Abstract:We represent a novel image enhancement algorithm which is based on nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT). We first use normalized multiscale products and NSCT coefficients to represent the difference between edges in inter-scale correlations of NSCT, and use both the products and the coefficients to distinguish different types of edges and to give different gains respectively. There are three steps in our algorithm: (1) we estimate the noise to determine the noise threshold, the enhancement threshold and the strong edge threshold. (2) In each scale, we separate the gain of a certain point into two parts: one is the gain yielded from NSCT coefficient, which denotes the information in one single scale; the other is obtained from the ratio of normalized multiscale product to NSCT coefficient, which denotes the inter-scale correlations of this point. (3) Based on our experiments, we put the gain peak at a certain ratio to generate the multiscale gain. The final enhancement function is a combination of the gains in the single scale and in the multiple scales, in which the multiscale gain is treated as a compensation for the single scale gain. Simulation results show that the image enhancement effect by our method is satisfactory.
