Abstract:The detection of expressions of sentiment in online text has become a popular Natural Language Processing application. The task is commonly defined as identifying the words or phrases in a given fragment of text in which the reader understands that the author expresses some person's positive, negative, or perhaps neutral attitude toward a topic. These four elements-expression words, attitude holder, topic, and attitude value-have evolved with hardly any discussion in the literature about their foundation or nature. Specifically, the use of two (or three) attitude values is far more simplistic than many examples of real language show. In this paper we ask: where do sentiments come from? We focus on two basic sources of human attitude-the holder's non-logical/emotional preferences and the fulfillment of the holder's goals. After exploring each source we provide a notional algorithm sketch and examples of how sentiment systems could provide richer and more realistic accounts of sentiment in text.

Abstract:Memory and data capacities double approximately every two years and, apparently, the Web is following the same rule. User-generated contents, in particular, are an ever-growing source of opinion and sentiments which are continuously spread worldwide through blogs, wikis, fora, chats and social networks. The distillation of knowledge from such sources is a key factor for applications in fields such as commerce, tourism, education and health, but the quantity and the nature of the contents they generate make it a very difficult task. Due to such challenging research problems and wide variety of practical applications, opinion mining and sentiment analysis have become very active research areas in the last decade. Our understanding and knowledge of the problem and its solution are still limited as natural language understanding techniques are still pretty weak. Most of current research in sentiment analysis, in fact, merely relies on machine learning algorithms. Such algorithms, despite most of them being very effective, produce no human understandable results such that we know little about how and why output values are obtained. All such approaches, moreover, rely on syntactical structure of text, which is far from the way human mind processes natural language. Next-generation opinion mining systems should employ techniques capable to better grasp the conceptual rules that govern sentiment and the clues that can convey these concepts from realization to verbalization in the human mind.

Abstract:The exponential growth of the Social Web is virally infecting more and more critical business processes such as customer support and satisfaction, brand and reputation management, product design and marketing. Because of this global trend, web users already evolved from the era of social relationships, in which they began to get connected and started to share contents, to the era of social functionality, in which they started using social networks as the main platform for communication and dissemination of information. Today, web users are going through the era of social colonization, in which every experience on the Web can be social (e.g., Facebook Like button), and are getting ready for the era of social context, in which web contents will be highly targeted and personalized. The final stage of such Social Web evolution is the so called era of social commerce, in which communities will define future products and services. In such context, the research field of sentiment analysis, which has already been rapidly growing in the last decade, is destined to become more and more important for Web and business dynamics. To this end, the Second International Workshop on Issues of Sentiment Discovery and Opinion Mining (WISDOM 2013: http://sentic.net/wisdom) aims to explore how the wisdom of the crowds is affecting (and will affect) the evolution of the Web and of businesses gravitating around it. In particular, the workshop explores two different stages of sentiment analysis: the former focusing on the identification of opinionated text over the Web, the latter focusing on the classification of such text either in terms of polarity detection or emotion recognition.

Abstract:The current research is focusing on the area of Opinion Mining also called as sentiment analysis due to sheer volume of opinion rich web resources such as discussion forums, review sites and blogs are available in digital form. One important problem in sentiment analysis of product reviews is to produce summary of opinions based on product features. We have surveyed and analyzed in this paper, various techniques that have been developed for the key tasks of opinion mining. We have provided an overall picture of what is involved in developing a software system for opinion mining on the basis of our survey and analysis.

Abstract:Our day-to-day life has always been influenced by what people think. Ideas and opinions of others have always affected our own opinions. The explosion of Web 2.0 has led to increased activity in Podcasting, Blogging, Tagging, Contributing to RSS, Social Bookmarking, and Social Networking. As a result there has been an eruption of interest in people to mine these vast resources of data for opinions. Sentiment Analysis or Opinion Mining is the computational treatment of opinions, sentiments and subjectivity of text. In this report, we take a look at the various challenges and applications of Sentiment Analysis. We will discuss in details various approaches to perform a computational treatment of sentiments and opinions. Various supervised or data-driven techniques to SA like Na\"ive Byes, Maximum Entropy, SVM, and Voted Perceptrons will be discussed and their strengths and drawbacks will be touched upon. We will also see a new dimension of analyzing sentiments by Cognitive Psychology mainly through the work of Janyce Wiebe, where we will see ways to detect subjectivity, perspective in narrative and understanding the discourse structure. We will also study some specific topics in Sentiment Analysis and the contemporary works in those areas.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis AKA opinion mining is one of the most widely used NLP applications to identify human intentions from their reviews. In the education sector, opinion mining is used to listen to student opinions and enhance their learning–teaching practices pedagogically. With advancements in sentiment annotation techniques and AI methodologies, student comments can be labelled with their sentiment orientation without much human intervention. In this review article, (1) we consider the role of emotional analysis in education from four levels: document level, sentence level, entity level, and aspect level, (2) sentiment annotation techniques including lexicon-based and corpus-based approaches for unsupervised annotations are explored, (3) the role of AI in sentiment analysis with methodologies like machine learning, deep learning, and transformers are discussed, (4) the impact of sentiment analysis on educational procedures to enhance pedagogy, decision-making, and evaluation are presented. Educational institutions have been widely invested to build sentiment analysis tools and process their student feedback to draw their opinions and insights. Applications built on sentiment analysis of student feedback are reviewed in this study. Challenges in sentiment analysis like multi-polarity, polysemous, negation words, and opinion spam detection are explored and their trends in the research space are discussed. The future directions of sentiment analysis in education are discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, Internet provides a unique opportunity to express and spread public sentiment, which makes the web contents becoming the largest information source of public sentiment. Since web public sentiment reflects people’s attitude to society and politics, the public opinion’s orientation is significant to decision-makers. In this paper, we utilize VSM (vector space model) to present the text orientation of web information and offer data-mining approaches to analyze public opinion’s orientation, which can assist decision-makers to steer social information and guide the web public sentiment. To achieve the goal of text orientation analysis, two ways are proposed. Firstly, a novel text orientation analysis method is described to analyze the orientation of original web postings and their replies. Secondly, an improved single-pass clustering algorithm is introduced to cluster the subject of web discussion and discover the hot topics.We also construct a prototype system, named WPSAS (web public sentiment analysis system), as experimental platform to validate the presented methodology. The experimental results show that our methods are effective and efficient.

Abstract:Recent years have brought a significant growth in the volume of research in sentiment analysis, mostly on highly subjective text types (movie or product reviews). The main difference these texts have with news articles is that their target is clearly defined and unique across the text. Following different annotation efforts and the analysis of the issues encountered, we realised that news opinion mining is different from that of other text types. We identified three subtasks that need to be addressed: definition of the target; separation of the good and bad news content from the good and bad sentiment expressed on the target; and analysis of clearly marked opinion that is expressed explicitly, not needing interpretation or the use of world knowledge. Furthermore, we distinguish three different possible views on newspaper articles - author, reader and text, which have to be addressed differently at the time of analysing sentiment. Given these definitions, we present work on mining opinions about entities in English language news, in which (a) we test the relative suitability of various sentiment dictionaries and (b) we attempt to separate positive or negative opinion from good or bad news. In the experiments described here, we tested whether or not subject domain-defining vocabulary should be ignored. Results showed that this idea is more appropriate in the context of news opinion mining and that the approaches taking this into consideration produce a better performance.

Abstract:<p>Sentiment analysis (SA), also called Opinion Mining (OM) is the task of extracting and analyzing people's opinions, sentiments, attitudes, perceptions, etc., towards different entities such as topics, products, and services. The fast evolution of Internet-based applications like websites, social networks, and blogs, leads people to generate enormous heaps of opinions and reviews about products, services, and day-to-day activities. Sentiment analysis poses as a powerful tool for businesses, governments, and researchers to extract and analyze public mood and views, gain business insight, and make better decisions. This paper presents a complete study of sentiment analysis approaches, challenges, and trends, to give researchers a global survey on sentiment analysis and its related fields. The paper presents the applications of sentiment analysis and describes the generic process of this task. Then, it reviews, compares, and investigates the used approaches to have an exhaustive view of their advantages and drawbacks. The challenges of sentiment analysis are discussed next to clarify future directions.</p>

Abstract:Microblogging platforms have experienced great growth during the last few years. Opinions are valuable for many applications. Most researches concentrate on classifying microblog posts into different polarities, which cannot provide concise opinion information. This paper presents an opinion mining system that extracts aspect related opinions for some specific event from Microblogs. Our approach first extracts aspect words, then cluster them as aspects of the opinions. Opinions are extracted by a CRF model that trained from automatically labeled data. Abstract:It is a widely accepted truth there are great values embedded in the opinion and sentiment expressed by users on social media platforms. Nowadays, it is quite common for researchers or engineers to adopt opinion mining and sentiment analysis techniques to extract enriched emotional information from online text content. However, given the characteristics of social media, such as dynamic, short, informal and context dependent, applying general opinion mining and sentiment analysis techniques originally designed for static long text corpora would lead to serious bias. In many applications, even research that not specialized in opinion mining and sentiment analysis, this problem is ignored unintentionally or unintentionally. Such ignorance may contribute the failure of some designs or unexplainable results. In this paper, we summarized these challenges in social media sentiment analysis. Some potential solutions for these challenges are also discussed. Finally, we also introduced several state-of-the-art techniques in social media sentiment analysis.

Abstract:On the Internet, online microblogging and social networks have experienced tremendous growth. Millions of individuals share opinions on social networking platforms including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Microblogging sites. Millions of individuals express their thoughts on social platforms namely Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and microblogging sites. As user‐generated content is growing to a huge extent on the internet, the analysis, extraction identification and classification of opinion and sentiment polarity of different aspects has now become a challenging issue in sentiment analysis. In sentiment analysis, aspect level opinion mining, opinion spam review detection, extraction and representation of most relevant accessed data from the user‐generated data is a difficult process. The word vector representation using existing deep learning techniques affects the performance in aspect level opinion mining. Spammers propagate false opinion for payment exchange, which leads to degradation of the financial growth, business, and fame of the organization. To overcome the limitations aspect level opinion mining is used to recognize sentiment and polarity of aspects in the specified text. This work presents various input feature vectors of deep learning approaches aiming to improve performance in aspect level opinion mining. Next, three meta‐heuristic algorithms with k‐means clustering approach for classification of opinion spam reviews on social media transit tweets is presented. The proposed approaches are evaluated and compared with other existing approaches as well as other benchmark datasets namely Restaurant and Amazon reviews.

Abstract:With the prevalence of social media and online forum, opinion mining, aiming at analyzing and discovering the latent opinion in user-generated reviews on the Internet, has become a hot research topic. This survey focuses on two important subtasks in this field, stance detection and product aspect mining, both of which can be formalized as the problem of the triple 'target, aspect, opinion' extraction. In this paper, we first introduce the general framework of opinion mining and describe the evaluation metrics. Then, the methodologies for stance detection on different sources, such as online forum and social media are discussed. After that, approaches for product aspect mining are categorized into three main groups which are corpus level aspect extraction, corpus level aspect, and opinion mining, and document level aspect and opinion mining based on the processing units and tasks. And then we discuss the challenges and possible solutions. Finally, we summarize the evolving trend of the reviewed methodologies and conclude the survey.

Abstract:Social media sentiment analysis (also known as opinion mining) which aims to extract people’s opinions, attitudes and emotions from social networks has become a research hotspot. Conventional sentiment analysis concentrates primarily on the textual content. However, multimedia sentiment analysis has begun to receive attention since visual content such as images and videos is becoming a new medium for self-expression in social networks. In order to provide a reference for the researchers in this active area, we give an overview of this topic and describe the algorithms of sentiment analysis and opinion mining for social multimedia. Having conducted a brief review on textual sentiment analysis for social media, we present a comprehensive survey of visual sentiment analysis on the basis of a thorough investigation of the existing literature. We further give a summary of existing studies on multimodal sentiment analysis which combines multiple media channels. We finally summarize the existing benchmark datasets in this area, and discuss the future research trends and potential directions for multimedia sentiment analysis. This survey covers 100 articles during 2008–2018 and categorizes existing studies according to the approaches they adopt.

Abstract:Microblogs have become quick and easy online information sharing platforms with the explosive growth of online social media. Weibo, a Twitter-like microblog service in China, is characterized by timeliness and interactivity. A Weibo message carries the user's views and sentiments, particularly forms a fission-like spreading structure while being retweeted. Such structure accelerates information diffusion, and reflects different topics and opinions as well. However, current researches mainly focus on sentiment classification, which neither efficiently combine tree-like retweeting structure nor analyze opinion evolutions with a holistic view. In light of this, we build an opinion descriptive model, and propose an opinion mining method based on this model. With a microblog-oriented sentiment lexicon being constructed, a lexicon-based sentiment orientation analysis algorithm is designed to classify sentiments. Finally, we design and implement a prototype which can mine opinions with respect to retweeting tree structures and retweeting comments.

Abstract:With the advent of information exploration over the years, the most important thing to make the business decision is to consider the opinion of the people. Sometimes the opinions which are transformed to sentiments plays a vital role in the aforementioned areas. The opinion of the people is shared by the e-commerce, and social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, blogs, forums, etc. The opinion is categorized into positive, negative, and neutral opinion. To extract the sentiments, opinion there are different approaches available in the literature such as Support Vector Machine, Naïve Bayes, Neural Networks, lexicon based approaches, etc. In this paper, it is aimed at comparing different types of machine learning approaches, such as supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised learning algorithms, which are useful to extract the various opinions over the Net. It is further surveyed to understand various performance measures when the extracted opinions were transformed to sentiments.

Abstract:As the type and the number of such venues increase, automated analysis of sentiment on textual resources has become an essential data mining task. In this paper, we investigate the problem of mining opinions on the collection of informal short texts. Both positive and negative sentiment strength of texts are detected. We focus on a non-English language that has few resources for text mining. This approach would help enhance the sentiment analysis in languages where a list of opinionated words does not exist. We propose a new method projects the text into dense and low dimensional feature vectors according to the sentiment strength of the words. We detect the mixture of positive and negative sentiments on a multi-variant scale. Empirical evaluation of the proposed framework on Turkish tweets shows that our approach gets good results for opinion mining.

There are many research works in opinion mining. However, all current methods are focusing on how to handling the opinion mining for English language, Chinese, Japanese and so on.
