Abstract:Methane CH4, ethane C2H6, ethylene C2H4, and acetylene C2H2 are typical and effective fault characteristic gases for oil-immersed power transformers. Metal oxide semiconductor SnO2 based gas sensors had been well applied in on-line monitoring of these gases. In this study, nano-SnO2 powers were prepared by the sol-gel method, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), respectively. Side heated sensor with the synthesized samples was fabricated, and its gas sensing properties to CH4, C2H6, C2H4 and C2H2 were measured. Based on the framework of Density Function Theory (DFT), SnO2 surface model, gas molecular models and adsorption models were built, respectively. A first principles calculation using Cambridge Sequential Total Energy Package (CASTEP) program was performed, and the total energies, electronic structures and adsorption properties were investigated in detail. Theoretical calculations provides a qualitative explanation to the sensing properties of the fabricated SnO2 based sensor to various fault characteristic gases extracted from power transformers, namely CH4, C2H6, C2H4 and C2H2.
