Abstract:We study the fully dynamic All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) problem in undirected edge-weighted graphs. Given an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with non-negative edge lengths, that undergoes an online sequence of edge insertions and deletions, the goal is to support approximate distance queries and shortest-path queries. We provide a deterministic algorithm for this problem, that, for a given precision parameter $\epsilon$, achieves approximation factor $(\log\log n)^{2^{O(1/\epsilon^3)}}$, and has amortized update time $O(n^{\epsilon}\log L)$ per operation, where $L$ is the ratio of longest to shortest edge length. Query time for distance-query is $O(2^{O(1/\epsilon)}\cdot \log n\cdot \log\log L)$, and query time for shortest-path query is $O(|E(P)|+2^{O(1/\epsilon)}\cdot \log n\cdot \log\log L)$, where $P$ is the path that the algorithm returns. To the best of our knowledge, even allowing any $o(n)$-approximation factor, no adaptive-update algorithms with better than $\Theta(m)$ amortized update time and better than $\Theta(n)$ query time were known prior to this work. We also note that our guarantees are stronger than the best current guarantees for APSP in decremental graphs in the adaptive-adversary setting.

Improved Time Bounds for All Pairs Non-decreasing Paths in General Digraphs.

Abstract:We present improved algorithms for solving the All Pairs Non-decreasing Paths (APNP) problem on weighted digraphs. Currently, the best upper bound on APNP is O~(n^{(9+omega)/4})=O(n^{2.844}), obtained by Vassilevska Williams [TALG 2010 and SODA'08], where omega<2.373 is the usual exponent of matrix multiplication. Our first algorithm improves the time bound to O~(n^{2+omega/3})=O(n^{2.791}). The algorithm determines, for every pair of vertices s, t, the minimum last edge weight on a non-decreasing path from s to t, where a non-decreasing path is a path on which the edge weights form a non-decreasing sequence. The algorithm proposed uses the combinatorial properties of non-decreasing paths. Also a slightly improved algorithm with running time O(n^{2.78}) is presented.
Incremental Approximate Maximum Flow on Undirected Graphs in Subpolynomial Update Time

Abstract:We provide an algorithm which, with high probability, maintains a $(1-\epsilon)$-approximate maximum flow on an undirected graph undergoing $m$-edge additions in amortized $m^{o(1)} \epsilon^{-3}$ time per update. To obtain this result, we provide a more general algorithm that solves what we call the incremental, thresholded $p$-norm flow problem that asks to determine the first edge-insertion in an undirected graph that causes the minimum $\ell_p$-norm flow to decrease below a given threshold in value. Since we solve this thresholded problem, our data structure succeeds against an adaptive adversary that can only see the data structure's output. Furthermore, since our algorithm holds for $p = 2$, we obtain improved algorithms for dynamically maintaining the effective resistance between a pair of vertices in an undirected graph undergoing edge insertions. Our algorithm builds upon previous dynamic algorithms for approximately solving the minimum-ratio cycle problem that underlie previous advances on the maximum flow problem [Chen-Kyng-Liu-Peng-Probst Gutenberg-Sachdeva, FOCS '22] as well as recent dynamic maximum flow algorithms [v.d.Brand-Liu-Sidford, STOC '23]. Instead of using interior point methods, which were a key component of these recent advances, our algorithm uses an optimization method based on $\ell_p$-norm iterative refinement and the multiplicative weight update method. This ensures a monotonicity property in the minimum-ratio cycle subproblems that allows us to apply known data structures and bypass issues arising from adaptive queries.

New Tradeoffs for Decremental Approximate All-Pairs Shortest Paths

Abstract:We provide new tradeoffs between approximation and running time for the decremental all-pairs shortest paths (APSP) problem. For undirected graphs with $m$ edges and $n$ nodes undergoing edge deletions, we provide four new approximate decremental APSP algorithms, two for weighted and two for unweighted graphs. Our first result is $(2+ \epsilon)$-APSP with total update time $\tilde{O}(m^{1/2}n^{3/2})$ (when $m= n^{1+c}$ for any constant $0<c<1$). Prior to our work the fastest algorithm for weighted graphs with approximation at most $3$ had total $\tilde O(mn)$ update time for $(1+\epsilon)$-APSP [Bernstein, SICOMP 2016]. Our second result is $(2+\epsilon, W_{u,v})$-APSP with total update time $\tilde{O}(nm^{3/4})$, where the second term is an additive stretch with respect to $W_{u,v}$, the maximum weight on the shortest path from $u$ to $v$. Our third result is $(2+ \epsilon)$-APSP for unweighted graphs in $\tilde O(m^{7/4})$ update time, which for sparse graphs ($m=o(n^{8/7})$) is the first subquadratic $(2+\epsilon)$-approximation. Our last result for unweighted graphs is $(1+\epsilon, 2(k-1))$-APSP, for $k \geq 2 $, with $\tilde{O}(n^{2-1/k}m^{1/k})$ total update time (when $m=n^{1+c}$ for any constant $c >0$). For comparison, in the special case of $(1+\epsilon, 2)$-approximation, this improves over the state-of-the-art algorithm by [Henzinger, Krinninger, Nanongkai, SICOMP 2016] with total update time of $\tilde{O}(n^{2.5})$. All of our results are randomized, work against an oblivious adversary, and have constant query time.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an improved algorithm for the All Pairs Non-decreasing Paths (APNP) problem on weighted simple digraphs, which has running time $\tilde{O}(n^{\frac{3 + \omega}{2}}) = \tilde{O}(n^{2.686})$. Here $n$ is the number of vertices, and $\omega < 2.373$ is the exponent of time complexity of fast matrix multiplication [Williams 2012, Le Gall 2014]. This matches the current best upper bound for $(\max, \min)$-matrix product [Duan, Pettie 2009] which is reducible to APNP. Thus, further improvement for APNP will imply a faster algorithm for $(\max, \min)$-matrix product. The previous best upper bound for APNP on weighted digraphs was $\tilde{O}(n^{\frac{1}{2}(3 + \frac{3 - \omega}{\omega + 1} + \omega)}) = \tilde{O}(n^{2.78})$ [Duan, Gu, Zhang 2018]. We also show an $\tilde{O}(n^2)$ time algorithm for APNP in undirected graphs which also reaches optimal within logarithmic factors.

Abstract:Given a database, the view maintenance problem is concerned with the efficient computation of the new contents of a given view when updates to the database happen. We consider the view maintenance problem for the situation when the database contains a weighted graph and the view is either the transitive closure or the answer to the all-pairs shortest-distance problem ( APSD ). We give incremental algorithms for APSD , which support both edge insertions and deletions. For transitive closure, the algorithm is applicable to a more general class of graphs than those previously explored. Our algorithms use first-order queries, along with addition (+) and less-than (<) operations ( FO (+,<)); they store O ( n 2 ) number of tuples, where n is the number of vertices, and have AC 0 data complexity for integer weights. Since FO (+,<) is a sublanguage of SQL and is supported by almost all current database systems, our maintenance algorithms are more appropriate for database applications than nondatabase query types of maintenance algorithms.
New Algorithms and Hardness for Incremental Single-Source Shortest Paths in Directed Graphs

Abstract:In the dynamic Single-Source Shortest Paths (SSSP) problem, we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$ subject to edge insertions and deletions and a source vertex $s\in V$, and the goal is to maintain the distance $d(s,t)$ for all $t\in V$. Fine-grained complexity has provided strong lower bounds for exact partially dynamic SSSP and approximate fully dynamic SSSP [ESA'04, FOCS'14, STOC'15]. Thus much focus has been directed towards finding efficient partially dynamic $(1+\epsilon)$-approximate SSSP algorithms [STOC'14, ICALP'15, SODA'14, FOCS'14, STOC'16, SODA'17, ICALP'17, ICALP'19, STOC'19, SODA'20, SODA'20]. Despite this rich literature, for directed graphs there are no known deterministic algorithms for $(1+\epsilon)$-approximate dynamic SSSP that perform better than the classic ES-tree [JACM'81]. We present the first such algorithm. We present a \emph{deterministic} data structure for incremental SSSP in weighted digraphs with total update time $\tilde{O}(n^2 \log W)$ which is near-optimal for very dense graphs; here $W$ is the ratio of the largest weight in the graph to the smallest. Our algorithm also improves over the best known partially dynamic \emph{randomized} algorithm for directed SSSP by Henzinger et al. [STOC'14, ICALP'15] if $m=\omega(n^{1.1})$. We also provide improved conditional lower bounds. Henzinger et al. [STOC'15] showed that under the OMv Hypothesis, the partially dynamic exact $s$-$t$ Shortest Path problem in undirected graphs requires amortized update or query time $m^{1/2-o(1)}$, given polynomial preprocessing time. Under a hypothesis about finding Cliques, we improve the update and query lower bound for algorithms with polynomial preprocessing time to $m^{0.626-o(1)}$. Further, under the $k$-Cycle hypothesis, we show that any partially dynamic SSSP algorithm with $O(m^{2-\epsilon})$ preprocessing time requires amortized update or query time $m^{1-o(1)}$.

Faster Approximate All Pairs Shortest Paths

Abstract:The all pairs shortest path problem (APSP) is one of the foundational problems in computer science. For weighted dense graphs on $n$ vertices, no truly sub-cubic algorithms exist to compute APSP exactly even for undirected graphs. This is popularly known as the APSP conjecture and has played a prominent role in developing the field of fine-grained complexity. The seminal result of Seidel uses fast matrix multiplication (FMM) to compute APSP on unweighted undirected graphs exactly in $\tilde{O}(n^{\omega})$ time, where $\omega=2.372$. Even for unweighted undirected graphs, it is not possible to obtain a $(2-\epsilon)$-approximation of APSP in $o(n^\omega)$ time. In this paper, we provide a multitude of new results for multiplicative and additive approximations of APSP in undirected graphs for both unweighted and weighted cases. We provide new algorithms for multiplicative 2-approximation of unweighted graphs: a deterministic one that runs in $\tilde{O}(n^{2.072})$ time and a randomized one that runs in $\tilde{O}(n^{2.032})$ on expectation improving upon the best known bound of $\tilde{O}(n^{2.25})$ by Roditty (STOC, 2023). For $2$-approximating paths of length $\geq k$, $k \geq 4$, we provide the first improvement after Dor, Halperin, Zwick (2000) for dense graphs even just using combinatorial methods, and then improve it further using FMM. We next consider additive approximations, and provide improved bounds for all additive $\beta$-approximations, $\beta \geq 4$. For weighted graphs, we show that by allowing small additive errors along with an $(1+\epsilon)$-multiplicative approximation, it is possible to improve upon Zwick's $\tilde{O}(n^\omega)$ algorithm. Our results point out the crucial role that FMM can play even on approximating APSP on unweighted undirected graphs, and reveal new bottlenecks towards achieving a quadratic running time to approximate APSP.

Abstract:First, we present a new algorithm for the single-source shortest paths problem (SSSP) in edge-weighted directed graphs, with n vertices, m edges, and both positive and negative real edge weights. Given a positive integer parameter t, in O(tm) time the algorithm finds for each vertex v a path distance from the source to v not exceeding that yielded by the shortest path from the source to v among the so called t+$$t+$$light paths. A directed path between two vertices is t+$$t+$$light if it contains at most t more edges than the minimum edge-cardinality directed path between these vertices. For t=O(n)$$t=O(n)$$, our algorithm yields an O(nm)-time solution to SSSP in directed graphs with real edge weights matching that of Bellman and Ford.Our main contribution is a new, output-sensitive algorithm for the all-pairs shortest paths problem (APSP) in directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) with positive and negative real edge weights. The running time of the algorithm depends on such parameters as the number of leaves in (lexicographically first) shortest-paths trees, and the in-degrees in the input graph. If the trees are sufficiently thin on the average, the algorithm is substantially faster than the best known algorithm.Finally, we discuss an extension of hypothetical improved upper time-bounds for APSP in non-negatively edge-weighted DAGs to include directed graphs with a polynomial number of large directed cycles.
An Efficient Algorithm for All-Pairs Bounded Edge Connectivity

Abstract:Our work concerns algorithms for an unweighted variant of Maximum Flow. In the All-Pairs Connectivity (APC) problem, we are given a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, and are tasked with computing the maximum number of edge-disjoint paths from $s$ to $t$ (equivalently, the size of a minimum $(s,t)$-cut) in $G$, for all pairs of vertices $(s,t)$. Although over undirected graphs APC can be solved in essentially optimal $n^{2+o(1)}$ time, the true time complexity of APC over directed graphs remains open: this problem can be solved in $\tilde{O}(m^\omega)$ time, where $\omega \in [2, 2.373)$ is the exponent of matrix multiplication, but no matching conditional lower bound is known. We study a variant of APC called the $k$-Bounded All Pairs Connectivity ($k$-APC) problem. In this problem, we are given an integer $k$ and graph $G$, and are tasked with reporting the size of a minimum $(s,t)$-cut only for pairs $(s,t)$ of vertices with a minimum cut size less than $k$ (if the minimum $(s,t)$-cut has size at least $k$, we just report it is "large" instead of computing the exact value). We present an algorithm solving $k$-APC in directed graphs in $\tilde{O}((kn)^\omega)$ time. This runtime is $\tilde O(n^\omega)$ for all $k$ polylogarithmic in $n$, which is essentially optimal under popular conjectures from fine-grained complexity. Previously, this runtime was only known for $k\le 2$ [Georgiadis et al., ICALP 2017]. We also study a variant of $k$-APC, the $k$-Bounded All-Pairs Vertex Connectivity ($k$-APVC) problem, which considers internally vertex-disjoint paths instead of edge-disjoint paths. We present an algorithm solving $k$-APVC in directed graphs in $\tilde{O}(k^2n^\omega)$ time. Previous work solved an easier version of the $k$-APVC problem in $\tilde O((kn)^\omega)$ time [Abboud et al, ICALP 2019].

An Improved Algorithm for Incremental DFS Tree in Undirected Graphs

Abstract:Depth first search (DFS) tree is one of the most well-known data structures for designing efficient graph algorithms. Given an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, the textbook algorithm takes $O(n+m)$ time to construct a DFS tree. In this paper, we study the problem of maintaining a DFS tree when the graph is undergoing updates. Formally, we show the following results. Incremental DFS tree: Given any arbitrary online sequence of edge or vertex insertions, we can report a DFS tree in $O(n)$ worst case time per operation, and $O\left(\min\{m \log n + n \log^2 n, n^2\}\right)$ preprocessing time. Fault tolerant DFS tree: There exists a data structure of size $O(m \log n)$, such that given any set $\mathcal{F}$ of failed vertices or edges, it can report a DFS tree of the graph $G \setminus \mathcal{F}$ in $O(n|\mathcal{F}|\log^2 n)$ time. Fully dynamic DFS tree: Given any arbitrary online sequence of edge or vertex updates, we can report a DFS tree in $O(\sqrt{nm}\log^{1.5} n)$ worst case time per operation. Our result for incremental DFS tree improves the previous $O(n \log^3 n)$ worst case update time by Baswana et al., and matches the trivial $\Omega(n)$ lower bound when it is required to explicitly output the DFS tree. Our other results also improve the corresponding state-of-the-art results by Baswana et al. as well. Our work builds on the framework of the breakthrough work by Baswana et al., together with a novel use of a tree-partition lemma by Duan and Zhang, and the celebrated fractional cascading technique by Chazelle and Guibas.
Decremental Data Structures for Connectivity and Dominators in Directed Graphs

Abstract:We introduce a new dynamic data structure for maintaining the strongly connected components (SCCs) of a directed graph (digraph) under edge deletions, so as to answer a rich repertoire of connectivity queries. Our main technical contribution is a decremental data structure that supports sensitivity queries of the form "are $ u $ and $ v $ strongly connected in the graph $ G \setminus w $?", for any triple of vertices $ u, v, w $, while $ G $ undergoes deletions of edges. Our data structure processes a sequence of edge deletions in a digraph with $n$ vertices in $O(m n \log{n})$ total time and $O(n^2 \log{n})$ space, where $m$ is the number of edges before any deletion, and answers the above queries in constant time. We can leverage our data structure to obtain decremental data structures for many more types of queries within the same time and space complexity. For instance for edge-related queries, such as testing whether two query vertices $u$ and $v$ are strongly connected in $G \setminus e$, for some query edge $e$. As another important application of our decremental data structure, we provide the first nontrivial algorithm for maintaining the dominator tree of a flow graph under edge deletions. We present an algorithm that processes a sequence of edge deletions in a flow graph in $O(m n \log{n})$ total time and $O(n^2 \log{n})$ space. For reducible flow graphs we provide an $O(mn)$-time and $O(m + n)$-space algorithm. We give a conditional lower bound that provides evidence that these running times may be tight up to subpolynomial factors.

Temporalizing digraphs via linear-size balanced bi-trees

Abstract:In a directed graph $D$ on vertex set $v_1,\dots ,v_n$, a \emph{forward arc} is an arc $v_iv_j$ where $i<j$. A pair $v_i,v_j$ is \emph{forward connected} if there is a directed path from $v_i$ to $v_j$ consisting of forward arcs. In the {\tt Forward Connected Pairs Problem} ({\tt FCPP}), the input is a strongly connected digraph $D$, and the output is the maximum number of forward connected pairs in some vertex enumeration of $D$. We show that {\tt FCPP} is in APX, as one can efficiently enumerate the vertices of $D$ in order to achieve a quadratic number of forward connected pairs. For this, we construct a linear size balanced bi-tree $T$ (an out-tree and an in-tree with same size which roots are identified). The existence of such a $T$ was left as an open problem motivated by the study of temporal paths in temporal networks. More precisely, $T$ can be constructed in quadratic time (in the number of vertices) and has size at least $n/3$. The algorithm involves a particular depth-first search tree (Left-DFS) of independent interest, and shows that every strongly connected directed graph has a balanced separator which is a circuit. Remarkably, in the request version {\tt RFCPP} of {\tt FCPP}, where the input is a strong digraph $D$ and a set of requests $R$ consisting of pairs $\{x_i,y_i\}$, there is no constant $c>0$ such that one can always find an enumeration realizing $c.|R|$ forward connected pairs $\{x_i,y_i\}$ (in either direction).

Approximating All-Pair Bounded-Leg Shortest Path and APSP-AF in Truly-Subcubic Time.

Abstract:In the bounded-leg shortest path (BLSP) problem, we are given a weighted graph G with nonnegative edge lengths, and we want to answer queries of the form "what's the shortest path from u to v, where only edges of length = f are considered.In this article we give an O~(n^{(omega+3)/2}epsilon^{-3/2}log W) time algorithm to compute a data structure that answers APSP-AF queries in O(log(epsilon^{-1}log (nW))) time and achieves (1+epsilon)-approximation, where omega < 2.373 is the exponent of time complexity of matrix multiplication, W is the upper bound of integer edge lengths, and n is the number of vertices. This is the first truly-subcubic time algorithm for these problems on dense graphs. Our algorithm utilizes the O(n^{(omega+3)/2}) time max-min product algorithm [Duan and Pettie 2009]. Since the all-pair bottleneck path (APBP) problem, which is equivalent to max-min product, can be seen as all-pair reachability for all flow, our approach indeed shows that these problems are almost equivalent in the approximation sense.

Abstract:The Feedback Vertex Set problem is undoubtedly one of the most well-studied problems in Parameterized Complexity. In this problem, given an undirected graph G and a non-negative integer k , the objective is to test whether there exists a subset of size at most k such that is a forest. After a long line of improvement, recently, Li and Nederlof [TALG, 2022] designed a randomized algorithm for the problem running in time . In the Parameterized Complexity literature, several problems around Feedback Vertex Set have been studied. Some of these include Independent Feedback Vertex Set (where the set S should be an independent set in G ), Almost Forest Deletion and Pseudoforest Deletion . In Pseudoforest Deletion , each connected component in has at most one cycle in it. However, in Almost Forest Deletion , the input is a graph G and non-negative integers , and the objective is to test whether there exists a vertex subset S of size at most k , such that is edges away from a forest. In this paper, using the methodology of Li and Nederlof [TALG, 2022], we obtain the current fastest algorithms for all these problems. In particular we obtain the following randomized algorithms.

Abstract:The all-pairs shortest distances (APSD) with differential privacy (DP) problem takes as input an undirected, weighted graph $G = (V,E, \mathbf{w})$ and outputs a private estimate of the shortest distances in $G$ between all pairs of vertices. In this paper, we present a simple $\widetilde{O}(n^{1/3}/\varepsilon)$-accurate algorithm to solve APSD with $\varepsilon$-DP, which reduces to $\widetilde{O}(n^{1/4}/\varepsilon)$ in the $(\varepsilon, \delta)$-DP setting, where $n = |V|$. Our algorithm greatly improves upon the error of prior algorithms, namely $\widetilde{O}(n^{2/3}/\varepsilon)$ and $\widetilde{O}(\sqrt{n}/\varepsilon)$ in the two respective settings, and is the first to be optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor, based on a lower bound of $\widetilde{\Omega}(n^{1/4})$. In the case where a multiplicative approximation is allowed, we give two different constructions of algorithms with reduced additive error. Our first construction allows a multiplicative approximation of $O(k\log{\log{n}})$ and has additive error $\widetilde{O}(k\cdot n^{1/k}/\varepsilon)$ in the $\varepsilon$-DP case and $\widetilde{O}(\sqrt{k}\cdot n^{1/(2k)}/\varepsilon)$ in the $(\varepsilon, \delta)$-DP case. Our second construction allows multiplicative approximation $2k-1$ and has the same asymptotic additive error as the first construction. Both constructions significantly improve upon the currently best-known additive error of, $\widetilde{O}(k\cdot n^{1/2 + 1/(4k+2)}/\varepsilon)$ and $\widetilde{O}(k\cdot n^{1/3 + 2/(9k+3)}/\varepsilon)$, respectively. Our algorithms are straightforward and work by decomposing a graph into a set of spanning trees, and applying a key observation that we can privately release APSD in trees with $O(\text{polylog}(n))$ error.

Fully Dynamic Shortest Path Reporting Against an Adaptive Adversary

Abstract:Algebraic data structures are the main subroutine for maintaining distances in fully dynamic graphs in subquadratic time. However, these dynamic algebraic algorithms generally cannot maintain the shortest paths, especially against adaptive adversaries. We present the first fully dynamic algorithm that maintains the shortest paths against an adaptive adversary in subquadratic update time. This is obtained via a combinatorial reduction that allows reconstructing the shortest paths with only a few distance estimates. Using this reduction, we obtain the following: On weighted directed graphs with real edge weights in $[1,W]$, we can maintain $(1+\epsilon)$ approximate shortest paths in $\tilde{O}(n^{1.816}\epsilon^{-2} \log W)$ update and $\tilde{O}(n^{1.741} \epsilon^{-2} \log W)$ query time. This improves upon the approximate distance data structures from [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://v.d.Brand" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, Nanongkai, FOCS'19], which only returned a distance estimate, by matching their complexity and returning an approximate shortest path. On unweighted directed graphs, we can maintain exact shortest paths in $\tilde{O}(n^{1.823})$ update and $\tilde{O}(n^{1.747})$ query time. This improves upon [Bergamaschi, Henzinger, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://P.Gutenberg" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://V.Williams" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, Wein, SODA'21] who could report the path only against oblivious adversaries. We improve both their update and query time while also handling adaptive adversaries. On unweighted undirected graphs, our reduction holds not just against adaptive adversaries but is also deterministic. We maintain a $(1+\epsilon)$-approximate $st$-shortest path in $O(n^{1.529} / \epsilon^2)$ time per update, and $(1+\epsilon)$-approximate single source shortest paths in $O(n^{1.764} / \epsilon^2)$ time per update. Previous deterministic results by [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://v.d.Brand" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, Nazari, Forster, FOCS'22] could only maintain distance estimates but no paths.

Space-Efficient Fault-Tolerant Diameter Oracles

Abstract:We design $f$-edge fault-tolerant diameter oracles ($f$-FDOs). We preprocess a given graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, and a positive integer $f$, to construct a data structure that, when queried with a set $F$ of $|F| \leq f$ edges, returns the diameter of $G-F$. For a single failure ($f=1$) in an unweighted directed graph of diameter $D$, there exists an approximate FDO by Henzinger et al. [ITCS 2017] with stretch $(1+\varepsilon)$, constant query time, space $O(m)$, and a combinatorial preprocessing time of $\widetilde{O}(mn + n^{1.5} \sqrt{Dm/\varepsilon})$.We present an FDO for directed graphs with the same stretch, query time, and space. It has a preprocessing time of $\widetilde{O}(mn + n^2/\varepsilon)$. The preprocessing time nearly matches a conditional lower bound for combinatorial algorithms, also by Henzinger et al. With fast matrix multiplication, we achieve a preprocessing time of $\widetilde{O}(n^{2.5794} + n^2/\varepsilon)$. We further prove an information-theoretic lower bound showing that any FDO with stretch better than $3/2$ requires $\Omega(m)$ bits of space. For multiple failures ($f>1$) in undirected graphs with non-negative edge weights, we give an $f$-FDO with stretch $(f+2)$, query time $O(f^2\log^2{n})$, $\widetilde{O}(fn)$ space, and preprocessing time $\widetilde{O}(fm)$. We complement this with a lower bound excluding any finite stretch in $o(fn)$ space. We show that for unweighted graphs with polylogarithmic diameter and up to $f = o(\log n/ \log\log n)$ failures, one can swap approximation for query time and space. We present an exact combinatorial $f$-FDO with preprocessing time $mn^{1+o(1)}$, query time $n^{o(1)}$, and space $n^{2+o(1)}$. When using fast matrix multiplication instead, the preprocessing time can be improved to $n^{\omega+o(1)}$, where $\omega < 2.373$ is the matrix multiplication exponent.

Abstract:This paper considers a natural fault-tolerant shortest paths problem: for some constant integer $f$, given a directed weighted graph with no negative cycles and two fixed vertices $s$ and $t$, compute (either explicitly or implicitly) for every tuple of $f$ edges, the distance from $s$ to $t$ if these edges fail. We call this problem $f$-Fault Replacement Paths ($f$FRP). We first present an $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time algorithm for $2$FRP in $n$-vertex directed graphs with arbitrary edge weights and no negative cycles. As $2$FRP is a generalization of the well-studied Replacement Paths problem (RP) that asks for the distances between $s$ and $t$ for any single edge failure, $2$FRP is at least as hard as RP. Since RP in graphs with arbitrary weights is equivalent in a fine-grained sense to All-Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) [Vassilevska Williams and Williams FOCS'10, J.~ACM'18], $2$FRP is at least as hard as APSP, and thus a substantially subcubic time algorithm in the number of vertices for $2$FRP would be a breakthrough. Therefore, our algorithm in $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ time is conditionally nearly optimal. Our algorithm implies an $\tilde{O}(n^{f+1})$ time algorithm for the $f$FRP problem, giving the first improvement over the straightforward $O(n^{f+2})$ time algorithm. Then we focus on the restriction of $2$FRP to graphs with small integer weights bounded by $M$ in absolute values. Using fast rectangular matrix multiplication, we obtain a randomized algorithm that runs in $\tilde{O}(M^{2/3}n^{2.9153})$ time. This implies an improvement over our $\tilde{O}(n^{f+1})$ time arbitrary weight algorithm for all $f>1$. We also present a data structure variant of the algorithm that can trade off pre-processing and query time. In addition to the algebraic algorithms, we also give an $n^{8/3-o(1)}$ conditional lower bound for combinatorial $2$FRP algorithms in directed unweighted graphs.
