Abstract:MOF-based sensors capable of effectively and stably detecting toxic species in water have attracted huge attention in terms of improving environmental monitoring levels and water quality. Combining the flexibility of structure and modifying of pore surface, a multiwalled divider installation (MWDI) strategy is proposed and used for property enhancement. We herein report three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-3 based on a C3 symmetry organic phosphonic ligand with topology increased from 3,6-connected to 3,8-connected. Among them, MOFs 1 and 2 with remaining binding sites and large pores display lower luminescence response to Co2+ than does the applying standard. Guided by the MWDI strategy, 3 with high rigid framework and triple molecular installer divided rhombic pore was achieved under top-down topological analysis as anticipated, which endows high sensitivity and rapid response to Co2+, contributed by the synergy from free activated sites and appropriate pore and molecular dividing effect. Particularly, the high stability of 3 in boiling solvent and acid/base solutions has been evidenced and explained by structural robustness and kinetic inertness. Moreover, 3 shows excellent detection ability toward trinitrophenol (TNP) over other aromatic analytes in water, attributing to the predomination of energy transfers. Of note is that the used framework can be in situ regenerated into a fresh one. That provides a promising strategy to prepare effective and economic luminescent sensors in a predictable way for property modification.

Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show the pre-eminence over other traditional fluorescent probes in the detection of water contaminants. Here, a novel lanthanide metal-organic framework Tb-MOF was successfully constructed by anchoring Tb3+ and 4,4'-(4-amino-1,2,4-triazol-3,5-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2atdbc) which exhibited high chemical stability and water stability. Furthermore, sensing experiments showed that Tb-MOF could be used as a multifunctional probe to detect Fe3+ (LOD = 5.01 × 10-7 mol L-1, Ksv = 1.28 × 104 L mol-1), Cr2O7 2− (LOD = 2.92 × 10-6 mol L-1, Ksv = 8454.37 L mol-1) and acetylacetone (LOD = 5.59 × 10-4 mol L-1, Ksv = 12.32 L mol-1) separately. PXRD, ICP-MS, IR and UV–vis spectra were conducted to explore the detection mechanisms. The experiments showed that the detection mechanism for Fe3+ was energy transfer and ion exchange, and the detection mechanisms for Cr2O7 2− and acetylacetone were energy transfer.

Abstract:Environmental issue related applications have globally surfaced as hottest areas of research, wherein luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) with functionalized pores put unique signature in real-time monitoring of multiple classes of toxic compounds, and overcome many of the challenges of conventional materials. We report a two-fold interpenetrated, mixed-ligand Cd(II)-organic framework ( CSMCRI-11 ) [Cd 1.5 ( L ) 2 ( bpy )(NO 3 )]·DMF·2H 2 O (CSMCRI = Central Salt and Marine Chemical Research Institute, H L = 4- (1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzoic acid, bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine) that exemplifies bipillar-layer structure with two different Cd(II) nodes, and displays notable robustness in diverse organic solvents and water. Intense luminescence signature of the activated MOF ( 11a ) is harnessed in extremely selective and fast responsive sensing of Fe 3+ ions in aqueous phase with notable quenching constant (1.91 × 10 4 M −1 ) and impressive 166 ppb limit of detection (LOD). The framework further serves as a highly discriminative and quick responsive scaffold for turn-off detection of two noxious oxo-anions (Cr 2 O 7 2− and CrO 4 2− ) in water, where individual quenching constants (CrO 4 2− : 1.46 × 10 4 M −1 ; Cr 2 O 7 2− : 2.18 × 10 4 M −1 ) and LOD values (CrO 4 2− : 179 ppb; Cr 2 O 7 2− : 114 ppb) rank among best sensory MOFs for aqueous phase detection of Cr(VI) species. It is imperative to stress the outstanding reusability of the MOF towards detection of all these aqueous pollutants, besides their vivid monitoring by colorimetric changes under UV-light. Mechanism of selective quenching is comprehensively investigated in light of absorption of the excitation/emission energy of the host framework by individual studied analyte.

Abstract:The luminescent metal-organic framework (LMOF) materials are highly desirable applied in detection of large variety of analytes by photoluminescence method. Here, two novel isostructural LMOFs, [EuDTTA(DMF)3]NO3 and [TbDTTA(DMF)3]NO3 (EuDTTA and TbDTTA) [H2DTTA = 2,5-di(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) terephthalic acid], have been successfully obtained. In the structure, binuclear secondary building units (SBUs) interconnected with ligands utilizing carboxylic acid groups extend to 2D layers, and triazole functional groups of the ligands point to the interior of the pore. Based on overlap mechanism, EuDTTA and TbDTTA demonstrated excellent selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ion in water. The quenching constants are 3.63 × 104 and 8.39 × 104 M−1 and the detection limits are 4.14 × 10−6 and 1.79 × 10−6 M. In addition, the LMOFs exhibit good structural stability and recyclability after several fluorescence detection tests. This work provides two new LMOF materials for the research in the field of detecting metal ions.

Abstract:Background: Iron ion (Fe3+) is essential for the environment and human health. Detecting Fe3+ in water is crucial, making high-performance detection a key objective. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks with abundant functional sites have been deemed a promising fluorescence sensor for Fe3+ detection. Currently, most metal-organic framework-based sensors for Fe3+ detection have cumbersome and time-consuming synthesis procedures and long detection times, which greatly limits their practical application. This study aims to construct a hybrid lanthanide metal-organic frameworks-based fluorescence sensor for Fe3+ detection that promises simple and rapid iron ion quantification in water. Results: A novel hybrid lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (ECTMNs) was synthesized in one step using a solvothermal method with only 4 h. The frameworks comprise two metal ions, cerium and europium, serving as metal centers, and 4,4,4,4-(Porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl) tetrakis (TCPP) as an organic ligand. With the addition of Fe3+, the host-guest reaction occurred between Fe3+ and ECTMNs probe, leading to the gradual fluorescence burst of ECTMNs probe. A strong linear correlation between ECTMNs fluorescence intensity and Fe3+ concentration (1-90 μM) makes it a reliable sensor for Fe3+ monitoring with a detection limit of 0.3 μM. Moreover, the method was used to analyze real samples (tap water and river water), showing good recoveries (92-98 %) and low relative standard deviations (3.96-6.11 %), making it a promising option for rapidly detecting Fe3+. Significance and novelty: A rapid synthesis protocol for hybrid lanthanide metal-organic frameworks is proposed in this study. The obtained ECTMNs exhibits good water solubility, high stability, and specificity for Fe3+. Based on ECTMNs, an innovative fluorescence sensor is established for selectively detecting Fe3+ in water, which is a simple operation method with a low detection limit and short sensing time. It provides a novel method for accurately and rapidly detecting Fe3+ in environmental pollution and water safety monitoring.

Abstract:Developing metal-organic framework (MOF)-based fluorescent probes for efficient detection and discrimination of polluting ions in groundwater is vital for environmental protection and human health. In this paper, we prepared two luminescence-active transition MOFs, namely, Zn-MOF and Cd-MOF, and conducted sensing experiments. The results show that they both exhibit multiple-target detection for Fe3+, Pb2+ and Cr(vi) with high sensitivity, good anti-interference ability and good recyclability even with different frameworks. In addition, Eu3+-incorporated samples, Eu3+@MOFs, with dual-emission have been fabricated via efficient encapsulation of Eu3+ ions into the MOF host. As expected, Eu3+@MOF hybrids also act as multi-target and self-calibrated probes to selectively detect Fe3+ and Cr(vi) ions. However, the quenching efficiencies of the original MOFs towards Fe3+ are higher than those of Eu3+@MOFs. Thus, we could differentiate Fe3+, Pb2+ and Cr(vi) ions by comparing the changes of fluorescence emission between Eu3+@MOFs and the original MOFs. The recognition mechanism may be attributed to the competitive energy absorption between MOFs or Eu3+@MOFs and the analytes.

Abstract:A six-coordinated 3D metal–organic framework (MOF), namely, [Co(BPDC)(3-bpdb)(H2O)2]n (1) (H2BPDC = 4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 3-bpdb = 1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene) was purposefully constructed and characterized by single-crystal XRD, IR, elemental analyses, PXRD, SEM, and TGA. Crystal structural analysis revealed that the complex consists of a cds-type three-fold interpenetrated framework. Hirshfeld surface analysis yielded details of the surface characteristics of 1. Significant O−H···O hydrogen bonding interactions, which could promote the stability of the framework, were found is extremely stable in aqueous solution and can resist acids and bases over an extensive pH range of 2–13. 1 shows brilliant fluorescent emission in the solid state and in aqueous solution. Fluorescence titration, cyclic, and anti-interference experiments demonstrated that 1 is an excellent probe for Fe3+, CrO42‒ and Cr2O72‒ in water. The Ksv values of 1 for Fe3+, CrO42‒, and Cr2O72‒, which were as high as 1.06 × 104 M−1, 1.50 × 104 M−1, and 1.16 × 104 M−1, respectively, were comparable with those of other sensors. The quenching mechanism of the novel probe was subsequently explained.

Abstract:A novel two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic framework (MOF), {[Cd(hsb-2)(2-obdc)]·2H2O}n (HSB-W7), has been assembled from Cd(II) and the mixed ligands of hydrogenated Schiff base hsb-2 (1,2-bis(4′-pyridylmethylamino)-ethane) and dicarboxylate 2-obdc (2-hydroxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) via the diffusion method under mild conditions. By changing the synthetic approach with the IISEM (instant in situ exfoliation method), nanoscale MOFs (nanoMOFs) HSB-W7-Ns, HSB-W7-Ns1 and HSB-W7-NR, have also been rapidly and massively fabricated from the MOF precursors in one-pot and one-step manner under aqueous solution. These as-synthesized nanoMOFs had the same 2D crystal structure; however, they displayed diverse nanostructures from 2D rectangular nanosheets with different sizes to 1D nanorods stacked in spheres. Such morphology variations were tuned just by adjusting the initial concentration of the precursors during their nanoMOFs synthesis. Because of the exceptional water stability and strong blue fluorescence, nanoMOFs HSB-W7-Ns, HSB-W7-Ns1 and HSB-W7-NR can serve as fluorescent sensors to selectively and sensitively detect the presence of Fe3+ ions in water. All the nanoMOFs showed much higher detection performance for Fe3+ ions than that of their bulk MOF crystals, of which the HSB-W7-Ns MOF nanosheets with elongated rectangle morphology was the best. Abstract:The reliable, convenient and rapid detection methods for various environmental pollutants using fluorescent sensors had attracted great attention. Herein, we reported the assembly and characterizations of two new fluorescent 3D lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), namely [Eu(PMBB)1.5(H2O)2] (Eu-MOF) and [Tb(PMBB)1.5(H2O)2] (Tb-MOF) (H2PMBB = 4,4′-((1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(oxy))dibenzoic acid). The fluorescent sensing results reveal that the two MOFs exhibit effective sensitivity toward Fe3+, Cr2O7 2−, cefixime (CFX), nitrofurazone (NFZ), imidacloprid (IMI) and nitenpyram (NTP) in aqueous medium. Notably, the Tb-MOF is more sensitive toward MnO4 − than Eu-MOF due to the enhanced fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect. This work provides the example for more effective designs to employ Ln-MOFs as fluorescent sensors for detection of environmental pollutants in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Two lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with similar structures have been synthesized through objective synthesis. The two compounds are both 2-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks. Topological analyses reveal that complexes 1 and 2 are 6-connected pcu net. In addition, both structures were embedded in uncoordinated nitrogen atoms. As the uncoordinated pyridine groups can be used as functional groups, we tested their sensing ability toward metal ions and small organic molecules. To our delight, fluorescence measurements show the two complexes can selectively and sensitively detect for Fe3+ ion and nitromethane, which suggests that the two Ln-MOFs are promising bifunctional luminescence sensor materials with sensing metal ions and small organic molecules.
Facilely Synthesized Eu3+ Post-Functionalized UiO-66-type Metal-Organic Framework for Rapid and Highly Selective Detection of Fe3+ in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:The detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution is a pertinent issue with implications in human health and environmental monitoring. As is known, Zr-based MOFs with UiO-66 topology exhibit extraordinary high thermal and chemical stability, making them excellent candidates for various applications. In this study, we have demonstrated a lanthanide functionalized MOF as a turn-off luminescent sensory material for the detection of Fe3+ in aqueous media. The proposed MOF, denoted as Eu3-VUiO-66(20), was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal reaction and followed Eu3+ post-functionalization. Luminescent investigations revealed the distinct quenching effect of Fe3+, with a fast response time within seconds. The results also demonstrated the excellent selectivity toward Fe3+ among a series of metal ions in aqueous solution and allowed a low detection limit of 12.8 mu M. This work developed a very promising strategy for the simple, accurate and instantaneous sensing of metal ions in practical applications. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:By reacting N,Nʹ-bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)oxalamide (H4BDPO) with d10 electronic configuration Cd2+ ion under solvothermal conditions to produce a two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Cd3(HBDPO)2(H2O)7]·4H2O}n (1), which has been further characterized by different methods including X-ray single-crystal diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The structural analyses of 1 indicate that two crystallographically independent Cd2+ ions are interconnected by partly deprotonated HBDPO3- ligands to generate a 2D (3,4)-connected topological layer, and the adjacent layers are further formed a 3D supramolecular structure by hydrogen bonding and π·· π stacking interactions. Luminescent results show that 1 can serve as a luminescent sensor for sensitively detecting Fe3+ and Cr2O72-/CrO42- ions based on the fluorescence quenching effect. More importantly, the high stability of 1 makes it suitable for the detection of Fe3+ and Cr2O72-/CrO42- ions in the natural water system.

Abstract:Lead and chromate/dichromate are widely used in manufacturing industry, but Pb(II) and Cr(VI) ions pose fatal threats to human health and the water ecological environment. It is thus highly desirable to develop novel and valid strategies for rapid detection and effective decontamination of these heavy metal ions. Design and assembly of luminescent Metal-Organic Framework (LMOFs) for effective recognition and removal of Pb(II) and/or Cr(VI) from water provide a feasible avenue to address this issue. Herein, a novel Cd(II)-MOF, [(Cd3L2)]·(solvent)x (labeled as compound 1) with bright blue fluorescence was assembled under the solvothermal reaction of triangular ligand 5'-(5-carboxy-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl)-[1,1':3′,1″-terphenyl]-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid (H3L) and Cd(NO3)2. Given that the unique structure features of 3D stacking framework, i. e. strong π···π conjugative effects of organic linkers, plentiful free imidazole N atoms and carboxyl O atoms, Cd-MOF of 1 was deliberately deployed as bifunctional platform to sense Pb(II)/Cr(VI) and photochemically reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Notably, 1 emits durable bright blue fluorescence and performs rapid quenching sense for Pb2+, Cr2O72− and CrO42−, with ultra low detection limits of 1.89, 4.83 and 2.84 ppb, respectively. Moreover, highly toxic Cr(VI) could be rapidly and thoroughly reduced to Cr(III) ions by 1 under the irradiation of mercury lamp, with reliable recycling ability. The possible photoluminescence, quenching and photocatalytic reduction mechanisms also were tentatively proposed.

Abstract:In today's society, heavy metal ions and antibiotic contaminants have caused great harm to water systems and human health. In this study, six isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks [Ln(H 3 imda) 2 (TPA)(H 2 O) 2 ](Tb for CUST-881 , Eu for CUST-882 , Dy for CUST-883 , Er for CUST-884 , Nd for CUST-885 , Sm for CUST-886 ) were constructed by selecting terephthalic acid (TPA) and 4,5-Imidazoledicarboxylic acid (H 3 imda) and lanthanide metal ions via solvethermal method. Among them, CUST-881 and CUST-882 can selectively detect Fe 3+ , Cr 2 O 7 2− , CrO 4 2 , and ceftriaxone sodium (CRO) in water systems and uric acid in urine. CUST-881 shows very low detection limits for these five substances. Furthermore, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to distinguish Fe 3+ , Cr 2 O 7 2− , CrO 4 2−, and CRO in water. To our knowledge, this is the first time that they have been able to be simultaneously distinguished. In addition, the possible sensing mechanism was studied through UV–visible spectroscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, and PXRD analysis. Furthermore, the probe also showed satisfactory repeatability and recovery when applied to UA samples that simulated urine. Based on the above results, lanthanide metal-organic frameworks have great potential for practical monitoring of contaminants in water environments.

Abstract:The contamination of water with fluoride (F−) is a source of mounting concern for global public health, and the removal of fluoride is quite important and challenging. In this study, two new lanthanide-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), {[Ce(L1)0.5(NO3)(H2O)2]·2DMF} (1) and [Eu3(L2)2(OH)(DMF)0.22(H2O)5.78]·guest (2) (H4L1 = 2,5-di(3′,5′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzene and H4L2 = 3,5-bis(isophthalic acid)-1H-1,2,4-triazole) are designed, synthesized and characterized. Both MOFs are tested for their adsorption capacity for fluoride ions and different uptake times from contaminated water. The investigation indicates that 1 displays a much higher adsorption capacity (103.95 mg g−1) and faster uptake rates (1.79 g mg−1 min−1) for fluoride ion than that of 2. The presented investigation is the first report in which lanthanide-based MOFs are used for the removal of fluoride ions from water.
