Abstract:China's modern wine industry began in 1892 when Changyu Wine Company was founded. After more than 130 years of development, China has formed 11 major wine regions with their own characteristics. The wine grape varieties of China are divided into three categories: international mainstream varieties, Chinese indigenous varieties, and varieties that can be used for both winemaking and table grape purposes. There are various types of wine produced in China, including sparkling wine, dry white, dry red, rose, ice wine, aromatized wine, and fortified wine. There are more than 1,680 wineries in China, whose production modes are categorized as "Chateau & Chateau wines" mode and "winery & brand wines" mode. The number of Chateau enterprises accounts for 80% of the total, and is developing fast. China's wine industry management organizations mainly include Ministry (departments, bureaus) of Agriculture, and the Ministry (departments, bureaus) of Industry and Information Technology. And the industry service organizations mainly include the China Alcoholic Drinks Association (Wine Branch), China National Food Industry Association (Wine Branch), and Grape and Wine Association or Wine Industry Development Service Center established by provinces and cities. Up to now, 12 sub-wine regions in China have obtained the certification of geographical indication protection. Chinese wine consuming markets are divided into five groups, with huge consumption potential, and the activity of consumer market remains the top of Asia. China's wine industry integrates the three industries of grape growing, wine making and wine consumption, tourism, and cultural promotion. Such growth is in accordance with the advancement of agriculture, rural areas, and ecological protection, exhibiting sustainable development with vigor and vitality.

Abstract:Opportunities and challenges on the Chinese wine industry were analyzed from politics and laws, manufacturing technology, consumption and international market environments. The wine producers and sellers should use fully of the policy advantage to develop wine industry. Wine sellers should do their best to foster the wine consumption market, to publicize the long history and resplendent culture of Chinese wine to consumers, and to guide the consumers to know the wine quality and help them set up the national wine consumption faith. The wine producers should ameliorate the management level, improve the wine quality, and promote the reputation and overall competition ability of Chinese wine on the international wine market.

Abstract:Purpose As the Chinese economy continues to develop, rising incomes for many people has meant significant shifts in consumption patterns. Over the past several years, per capita wine consumption in China has doubled. Although off a relatively low base, this still represents a significant sales volume. At the same time, the wine industry in the country has been undergoing restructuring with China now emerging as a major producer in world terms. These developments have been occurring at a time when the global wine industry has become increasingly globalised with so‐called new world (NW) suppliers challenging established European companies in existing and emerging wine markets. In this context, the paper aims to look at the possible threats as well as opportunities presented by China as a relatively new player in the market. Design/methodology/approach The paper reviews recent production and consumption trends in the world wine market. The changing patterns and growing volume of global wine trade is then assessed in light of the significant structural changes occurring in the industry in both importing and exporting countries. Recent developments in the wine market in China are identified and possible future implications for the world market are discussed. Findings NW wine producers are increasingly encroaching on traditional wine consuming markets and gaining advantage in new and growing markets. One result has been an expanding and increasingly competitive global market place. China, meanwhile, is seen to have considerable potential for growth in terms of wine consumption, while at the same time posing a possible threat to existing exporters in third markets. Originality/value Knowledge of emerging trends in wine markets and likely future developments are important for industry participants as well as policy makers in countries where wine is an increasingly important traded commodity. The paper provides an important contribution to the understanding of the global nature of the wine industry and the potential influence of China as both a major producer and consumer of wine.

Abstract:After more than 40 years of development, China’s wine regulatory system has been constantly improved, from half-base wine standards to pure-juice fermented wine standards, and then to the establishment of a relatively complete and mature industry-standard system with product and manufacturing standards as the core and other relevant industry standards as accessories. This advancement supports that the Chinese wine industry has emerged from New World wine countries. Nowadays, according to statistics from the International Organization of Vine and Wine, China is one of the top grape producers, wine consumers, and importers globally. Still, wine production has fallen in recent years, and the balance of wine import and export trade also shows a growing trade deficit. Faced with this problem, it is worth thinking about how to improve the regulatory system to help domestic wines overcome the difficulties. In this article, we first review the development process of China’s wine legal supervision system and summarize the situation of Chinese wine production, consumption, and trade in the past 20 years. Then we elaborate on China’s current legal framework for the wine industry consisting of a series of laws, regulations, and standards, and introduce domestic wine geographical indications. Finally, some suggestions are put forward on brand building, wine testing standards, and taxation of domestic wine. This review will help someone interested in Chinese wine to have a deeper understanding of the wine from a legal supervision system perspective and promote international cooperation and communication in the wine industry. In addition, it will also provide references for the establishment of wine regulations and standards in New World wine countries or regions.

Abstract:With the development of grape wine industry in China,wine production and consumption has been developed rapidly.In this study,through random questionnaire survey to different groups in five second-tier cities including Harbin,Tianjin,Xian,Wuhan and Urumqi,consumers' recognition of grape wine and their consumption propensity were known.We made brief analysis of the consumer groups of different social background and of different economic levels in this paper,which could provide useful reference for market promotion of grape wine in those second-tier cities.

Abstract:Wine is a product highly related with ecological environment, whose quality and characteristics are strongly affected by certain regional ecological resources. Hence, the ecological resources of grape decide the allocation situation and competitiven of wine industry. This article analyses the resource advantages of northwest wine industry in four aspects: ecological resources, technological resources, governmental and culture resources. Furthermore, this article analyses the developing status and existing problems in this area. Meanwhile, the author points out that the wine industry in northwest China have already entered strategic transition period from rapidly increasing period. Consequently, five approaches were proposed to enhance the competitiven of northwest wine industry. (1) Carry out scientific zoning project and establish new division region, concentrate the wineries to ecological regions and propel the industry to ecology and cluster direction. (2) Integrate the advantages of wine resource and build fine figure for enterprises in northwest. (3) Cultivate some leading corporations, strengthen their integration of ability and elevate the core competitiven of wine companies.(4) Strengthen local collaborative management and establish distinctive protection pattern of place of origin (5) Enhance international cooperation and communion; promote northwest wine industry to international market.

Abstract:Based on SCP framework,this paper makes an empirical analysis of the market structure,corporate behavior and industry performance of wine industry in China by industrial organization theory.It is found that wine industry of China belongs to highly concentrated oligopoly style and with higher performance.Through the conclusion of current structure-behavior-performance style,it proposes three constructive suggestions including adjusting industrial structure,optimizing the allocation of resources within industry and the strengthening of the marketing methods and brand building.

Abstract:【Objective】 Current situation and existing problems in China's grape and wine production were studied so as to explore the management model of sustainable development of vineyard and wine production and provide a theoretical basis for the sustainable development of grape and wine production. 【Method】 By employing the methods of field survey, case study, literature search and other methods, the paper summarized the grape and wine production and vineyard waste recycling and integration of eco-agriculture and other aspects. 【Result】 The concept of sustainable development was put forward and recommendations and directions for the healthy development of vineyard and wine production were proposed. 【Conclusion】 There are enormous challenges to the achievement of the goal of sustainable development of vineyard and wine production in China. We should make every effort to do our work well in order to make China’s wine industry to develop healthily, stably and continuously.

Abstract:The grape and wine industries develop rapidly. The clusters are considered as an effective form for grape and wine industries to improve their competitiveness. The research takes into consideration the geographical characteristics, including the topo-climate of the studied area and adopts GINI, CR5 and entropy indices to evaluate the overall and regional cluster levels and to analyse the long-term trends and the factors that influence the grape and wine industry clusters development. The results show that grape and wine industries have the characteristics of the cluster. The key factors which currently affect the development of grape and wine industry clusters are the elements of production and the demand conditions. The related industries and cluster structure, strategy, and competition also play an important role. Based on the evaluation results, the policy makers can issue valid policies for the grape and wine industries development.

Abstract:AbstractThe emergence of grape wine as a mainstream alcoholic beverage in China is relatively new. However, rapidly increasing wine consumption in China provides a significant trade potential for the United States and other wine exporting countries. This paper investigates the Chinese wine market using retailer data with a focus on imported wines. Supermarkets are identified as major retail outlets for foreign wines, and this paper uses data from a recent supermarket wine survey in China. Our data indicate that about half of our sample stock foreign wines. On average, 21 percent of total wine shelf space is allocated to foreign wines and larger stores are associated with larger shares of shelf space for foreign wines. Among foreign wines, French wine dominates. Of 31 supermarkets that sell foreign wines, 26 stores carry French wine, and in all but two of these stores more than half of the foreign wine shelf space is devoted to French wine. Australia, Chile, Italy and the United States follow in terms of number of stores carrying wines. Supermarkets in our sample allocate most of their shelf space to red wine for both domestic (93%) and foreign (82%) wines. The average median price for foreign wines (94 yuans per bottle) was more than double the equivalent price for domestic wines (42 yuans). (JEL Classification: N55, Q13, Q19)

Abstract:In recent years, China is undergoing a huge economic transformation since joining in World Trade Organization (WTO) and it has showed an increasing demand for wine. As China's wine consumption market is increasingly larger, the European market is becoming increasingly saturated, more and more wine foreign trade and foreign capital have chosen to enter China. Since 1996, China's wine imports have gradually increased and the trade deficit has significantly expanded. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the China's competiveness of wine in the international market. We mainly focus on the factors that most influenced the performance of imported wines from 1995 to 2014. The aim is to testify if the wine imports affect the China's own wine industry and examine which factors influence the Chinese wine industry most. This study uses Constant Market Share (CMS) econometric model to analyze the influencing factors of China's grain import fluctuation. The deep introduction on wine trade has important practical significance for the development of international trade and the improvement of industrial policies. The procured result of empirical model demonstrates that competitiveness is not always a predominant factor throughout the period, especially in wine industry.

Abstract:Purpose The study aims to give an overview of the development of the Chinese wine industry and trade between 1992 and 2019. Its importance is highlighted by the fact that China has become one of the world's largest wine-consuming markets with great growth potential and is now ranked among the top 10 largest global markets for wine. Design/methodology/approach To address Chinese wine industry competitiveness, revealed comparative advantage (RCA), relative trade advantage (RTA) and revealed competitiveness (RC) were calculated, based on the World Bank World Integrated Trade Solution database. Chinese wine market-related issues are analyzed by Porter's Five Forces in help of Market Line industry profile reports. Findings Results suggest that the Chinese wine market is relatively fragmented, with a concentrated food and beverages retail industry, strong buyer power and a moderate supplier power. The RCA calculated for the Chinese wine trade indicates that the share of exported bottled wine has become significant in the analyzed period. However, the RCA was perceivable just for bottled wines and only in the last analyzed period (2013–2019), whereas RTA and RC were negative for all periods revealing a comparative disadvantage. However, current market trends suggest that they will increase in the future. Research limitations/implications Data accuracy may affect these results because wine statistics may contain mislabeling. Moreover, China expanded its investments in many well-known wine regions all over the world, especially in Bordeaux, France. These, along with the significant re-export, could make it harder to interpret wine trade data because some part of the export is related to Chinese wineries outside of China. Practical implications Knowing the above-mentioned limitations, results should be interpreted with caution. However, high-quality wines can be identified as a niche market in China. Originality/value The study provided a detailed analysis of the Chinese wine industry and its competitiveness.

Abstract:The development pattern of grape wine industry in Asian countries was analyzed based on the data(including grape wine production,sales,and import and export trade in main Asian countries) from UN-Comtrade,WTO,OIV and IWSR.The evolution of grape wine industry competitiveness in these countries in recent ten years was also analyzed by use of industry competitive advantage theories(the competitiveness judged by international market share,trade competitiveness,significance comparative advantage index).Specifically,China mainland and Japan are the main grape wine-manufacturing,grape wine import,and grape wine sales countries in Asia but their grape wine industry competitiveness are comparatively weak.Israel and Turkey are the main grape wine export countries.Singapore and Hongkong(China) are brisk grape wine trade regions.Accordingly,China mainland should make full use of the role of Hongkong to enhance its grape wine competitiveness and export more grape wine to Japan,South Korea,Hongkong and Singapore by across-the-board tariff change and segmenting oversea market.
