii) recorded information from individuals is correct but in practice it is not always true. Non-sampling errors like non-response and measurement errors (MEs) mostly creep into the survey and become more influential for estimators than sampling errors. Considering this practical situation of non-response and MEs jointly, we proposed an optimum class of estimators for population mean under simple random sampling using conventional and non-conventional measures. Bias and mean square error of the proposed estimators are derived up to first degree of approximation. Moreover, a simulation study is conducted to assess the performance of new estimators which proves that proposed estimators are more efficient than the traditional Hansen and Hurwitz estimator and other competing estimators.

Abstract:This paper proposes a generalized class of difference-cum-exponential-type estimators for population mean under simple random sampling without replacement through known conventional and non-conventional auxiliary information. It is observed that some well-known estimators are the members of our proposed class. Moreover, proposed class of estimators behaves efficiently than competing estimators under some simple conditions. Theoretical findings are confirmed with numerical illustration by using six real-life datasets. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation study on four real populations also approved the potential of the proposed class against competing estimators.

Abstract:Estimation of population mean is of prime concern in many studies and ratio estimators are popular choices for it. It is a common practice to use conventional measures of location to develop ratio estimators using information on auxiliary variables. In this article, we propose a class of ratio estimators for a finite population mean using information on two auxiliary variables with the help of some non-conventional location measures. We have incorporated tri-mean, Hodges-Lehmann, mid-range and decile mean of the two auxiliary variables to serve the purpose. The properties associated with the proposed class of ratio estimators are evaluated using mean square error. We have presented efficiency comparisons of the proposed class of ratio estimators with other existing estimators under the optimal conditions. An empirical study is also included for illustration and verification purposes. From theoretical and empirical study, we observed that the proposed estimators perform better as compared to the usual ratio and the existing estimators consider in this study.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved general family of ratio-type estimators using the coefficient of skewness of an auxiliary variable for estimating finite population mean under simple random sampling. Bias, mean squared error (MSE) and minimum MSE of the proposed family are derived up to the first degree of approximation. It is found that proposed family behaves better than competing estimators under some simple conditions. Theoretical findings are confirmed with numerical illustration using three natural populations. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation study on a real data set also proves the potential of the proposed family against the common unbiased estimator, traditional ratio estimator and estimators by Yan and Tian (CCIS 106:103–110, 2010).

Abstract:Sample surveys are widely used to obtain information about totals, means, medians, and other parameters of finite populations. In many applications, similar information is desired for subpopulations such as individuals in specific geographic areas and socio-demographic groups. When the surveys are conducted at national or similarly high levels, a probability sampling can result in just a few sampling units from many unplanned subpopulations at the design stage. Cost considerations may also lead to low sample sizes from individual small areas. Estimating the parameters of these subpopulations with satisfactory precision and evaluating their accuracy are serious challenges for statisticians. To overcome the difficulties, statisticians resort to pooling information across the small areas via suitable model assumptions, administrative archives, and census data. In this paper, we develop an array of small area quantile estimators. The novelty is the introduction of a semiparametric density ratio model for the error distribution in the unit-level nested error regression model. In contrast, the existing methods are usually most effective when the response values are jointly normal. We also propose a resampling procedure for estimating the mean square errors of these estimators. Simulation results indicate that the new methods have superior performance when the population distributions are skewed and remain competitive otherwise.

Abstract:Two-phase designs measure variables of interest on a subcohort where the outcome and covariates are readily available or cheap to collect on all individuals in the cohort. Given limited resource availability, it is of interest to find an optimal design that includes more informative individuals in the final sample. We explore the optimal designs and efficiencies for analysis by design-based estimators. Generalized raking is an efficient design-based estimator that improves on the inverse-probability weighted (IPW) estimator by adjusting weights based on the auxiliary information. We derive a closed-form solution of the optimal design for estimating regression coefficients from generalized raking estimators. We compare it with the optimal design for analysis via the IPW estimator and other two-phase designs in measurement-error settings. We consider general two-phase designs where the outcome variable and variables of interest can be continuous or discrete. Our results show that the optimal designs for analysis by the two design-based estimators can be very different. The optimal design for IPW estimation is optimal for analysis via the IPW estimator and typically gives near-optimal efficiency for generalized raking, though we show there is potential improvement in some settings.

Abstract:In countries where population census data are limited, generating accurate subnational estimates of health and demographic indicators is challenging. Existing model-based geostatistical methods leverage covariate information and spatial smoothing to reduce the variability of estimates but often ignore the survey design, while traditional small area estimation approaches may not incorporate both unit-level covariate information and spatial smoothing in a design consistent way. We propose a smoothed model-assisted estimator that accounts for survey design and leverages both unit-level covariates and spatial smoothing. Under certain regularity assumptions, this estimator is both design consistent and model consistent. We compare it with existing design-based and model-based estimators using real and simulated data.

Abstract:Estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs) are stochastic optimization techniques that explore the space of potential solutions by building and sampling explicit probabilistic models of promising candidate solutions. This explicit use of probablistic models in optimization offers some significant advantages over other types of metaheuristics. This paper discusses these advantages and outlines many of the different types of EDAs. In addition, some of the most powerful efficiency enhancement techniques applied to EDAs are discussed.

Abstract:The present work suggests some difference-cum-exponential ratio-type estimators to deal with the problem of estimation for population mean. The suggested estimators are based on the linear combination of two auxiliary variables under simple and stratified random sampling schemes. Expressions for the bias, mean squared error (MSE) and minimum MSE of the suggested estimators are derived up to the first degree of approximation. Different real life datasets arc used to show the superiorities in terms of percent relative efficiencies (PREs) of the new estimators. The suggested estimators are more efficient as they provide maximum gain in PREs as compared to the traditional and competing estimators under study.

Abstract:The utility of remotely sensed auxiliary data for increasing the precision of sample-based inventory estimates of population parameters is well-established. To this end, the model-assisted estimators with remotely sensed auxiliary data are particularly effective for use with continuous dependent variables. The model-assisted estimators take somewhat different forms, depending on the sampling design used to collect the data. The forms are well-documented for simple random sampling but considerably less so for variations of two-stage sampling designs. The objectives of the study were three-fold: (1) to derive the more commonly used Cochran (1977)-like notation for two-stage, model-assisted regression estimators for population means from the Särndal et al. (1992) estimators for population totals, (2) to assess the unbiasedness of the two-stage, model-assisted regression estimators of the population mean and the corresponding variance estimators of the estimate of the population mean, and (3) to compare the precision of estimates of the mean for different combinations of PSU size and first- and second-stage sample sizes. The conclusions were that the two-stage, model-assisted estimators of Särndal et al. (1992) could be much more simply expressed using the familiar Cochran notation and that neither the estimators of the mean nor the estimators of the variance of the estimate of the mean exhibited any indications of bias other than possibly for small sample sizes. For equal total sample sizes, standard errors were smaller for combinations of larger first-stage and smaller second-stage sample sizes and slightly smaller for a larger PSU size.

Abstract:Faced with massive data, subsampling is a commonly used technique to improve computational efficiency, and using nonuniform subsampling probabilities is an effective approach to improve estimation efficiency. For computational efficiency, subsampling is often implemented with replacement or through Poisson subsampling. However, no rigorous investigation has been performed to study the difference between the two subsampling procedures such as their estimation efficiency and computational convenience. This paper performs a comparative study on these two different sampling procedures. In the context of maximizing a general target function, we first derive asymptotic distributions for estimators obtained from the two sampling procedures. The results show that the Poisson subsampling may have a higher estimation efficiency. Based on the asymptotic distributions for both subsampling with replacement and Poisson subsampling, we derive optimal subsampling probabilities that minimize the variance functions of the subsampling estimators. These subsampling probabilities further reveal the similarities and differences between subsampling with replacement and Poisson subsampling. The theoretical characterizations and comparisons on the two subsampling procedures provide guidance to select a more appropriate subsampling approach in practice. Furthermore, practically implementable algorithms are proposed based on the optimal structural results, which are evaluated through both theoretical and empirical analyses.

Abstract:There are numerous studies where data on population units’ auxiliary variables and attributes are simultaneously available. Therefore, due to cost-effectiveness and ease of recording, the study variable and several linearly related auxiliary variables are recorded. These auxiliary variables are commonly observed as quantitative and qualitative (attributes) variables and are jointly used to estimate the study variable’s population mean using a mixture estimator. In order to achieve this, a family of generalized mixture estimators was proposed under simple random sampling with the aim of improving performance under symmetrical and asymmetrical distributions. In addition, the estimator’s behavior for various sample sizes was examined with regard to its convergence to the normal distribution. The suggested generalized mixture estimator’s mean square error is deduced up to the first order of approximation. It is discovered that for the normal, uniform, Weibull, and gamma distributions, the suggested estimator estimates the population mean of the study variable with greater accuracy than the competing estimators. It is also revealed that when the proposed estimator converges to normality, the sample size is at least taken as 110, 1000, and 120. Furthermore, the implementation of three real-life datasets related to the finance and health sectors is also presented to support the proposed estimator’s significance.

Abstract:A parameter estimator is proposed based on the concept of two-objective optimization, which may be much better than the best linear unbiased estimator in the case of some bad samples, such as a very small sample or an approximately multi-collinear sample. This is illustrated by certain theoretical analyses and simulation studies. A comparison of this estimator with other related ones is given to show the new features of our approach.

Abstract:<p>The main objectives of this paper are to find efficient but computationally simple estimators for the proportions of people in the labour force (economic activity rates) in Swiss communes and to estimate their mean‐squared error (MSE) over the sampling replication mechanism (the design MSE). This will be done by combining survey data with administrative data provided by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. We find estimators with considerably greater efficiency than currently used direct estimators and that are easy to implement. We show that, under a generalized linear mixed model with logit link, the computationally expensive empirical best predictor does not perform appreciably better than a plug‐in estimator. Moreover, for moderate proportions of active workers, the empirical best linear unbiased predictor (EBLUP) based on a much simpler linear mixed model performs similarly to the above estimators. We propose new bootstrap estimators of the design MSE of the EBLUPs, which 'borrow strength' similarly to EBLUPs. Realistic simulation studies carried out under both model‐ and design‐based set‐ups indicate great gains in efficiency of the selected small area estimators over the traditional direct estimators and acceptable performance of the proposed bootstrap MSE estimators. In the application using the Swiss data, coefficient‐of‐variation reductions of the estimates obtained for the communes are remarkable.</p>

Doubly Robust Inference with Non-probability Survey Samples

Abstract:We establish a general framework for statistical inferences with non-probability survey samples when relevant auxiliary information is available from a probability survey sample. We develop a rigorous procedure for estimating the propensity scores for units in the non-probability sample, and construct doubly robust estimators for the finite population mean. Variance estimation is discussed under the proposed framework. Results from simulation studies show the robustness and the efficiency of our proposed estimators as compared to existing methods. The proposed method is used to analyze a non-probability survey sample collected by the Pew Research Center with auxiliary information from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the Current Population Survey. Our results illustrate a general approach to inference with non-probability samples and highlight the importance and usefulness of auxiliary information from probability survey samples.

Abstract:The use of extreme values of the auxiliary variable is sometimes more beneficial to get the high efficiency of the estimators, and the study variable can have a correlation with the rank of the decently correlated auxiliary variable. As a result, it can be regarded as additional data for the study variable that can be used to improve the estimators’ efficiency. When the knowledge of the minimum and maximum values, as well as the rankings of the auxiliary variable, is known, various better estimators for calculating the finite population mean of the research variable based on extreme values under simple random sampling are proposed in this paper. The suggested estimators’ bias and mean squared error expressions are derived using first-order approximation. The recommended estimators have been compared mathematically to the current estimators. The suggested estimators are more exact in terms of relative efficiency than the other estimators addressed here, as shown by simulation and real datasets used to demonstrate the estimation of a limited population mean based on extreme values.
Simple estimators for network sampling

Methodology

Abstract:A new estimation method is presented for network sampling designs, including Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) and Snowball (SB) sampling. These types of link-tracing designs are essential for studies of hidden populations, such as people at risk for HIV. The simple idea behind the new method is to run a fast-sampling process on the sample network data to estimate the inclusion probabilities of the actual survey, and incorporate those in unequal probability estimators of population means and proportions. Improved versions of the usual RDS and SB designs are also proposed, termed RDS+ and SB+, to obtain information on more of the within-sample links. In simulations using the network from the Colorado Springs study on the heterosexual spread of HIV, the new estimators produce in most cases lower bias and lower mean square than current methods. For the variables having the largest mean square errors with current estimators, the improvement with the new estimator is dramatic. The estimates are improved even more with the enhanced design versions. For estimating the population mean degree, the efficiency gains using he new method are 29 for RDS, 54 for RDS+, 26 for SB and 80 for SB+. This means for example, with the ordinary RDS design, the mean square error with the new estimator, same data, is 1/29 that of currently used estimators. The new method is computationally intricate but is fast and scales up well. The new estimation method can be used to re-analyze existing network survey data. For new network sampling studies, it is recommended to use the improved designs as well as the new estimators.
