Abstract:We extend the AIGER format, as used in HWMCC, to a format that is suitable to define synthesis problems with safety specifications. We recap the original format and define one format for posing synthesis problems and one for solutions of synthesis problems in this setting.

Abstract:Automatic synthesis from a given specification automatically constructs correct implementation. This frees the user from the mundane implementation work, but still requires the specification. But is specifying easier than implementing? In this paper, we propose a user-friendly format to ease the specification work, in particularly, that of specifying partial implementations. Also, we provide scripts to convert specifications in the new format into the SYNTCOMP format, thus benefiting from state of the art synthesizers.

Abstract:A new chiral aggregate-based tool for asymmetric synthesis has been developed by taking advantage of chiral aggregates of GAP (Group-Assisted Purification) reagents, N-phosphonyl imines. This tool was proven to be successful in the asymmetric GAP synthesis of functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans by reacting salicyl N-phosphonyl imines with dialkyl bromomalonates in various cosolvent systems. The chiral induction can be controlled by differentiating between two asymmetric directions simply by changing the ratios of cosolvents which are commonly adopted in AIE (aggregation-induced emission) systems. The formation of chiral aggregates was witnessed by a new analytical tool—aggregation-induced polarization (AIP). The present synthetic method will be broadly extended for general organic synthesis, particularly, for asymmetric synthesis and asymmetric catalysis in the future.

Abstract:Designing synthetically accessible molecules and recommending analogs to unsynthesizable molecules are important problems for accelerating molecular discovery. We reconceptualize both problems using ideas from program synthesis. Drawing inspiration from syntax-guided synthesis approaches, we decouple the syntactic skeleton from the semantics of a synthetic tree to create a bilevel framework for reasoning about the combinatorial space of synthesis pathways. Given a molecule we aim to generate analogs for, we iteratively refine its skeletal characteristics via Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations over the space of syntactic skeletons. Given a black-box oracle to optimize, we formulate a joint design space over syntactic templates and molecular descriptors and introduce evolutionary algorithms that optimize both syntactic and semantic dimensions synergistically. Our key insight is that once the syntactic skeleton is set, we can amortize over the search complexity of deriving the program's semantics by training policies to fully utilize the fixed horizon Markov Decision Process imposed by the syntactic template. We demonstrate performance advantages of our bilevel framework for synthesizable analog generation and synthesizable molecule design. Notably, our approach offers the user explicit control over the resources required to perform synthesis and biases the design space towards simpler solutions, making it particularly promising for autonomous synthesis platforms.

Generative Artificial Intelligence for Navigating Synthesizable Chemical Space

Abstract:We introduce SynFormer, a generative modeling framework designed to efficiently explore and navigate synthesizable chemical space. Unlike traditional molecular generation approaches, we generate synthetic pathways for molecules to ensure that designs are synthetically tractable. By incorporating a scalable transformer architecture and a diffusion module for building block selection, SynFormer surpasses existing models in synthesizable molecular design. We demonstrate SynFormer's effectiveness in two key applications: (1) local chemical space exploration, where the model generates synthesizable analogs of a reference molecule, and (2) global chemical space exploration, where the model aims to identify optimal molecules according to a black-box property prediction oracle. Additionally, we demonstrate the scalability of our approach via the improvement in performance as more computational resources become available. With our code and trained models openly available, we hope that SynFormer will find use across applications in drug discovery and materials science.

SynthAI: A Multi Agent Generative AI Framework for Automated Modular HLS Design Generation

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce SynthAI, a new method for the automated creation of High-Level Synthesis (HLS) designs. SynthAI integrates ReAct agents, Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting, web search technologies, and the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework within a structured decision graph. This innovative approach enables the systematic decomposition of complex hardware design tasks into multiple stages and smaller, manageable modules. As a result, SynthAI produces synthesizable designs that closely adhere to user-specified design objectives and functional requirements. We further validate the capabilities of SynthAI through several case studies, highlighting its proficiency in generating complex, multi-module logic designs from a single initial prompt. Abstract:A new algorithm, namely a simulated annealing algorithm with multi-molecule (SAMM), is proposed. Besides inheriting the global convergence of the traditional simulated annealing algorithm (SA), SAMM can avoid the excessively time-consuming final iterations of SA, so it is more efficient and suitable for analog synthesis. Synthesis examples are also presented to demonstrate the validity and high efficiency of SAMM.

Abstract:We develop abstract learning frameworks for synthesis that embody the principles of the CEGIS (counterexample-guided inductive synthesis) algorithms in current literature. Our framework is based on iterative learning from a hypothesis space that captures synthesized objects, using counterexamples from an abstract sample space, and a concept space that abstractly defines the semantics of synthesis. We show that a variety of synthesis algorithms in current literature can be embedded in this general framework. We also exhibit three general recipes for convergent synthesis: the first two recipes based on finite spaces and Occam learners generalize all techniques of convergence used in existing engines, while the third, involving well-founded quasi-orderings, is new, and we instantiate it to concrete synthesis problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a synthesis algorithm for safety specifications described as circuits. Our algorithm is based on fixpoint computations, abstraction and refinement, it uses binary decision diagrams as symbolic data structure. We evaluate our tool on the benchmarks provided by the organizers of the synthesis competition organized within the SYNT'14 workshop.

Abstract:We report on the design of the third reactive synthesis competition (SYNTCOMP 2016), including a major extension of the competition to specifications in full linear temporal logic. We give a brief overview of the synthesis problem as considered in SYNTCOMP, and present the rules of the competition in 2016, as well as the ideas behind our design choices. Furthermore, we evaluate the recent changes to the competition based on the experiences with SYNTCOMP 2016. Finally, we give an outlook on further changes and extensions of the competition that are planned for the future.

In this paper, we discuss the question of how to deal with assumptions on environment behavior. We present four goals that we think should be met and review several different possibilities that have been proposed. We argue that each of them falls short in at least one aspect.

Inductive Predicate Synthesis Modulo Programs (Extended)

Abstract:A growing trend in program analysis is to encode verification conditions within the language of the input program. This simplifies the design of analysis tools by utilizing off-the-shelf verifiers, but makes communication with the underlying solver more challenging. Essentially, the analyzer operates at the level of input programs, whereas the solver operates at the level of problem encodings. To bridge this gap, the verifier must pass along proof-rules from the analyzer to the solver. For example, an analyzer for concurrent programs built on an inductive program verifier might need to declare Owicki-Gries style proof-rules for the underlying solver. Each such proof-rule further specifies how a program should be verified, meaning that the problem of passing proof-rules is a form of invariant synthesis. Similarly, many program analysis tasks reduce to the synthesis of pure, loop-free Boolean functions (i.e., predicates), relative to a program. From this observation, we propose Inductive Predicate Synthesis Modulo Programs (IPS-MP) which extends high-level languages with minimal synthesis features to guide analysis. In IPS-MP, unknown predicates appear under assume and assert statements, acting as specifications modulo the program semantics. Existing synthesis solvers are inefficient at IPS-MP as they target more general problems. In this paper, we show that IPS-MP admits an efficient solution in the Boolean case, despite being generally undecidable. Moreover, we show that IPS-MP reduces to the satisfiability of constrained Horn clauses, which is less general than existing synthesis problems, yet expressive enough to encode verification tasks. We provide reductions from challenging verification tasks -- such as parameterized model checking -- to IPS-MP. We realize these reductions with an efficient IPS-MP-solver based on SeaHorn, and describe a application to smart-contract verification.

Abstract:Compositional synthesis relies on the discovery of assumptions, i.e., restrictions on the behavior of the remainder of the system that allow a component to realize its specification. In order to avoid losing valid solutions, these assumptions should be necessary conditions for realizability. However, because there are typically many different behaviors that realize the same specification, necessary behavioral restrictions often do not exist. In this paper, we introduce a new class of assumptions for compositional synthesis, which we call information flow assumptions. Such assumptions capture an essential aspect of distributed computing, because components often need to act upon information that is available only in other components. The presence of a certain flow of information is therefore often a necessary requirement, while the actual behavior that establishes the information flow is unconstrained. In contrast to behavioral assumptions, which are properties of individual computation traces, information flow assumptions are hyperproperties, i.e., properties of sets of traces. We present a method for the automatic derivation of information-flow assumptions from a temporal logic specification of the system. We then provide a technique for the automatic synthesis of component implementations based on information flow assumptions. This provides a new compositional approach to the synthesis of distributed systems. We report on encouraging first experiments with the approach, carried out with the BoSyHyper synthesis tool.

Information Flow Guided Synthesis with Unbounded Communication

Abstract:Information flow guided synthesis is a compositional approach to the automated construction of distributed systems where the assumptions between the components are captured as information-flow requirements. Information-flow requirements are hyperproperties that ensure that if a component needs to act on certain information that is only available in other components, then this information will be passed to the component. We present a new method for the automatic construction of information flow assumptions from specifications given as temporal safety properties. The new method is the first approach to handle situations where the required amount of information is unbounded. For example, we can analyze communication protocols that transmit a stream of messages in a potentially infinite loop. We show that component implementations can then, in principle, be constructed from the information flow requirements using a synthesis tool for hyperproperties. We additionally present a more practical synthesis technique that constructs the components using efficient methods for standard synthesis from trace properties. We have implemented the technique in the prototype tool FlowSy, which outperforms previous approaches to distributed synthesis on several benchmarks.

Abstract:We present the Temporal Logic Synthesis Format (TLSF), a high-level format to describe synthesis problems via Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). The format builds upon standard LTL, but additionally allows to use high level constructs, such as sets and functions, to provide a compact and human readable representation. Furthermore, the format allows to identify parameters of a specification such that a single description can be used to define a family of problems. We also present a tool to automatically translate the format into plain LTL, which then can be used for synthesis by a solver. The tool also allows to adjust parameters of the specification and to apply standard transformations on the resulting formula.

Constrained synthesis planning with disconnection-aware transformer and multi-objective search

Abstract:Designing synthesis routes with shared intermediates for a set of target compounds is a common task in drug discovery. Multistep retrosynthesis tools such as AiZynthFinder are frequently used by chemists to generate possible routes. Although these tools can find solved routes for a majority of target compounds, they may not generate routes which comply with specific bond constraints. Such bond constraints could be defined in the project to obtain synthesis routes with common intermediates for the set of compounds. Here, we present a novel retrosynthesis approach which aims to generate routes in the feasible region defined by these constraints. The constraints are divided into bonds to break and bonds to freeze. First, we introduce a filter in the search which discards any reaction that violates the frozen bond constraints. Second, we benchmark four possible strategies for breaking selected bonds in the search for synthetic routes. We show that a combination of disconnection-aware transformer and multi-objective search generates routes which satisfy bond constraints for more targets in the PaRoutes dataset compared to the standard search (75.57% vs. 54.80%). Finally, we apply the strategy on a set of drug compounds to exemplify a real-world scenario. Using our novel approach, we can build a short joint synthesis route which satisfies the given bond constraints and covers eight of the ten compounds.

ASAC: A Benchmark for Algorithm Synthesis

Abstract:In this paper, we present the first benchmark for algorithm synthesis from formal specification: ASAC. ASAC consists of 136 tasks covering a wide range of algorithmic paradigms and various difficulty levels. Each task includes a formal specification and an efficiency requirement, and the program synthesizer is expected to produce a program that satisfies the formal specification and meets the efficiency requirement. Our evaluation of two state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches in ASAC shows that ASAC exposes new challenges for future research on program synthesis. Abstract:The standard hardware design flow involves: (a) design of an integrated circuit using a hardware description language, (b) extensive functional and formal verification, and (c) logical synthesis. However, the above-mentioned processes consume significant effort and time. An alternative approach is to use a formal specification language as a high-level hardware description language and synthesize hardware from formal specifications. Our work is a case study of the synthesis of the widely and industrially used AMBA AHB protocol from formal specifications. Bloem et al. presented the first formal specifications for the AMBA AHB Arbiter and synthesized the AHB Arbiter circuit. However, in the first formal specification some important assumptions were missing. Our contributions are as follows: (a) We present detailed formal specifications for the AHB Arbiter incorporating the missing details, and obtain significant improvements in the synthesis results (both with respect to the number of gates in the synthesized circuit and with respect to the time taken to synthesize the circuit), and (b) we present formal specifications to generate compact circuits for the remaining two main components of AMBA AHB, namely, AHB Master and AHB Slave. Thus with systematic description we are able to automatically and completely synthesize an important and widely used industrial protocol.

Abstract:Program synthesis is the task of automatically generating expressions that satisfy a given specification. Program synthesis techniques have been used to automate the generation of loop invariants in code, synthesize function summaries, and to assist programmers via program sketching. Syntax-guided synthesis has been a successful paradigm in this area, however, one area where the state-of-the-art solvers fall-down is reasoning about potentially unbounded data structures such as arrays where both specifications and solutions may require quantifiers and quantifier alternations. We present SynRG, a synthesis algorithm based on restricting the synthesis problem to generate candidate solutions with quantification over a finite domain, and then generalizing these candidate solutions to the unrestricted domain of the original specification. We report experiments on invariant synthesis benchmarks and on program sketching benchmarks taken from the Java StringUtils class and show that our technique can synthesize expressions out of reach of all existing solvers.

Abstract:The classical formulation of the program-synthesis problem is to find a program that meets a correctness specification given as a logical formula. Syntax-guided synthesis (SyGuS) is a standardized format for specifying the correctness specification with a syntactic template that constrains the space of allowed implementations. The input to SyGuS consists of a background theory, a semantic correctness specification for the desired program given by a logical formula, and a syntactic set of candidate implementations given by a grammar. The computational problem then is to find an implementation from the set of candidate expressions that satisfies the specification in the given theory. The formulation of the problem builds on SMT-LIB. This document defines the SyGuS 2.1 standard, which is intended to be used as the standard input and output language for solvers targeting the syntax-guided synthesis problem. It borrows many concepts and language constructs from the standard format for Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solvers, the SMT-LIB 2.6 standard.
