Abstract:This paper concerns the reflection of shock waves for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension. It is shown that the mixed initial–boundary value problem for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with nonlinear boundary conditions on the quarter-plane {(t,x)∣t≥0,x≥0} admits a unique global piecewise C1 solution u=u(t,x) containing only shock waves with small amplitude and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the Riemann solution u=U(xt) of the corresponding Riemann problem, if the positive eigenvalues are genuinely nonlinear and the Riemann solution has only shock waves, and no rarefaction waves and contact discontinuities. Our result indicates that the Riemann solution u=U(xt) consisting of only shock waves possesses a semi-global nonlinear structure stability.

Abstract:It is proven that a class of the generalized Riemann problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with the uniform damping term admits a unique global piecewise C1 solution u=u(t,x) containing only n shock waves with small amplitude on t⩾0 and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the similarity solution u=U(xt) of the corresponding homogeneous Riemann problem. As an application of our result, we prove the existence of global shock solutions, piecewise continuous and piecewise smooth solution with shock discontinuities, of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory with a single jump initial data. We also give an example to show that the uniform damping mechanism is not strong enough to prevent the formation of shock waves.
Shock Capturing Scheme Based on Two- Shock Approximation to Riemann Problem

Abstract:Riemann problem is a building block of modern high resolution shock capturing schemes. The exact solution of Riemann problem can not be written in close form. Certain iteration procedures are needed to get the explicit solution. Therefore, numerical schemes based on exact Riemann solver are computationally very expensive. In order to improve the computational efficiency, a shock capturing scheme to the original Riemann problem is proposed based on the two shock approximation procedure. In the scheme, all waves in the structure of Riemann problem solution are treated as shock waves. This method keeps non linear feature for Riemann problem, and the entropy does not decrease. Numerical tests indicate that the proposed scheme is efficient and of high resolution to shocks and contact discontinuities.

System (1.1) has the two eigenvalues Ai = u and A2 = 2u with corresponding right eigenvectors r\ = (0,1),r2 = (1 ,v/u)T, and VAi • r 1 =0, VA2 • r2 = 2. Thus (1.1) is nonstrictly hyperbolic and Ai is linearly degenerate; A2 is genuinely nonlinear. We recall that the classical Riemann solution is composed of a shock (contact discontinuity) or rarefaction of the slower family followed by a wave of the second. But in the present situation, one finds that no classical weak solutions exist for certain states (u±,v±), and distributions of the form of Dirac delta shock waves supported on discontinuity lines are found necessary, even though for systems of conservation laws satisfying the classical assumptions (strict hyperbolicity and genuine nonlinearity), the Riemann problem breaks down for some large data [5]. For the two-dimensional system of conservation laws we refer the reader to [10]. System (1.1) with trivial difference (t —> 21) was studied by Korchinski [6] in his Ph.D. Thesis in 1977. Generalized delta-functions were used in his numerical study and in the construction of his unique solution to the Riemann problem. Discontinuity-resolving shock-capturing schemes on unstructured grids

Abstract:Solving compressible flows containing discontinuities remains a major challenge for numerical methods especially on unstructured grids. Thus in this work, we make contributions to shock capturing schemes on unstructured grids with aim of resolving discontinuities with low numerical dissipation. Different from conventional shock capturing schemes which only use polynomials as interpolation functions on unstructured grids, the proposed scheme employs the linear polynomial as well as non-polynomial as reconstruction candidates. For linear polynomial, the second order MUSCL scheme with the MLP (Multi-dimensional Limiting Process) slope limiter is adopted. The multi-dimensional THINC (Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface Capturing) function with quadratic surface representation and Gaussian quadrature, so-called THINC/QQ, is used as the non-polynomial reconstruction candidate. With these reconstruction candidates, a multi-stage boundary variation diminishing (BVD) algorithm which aims to minimize numerical dissipation is designed on unstructured grids to select the final reconstruction function. The resulted shock capturing scheme is named as MUSCL-THINC/QQ-BVD. The performance of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through solving compressible single-phase and multi-phase problems where the discontinuity is the typical flow structure. The numerical results show that the proposed scheme is capable of capturing sharp discontinuous profiles without numerical oscillations as well as resolving vortices associated with Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities along shear layers and material interfaces. In comparison with schemes only replying on high order polynomials, the proposed scheme shows significant improvement of resolution across discontinuities. Thus, this work provides an accurate and robust shock-capturing scheme to resolve discontinuities in compressible flows.

Abstract:Existence and admissibility of $\delta$-shock type solution is discussed for the following nonconvex strictly hyperbolic system arising in studues of plasmas: \pa_t u + \pa_x \big(\Sfrac{u^2+v^2}{2} \big) &=0 \pa_t v +\pa_x(v(u-1))&=0. The system is fully nonlinear, i.e. it is nonlinear with respect to both variables. The latter system does not admit the classical Lax-admissible solution to certain Riemann problems. By introducing complex valued corrections in the framework of the weak asymptotic method, we show that an compressive $\delta$-shock type solution resolves such Riemann problems. By letting the approximation parameter to zero, the corrections become real valued and we obtain a $\delta$-type solution concept. In the frame of that concept, we can show that every $2\times 2$ system of conservation laws admits $\delta$-type solution.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of singularities and the formation of shocks for a class of multidimensional quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws including the multidimensional Keyfitz-Kranzer system with a radial state function. Precisely speaking, for these kind of systems we give sharp estimates on the blow-up rate of the smooth solution, provide a complete description of the solution close to the blow-up point, and construct the entropy solution in a neighbourhood of the blow-up point, which contains a unique shock surface issuing from the blow-up point. Abstract:We present and explore a new shock-capturing particle hydrodynamics approach. We enhance a commonly used SPH discretization with Roe's approximate Riemann solver where we use slope-limited linear reconstruction in the dissipative terms of the solver. All gradients of the method are calculated with linearly reproducing kernels that are constructed to enforce the two lowest order consistency relations so that constant and linear functions can be recovered to machine precision. We scrutinize the method with a set of challenging 3D benchmark problems ranging from shocks over instabilities to Schulz-Rinne-type vorticity creating shocks. In all of them we find excellent agreement with analytic/reference solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, the author proves the global structure stability of the Lax's Riemann solution u=U(xt), containing only shocks and contact discontinuities, of general n×n quasilinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws. More precisely, the author proves the global existence and uniqueness of the piecewise C1 solution u=u(t,x) of a class of generalized Riemann problem, which can be regarded as a perturbation of the corresponding Riemann problem, for the quasilinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws; moreover, this solution has a global structure similar to that of the solution u=U(xt). Combining the results in Kong (Global structure instability of Riemann solutions of quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws: rarefaction waves, to appear), the author proves that the Lax's Riemann solution of general n×n quasilinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws is globally structurally stable if and only if it contains only non-degenerate shocks and contact discontinuities, but no rarefaction waves and other weak discontinuities.

Abstract:One often believes that there is no shock formation for the Cauchy problem of quasilinear hyperbolic systems (of conservation laws) with linearly degenerate characteristic fields; It has been a conjecture for a long time (see Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 2004; 172:65-91; Compressible Fluid Flow and Systems of Conservation Laws in Several Space Variables. Springer: New York, 1984) and it is still an open problem in the general situation up to now. In this paper, a framework to justify this conjecture is proposed, and, by means of the concept such as the strict block hyperbolicity, the part richness and the successively block-closed system, some general kinds of quasilinear hyperbolic systems, which verify the conjecture, are given. Abstract:In this paper, the problem on formation and construction of a multidimensional shock wave is studied for the first order conservation law $\partial_t u+\partial_x F(u)+\partial_y G(u)=0$ with smooth initial data $u_0(x,y)$. It is well-known that the smooth solution $u$ will blow up on the time $T^*=-\frac{1}{\min{H(\xi,\eta)}}$ when $\min{H(\xi,\eta})<0$ holds for $H(\xi,\eta)=\partial_{\xi}(F'(u_0(\xi,\eta)))+\partial_{\eta}(G'(u_0(\xi,\eta)))$, more precisely, only the first order derivatives $\nabla_{t,x,y}u$ blow up on $t=T^*$ meanwhile $u$ itself is still continuous until $t=T^*$. Under the generic nondegenerate condition of $H(\xi,\eta)$, we construct a local weak entropy solution $u$ for $t\ge T^*$ which is not uniformly Lipschitz continuous on two sides of a shock surface $\Sigma$. The strength of the constructed shock is zero on the initial blowup curve $\Gamma$ and then gradually increases for $t>T^*$. Additionally, in the neighbourhood of $\Gamma$, some detailed and precise descriptions on the singularities of solution $u$ are given.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of shock formation of the 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equation-(1 + 3G ''(0)(partial derivative(t)phi)(2))partial derivative(2)(t)phi + Delta phi = 0,where is a non-zero constant. We will exhibit a family of smooth initial data and show that the foliation of the incoming characteristic hypersurfaces collapses. Similar to 1-dimensional conservational laws, we refer this specific type breakdown of smooth solutions as shock formation. Since satisfies the classical null condition, it admits global smooth solutions for small data. Therefore, we will work with large data (in energy norm). Moreover, no symmetry condition is imposed on the initial datum. We emphasize the geometric perspectives of shock formation in the proof. More specifically, the key idea is to study the interplay between the following two objects: (1) the energy estimates of the linearized equations of ; (2) the differential geometry of the Lorentzian metric . Indeed, the study of the characteristic hypersurfaces (implies shock formation) is the study of the null hypersurfaces of g. The techniques in the proof are inspired by the work (Christodoulou in The Formation of Shocks in 3-Dimensional Fluids. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2007) in which the formation of shocks for 3-dimensional relativistic compressible Euler equations with small initial data is established. We also use the short pulse method which is introduced in the study of formation of black holes in general relativity in Christodoulou (The Formation of Black Holes in General Relativity. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2009) and generalized in Klainerman and Rodnianski (Acta Math 208(2):211-333, 2012).

Abstract:The study on the shock formation and the regularities of the resulting shock surfaces for hyperbolic conservation laws is a basic problem in the nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we are concerned with the shock formation and the optimal regularities of the resulting shock curves for the 1D conservation law partial derivative(t)u +partial derivative(x)f (u) = 0 with the smooth initial data u(0, x) = u(0)(x). If u(0)(x) is an element of C-1(R) and f (u) is an element of C-2(R), it is well-known that the solution u will blow up on the time T* = - 1/min g'(x) when min g'(x) < 0 holds for g(x) = f'(u(0)(x)). Let x(0) be a local minimum point of g'(x) such that g'(x(0)) = min g'(x) < 0 and g ''(x(0)) = 0, g((3))(x(0)) > 0 (which is called the generic nondegenerate condition), then by theorem 2 of Lebaud (1994 J. Math. Pures Appl. 9 523-565), a weak entropy solution u together with the shock curve x = phi(t)is an element of C-2[T-*, T-* + epsilon) starting from the blowup point (T-*, x(*) = x(0) + g(x(0))T-*) can be locally constructed. Our main aims are to show that: around the blowup point, the shock really appears whether the initial data are degenerate with finite orders or with infinite orders; the optimal regularities of the shock solution and the resulting shock curve have the explicit relations with the degenerate degrees of the initial data.
An exact Riemann solver based solution for regular shock refraction

Abstract:We study the classical problem of planar shock refraction at an oblique density discontinuity, separating two gases at rest. When the shock impinges on the density discontinuity, it refracts and in the hydrodynamical case 3 signals arise. Regular refraction means that these signals meet at a single point, called the triple point. After reflection from the top wall, the contact discontinuity becomes unstable due to local Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, causing the contact surface to roll up and develop the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability. We present an exact Riemann solver based solution strategy to describe the initial self similar refraction phase, by which we can quantify the vorticity deposited on the contact interface. We investigate the effect of a perpendicular magnetic field and quantify how addition of a perpendicular magnetic field increases the deposition of vorticity on the contact interface slightly under constant Atwood number. We predict wave pattern transitions, in agreement with experiments, von Neumann shock refraction theory, and numerical simulations performed with the grid-adaptive code AMRVAC. These simulations also describe the later phase of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability.

A Shock Capturing Artificial Viscosity Scheme in Consistent with the Compact High-Order Finite Volume Methods

Abstract:This paper presents a shock capturing artificial viscosity scheme for the compact high-order finite volume methods in terms of the variational reconstructions on unstructured grids. The key for the design of the present artificial viscosity is the smoothness indicator, which is based on the concept of interfacial jump integration, measuring the discontinuities of the reconstruction polynomial and its spatial derivatives across a cell interface. Since the variational reconstruction is carried out by minimizing the functional in terms of the interfacial jump integration, the present smoothness indicator gives a discretization-consistent measurement of the smoothness of the flow fields that is sufficiently large in the region near discontinuities, and is in the same order of magnitude as the spatial truncation error of the finite volume scheme in smooth regions. These properties ensure that the newly developed artificial viscosity scheme has the problem-independent capability to suppress non-physical oscillations near discontinuities and preserve the theoretical order of accuracy for smooth flow. The shock capturing capability of the proposed artificial viscosity scheme has been demonstrated by a number of numerical examples confirming its essentially non-oscillatory and high-resolution properties. Additionally, the proposed artificial viscosity scheme exhibits higher computational efficiency than the approach based on a traditional limiter.

Abstract:We introduce a direct method allowing to solve numerically inverse type problems for linear hyperbolic equations. We first consider the reconstruction of the full solution of the wave equation posed in $\Omega\times (0,T)$ - $\Omega$ a bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^N$ - from a partial boundary observation. We employ a least-squares technique and minimize the $L^2$-norm of the distance from the observation to any solution. Taking the hyperbolic equation as the main constraint of the problem, the optimality conditions are reduced to a mixed formulation involving both the state to reconstruct and a Lagrange multiplier. Under usual geometric optic conditions, we show the well-posedness of this mixed formulation (in particular the inf-sup condition) and then introduce a numerical approximation based on space-time finite elements discretization. We prove the strong convergence of the approximation and then discuss several examples for $N=1$ and $N=2$. The problem of the reconstruction of both the state and the source term is also addressed.
