Abstract:We consider the Schrödinger equation $ih\partial_t\psi = H\psi$, $\psi=\psi(\cdot,t)\in L^2({\mathbb T})$. The operator $H = -\partial^2_x + V(x,t)$ includes smooth potential $V$, which is assumed to be time $T$-periodic. Let $W=W(t)$ be the fundamental solution of this linear ODE system on $L^2({\mathbb T})$. Then according to terminology from Lyapunov-Floquet theory, ${\cal M}=W(T)$ is the monodromy operator. We prove that ${\cal M}$ is unitarily conjugated to $\exp\big(-\frac{T}{ih} \partial^2_x\big) + {\cal C}$, where ${\cal C}$ is a compact operator with an arbitrarily small norm.

Geometric Floquet theory

Abstract:We derive Floquet theory from quantum geometry. We identify quasienergy folding as a consequence of a broken gauge group of the adiabatic gauge potential $U(1){\mapsto}\mathbb{Z}$. This allows us to introduce a unique gauge-invariant formulation, decomposing the dynamics into a purely geometric and a purely dynamical evolution. The dynamical Kato operator provides an unambiguous sorting of the quasienergy spectrum, identifying a unique Floquet ground state and suggesting a way to define the filling of Floquet-Bloch bands. We exemplify the features of geometric Floquet theory using an exactly solvable XY model and a non-integrable kicked Ising chain; we show that the geometric contribution to the evolution accounts for inherently nonequilibrium effects, like the $\pi$-quasienergy gap in discrete time crystals or edge modes in anomalous Floquet topological insulators. The spectrum of the Kato operator elucidates the origin of both heating and spatiotemporal symmetry-breaking transitions. Last, we demonstrate that the periodic lab frame Hamiltonian generates transitionless counterdiabatic driving for Floquet eigenstates; this enables the direct application of shortcuts-to-adiabaticity techniques to Floquet engineering, turning it into an explicit algorithmic procedure. This work directly bridges seemingly unrelated areas of nonequilibrium physics.

Abstract:The Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation has shaped our understanding on molecular dynamics microscopically in many physical and chemical systems. However, there are many cases that we must go beyond the BO approximation, particularly when strong light-matter interactions are considered. Floquet theory offers a powerful tool to treat time-periodic quantum systems. In this overview, we briefly review recent developments on Floquet nonadiabatic dynamics, with a special focus on open quantum systems. We first present the general Floquet Liouville von-Neumann (LvN) equation. We then show how to connect Floquet operators to real time observables. We proceed to outline the derivation of the Floquet quantum master equation in treating the dynamics under periodic driving in open quantum systems. We further present the Floquet mixed quantum classical Liouville equation (QCLE) to deal with coupled electron-nuclear dynamics. Finally, we embed FQCLE into a classical master equation (CME) to deal with Floquet nonadiabatic dynamics in open quantum systems. The formulations are general platforms for developing trajectory based dynamical approaches. As an example, we show how Floquet QCLE and Floquet CME can be implemented into a Langevin dynamics with Lorentz force and surface hopping algorithms.

Abstract:A primer on the Floquet theory of periodically time-dependent quantum systems is provided, and it is shown how to apply this framework for computing the quasienergy band structure governing the dynamics of ultracold atoms in driven optical cosine lattices. Such systems are viewed here as spatially and temporally periodic structures living in an extended Hilbert space, giving rise to spatio-temporal Bloch waves whose dispersion relations can be manipulated at will by exploiting ac-Stark shifts and multiphoton resonances. The elements required for numerical calculations are introduced in a tutorial manner, and some example calculations are discussed in detail, thereby illustrating future prospects of Floquet engineering.

Abstract:We study an integrable Floquet quantum system related to lattice statistical systems in the universality class of dense polymers. These systems are described by a particular non-unitary representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. We find a simple Lie algebra structure for the elements of Temperley-Lieb algebra which are invariant under shift by two lattice sites, and show how the local Floquet conserved charges and the Floquet Hamiltonian are expressed in terms of this algebra. The system has a phase transition between local and non-local phases of the Floquet Hamiltonian. We provide a strong indication that in the scaling limit this non-equilibrium system is described by the logarithmic conformal field theory.

Abstract:By directly using the probability formulas of quantum trajectories, we construct an auxiliary open quantum system for a periodically driven open quantum system whose dynamics is governed by the Floquet quantum master equation. This auxiliary system can generate a quantum trajectory ensemble that is consistent with the canonical quantum trajectory ensemble. We find that, at a long time limit, though the Lindblad operators are modified, the coherent dynamics of the auxiliary system is the same as that of the original system. A periodically driven two-level quantum system is used to illustrate this construction.

Abstract:Using the Madelung transformation on a generalized scalar Gross-Pitaevski equation, a nonlinear continuum fluid equations are derived for a classical fluid. A unitary quantum lattice algorithm is then determined as a second order discrete representation of this Gross-Pitaevski equation and the simulations are compared to those using classical fluid dynamic techniques.

Abstract:Quantum systems can be dynamically controlled using time-periodic external fields, leading to the concept of Floquet engineering, with promising technological applications. Computing Floquet energy spectra is harder than only computing ground state properties or single time-dependent trajectories, and scales exponentially with the Hilbert space dimension. Especially for strongly correlated systems in the low frequency limit, classical approaches based on truncation break down. Here, we present two quantum algorithms to determine effective Floquet modes and energy spectra. We combine the defining properties of Floquet modes in time and frequency domains with the expressiveness of parametrized quantum circuits to overcome the limitations of classical approaches. We benchmark our algorithms and provide an analysis of the key properties relevant for near-term quantum hardware.

Abstract:Floquet engineering consists in the modification of physical systems by the application of periodic time-dependent perturbations. The search for the shape of the periodic perturbation that best modifies the properties of a system in order to achieve some predefined metastable target behavior can be formulated as an optimal control problem. We discuss several ways to formulate and solve this problem. We present, as examples, some applications in the context of material science, although the methods discussed here are valid for any quantum system (from molecules and nanostructures to extended periodic and non periodic quantum materials). In particular, we show how one can achieve the manipulation of the Floquet pseudo-bandstructure of a transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer (MoS 2 ).

Abstract:Floquet insulators are periodically driven quantum systems that can host novel topological phases as a function of the drive parameters. These new phases exhibit features reminiscent of fermion doubling in discrete-time lattice fermion theories. We make this suggestion concrete by mapping the spectrum of a noninteracting (1+1)D Floquet insulator for certain drive parameters onto that of a discrete-time lattice fermion theory with a time-independent Hamiltonian. The resulting Hamiltonian is distinct from the Floquet Hamiltonian that generates stroboscopic dynamics. It can take the form of a discrete-time Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with half the number of spatial sites of the original model, or of a (1+1)D Wilson-Dirac theory with one quarter of the spatial sites. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.136601 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:A general algebraic method of quantum corrections evaluation is presented. Quantum corrections to a few classical solutions (kinks and periodic) of Ginzburg-Landau (phi-in-quadro) and Sin-Gordon models are calculated in arbitrary dimensions. The Green function for heat equation with a soliton potential is constructed by means of Laplace transformation theory and Hermit equation for the Green function transform. The generalized zeta-function is used to evaluate the functional integral and quantum corrections to mass in quasiclassical approximation.

Abstract:We investigate the simulation of fermionic systems on a quantum computer. We show in detail how quantum computers avoid the dynamical sign problem present in classical simulations of these systems, therefore reducing a problem believed to be of exponential complexity into one of polynomial complexity. The key to our demonstration is the spin-particle connection (or generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation) that allows exact algebraic invertible mappings of operators with different statistical properties. We give an explicit implementation of a simple problem using a quantum computer based on standard qubits.

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of a non-equilibrium "Floquet Fermi Liquid" state arising in partially filled Floquet Bloch bands weakly coupled to ideal fermionic baths, which possess a collection of "Floquet Fermi surfaces" enclosed inside each other, resembling matryoshka dolls. We elucidate several properties of these states, including their quantum oscillations under magnetic fields which feature slow beating patterns of their amplitude reflecting the different areas of the Floquet Fermi surfaces, consistent with those observed in microwave induced resistance oscillation experiments. We also investigate their specific heat and thermodynamic density of states and demonstrate how by controlling properties of the drive, such as its frequency, one can tune some of the Floquet Fermi surfaces towards non-equilibrium van-Hove singularities without changing the electron density.

The Ultra-critical Floquet Non-Fermi Liquid

Abstract:We demonstrate that periodically driven Fermions coupled to simple bosonic baths have steady state occupations of Floquet Bloch bands that generically display non-analyticties at certain momenta which resemble the Fermi surfaces of equilibrium non-Fermi liquids. Remarkably these non-equilibrium Fermi surfaces remain sharp even when the bath is at finite temperature, leading to critical power-law decaying correlations at finite temperature, a phenomenon with no analogue in equilibrium. We also show that generically there is in-gap current rectification for clean metals lacking inversion symmetry, and explain why this occurs universally regardless of the details of collisions.

Abstract:We establish a formal bridge between qubit-based and photonic quantum computing. We do this by defining a functor from the ZX calculus to linear optical circuits. In the process we provide a compositional theory of quantum linear optics which allows to reason about events involving multiple photons such as those required to perform linear-optical and fusion-based quantum computing.

Abstract:We explore the notion of the quantum auxiliary linear problem and the associated problem of quantum Backlund transformations (BT). In this context we systematically construct the analogue of the classical formula that provides the whole hierarchy of the time components of Lax pairs at the quantum level for both closed and open integrable lattice models. The generic time evolution operator formula is particularly interesting and novel at the quantum level when dealing with systems with open boundary conditions. In the same frame we show that the reflection K-matrix can also be viewed as a particular type of BT, fixed at the boundaries of the system. The q-oscillator (q-boson) model, a variant of the Ablowitz-Ladik model, is then employed as a paradigm to illustrate the method. Particular emphasis is given to the time part of the quantum BT as possible connections and applications to the problem of quantum quenches as well as the time evolution of local quantum impurities are evident. A discussion on the use of Bethe states as well as coherent states and the path integral formulation for the study of the time evolution is also presented.

Abstract:Implementation of high-fidelity gate operations on integrated-qubit systems is vital for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Qubit-frequency allocation is an essential part of improving control fidelity. A metric for qubit-frequency allocation, frequency collision, has been proposed on simple systems of only a few qubits driven by a monomodal microwave drive. However, frequency allocation for quantum processors for more advanced purposes, such as quantum error correction, needs further investigation. In this study, we propose a Floquet analysis of frequency collisions. The key to our proposed method is a reinterpretation of frequency collisions as an unintended degeneracy of Floquet states, which allows a collision analysis on more complex systems with many qubits driven by multimodal microwave drives. Although the Floquet state is defined in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, we develop algorithms, based on operation perturbation theory, to truncate the Hilbert space down to the optimal computational complexity. In particular, we show that the computational complexity of the collision analysis for a sparse qubit lattice is linear with the number of qubits. Finally, we demonstrate our proposed method on cross-resonance-based experimental protocols. We first study the cross-resonance gate in an isolated three-qubit system, where the effectiveness of our method is verified by comparing it with previous studies. We next consider the more complex problem of syndrome extraction in the heavy-hexagon code [Christopher et al., Phys. Rev. X 10 , 011022 (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevX.10.011022]. Abstract:We discuss the viability of ensemble simulations of fluid flows on quantum computers. The basic idea is to formulate a functional Liouville equation for the probability distribution of the flow field configuration and recognize that, due to its linearity, such an equation is in principle more amenable to quantum computing than the equations of fluid motion. After suitable marginalization and associated closure, the Liouville approach is shown to require several hundreds of logical qubits, hence calling for a major thrust in current noise correction and mitigation techniques.

Abstract:We present a fluctuation theorem for Floquet quantum master equations. This is a detailed version of the famous Gallavotti-Cohen theorem. In contrast to the latter theorem, which involves the probability distribution of the total heat current, the former involves the joint probability distribution of positive and negative heat currents and can be used to derive the latter. A quantum two-level system driven by a periodic external field is used to verify this result.

Abstract:We study simultaneous symmetry-breaking in a spontaneous Floquet state, focusing on the specific case of an atomic condensate. We first describe the quantization of the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes for a stationary state simultaneously breaking several symmetries of the Hamiltonian by invoking the generalized Gibbs ensemble, which enables a thermodynamical description of the problem. The quantization procedure involves a Berry-Gibbs connection, which depends on the macroscopic conserved charges associated to each broken symmetry and whose curvature is not invariant under generalized gauge transformations. We extend the formalism to Floquet states simultaneously breaking several symmetries, where Goldstone theorem translates into the emergence of Floquet-Nambu-Goldstone (FNG) modes with zero quasi-energy. In the case of a spontaneous Floquet state, there is a genuine temporal FNG mode arising from the continuous time-translation symmetry breaking, whose quantum amplitude provides a rare realization of a time operator in Quantum Mechanics. Furthermore, since they conserve energy, spontaneous Floquet states can be shown to possess a conserved Floquet charge. Conventional Floquet systems also admit a thermodynamic description in terms of the Floquet enthalpy, the Legendre transform of the energy with respect to the Floquet charge. We apply our formalism to a particular realization of spontaneous Floquet state, the CES state, which breaks $U(1)$ and time-translation symmetries, representing a time supersolid. Using the Truncated Wigner method, we numerically compute its quantum fluctuations, which are theoretically predicted to be dominated by the temporal FNG mode at long times, observing a remarkable agreement between simulation and theory. Based on these results, we propose a feasible experimental scheme to observe the temporal FNG mode of the CES state.
