Abstract:A generalization of Hurwitz stable polynomials to real rational functions is considered. We establishe an analogue of the Hurwitz stability criterion for rational functions and introduce a new type of determinants that can be treated as a generalization of the Hurwitz determinants.

Abstract:We describe a wide class of polynomials, which is a natural generalization of Hurwitz stable polynomials. We also give a detailed account of so-called self-interlacing polynomials, which are dual to Hurwitz stable polynomials but have only real and simple zeroes. All proofs are given using properties of rational functions mapping the upper half-plane of the complex plane to the lower half-plane. Matrices with self-interlacing spectra and other applications of generalized Hurwitz polynomials are discussed.

Abstract:Colloquially, quantitatively Hyper-Positive functions form a sub-family of the "Strictly Positive real" functions, where in addition state-space realization always exists and the limit at infinity is non-singular. In scalar terminology, such function maps the right-half of the complex plane into a sub-region of the right-half plane, which can be contained in a finite disk. Moreover, under inversion this disk is mapped onto itself. In [9] we showed that these functions appear in the "absolute stability" Lurie-type problems and characterized these families through their state-space realization, in the spirit of the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma. Here, we present additional characterizations, i.e. as rational functions and through the corresponding kernels. Subsequently, a description of all solutions of the tangential Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem, in this framework, is presented.

Abstract:Considering the holomorphic functions in a polycylindrical domain which are rational in some of the variables for the arbitrary fixed values of other variables, we prove that the functions are representable as a ratio of polynomials in these variables whose coefficients are holomorphic in the remaining variables. We use the Kronecker method for establishing some criterion for the rationality of a holomorphic function of one complex variable in a neighborhood of zero by using the properties of Hankel matrices.

Abstract:<p>In this paper we associate a class of Hurwitz matrix polynomials with Stieltjes positive definite matrix sequences. This connection leads to an extension of two classical criteria of Hurwitz stability for real polynomials to matrix polynomials: tests for Hurwitz stability via positive definiteness of block-Hankel matrices built from matricial Markov parameters and via matricial Stieltjes continued fractions. We obtain further conditions for Hurwitz stability in terms of block-Hankel minors and quasiminors, which may be viewed as a weak version of the total positivity criterion.</p>

Abstract:We describe a new subclass of the class of real polynomials with real simple roots called self-interlacing polynomials. This subclass is isomorphic to the class of real Hurwitz stable polynomials (all roots in the open left half-plane). In the work, we present basic properties of self-interlacing polynomials and their relations with Hurwitz and Hankel matrices as well as with Stiltjes type of continued fractions. We also establish “self-interlacing” analogues of the well-known Hurwitz and Liénard–Chipart criterions for stable polynomials. A criterion of Hurwitz stability of polynomials in terms of minors of certain Hankel matrices is established.

Abstract:This paper elaborates on a relationship between matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions and Hurwitz stable matrix polynomials, which generalizes the corresponding classical stability criterion. The main motivation comes from the author's recent stability studies linked with matricial Markov parameters. To fulfill our goals, we first give a partial-fraction decomposition of a self-adjoint rational matrix function with the Herglotz-Nevanlinna property. The next step is to connect a matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna function with its matricial Laurent series. Certain matrix extensions to two classical theorems by Chebotarev and Grommer, respectively, are also established.

Abstract:For regular continued fraction, if a real number [Formula: see text] and its rational approximation [Formula: see text] satisfying [Formula: see text], then, after deleting the last integer of the partial quotients of [Formula: see text], the sequence of the remaining partial quotients is a prefix of that of [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we show that the situation is completely different if we consider the Hurwitz continued fraction expansions of a complex number and its rational approximations. More specifically, we consider the set [Formula: see text] of complex numbers which are well approximated with the given bound [Formula: see text] and have quite different Hurwitz continued fraction expansions from that of their rational approximations. The Hausdorff and packing dimensions of such set are determined. It turns out that its packing dimension is always full for any given approximation bound [Formula: see text] and its Hausdorff dimension is equal to that of the [Formula: see text]-approximable set [Formula: see text] of complex numbers. As a consequence, we also obtain an analogue of the classical Jarník theorem in real case.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an algebraic variety equipped with a dominant rational self-map $\phi:X\to X$. A new quantity measuring the interaction of $(X,\phi)$ with trivial dynamical systems is introduced; the stabilised algebraic dimension of $(X,\phi)$ captures the maximum number of new algebraically independent invariant rational functions on the cartesian product of $(X, \phi)$ and $(Y, \psi)$, as $(Y,\psi)$ ranges over all algebraic dynamical systems. It is shown that this birational invariant agrees with the maximum dimension of a dominant equivariant rational image $(X',\phi')$ where $\phi'$ is part of an algebraic group action on $X'$. As a consequence, it is deduced that if some cartesian power of $(X,\phi)$ admits a nonconstant invariant rational function, then already the second cartesian power does.

Abstract:Hyper-Positive real, matrix-valued, rational functions are associated with absolute stability (the Lurie problem). Here, quantitative subsets of Hyper-positive functions, related through nested inclusions, are introduced. Structurally, this family of functions turns out to be matrix-convex and closed under inversion. A state-space characterization of these functions, through a corresponding Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma is given. Technically, the classical Linear Matrix Inclusions, associated with passive systems, are here substituted by Quadratic Matrix Inclusions.

Abstract:Asymptotically sharp Bernstein- and Markov-type inequalities are established for rational functions on C^2 smooth Jordan curves and arcs. The results are formulated in terms of the normal derivatives of certain Green's functions with poles at the poles of the rational functions in question. As a special case (when all the poles are at infinity) the corresponding results for polynomials are recaptured.

Abstract:Complex rational curves have been used to represent circular splines as well as many classical curves including epicycloids, cardioids, Joukowski profiles, and the lemniscate of Bernoulli. Complex rational curves are known to have low degree (typically half the degree of the corresponding rational planar curve), circular precision, invariance with respect to Möbius transformations, special implicit forms, an easy detection procedure, and a fast algorithm for computing their μ-bases. But only certain very special rational planar curves are also complex rational curves. To construct a wider collection of curves with similar appealing properties, we generalize complex rational curves to hyperbolic and parabolic rational curves by invoking the hyperbolic and parabolic numbers. We show that the special properties of complex rational curves extend to these hyperbolic and parabolic rational curves. We also provide examples to flesh out the theory.

Abstract:The robustness of a linear system in the view of parametric variations requires a stability analysis of a family of polynomials. If the parameters vary in a compact set A , then obtaining necessary and sufficient conditions to determine stability of the family FA is one of the most important tasks in the field of robust control. Three interesting classes of families arise when A is a diamond, a box or a ball of dimension n+1 . These families will be denoted by FDn , FBn , and FSn , respectively. In this article, a study is presented to contribute to the understanding of Hurwitz stability of families of polynomials FA . As a result of this study and the use of classical results found in the literature, it is shown the existence of an extremal polynomial f(α∗,x) whose stability determines the stability of the entire family FA . In this case f(α∗,x) comes from minimizing determinants and in some cases f(α∗,x) coincides with a Kharitonov's polynomial. Thus another extremal property of Kharitonov's polynomials has been found. To illustrate our approach, it is applied to families such as FDn , FBn , and FSn with n≤5 . The study is also used to obtain the maximum robustness of the parameters of a polynomial. To exemplify the proposed results, first, a family FDn is taken from the literature to compare and corroborate the effectiveness and the advantage of our perspective. Followed by two examples where the maximum robustness of the parameters of polynomials of degree 3 and 4 are obtained. Lastly, a family FB5 is proposed whose extreme polynomial is not necessarily a Kharitonov's polynomial. Finally, a family FS3 is used to exemplify that if the boundary of A is given by a polynomial equation in several variables, the number of candidates to be an extremal polynomial is finite.

Abstract:We study how the field of definition of a rational function changes under iteration. We provide a complete classification of polynomials with the property that the field of definition of one of their iterates drops in degree (over a given base field). We show with families of examples that this characterization does not hold for rational functions. Finally, we also classify fractional linear transformations with this property.

Abstract:We provide detailed local descriptions of stable polynomials in terms of their homogeneous decompositions, Puiseux expansions, and transfer function realizations. We use this theory to first prove that bounded rational functions on the polydisk possess non-tangential limits at every boundary point. We relate higher non-tangential regularity and distinguished boundary behavior of bounded rational functions to geometric properties of the zero sets of stable polynomials via our local descriptions. For a fixed stable polynomial $p$, we analyze the ideal of numerators $q$ such that $q/p$ is bounded on the bi-upper half plane. We completely characterize this ideal in several geometrically interesting situations including smooth points, double points, and ordinary multiple points of $p$. Finally, we analyze integrability properties of bounded rational functions and their derivatives on the bidisk.
