Abstract:Determining subduction‐related processes is crucial for understanding lithological heterogeneity, as substantial quantities of slabs are recycled into the mantle. Molybdenum isotopes are valuable for distinguishing sources materials due to the significant isotope differences between the crust and the mantle. In this study, we systematically investigate Mo isotopes in a suite of well‐characterized continental basalts from Keluo and Halaha‐Chaoer, located in Northeast China. The δ98Mo values of Keluo range from −0.41 to −0.23‰, with an average of −0.34‰, while Halaha‐Chaoer samples ranged from −0.18 to −0.12‰, with an average of −0.15‰. The δ98Mo values of Keluo basalts are lighter than the mean value of fresh oceanic basalts (−0.21‰), whereas those of Halaha‐Chaoer basalts are similar to oceanic basalts. Combined with other geochemical indications (LOI, Ce/Pb, La/Yb and so on), the Mo isotopic variations cannot be attributed to chemical weathering, continental crust contamination or magmatic processes. Instead, the δ98Mo variations in this study are explained by the incorporation of different oceanic crustal materials into the magma sources. Correlations of δ98Mo with Ba/Th, Th/U, 143Nd/144Nd indicated that both sediment and altered oceanic crust have significantly influenced these variations. This study demonstrates the potential of Mo isotopes to distinguish different types of recycled oceanic crust materials.
Recycling of Marine Carbonate Induced Calcium Isotope Heterogeneity of Arc Magmas in Subduction Zones

Abstract:Calcium (Ca) is an essential element constituting sedimentary carbonate in subducting sediments. Ca isotopic characteristics of subduction-related rocks could provide insight into the behavior and budget of carbonate and carbon cycles in subduction zones, due to the distinctive δ44/40Ca ranges of sedimentary carbonate with respect to the mantle. Here, we studied the Ca isotopic compositions of arc magmas from the Northern Luzon arc (NLA), which are evolved from a depleted mantle metasomatized by slab-derived fluids and sediment melts. The δ44/40Ca values range from 0.76 ± 0.04‰ to 1.01 ± 0.03‰ and cover the typical ranges for bulk silica earth (BSE, ~ 0.94‰) and fresh mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB, ~ 0.83‰). The Ca isotopes of NLA volcanics are not dominantly determined by the effects of mantle partial melting or fractional crystallization, nor significantly modified by secondary alteration. Instead, the δ44/40Ca values of NLA volcanics are controlled by the subduction-related metasomatism. The metasomatism by slab-derived fluids (mainly expelled from altered oceanic crust, AOC) dramatically elevated the contents of fluid-mobile elements (e.g., Ba and Pb) with respect to fluid-immobile elements (e.g., Ce). This process, however, rarely modified the Ca isotopes, possibly ascribed to the δ44/40Ca similarity between AOC and the depleted mantle. The δ44/40Ca values significantly correlated with subduction indicators (e.g., Sr-Nd isotopes, Ba/Nb, Ce/Pb, and Nb/La), demonstrating the Ca isotopes of NLA volcanics are mainly controlled by the metasomatism of sediment melts subducting from the South China Sea (SCS). Based on the thermal structures and chemical compositions of sediments subducting into global trenches, we propose that carbonate Ca isotopic signals can only be observed in the arcs with high sedimentary Ca fluxes and temperature-pressure conditions well beyond the solidus of H2O-saturated sediment melting, e.g., NLA, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, South Chile, North Vanuatu, New Zealand, and Kermadec. The absence of such signals in other arcs suggests either limited sedimentary fluxes or much of the subducting sedimentary carbonate has been survived during plate subduction to enter the deep mantle.
Recycling of eroded crust by mélange diapirs evidenced from the Early Cretaceous arc magmatism in southern Tibet

Abstract:Crustal material recycling in a subduction factory increases the diversity and complexity of arc magma. However, the exact origin and mechanism of its contribution to arc magma are not fully understood. Here, we present new data on the Molang basaltic rocks from the southern Lhasa terrane to gain an in-depth-understanding of the mechanisms of crustal recycling. The zircon UPb ages indicate that these rocks were emplaced at 128 Ma. They display characteristics ranging from forearc basalts to tholeiitic arc basalts with depleted mantle isotope compositions (ε Nd ( t ) = +4.58 to +4.86) and zircon ɛ Hf ( t ) values (+7.3 to +8.7). The uniform isotopic composition (SrNd) and fractionation of trace elements show that crustal materials could have been added to the magma source in the form of bulk sediment. Therefore, we have proposed an argument supporting the mélange diapirs model. The age spectra of the inherited zircons are consistent with those of the detrital zircons from the subduction hanging wall. This implies that the inherited zircons may be unmolten residues of eroded forearc crust that survived erosion and subduction from the slab in well-mixed mélange diapirs that passed through a comparatively hot mantle wedge and occur as key evidence for crustal recycling in the arc magma. Based on a synthesis of earlier research, we suggest that the Molang basaltic rocks were derived from the partial melting of the mélange diapirs in a steep subduction setting during a new subduction initiation event involving the Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab.

Abstract:Alkaline rocks crop out in subduction‐related volcanic arcs globally, whose genesis is explained by partial melting of hybrid diapiric mélanges in the mantle wedge. Such a new model has not yet been evidenced by field‐based investigations, where mélanges and alkaline arc rocks have spatial‐temporal and genetic connections. In this study, we identified these two types of rock units exposed in Western Tianshan, and established their petrogenetic relationship through field, geochronologic, geochemical and thermodynamic investigations. Our results suggest that partial melts produced by melting of the mélange matrix at pressures of 2.8–2.4 GPa and 1.8–1.4 GPa with temperatures of 1000–1200 °C can replicate the major‐element contents and trace‐element abundances of the regional alkaline arc rocks. This finding not only supports the hypothesis that diapir melting of subducted mélanges has a capacity to generate alkaline arc magma, but also provides insight into material recycling at subduction zone settings.

Deciphering Contribution of Recycled Altered Oceanic Crust to Arc Magmas Using Ba‐Sr‐Nd Isotopes

Abstract:Abstract Altered oceanic crust (AOC) plays a critical role in geochemical recycling in subduction zones. However, identifying contributions of subducted AOC to arc magmas remains a conundrum due to the lack of effective tracers. Here, we investigate the Ba‐Sr‐Nd isotopic compositions of lavas from the Mariana arc and back‐arc. Based on a statistical analysis of the Sr‐Nd isotopes for global arc volcanoes, we confirm that AOC‐derived fluid (or hydrous melt), rather than sediment‐derived melt or fluid, is responsible for the Sr‐Nd isotope decoupling (i.e., 87 Sr/ 86 Sr is “excessively” enriched relative to 143 Nd/ 144 Nd when compared to the “normal” mantle derivates) observed in island arc lavas. We show that the arc lavas with increasingly decoupled Sr‐Nd isotopes generally have heavier Ba isotope ratios, which is also a characteristic feature of AOC‐derived fluids. Thus, these results establish an intimate link between subducted AOC, heavy Ba isotope compositions, and Sr‐Nd isotope decoupling signature in island arcs, which provides a powerful tool to trace the AOC recycling in subduction zones. Furthermore, a similar correlation is observed between Sr‐Nd isotope decoupling and heavy B isotope ratios for global arc lavas, implying that the recycling of AOC component is generally linked to serpentinite dehydration in subduction zones.

Distinct contribution of aqueous solutions and hydrous melts to the mantle sources: Geochemical evidence from Late Paleozoic igneous rocks in Southwestern Tianshan, Western China

Abstract:Addition of slab fluids, including slab aqueous solutions and sediment hydrous melts, into the mantle plays a key role in the generation of arc igneous rocks above subduction zones. Thus, identification of the nature and origin of slab fluids is a topic of great importance. Here, we carried out an integrated study on three types of Late Paleozoic arc igneous rocks from Southwestern Tianshan in Western China to distinguish slab aqueous solutions from sediment melts in generating arc magmatism. Zircon UPb dating yields ages of 325–324 Ma for southern Xinyuan (SXY) diabases, 313 Ma for Duku Road basalts (DKR) and 307 Ma for northern Zhaosu (NZS) diabases, respectively. These igneous rocks all exhibit typical arc-like trace element distribution patterns, but show a series of differences in trace elements, radiogenic isotopes and other geochemical variations. Generally, the DKR and NZS rocks are characterized by the enrichment in fluid-mobile elements such as Ba, K, Pb and Sr, depletion in whole-rock Sr-Nd-Hf and zircon Hf isotopes. By contrast, the SXY rocks exhibit the enrichment in melt-mobile elements such as LILE, LREE and Th, relatively high δ 18 O values and enriched whole-rock Sr–Nd–Hf and zircon Hf isotopes. What's more, the DKR and NZS rocks show remarkably higher Ba/Th, Pb/Ce, Sr/Nd and Ba/La ratios than those of normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), while SXY rocks are characterized by higher Th/La, Th/Nd and Th/Yb ratios relative to those of normal MORB, similar to seafloor sediments. These geochemical differences can be explained by the metasomatism of mantle wedge peridotites by two distinct properties of liquid phase released from subducting South Tianshan oceanic slab, in which the subducting slab-derived aqueous solution metasomatism is required for the generation of the DKR and NZS igneous rocks, while the sediments-derived hydrous melt metasomatism is required for the generation of the SXY rocks. This qualitative identification is further affirmed by quantitative model calculations of trace elements and SrNd isotopes of the studied igneous rocks. Therefore, our study provides the geochemical evidence for chemical metasomatism of the mantle wedge peridotite by incorporation of two properties of metasomatic agents in oceanic subduction channel.

Abstract:Crustal recycling at convergent plate boundaries is essential to mantle heterogeneity.However,crustal signatures in the mantle source of basaltic rocks above subduction zones were primarily incorporated in the form of liquid rather than solid phases.The physicochemical property of liquid phases is determined by the dehydration behavior of crustal rocks at the slab-mantle interface in subduction channels.Because of the significant fractionation in incompatible trace elements but the full inheritance in radiogenic isotopes relative to their crustal sources,the production of liquid phases is crucial to the geochemical transfer from the subducting crust into the mantle.In this process,the stability of specific minerals in subducting crustal rocks exerts a primary control on the enrichment of given trace elements in the liquid phases.For this reason,geochemically enriched oceanic basalts can be categorized into two types in terms of their trace element distribution patterns in the primitive mantle-normalized diagram.One is island arc basalts（IAB）,showing enrichment in LILE,Pb and LREE but depletion in HFSE such as Nb and Ta relative to HREE,The other is ocean island basalts（OIB）,exhibiting enrichment in LILE and LREE,enrichment or non-depletion in HFSE but depletion in Pb relative to HREE.In either types,these basalts show the enhanced enrichment of LILE and LREE with increasing their incompatibility relative to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts（MORB）.The thermal regime of subduction zones can be categorized into two stages in both time and space,The first stage is characterized by compressional tectonism at low thermal gradients.As a consequence,metamorphic dehydration of the subducting crust prevails at forearc to subarc depths due to the breakdown of hydrous minerals such as mica and amphibole in the stability field of garnet and rutile,resulting in the liberation of aqueous solutions with the trace element composition that is considerably enriched in LILE,Pb and LREE but depleted in HFSE and HREE relative to normal MORB.This provides the crustal signature for the mantle sources of IAB.The second stage is indicated by extensional tectonism at high thermal gradients,leading to the partial melting of metamorphically dehydrated crustal rocks at subarc to postarc depths.This involves not only the breakdown of hydrous minerals such as amphibole,phengite and allanite in the stability field of garnet but also the dissolution of rutile into hydrous melts.As such,the hydrous melts can acquire the trace element composition that is significantly enriched in LILE,HFSE and LREE but depleted in Pb and HREE relative to normal MORB,providing the crustal signature for the mantle sources of OIB.In either case,these liquid phases would metasomatize the overlying mantle wedge peridotite at different depths,generating ultramafic metasomatites such as serpentinized and chloritized peridotites,and olivine-poor pyroxenites and hornblendites.As a consequence,the crustal signatures are transferred by the liquid phases from the subducting slab into the mantle.
Fe–Mg Isotopes Trace the Mechanism of Crustal Recycling and Arc Magmatic Processes in the Neo‐Tethys Subduction Zone

Abstract:The mechanism of crustal recycling in subduction zones has been a heated debate, and Mg–Fe isotopes may provide new constraints for this debate. This study reported the Fe–Mg isotope data for mafic plutonic rocks from the eastern and central Gangdese arc and their associated trench sediments in southern Tibet. The δ26Mg (–0.32 to –0.20‰) and δ56Fe (0.04 to 0.12‰) values of the eastern Gangdese arc rocks show negative and positive correlations with (87Sr/86Sr)i and (206Pb/204Pb)i values, but positive and negative correlations with εNd(t) and εHf(t) values, respectively. The Mg and Fe isotopic compositions (δ26Mg = –0.28 to –0.15‰; δ56Fe = 0.02 to 0.12‰) of the central Gangdese arc rocks are comparable with the eastern ones, but they are not covariant with Sr–Pb–Nd–Hf isotopes. More importantly, the Fe–Mg isotopes for most of the arc rocks fall in between local trench sediments (δ26Mg = –0.61 to –0.30‰; δ56Fe = 0.00 to 0.17‰) and the normal mantle. Integrated qualitative analyses and quantitative simulations suggest that while the Mg–Fe isotope variations in the eastern Gangdese arc rocks revealed the important role of source mixing between sediment-derived melts and peridotite, their variations in the central Gangdese arc rocks reflected the controlling effects of source mixing between carbonated serpentinite-derived Mg-rich fluid and peridotite and source melting. The good covariant relationships between Mg–Fe isotope and traditional geochemical tracers provide further evidence for the recycling of crustal materials in subduction zones via various types of slab-derived fluids and melts.

Abstract:Isotopic and elemental signatures in arc magmas bear similarities to marine sediments from the forearc. Partial melts of subducted sediments were previously invoked as the predominant carrier of material between the slab and mantle wedge, whereas aqueous fluids were deemed too inefficient at mobilizing trace elements to account for arc magma compositions. However, trace element solubility in aqueous fluids may be significantly affected by the formation of chloride complexes. We introduced NaCl into the sediment‐H2O system, and re‐investigated trace element partitioning between aqueous fluids and metasediments in a series of piston cylinder experiments at 2.5–4.5 GPa and 600–700°C. The diamond trap method was employed to separate the fluids, which were analyzed in the frozen state. Trace element compositions of fluids and all solid phases were obtained by LA‐ICP‐MS. We combined our data with published literature to demonstrate that saline fluids and sediment melts have a comparable efficiency in extracting incompatible elements from subducted sediments, producing similar element fractionation during mobile phase expulsion. Accessory phases such as allanite may only be stable in particularly Rare Earth Elements‐enriched lithologies. The Sr, Pb and Nd isotopic signatures of arc magma suggest that the mantle wedge is infiltrated by mobile phases derived from both the sediment and basalt sections of the subducted oceanic crust. Up to several percent of either sediment‐derived saline fluid or melt can account for the isotopic and elemental compositions of most arc magma. Geochemical similarities between arc magma and forearc sediments are not necessarily evidence of slab melting.

Abstract:In subduction zones, materials on Earth’s surface can be transported to the deep crust or mantle, but the exact mechanisms and the nature of the recycled materials are not fully understood. Here, we report a set of migmatites from western Yangtze Block, China. These migmatites have similar bulk compositions as forearc sediments. Zircon age distributions and Hf–O isotopes indicate that the precursors of the sediments were predominantly derived from juvenile arc crust itself. Using phase equilibria modeling, we show that the sediments experienced high temperature-to-pressure ratio metamorphism and were most likely transported to deep arc crust by intracrustal thrust faults. By dating the magmatic zircon cores and overgrowth rims, we find that the entire rock cycle, from arc magmatism, to weathering at the surface, then to burial and remelting in the deep crust, took place within ~10 Myr. Our findings highlight thrust faults as an efficient recycling channel in compressional arcs and endogenic recycling as an important mechanism driving internal redistribution and differentiation of arc crust.

Abstract:Processing of the oceanic lithosphere in subduction zones gives rise to arc magmatism, and strong compositional links exist between trench input and arc output. Here we address the question whether these compositional links are sufficiently strong to allow for ‘tracing’ the composition of the sedimentary and igneous oceanic crust through the chemistry of arcs. The tracing approach hinges critically on whether key characteristics of the subducted slab are transmitted to arcs. Results from forward and inverse modeling, verified by observations from modern arc settings, demonstrate that elements Sr, Pb, Nd and Hf that are associated with radiogenic isotopes may preserve chemical characteristics of the subducted slab in arc magmas. The data indicate that the much thicker igneous subducted crust dominates the recycled flux to arcs. The flux from the highly enriched, but thin sediment layer is buffered, and may be even concealed, by the concomitant contributions from igneous crust, and/or subarc mantle, despite the much better visibility of sediment components in trace element and isotope space. Arc Pb and Pb isotopes are the most promising tracers that may capture the isotopic diversity of subducted MORB-type and OIB-type crust with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution. While arc Sr is also strongly controlled by the flux from the subducted crust, arc data may allow for distinguishing among radiogenic Sr recycled from altered oceanic crust or from subducted sediment in moderately radiogenic arcs (87Sr/86Sr<~0.7045). Co-mingling of Nd and Hf from igneous subducted crust with mantle contributions mostly hinders the isotopic identification of subducted crust through arc chemistry. However, Nd and Hf may provide complementary information about the efficiency of recycling, and recycling via subduction erosion.The tracing approach appears feasible in Cenozoic arcs where much of the original subduction context is preserved. First results from the Izu Bonin and Central American arcs show that plate tectonic events like oceanic plate formation and destruction, subduction of hotspot tracks and the closure of oceanic gateways are recorded in the chemistry of arcs. A comparative evaluation of Cenozoic global arcs may hence significantly complement the information from the modern oceanic basins, help to obtain a more complete image of the oceanic crustal composition and implicate the geochemical processes by which it formed. Possibly, the tracing approach may also be useful in ancient, inactive arcs to obtain information on the composition of oceanic crust subducted in the geological past.

Abstract:The recycling of continental crust via trench sediment subduction and subduction erosion is well established in modern oceanic subduction zones, and this is fundamental to subduction zone magmatism and mantle heterogeneity. Although a similar process likely took place in ancient oceanic subduction zones, its evaluation is difficult because most geological records were erased by subsequent continental collision and post-collisional reworking processes. To address this issue, a comprehensive geochemical study was conducted for Mesozoic mafic to intermediate plutonic rocks and surviving contemporaneous paleo-trench sediments from the Himalayan orogen in southern Tibet. These plutonic rocks show variably enriched Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope compositions with εNd(t) values varying from −5.6 to +4.7, which are neither positively nor negatively correlated with Mg# values. This indicates that they were not affected by crustal contamination but rather inherited from heterogeneous magma sources. There are consistently continuous variations in the Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope space among the paleo-trench sediments, the arc plutonic rocks, and mafic igneous rocks from the Yarlung Tsangpo ophiolite suites, indicating that the binary mixing between the paleo-trench sediment-derived melts and the ambient mantle dictated the radiogenic isotope compositions of the arc igneous rocks. These qualitive interpretations are further verified by quantitative geochemical examination of the compositional links in Nd and Hf isotopes between the paleo-trench sediments and arc rocks. As a consequence, the present study has for the first time identified and systematically demonstrated the key role of paleo-trench sediments in constraining continental crust recycling as well as the origin and compositional heterogeneity of arc igneous rocks above ancient oceanic subduction zones.

Abstract:It is generally accepted that metasomatism of the mantle wedge peridotite by subducting slab-derived fluids plays a key role in dictating the composition of mafic arc magmas. However, this fluid metasomatism model has been challenged recently by the mélange diapirism model. In order to distinguish between liquid and solid phases that would exclusively contribute to mafic arc magmas, we have carried out an integrated study of whole-rock and mineral geochemistry for two types of contemporaneous mafic igneous rocks (gabbroic diorites and diorite dikes) from an accretionary orogen. The results indicate primary contributions from liquid phases composed of not only slab-derived aqueous solution but also seafloor sediment-derived hydrous melt. Although these mafic rocks all exhibit typical arc-like trace element distribution patterns, they show a series of differences in stable Li and radiogenic Sr–Nd–Hf isotope compositions as well as other geochemical variables. In general, the gabbroic diorites are characterized by enrichment in fluid-mobile elements (e.g., Rb, Ba, K, Pb, and Sr), high δ7Li and δ18O values, and depletion in Sr–Nd–Hf isotope compositions. By contrast, the diorite dikes exhibit enrichment in melt-mobile elements (e.g., LILE, LREE and Th), relatively low δ7Li values, and slight enrichment in Sr–Nd–Hf isotope compositions. There are also systematic differences and pertinent variations between Li isotope compositions and slab-derived fluid indicators such as whole-rock Rb/Nd, Sr/Nd, Nb/U, Th/La, Th/Nd and Th/Yb ratios for the two types of mafic igneous rocks. These indicate that the mantle sources of these mafic rocks would possess geochemical signatures that were acquired through chemical metasomatism by slab-derived fluids rather than physical mixing with mélange diapirs. Furthermore, the geochemical signatures allow for distinction between the oceanic slab-derived aqueous solution and the seafloor sediment-derived hydrous melt. This qualitative interpretation is quantitatively confirmed by model calculations of trace elements and Sr–Nd–Li isotopes in the two types of mafic igneous rocks. Therefore, the target mafic igneous rocks provide the geochemical evidence for the formation of their mantle sources through chemical metasomatism by incorporating the two types of metasomatic agent into the mantle wedge. This demonstrates a strong preference for the fluid metasomatism model over the mélange diapirism model for the origin of mafic arc magmas.

Himalayan Zircons Resurface in Sumatran Arc Volcanoes Through Sediment Recycling

Abstract:Understanding the processes of subducted sediment recycling in subduction zones is vital to decipher Earth’s crust-mantle interactions. This study uses along-arc geochemical variations and zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotopes of Quaternary arc basalts and andesites on Sumatra Island, Indonesia to assess the mode of sediment recycling in subduction zones. The Hf-O isotopes of inherited zircons of the basalts and andesites near the Toba Caldera indicate that some of them were derived from subducted terrigenous sediments mainly sourced from the (eastern) Himalaya. Hybridization of the subducted sediments with the mantle also accounts for the enriched Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of arc volcanic rocks near the Toba Caldera. Thermodynamic modeling indicates that the subducted sediments did not melt on the slab surface. Rather, geochemical evidence supports their formation as diapirs that rise buoyantly through the hot mantle wedge and contribute to ~30 to 45% of the magma source of the arc volcanic rocks near Toba.

Abstract:The lithium cycling in the supra-subduction mantle wedge is crucial for understanding the generation of Li-rich magmas that may potentially source ore deposition in continental arcs. Here, we look from the mantle source perspective at the geological processes controlling the Li mobility in convergent margins, by characterizing a set of sub-arc mantle xenoliths from the southern Andes (Coyhaique, western Patagonia). The mineral trace element signatures and oxygen fugacity estimates (FMQ > + 3) in some of these peridotite xenoliths record the interaction with arc magmas enriched in fluid-mobile elements originally scavenged by slab dehydration. This subduction-related metasomatism was poorly effective on enhancing the Li inventory of the sub-arc lithospheric mantle, underpinning the inefficiency of slab-derived fluids on mobilizing Li through the mantle wedge. However, major and trace element compositions of mantle minerals in other xenoliths also record transient thermal and chemical anomalies associated with the percolation of slab window-related magmas, which exhibit an "adakite"-type geochemical fingerprint inherited by slab-derived melts produced during ridge subduction and slab window opening event. As these melts percolated through the shallow (7.2-16.8 kbar) and hot (952-1054 °C) lithospheric mantle wedge, they promoted the crystallization of metasomatic clinopyroxene having exceptionally high Li abundances (6-15 ppm). Numerical modeling shows that low degrees (< 10%) of partial melting of this Li-rich and fertile sub-arc lithospheric mantle generates primitive melts having two-fold Li enrichment (~13 ppm) compared with average subduction-zone basalts. Prolonged fractional crystallization of these melts produces extremely Li-enriched silicic rocks, which may stoke the Li inventory of mineralizing fluids in the shallow crust.

Abstract:The composition of continental subduction-zone fluids varies dramatically from dilute aqueous solutions at subsolidus conditions to hydrous silicate melts at supersolidus conditions, with variable concentrations of fluid-mobile incompatible trace elements. At ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic conditions, supercritical fluids may occur with variable compositions. The water component of these fluids primarily derives from structural hydroxyl and molecular water in hydrous and nominally anhydrous minerals at UHP conditions. While the breakdown of hydrous minerals is the predominant water source for fluid activity in the subduction factory, water released from nominally anhydrous minerals provides an additional water source. These different sources of water may accumulate to induce partial melting of UHP metamorphic rocks on and above their wet solidii. Silica is the dominant solute in the deep fluids, followed by aluminum and alkalis. Trace element abundances are low in metamorphic fluids at subsolidus conditions, but become significantly elevated in anatectic melts at supersolidus conditions. The compositions of dissolved and residual minerals are a function of pressure-temperature and whole-rock composition, which exert a strong control on the trace element signature of liberated fluids. The trace element patterns of migmatic leucosomes in UHP rocks and multiphase solid inclusions in UHP minerals exhibit strong enrichment of large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and moderate enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE) but depletion of high field strength elements (HFSE) and heavy rare earth elements (HREE), demonstrating their crystallization from anatectic melts of crustal protoliths. Interaction of the anatectic melts with the mantle wedge peridotite leads to modal metasomatism with the generation of new mineral phases as well as cryptic metasomatism that is only manifested by the enrichment of fluid-mobile incompatible trace elements in orogenic peridotites. Partial melting of the metasomatic mantle domains gives rise to a variety of mafic igneous rocks in collisional orogens and their adjacent active continental margins. The study of such metasomatic processes and products is of great importance to understanding of the mass transfer at the slab-mantle interface in subduction channels. Therefore, the property and behavior of subduction-zone fluids are a key for understanding of the crust-mantle interaction at convergent plate margins.

Abstract:Subduction zone metamorphism (SZM) and behaviors of chemical elements in response to this process are important for both arc magmatism and mantle compositional heterogeneity. In this paper, we report the results of our petrographic and geochemical studies on blueschist and eclogite facies rocks of sedimentary and basaltic protoliths from two metamorphic sub-belts with different metamorphic histories in the North Qilian Mountain, Northwest China. The protolith of low-grade blueschists is basaltic in composition and is most likely produced in a back-arc setting, while the protoliths of high-grade blueschists/eclogites geochemically resemble the present-day normal and enriched mid-oceanic ridge basalts plus some volcanic arc rocks. The meta-sedimentary rocks, including meta-graywacke, meta-pelite, meta-chert and marble, show geochemical similarity to global oceanic (subducted) sediments. Assuming that high field strength elements (HFSEs) are relatively immobile, the correlated variations of rare earth elements (REEs) and Th with HFSEs suggest that all these elements are probably also immobile, whereas Pb and Sr are mobile in rocks of both basaltic and sedimentary protoliths during SZM. Ba, Cs and Rb are immobile in rocks of sedimentary protoliths and mobile in rocks of basaltic protolith. The apparent mobility of U in rocks of basaltic protolith may be inherited from seafloor alterations rather than caused by SZM.On the basis of in situ mineral compositional analysis (both major and trace elements), the most significant trace element storage minerals in these subduction-zone metamorphic rocks are: lawsonite, pumpellyite, apatite, garnet and epidote group minerals for REEs, white micas (both phengite and paragonite) for large ion lithophile elements, rutile and titanite for HFSEs. The presence and stability of these minerals exert the primary controls on the geochemical behaviors of most of these elements during SZM. The immobility of REEs, Th and U owing to their redistribution into newly formed minerals suggests that subduction-zone dehydration metamorphism will not contribute to the enrichment of these elements in arc magmatism. These observations require the formation and contribution of supercritical fluids or hydrous melts (these can effectively transport the aforementioned incompatible elements) from greater depths to arc magmatism. In addition, the overall sub-chondritic Nb/Ta ratio retained in rutile-bearing eclogites indicates that the subducting/subducted residual ocean crust passing through SZM cannot be responsible for the missing Nb (relative to Ta) in the bulk silicate earth.
A mélange contribution to arc magmas recorded by Nd–Hf isotopic decoupling: An example from the southern Qiangtang Block, central Tibet

Abstract:Subduction zones are the main sites of material exchange between the crust and mantle. Sediments subducted at these zones are widely considered to play a key role in generating arc magmas. Here we report whole-rock Nd–Hf isotopic compositions of late Mesozoic intermediate–felsic igneous rocks from the southern Qiangtang Block, central Tibet. The late Jurassic Rena Co (ca. 150 Ma) and Jiacuo (ca. 152 Ma) granodiorites, which were derived from ancient lower crust, show Nd–Hf isotopic coupling (ΔεHf(t) = 0.7–2.4). Conversely, the early Cretaceous Rena Co granodiorite porphyries (ca. 112 Ma), which were derived from juvenile lower crust, display marked Nd–Hf isotopic decoupling (ΔεHf(t) = 7.5). We suggest that the juvenile crust was compositionally andesitic and similar to the Duolong andesitic rocks (118–106 Ma) of the southern Qiangtang Block, which were derived by partial melting of the mélange (a physical mixture of mid-ocean ridge basalts, subducted sediments, and mantle-wedge peridotites). A simple mixing modeling indicates that the source of the early Cretaceous Duolong andesitic rocks includes 1–2% bulk subducted sediments. The Duolong andesitic rocks also show Nd–Hf isotopic decoupling (ΔεHf(t) = 3.0–11.3). Furthermore, the early Cretaceous Duolong dioritic and granitic rocks, which were generated by mixing between andesitic melts and ancient-lower-crust-derived magmas, display Nd–Hf isotopic decoupling. Thus, we infer a significant contribution of mélange melting in the Nd–Hf isotopic decoupling of early Cretaceous igneous rocks of the southern Qiangtang Block.

Abstract:There is growing agreement that subducted sediments recycled into the deep mantle could make a significant contribution to the generation of various mantle-derived rocks. However, solid evidence and examples to support this view are few, and whether or not the subducted sediments can act as the dominating material source for the magma is unclear. Here, we report a comprehensive geochemical study that demonstrates that the newly identified Early Mesozoic calc-alkaline lamprophyres in the northern Guangxi Province, southeastern Yangtze Block in South China were likely derived in large part from the partial melting of the subducted terrigenous sediments in the deep mantle. The investigated lamprophyres are SiO 2 -rich minettes, characterized by moderate TFeO and MgO and high Mg # (>70). The multi-element pattern shows a typical crustal-like signature, such as enrichments in large-ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) with troughs in Nb-Ta, Ti and Eu and peaks in Th-U and Pb. These rocks also show sediment-like ratios of Nb/U, Nb/Th and Ce/Pb, together with extremely radiogenic 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (0.71499–0.71919), unradiogenic 143 Nd/ 144 Nd (0.51188–0.51195) and radiogenic 207 Pb/ 204 Pb (15.701–15.718) isotopic compositions.

Abstract:The trace elements and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions of arc magmas have been calculated from our estimates of: (1) the chemical composition of aqueous fluids emanating from the subducting basaltic oceanic crust, based on experimental data for element mobilization by aqueous fluids during the amphibolite/eclogite transition [1]; (2) the modal and chemical composition of the hydrous peridotite layer, which is formed by addition of the fluid derived from amphibolite dehydration to the base of the mantle wedge and the change in the hydrous mantle mode with increasing pressure and temperature; (3) the chemical composition of the fluid phase released by amphibole breakdown within the down-dragged hydrous peridotite layer, beneath the volcanic front; and (4) the mixing ratio of the this fluid with the pre-existing mantle wedge, as constrained by the H2O content of arc magmas and appropriate degrees of partial melting. The resulting estimate for the chemical composition of primary arc basalt magma matches well with that of typical oceanic arc basalts. This supports the suggestion that aqueous fluids derived from the subducting crust play an essential role in generating arc magmatism and in producing their distinctive chemistry. Our calculations also indicate that more aqueous fluid enters the magma source region beneath the trench-side volcanic chain from amphibole breakdown than beneath sites of backarc-side volcanism due to phlogopite decomposition. This greater fluid flux beneath the volcanic front is consistent with the observed greater volume and/or number density of volcanoes at the volcanic front than behind the volcanic front — one of the most notable physical features of arc magmatism.
