Abstract:Reasonable simplification of finite element modeling of complex mechanical systems can reduce the amount of elements and nodes. The solution efficiency is improved in this way, which is of great economic significance in the practical engineering problem. Based on the modeling and simulation of a Conveyor System between Roving Frame and Spine Frame in automated textile production line, this paper investigates and proves the effectiveness of simplification of the complex mechanical system in the dominant finite element software – ANSYS. Results of static analysis of the simplified model agree well with the actual data, proving that the simplified solid-beam element model of the Conveyor System is reasonable. The results lay the foundation for the subsequent kinetic analysis and optimal design of complex mechanical system.

Abstract:Mass customization manufacturing (MCM) is the most advanced production mode. In its manufacturing process, the quality assurance system has its special requirements. The key to success is to design a linkage system that can bring together whatever modules are necessary - instantly, costlessly, seamlessly, and frictionlessly. This linkage system is the dynamic network, which can also be regarded as a "dynamic alliance" inside the enterprise. Then three FMS production line layouts are brought forward which are probably suitable for the dynamic network of MCM. These three types are the child production lines type, the C-shape lines type and the flower type, whose nature characteristics (the optimization of weak coupling relations) are also analyzed. To get the dynamic network, our quality systems have to be remodeled. Then using a grey genetic algorithm with the concept of quality loss, its model in MCMQA is built. Finally, the implementation of a flower type FMS dynamic network is given in an e-factory based on QUEST. And the work flow of it is also described here

Abstract:Modem manufacturing companies need Flexible Manufacturing Control Systems (FMCSs) to compete in today's unpredictable and ever-changing global markets. Traditional methodologies, however, can't meet the requirements of FMCS design. The function block (FB) concept in IEC61499 may provide a promising approach. In the present work, a FB based design pattern has been introduced to systematize the task of FMCS design in the IEC 61499 context, which is enhanced by adopting formal reference models in the design cycle. The FB based framework and engineering methodology have been proposed, together with requirements specification of CASE tools to facilitate the development process. An illustrative example using the proposed design pattern is presented. When properly applied, it can substantially reduce the time and cost of systems engineering, while enhancing the flexibility, modularity, extensibility, reusability and interoperability of FMCSs.

Abstract:Product platform modular architecture identification is the most critical process to support the incremental design of derivative instances. In order to solve the inflexibility in a single modular or scalable platform of complex mechatronics products, an integrated product modularisation scheme based on flow analysis, design structure matrix (DSM) and fuzzy clustering is proposed to compose a flexible platform. The definition of flexible platform is explained and internal mappings among functions, components and modules are set up. DSM for a kernel product is constructed by the flow analysis between the leaf components in design bill of material. An improved scaling by minimising a convex function algorithm is developed to transform the DSM to vectors in two-dimensional spaces, and the vectors are clustered using the traditional fuzzy c-means algorithm. Cluster centre components are selected to identify modular types with respective functional features. Thus, the internal relationships between components can be modelled with flow analysis-based DSM in a clear format, and the proposed DSM transformation and clustering algorithm identify the modular architecture for a flexible platform in a lower computational complexity. A numerical example and computational comparisons are also given to illustrate the proposed concept and the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Multidisciplinary collaborative simulation is a new paradigm to enhance the analysis of complex engineering systems more accurately in the systematic level, which enabling the interaction of subsystems models constructed by different CAE software tools in a time-synchronized and high fidelity way. This paper presents a modular method to implement the multidisciplinary collaborative simulation for complex engineering systems in a distributed environment. The modular decomposition is based on the configured subsystems in engineering intuition of corresponding disciplines. The global system is described by inter-connections between subsystems with block representation, thus the different simulation modules are interrelated with the corresponding inputs and outputs. The modular simulation approach allows for independent and parallel modeling of each subsystem and has the advantages of a better modularity. A component-based infrastructure is proposed to integrate the distributed, heterogeneous CAE tools. A modular simulation system which can support the integration of distributed simulation models at run-time is developed, involving the implementation technologies of interrelated modules, disciplinary model transformation and simulation time advancement. Modular modeling and simulation of a rolling stock is demonstrated as a typical case study. Numerical results of the modular simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach to multidisciplinary collaborative simulations for complex engineering systems.

Abstract:With the rapid development of intelligent manufacturing, the application of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) is becoming increasingly widespread in diverse production environments. This article aims to explore the thermal environment simulation and product visual design of flexible manufacturing systems based on robot collaboration, in response to the thermal environment problems faced in the manufacturing process. The research designed a manufacturing workshop architecture and implemented intelligent robot collaborative scheduling through modeling steps. The performance of robot operation and scheduling was evaluated to ensure the efficient operation of the system. In terms of thermal environment simulation and optimization control in manufacturing processes, a simulation testing system was established, and a temperature field reconstruction method was proposed. The temperature distribution characteristics under different operating conditions were revealed through numerical simulation results, providing effective guidance for thermal management. Finally, combined with robot-assisted technology, the visual design and manufacturing process of the product was analyzed, and the improvement effect of robots on visual design efficiency and accuracy was verified through system communication testing. The results indicate that flexible manufacturing systems based on robot collaboration can significantly improve the management and control of thermal environments, while enhancing the quality of product visual design, providing new ideas for further development in the field of intelligent manufacturing.

Abstract:Flexible modular design provides an approach to rapid response design of large mechanical products, such as hydraulic press machine. This implies a knowledge model to support the design process. This paper introduced the concept of flexible module, and proposed an object-oriented approach to modeling design knowledge, in which modules were represented as objects. The object architecture consists of three tiers: function module, flexible module and instance module. A frame-based object description language (FBODL) was proposed to represent multiple domain knowledge, in which the design knowledge module was termed as knowledge unit. The case based reasoning and frame based reasoning process were described. An example of knowledge base for modular hydraulic press machine design was given to illustrate the methodology.

Abstract:The design of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) is an essential but costly process. Although FMS design appears to be an excellent area for applying artificial intelligence (AI) and computer simulation techniques, to date there have been limited investigations on integrating AI with the modular simulation software available for FMS design. In this paper an integrated approach for the automatic design of FMS is reported, which uses simulation and multi-criteria decision-making techniques. The design process consists of the construction and testing of alternative designs using simulation methods. The selection of the most suitable design (based on the multi-criteria decision-making technique, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP)) is employed to analyze the output from the FMS simulation models. Intelligent tools (such as expert systems, fuzzy systems and neural networks), are developed for supporting the FMS design process. Active X technique is used for the actual integration of the FMS automatic design process and the intelligent decision support process.

Abstract:In this paper, a distributed scheduling approach of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is presented. A new class of Petri nets called networked time Petri nets (NTPN) for system modeling of networking environment is proposed. Abstract:Flexibility manufacturing system (FMS) and re-configurable manufacturing system (RMS) has gained more attention from the academy and industry. Mass customization manufacturing system (MCMS) synthesizes both features of the FMS and RMS. Firstly, the characteristics of MCMS, such as modularity, platform and scalability et al. are identified based on consideration of product family which is the results of the design for mass customization (DFMC). Secondly, MCMS inherits the features DFMC because of its disposing object: product family. The integrated process of DFMC and MCMS is researched and the concepts of product family are applied into the MCMS. Thirdly, the problem model of shop floor scheduling oriented to product family is put forwards by alteration of the traditional problem model. Finally, by accumulated the different precedence diagram of product member of the product family or different models into on single precedence diagram, the method transforms the balance problem of mixed model assembly as single model assembly line balancing problem. The key technologies of MCMS which uses product family as disposing object is researched and some advices have been presented for MCMS.

Abstract:For the complexity of manufacturing services business operation environment,the manufacturing service modularity theory model which included connotation and dynamic creation process of manufacturing service module was established.The dynamic creation of manufacturing service module was realized for laying basis of manufacturing service modularization.The catastrophe theory was used to construct the manufacturing service module products and service concept,and the manufacturing service module measure model and algorithm were established.On this basis,proposed based on the self organizing mapping network strategy of manufacturing service module dynamic clustering was proposed.Through the dynamic clustering of manufacturing service module,the validity of the proposed measurement model was verified,and the advantages of modeling based on neural network and modular technology were proved.

Abstract:Rapid shifts in consumer preferences have prompted enterprises to offer products in small quantities and various options. To meet market demands, enterprises must be able to research the development of modern conceptions of manufacturing systems which has revolved around new practical and scientific results that are able to meet the assumptions of focused flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) and the challenges of the Industry 4.0 philosophy. These FMSs, which incorporate automated facilities and computer control systems, play a crucial role in boosting the productivity of enterprises. In this study, the development trajectory and applications of FMS research were investigated. Scopus was used to collect and organize voluminous data, and main path analysis was used to identify the most relevant studies on FMS research. The results revealed that early FMS research concentrated on fundamental property analysis. After the flexibility and productivity of these systems were enhanced, the elimination of loading problems was discussed. Generally, FMS research has emphasized factor identification, flexibility evaluation, pre-simulation, and optimization. In this study, cluster analysis was used to identify five subfields: loading problem mitigation through scheduling, decision-making facilitation through simulation, FMS deadlock prevention, FMS flexibility measurement, and FMS composition. This study provides planning directions for industry, and the findings serve as a reference for manufacturing systems. The integrated analysis successfully determined the trajectory of FMS based technological development and applications as well as forecast the direction of future research.

Abstract:Today’s scenario of manufacturing activities is toward automation. To provide practical exposure and better understand, there is need of automated machines in the technical institutes. Due to financial& space constraints, most of the institutes is not having automated machines for the demonstration. This comprehensive review navigates the landscape of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS), dissecting scheduling rules, design, and simulation methodologies, and the integration of advanced technologies. The motor control systems, microcontroller applications, and robotic process automation contribute to a holistic understanding of FMS evolution. This synthesis serves as a roadmap for researchers and practitioners, fostering adaptability and responsiveness in modern manufacturing. FMS is the highest automation in manufacturing industry and work on group technology concept. In this project, the authors are planning to design and develop FMS Simulator for technical institute. This helps students to understand group technology concept, automated vehicle system, automated material handling system, working of automated transfer line, industrial robot and so on. This proposed initiative aligns with the broader goals of academics – to produce graduates who are not only well- versed in theoretical concepts but also equipped with the practical skills demanded by industry The utilization of an FMS with educational purposes started in the academic year 2011–2012 and still remains active. Here, the most illustrative FPs are expounded, and successful academic outcomes are reported. In addition, a set of initial considerations based on the experience acquired by the FMS is provided.

Abstract:The flexible manufacturing system (FMS) has attracted substantial amount of research effort during the last twenty years. Most of the studies address the issues of flexibility, productivity, cost, and so forth. The impact of flexible lines on product quality is less studied. This paper intends to address this issue by applying a Markov model to evaluate quality performance of a flexible manufacturing system. Closed expressions to calculate good part probability are derived and discussions to maintain high product quality are carried out. An example of flexible fixture in machining system is provided to illustrate the applicability of the method. The results of this study suggest a possible approach to investigate the impact of flexibility on product quality and, finally, with extensions and enrichment of the model, may lead to provide production engineers and managers a better understanding of the quality implications and to summarize some general guidelines of operation management in flexible manufacturing systems.

Abstract:This manuscript presents an approach to model, evaluate, and optimize a mixed-model carousel-based flexible manufacturing system (FMS). In the proposed FMS, a carousel-based layout is enclosed by different manufacturing cells and assembly cells, which are equipped with multiple multipurpose machines (undergoing planned breakdowns), robots and a conveyor for the production and assembly tasks. The FMS exhibits intra and inter-cellular routing flexibility allowing the parts to adopt different routes within cells and in between cells to ensure continuous production under planned resources failure conditions. For system modeling, a comprehensive hierarchical Colored Petri net (CPN) approach is used, and the result of several input variables has been revealed on the output indicators in particular cycle time, throughput, and work-in-process (WIP). Further, the design of experiment (DoE) and response surface methods (RSM) have been employed for system optimization. The cycle time and WIP responses have been minimized and throughput has been maximized.

Abstract:Virtual manufacturing (VM) has been proved in different industrial contexts as an effective technology to ensure competitivity and increase profit margins. This paper presents such a system named MEWS, short for module-based extensible integrated VM system. The system now contains 7 modules and owns good extensibility. One of the most important modules is assembling module. It has significant impact on the performance of the system. The adoption of hierarchical assembly model with discrete patches brings many benefits for the whole system as well as the assembling module itself. And the hybrid assembly sequence planning based on subassembly identification with human-interaction expands the planner's scope of application and enhances its robustness, while restricts human-interaction in hierarchical layers of the assembly model.

Abstract:To increase the manufacturing flexibility, manufacturing organizations are looking at flexible manufacturing system (FMS) as a viable alternative to enhance their competitive edge. There are, however, some factors which affect the flexibility of FMS. Fifteen factors are identified from the literature and found their evaluation by interpretive structural modeling (ISM), exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and graph theory matrix approach. But, Interpretation of the mutual relationship of factors is comparatively weak in ISM. Thus, an upgraded version of ISM i.e. Total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) methodology is used to develop the model and the mutual relationship of factors is identified in the TISM. This paper is an application of TISM to interpret the mutual relationship with the ISM using the tool of interpretive matrix and leads to evolving the framework and find out driving and the dependence power of factors, using fuzzy MICMAC analysis. The result shows that use of reconfigurable machine tool, automation and flexible fixturing have strong driving power and weak dependence power and are at the lowest levels in hierarchy in the TISM model. Hence, superior performance of FMS can be achieved by improving the driving factors of flexibility.
