Abstract:A substantial amount of transportation research has been gathered under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), suggesting multi-dimensional impacts of the BRI on the transportation industry. This study identifies research trends in the BRI to elicit key agendas for future research by comprehensively reviewing 58 journal articles and applying combined methods of inductive content analysis and co-occurrence network analysis. Findings indicate that the BRI positively impacts the transportation industry by (1) building logistics capacity (2) strengthening connectivity of transportation network (3) diversifying shipping routes of oil transportation (thus enhancing energy security) (4) promoting intermodal transportation. A unified framework and four observations are presented, illustrating strategic risks and operational challenges associated with the BRI. Principal research agendas and questions are proposed, directing future research towards reconfiguration of transportation networks and healthy competition in transportation service standards.

Abstract:It has been about 30 years since China adopted an open-up and reform policy for global competition and collaboration. This opening-up policy is accompanied by a spectacular growth of the country’s economy as well as visibility in the world’s scientific literature. Also China’ competitiveness in scientific research has grown, and is mirroring the development of the country’s economy. On the other hand, international collaboration of most countries dramatically increased during the last two decades and accompanied the growth of science in emerging economies. Thus the question arises of whether growth of competitiveness in research is accompanied by an intensification of collaboration in China as well. In the present study we analyse the dynamics and the national characteristics of China’s co-operation in a global context. We also study research profile and citation impact of international collaboration with respect to the corresponding domestic ‘standards’.

Abstract:International research collaboration is vital to the success of scientific development of China, and the identification of collaboration partners is the basic unit of collaboration. While many researchers have investigated international research collaboration using publication data, grant data have rarely been used. This paper explores the international research collaboration partners of China from a new data perspective, based on grant data. Using data from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) joint grants between China and 75 countries from 2006 to 2016, this study examines the collaboration partners in three aspects: overall collaboration activity, relative research effort, and collaboration groups of countries. Some interesting results are obtained as follows. Among 75 partners, the top 15 account for 95.42% of the total grants, but they are quite uneven in collaborating grant numbers and shares. The USA ranks far ahead of the others with a share of 53.27%, but China maintained a steady, approximately average collaborative effort with it from 2006 to 2016. China shows a growing preference for collaborating with Australia, the Netherlands, and Spain, while the preferences for Japan, Germany, and Sweden are the opposite. The collaborative number of grants among five collaboration groups varies greatly because of different features of constituents' countries. The G7 and Asia---Pacific both own more than 75% of all the grants, while the BRICS and "The Belt and Road" are relatively weak in research collaboration, but China has maintained a rising trend of collaboration with them over the past 11 years.

Abstract:The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has changed from a China-based initiative to an international consensus,and is becoming a platform for a growing number of countries in the world to explore new international economic governance mechanisms.Such a great change along with impressive achievements of BRI development has attracted academic attention from almost all disciplines except basic sciences,giving rise to huge literature.This paper will first explore data from China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database to summarize the characteristics of literature on BRI in general,and then review progress in research on major BRI topics related to geography.The paper finds:(1) the number of Chinese papers on BRI increased by 21 times in three years,from 1012 in 2014 to 21216 in 2017;(2) these papers cover various BRI-related topics but most of them are macroscopic and very general studies of BRI with a taste of public voices,implying that quality papers with deep academic studies are demanded to support the BRI development;(3) more frequently discussed topics are China's outward foreign direct investment,facilities connection,"going out",globalization,global economic govemance,community of shared destiny and internationalization of Renminbi;and (4) specific topics that are more deeply studied by geographers are connotation and discourse of BRI,geopolitical analysis of BRI,China-Europe Express Train,global strategic shipping pivot,model of China's outward foreign direct investment and overseas industrial parks,trade pattern and its impacts on economic growth of both China and its trade partners.Lastly,the paper suggests enhancing the discursive construction of BRI and studies of new BRI mechanisms as well as studies of countries involved in BRI,and promoting dialogues and collaborations between Chinese scholars and foreign scholars on BRI studies.
An Analysis of International Research Collaboration Based on Research Project Data.

Abstract:International research collaboration is an important form of Science and Technology (S&T) research and is attracting an increasing attention from researchers. While other studies have examined collaboration using publication and patent data, this paper examines funded research collaborative project data by selecting collaborators affiliated with units outside Mainland China. Among a total of 320,000 National Natural Science Fund of China (NSFC) projects conducted from 2006 to 2016, 17,624 projects involving international research collaboration were extracted and included in our empirical analysis. Using the bibliometric method, this paper quantitatively analyses three aspects of the collaboration currently happening in Mainland China: collaboration activity, relative research efforts, and subject field of collaboration. The results demonstrate that among all 78 countries and regions of collaboration, the top fifteen account for 94.73% of all projects on record. The USA is the most important collaboration partner, but the number of research collaborations between the US and Mainland China is around the average of the top fifteen partners. Collaborations with Australia and Netherlands show an increasing trend, while collaborations with Japan and Germany decreased from 2006 to 2016. Of eight fields included in this analysis, the highest number of collaboration projects deal with health sciences, information science or management science.

Abstract:This paper examined the coauthorship patterns in Chinese researchers’ cross-border research collaboration in the social sciences based on articles and reviews indexed in the Scopus database (2010–2019). We explored the evolution of coauthorship patterns by proportion of collaboration, year, research field, country/region, and research institution; additionally, the quality/impact of the coauthored publications was examined using four levels of paper quality (Q1–4), citations per paper, and FWCI. We found that collaboration between Chinese and international scholars is very common, and more than 40% of all papers published by Chinese scholars from 2010 to 2019 involved cross-border collaboration. The growth in collaboration was very steady over the past 10 years, increasing by an average of 20% per year. United States scholars are the most common research collaboration partners for Chinese scholars in the social sciences, followed by those in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. The field of psychology seeks the most collaboration, followed by economics and finance, business and management, and social issues. The percentage of Q1 papers increased from 36% in 2010 to 66% in 2019. Thus, in the past 10 years, Chinese scholars’ cross-border collaboration has grown extensively in terms of both quantity and impact.

Abstract:The Belt and Road Initiative is a major strategic decision made by Chinese.Taking a large number of literatures published in the ISI Web of Science database from 1978 to 2015 as data sources,this paper analyzes science and technology cooperation among China and countries in the B&R Initiative area,by bibliometrics,scientometrics and social network a-nalysis methods.The results show that,although the number of cooperation paper between China and countries in the B&R Initiative area is a growth trend,the quality and quantity of cooperation paper are relatively weak.Although the sub-j ect areas of cooperation papers are widely distributed,there are a lot of differences in research area.The leading position of China is still weak in three countries and multinational cooperation.In the high quality of international cooperation pa-per,the role of China and countries in the B&R Initiative area is not obvious.

Abstract:Based on data from the Web of Science, international collaboration between China and the UK in food and agriculture has been investigated from various perspectives. A new method for classifying cross- or multi-disciplinary fields has been created. The comparative study focuses on China's collaboration with selected countries including the USA, the UK, Germany and Japan. The newly proposed Integrated Impact Indicator (I3) is applied to evaluate publication impact. Although China's total publications dropped in 2010, its research productivity in food and agriculture nevertheless kept growing and international collaboration, reflected by the number of publications, also increased in an exponential way. The growth rate of China's internationally collaborated publications was lower than that of China's total publications. The USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, the UK and Germany are the top partners for Chinese researchers in this field. China-UK joint publications overall increased although their share in China's total internationally collaborated publications decreased. To China, collaborating with the USA, the UK and Germany, instead of Japan, seems to offer an option to raise impact. The rapidly growing number of international publications and impact of Chinese research in food and agriculture offers great collaboration potential for the country. The fact that the average impact of China-UK collaborative publications is higher than the domestic publications of either country implies that collaboration benefits both sides as has been found in several other studies.
China's Rising Leadership in Global Science

Abstract:Major shifts in the global system of science and technology are destabilizing the global status order and demonstrating the capacity for emerging countries like China and India to exert greater influence. In order to measure changes in the global scientific system, we develop a framework to assess the hierarchical position of countries in the international scientific collaboration network. Using a machine-learning model to identify the leaders of 5,966,623 scientific teams that collaborated across international borders, we show that Chinese scientists substantially narrowed their leadership deficit with scientists from the US, UK, and EU between 1990 and 2023 in absolute terms. Consequently, China and the US are on track to reach an equal number of team leaders engaged in bilateral collaborations between 2027 and 2028. Nevertheless, Chinese progress has been considerably slower in per-collaborator terms: after adjusting for the number of non-leaders from each country, our models do not predict parity between the US and China until after 2087. These dynamics extend to 11 critical technology areas central to ongoing diplomacy between the two nations, such AI, Semiconductors, and Advanced Communications, and to China's scientific leadership with respect to the European Union and the United Kingdom. Thus, while China's elite scientists are achieving leadership in the international scientific community, China's scientific enterprise continues to face developmental constraints. We conclude by reviewing several steps that Chinese science is taking to overcome these constraints, by increasing its engagement in scientific training and research in signatory nations to the Belt and Road Initiative.

Abstract:International research collaboration among global scientific powerhouses has exhibited a discernible trend towards convergence in recent decades. Notably, the US and China have significantly fortified their collaboration across diverse scientific disciplines, solidifying their status as a national-level duopoly in global scientific knowledge production. However, recent reports hint at a potential decline in collaboration between these two giants, even amidst the backdrop of advancing global convergence. Understanding the intricate interplay between cooperation and disparity within the US-China relationship is vital for both academia and policy leaders, as it provides invaluable insights into the potential future trajectory of global science collaboration. Despite its significance, there remains a noticeable dearth of quantitative evidence that adequately encapsulates the dynamism across disciplines and over time. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study delves into the evolving landscape of interaction between the US and China over recent decades. This investigation employs two approaches, one based on paper identifiers and the other on researcher identifiers, both obtained from bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex. From both approaches, our findings unveil the unique and dynamic nature of the US-China relationship, characterised by a collaboration pattern initially marked by rapid convergence, followed by a recent phase of divergence.

Abstract:Based on publications indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded ( SCIE ) of Thomson Reuters, we explored China–Germany collaboration in physics from perspectives including publication profiles, collaboration effect, as well as active institutions and active fields. We found that German researchers are more capable of publishing higher-quality papers than Chinese counterparts. Both China and Germany get benefit from collaboration in raising publication productivity. The collaboration helps improve Chinese researchers’ citation impact and capability of publishing in higher-quality journals. Research capacities of German institutions are more evenly distributed than Chinese counterparts. Chinese institutions that are most active in collaborating with German counterparts are mainly those in leading positions in China, whereas those in disadvantageous situation are still isolated from the international community.
Telling Our Own Story: A Bibliometrics Analysis of Mainland China’s Influence on Chinese Politics Research, 2001–2020

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis study conducted a bibliometric analysis of Chinese politics research from 2001 to 2020 (N = 11,285) using Social Sciences Citation Index data. The number of publications in the field by scholars from Mainland China surged in the past 20 years; however, their influence on academia remained limited. Chinese institutions serve as the major hubs of collaborative networks. Using structural topic models, we identified 25 research topics that can be categorized in three clusters. In the past 20 years, scholars from Mainland China steered the focus of Chinese politics by causing a reduction in the proportion of international relation topics and an increase in the proportion of political economy topics. Domestic politics topics had the most citations. Scholars from Mainland China have made contributions to better research methods in the field. This article is a comprehensive view of Chinese politics research using a tool that is rarely used by political scientists. It depicts how studies of Chinese politics influence academia from a bibliometrics perspective.

Abstract:Abstract The past 40 years have witnessed profound changes in the international competitiveness of Mainland China’s scientific research. Based on publication data from Chinese researchers in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) from the Web of Science (WoS), this study aims to provide a bird’s-eye view of how social science research in Mainland China has internationalized over the past four decades. The findings show that the number of social science articles published by Chinese authors in international journals has experienced a noticeable increase, and the collaboration networks of researchers from Mainland China have broadened, with the number of articles with a Chinese first author showing a strong upward trend. In addition, findings show that Chinese scholars are published in a wider range of journals, and there has been a steady increase in their appearance in higher impact journals (influenced in part by certain journals). Finally, different social science disciplines show various degrees of internationalization. This study provides a broad view from which to examine the internationalization process in Mainland China’s social science landscape in the last four decades, while also noting some of the possible explanations for these changes, thereby deepening our understanding of social science research stemming from the region.
A half-century of global collaboration in science and the 'Shrinking World'

Abstract:Recent decades have witnessed a dramatic shift in the cross-border collaboration mode of researchers, with countries increasingly cooperating and competing with one another. It is crucial for leaders in academia and policy to understand the full extent of international research collaboration, their country's position within it, and its evolution over time. However, evidence for such world-scale dynamism is still scarce. This paper provides unique evidence of how international collaboration clusters have formed and evolved over the past 50 years across various scientific publications, using data from OpenAlex, a large-scale Open Bibliometrics platform launched in 2022. We first examine how the global presence of top-tier countries has changed in 15 natural science disciplines over time, as measured by publication volumes and international collaboration rates. Notably, we observe that the US and China have been rapidly moving closer together for decades but began moving apart after 2019. We then perform a hierarchical clustering to analyse and visualise the international collaboration clusters for each discipline and period. Finally, we provide quantitative evidence of a `Shrinking World' of research collaboration at a global scale over the past half-century. Our results provide valuable insights into the big picture of past, present and future international collaboration.

Abstract:Even before the coronavirus pandemic, financial and geopolitical problems were weighing on the "New Silk Road": China's overall investment has been declining for years, key construction projects are unprofitable, partners in Eastern and Southeastern Europe are turning away, and environmentally harmful projects are increasingly meeting resistance. Since 2020, affluent democracies reinforce alternatives and the People's Republic also defers debt. In addition to the "BRI Green Partnership", Xi Jinping is therefore pushing the "Digital Silk Road" and "China Standards 2035", i. e. global technology and standardisation projects.

Abstract:Purpose/Significance] By using papers funded by NSFC in web of science database, this article reviews the overall trend and subjects’ distribution of international cooperation since NSFC’ s establishment, and provides suggestions for the implementation of “One Belt and One Road Initiatives”. [ Method/Process] From the comparative perspective, this article compares two countries’ cooperation and three countries’ cooperation, "north-south cooperation" and “One Belt and One Road” cooperation. We find that the number of "north-south cooperation" are more than that of“One Belt and One Road” cooperation, the two countries’ cooperation are more than that of three countries or multilateral cooperation, and the subjects of international cooperation are mainly concentrated in four subjects such as materials science. [ Result/Conclusion] It is suggested to make clear the strategic position of "science" for diplomacy, further innovate the existing international cooperation patterns, strengthen “One Belt and One Road” cooperation, establish the special research fund for“One Belt and One Road Initiatives”, promote three countries or multilateral cooperation, and especially promote cooperation in combina-tion with the characteristics of science and technology resources in “One Belt and One Road” countries.

Abstract:Building on the tradition, promises, and advances brought by the historical Silk Road, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched by the Chinese government in 2013, has a profound impact on international business and the established forms of international collaboration. Exploiting the advantages of liberalization of trade in goods, services, capital, and public procurement, BRI will benefit the Chinese economy. At the same time, it will prompt substantial changes in the field of international business, e.g., by means of fostering business to business (B2B) and peer to peer (P2P) collaboration. It will also influence patterns of Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI). Geography plays a role in BRI; geopolitics is also in the cards. Given the profound implications BRI is likely to generate in the fields of businesses, economy, society, and politics, it is imperative to frame and streamline the discussion to identify the key mechanisms and causal relationships that it induces. This is precisely what this Special Issue sought to do.

Networks of Research Collaboration in China: Evidence from Nanotechnology Publication Activities, 1990-2006

Abstract:The article shows there has been exponential growth overall in nano publication in China, there has been only linear growth in international publication collaboration. Potential explanations for this include increased internal incentives for publication in China in WoS-listed journals and for Chinese researchers to return home. However, there are quality differences between articles by author and collaboration type. Statistical testing indicates that internationally collaborated articles, articles by scholars in Chinese Academy of Science or top 10 Chinese universities, and articles involved Hong Kong scholars are more likely published in journals with high impact factors (IF), and receive high citations. These findings help to highlight China's emerging strengths in nanotechnology and the role of network relations in underpinning these developments.

Abstract:The Belt and Road Initiative presents a distinctive opportunity not only to bolster economic relations with partner nations but also to serve as a catalyst for regional economic growth. This study aims to delineate the advancement in research articles authored by various contributors, originating from diverse journals and countries, all of which are indexed in the SCOPUS database over the past two decades. The data is scrutinized employing VOS viewer software, enabling the visualization of co-occurrence maps among authors and countries. Additionally, the publications are also categorized based on the United Nations' 17 sustainable development goals. The findings elucidate that while the official inception of the concept was in 2013, the literature on One Belt One Road predates this period. However, a noticeable surge in publications occurred from 2014 onwards. Among the 6520 publications identified on the topic, 1613 are relevant to the domains of business, management, accounting, economics, econometrics, and finance. After refining the publication type to "article," the final tally stands at 1038 research articles published thus far. The study also discerns that a significant portion of these publications emanated from countries such as China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Notably, there exists a scarcity of literature from Belt and Road partner countries especially from Central Asia and South-South regions. Given their pivotal role as direct stakeholders, their insights could be invaluable in generating research with tangible real-world implications.
