Abstract:Cytokines are produced by many kinds of cells,especially the immune cells.Cytokines that have strong biological activities bind to the specific receptors on target cell surface.Studies have shown that the expression levels of cytokines in patients with epilepsy compared with healthy people change significantly.Under normal circumstances,brain tissue seldom expresses cytokines.But cytokines have been shown to be overexpressed in early seizures.This result showed the brain in inflammatory state started the immune response,which was helpful for returning the normal physiological state.However,some predispositions may induce seizures during inflammatory conditions like colitis,pneumonia and rheumatoid arthritis.So the inflammatory cytokines and growth factors may play dual roles in affecting seizure susceptibility.The roles of cytokines in epilepsy are reviewed in this article.
