Abstract:While research on computer hackers has a long history, most of the studies in the past three decades have been qualitative and anecdotal in nature. The question why young computer talents become computer hackers remains. Based on the results of a case study, we conducted a survey based empirical study using the scenario based research methodology. Statistical analyses show that three primary factors contribute to the likelihood of talents becoming hackers: moral beliefs, self-control, and time spent on computer games vs. sports activities. Our results indicate that individuals who have strong moral beliefs against hacking activities, strong abilities to control temper, and spend more time in sports than on computer games are less likely to be involved in computer hacking activities. The significant implications of these findings for scholars, educators, and policy makers are discussed and future research directions are explored.
Why College Students Commit Computer Hacks: Insights from a Cross Culture Analysis.

Abstract:Computer hacking committed by young adults has become an epidemic that threatens the social and economic prosperity brought by information technology around the world. In this study, we extend previous studies on computer hackers with a cross cultural approach by comparing sources of influence on computer hacking in two countries: China and the United States. This comparative study yielded some significant insights about the contributing factors to the computer hacking phenomenon in these two countries. While some factors are consistent, others are distinctly different, across the two samples. We find that moral beliefs about computer hacking are the most consistent antidote against computer hacking intentions among the Chinese and the American college students. On the other hand, we find that playing computer games (team sports) significantly increases (decreases) the intention to computer hacking in the Chinese college students, but has no significant effect on the American college students. In addition, we find that hypotheses based on routine activity and selfcontrol theories are modestly supported by the two samples; however, each sample supports distinct dimensions of the two theories. Hofstede’s national cultural framework provides salient explanations to these differences in the two samples.

Abstract:Poor software quality can adversely affect application security by increasing the potential for a malicious breach of a system. Because computer security and cybersecurity are becoming such relevant topics for practicing software engineers, the need for educational opportunities in this area is steadily increasing. Universities and colleges have recognized this, and have started to offer programs in cybersecurity. At face value, these new programs may not appear controversial, but developing their curriculum requires answering a complex ethical question: Should programs teach hacking to their students? Even though there are different types of hackers, media reports of cybersecurity incidents tend to reserve the "hacker" label for cyber criminals, which overlooks the value in hacking (and, by extension, teaching students to hack). This article examines the full spectrum of hacking behavior, as well as arguments for and against including hacking in education programs, and recommends that hacking skills be considered an essential component of an education and practice in software quality assurance.

Abstract:In accordance with a similar growth in information technology, computer hacking has become a pervasive issue as a form of crime worldwide in recent years. Self-control theory and social bonding theory have frequently been employed to explain various types of crimes, but rarely to explore computer hacking. Drawing from Gottfredson and Hirschi’s (1990) self-control theory and Hirschi’s (1969) social bonding theory, the purpose of this study is to empirically examine the suitability of these two theories in explaining juvenile computer hacking offenses. The self-report survey data utilized for the present study was derived from middle school and high school students in the United States, Russia, Spain, Venezuela, France, Hungary, Germany, and Poland. The current study hypothesizes that hackers’ self-control and social bonding are significant predictors for the commission of computer hacking offenses. The findings of this study provide strong support for Gottfredson and Hirschi’s (1990) self-control theory. In addition, the findings can be interpreted as partially supportive of Hirschi’s (1969) social bonding theory. The authors conclude with a discussion on policy implications.

Abstract:We investigate the open issue of the limit of computer intelligence. A person’s subjective self is his/her inner ego. Reasoning logically, we disprove the statement “a digital robot can be programmed to have subjective self” by showing that “subjective self” is unitary and un-duplicable while computer codes are duplicable; therefore, subjective self-identity, “I”, cannot be achieved on electronic computers through programming. The potential of electronic computers is not unlimited. A digital robot can be super-intelligent and super-capable in near future, but it will have no subjective self-identity and self-consciousness. Humanoid robots will not be a “species” as humans. How to deal with such a “species” is now an imminent and critical issue for our humanity.

Flow-based model of computer hackers' motivation

Abstract:Hackers' psychology, widely discussed in the media, is almost entirely unexplored by psychologists. In this study, hackers' motivation is investigated, using the flow paradigm. Flow is likely to motivate hackers, according to views expressed by researchers and by hackers themselves. Taken as granted that hackers experience flow, it was hypothesized that flow increases with the increase of hackers' competence in IT use. Self-selected subjects were recruited on specialized web sources; 457 hackers filled out a web questionnaire. Competence in IT use, specific flow experience, and demographic data were questioned. An on-line research was administered within the Russian-speaking community (though one third of Ss are non-residents of Russian Federation); since hacking seems to be international, the belief is expressed that the results are universal. The hypothesis is not confirmed: flow motivation characterizes the least and the most competent hackers, and the members of an intermediate group, that is, averagely competent Ss report the "flow crisis"-no (or less) flow experience. Two differing strategies of task choice were self-reported by Ss: a step-by-step increase of the difficulty of choices leads to a match of challenges and skills (and to preserving the flow experience); putting choices irrespective of the likelihood of solution leads to a "flow crisis." The findings give productive hints on processes of hackers' motivational development. The flow-based model of computer hackers' motivation was developed. It combines both empirically confirmed and theoretically possible ways of hackers' "professional" growth.

Abstract:This paper considers two different classes of computer hackers, with a special emphasis on disparate motivations of hacking. Hackers’ psychology widely discussed in the media is almost entirely unexplored by psychologists. In this study, hackers’ and crackers’ motivation is investigated, using the study of values scale. One hundred and fourteen participants completed our online research instrument. The study of values and demographic data were questioned. Participants were categorized as hackers and crackers through their responses on two items questioned in the demographic datasheet. Results indicated that hackers were found higher on the motivations of seeking knowledge, aesthetic sense, social interactions, and mysticism while crackers were found more motivated due to their economical and political interests. Findings suggested that hackers hack for the thrill of learning and gathering information to gain intelligence. Hackers hack to make society a better place to live. Compared to hackers, crackers are incapable of normal social interactions, and their hacking is based on the motivations of getting money and power.

Abstract:This study draws on a synergy of Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies to scrutinize the portrayal of hackers in China Daily and The New York Times in the 21st century (2001–2020), primarily revolving around the main social actors and targets in hacking. This study demonstrates that both media share a positive transformation of the image-building of hackers in the 21st century. Besides, countries are salient social actors in hacker media discourse and the two media differ in their ways of constructing them. The New York Times tends to have a negative other-representation and categorical otherness of specific countries through such discursive strategies as negative other-representation and group categorization, whereas China Daily is prone to insist on opposing the US hacking allegations in a defensive manner. Regarding major targets, China Daily highlights government websites whereas The New York Times emphasizes government websites, officials’ emails, large technology companies, and election infrastructure. The analysis shows that the two media’s different ways of framing hackers are underpinned by the ideologies behind them and the Chinese and US socio-political landscapes. This study can provide insights into how hacker discourse in media is represented in the 21st century and how national identities are constructed in the media representations of hackers.

Abstract:Chinese hacker communities are of interest to cybersecurity researchers and investigators. When examining Chinese hacker communities, researchers and investigators face many challenges, including understanding the Chinese language, detecting variations in topic evolution, and identifying key hackers with their specialty areas. Therefore, we are motivated to develop a framework for analyzing key hackers and emerging threats in Chinese hacker communities. Specifically, we develop a set of topic models for extracting popular topics, tracking topic evolution, and identifying key hackers with their specialty topics. We applied our framework to 19 major Chinese hacker communities. As a result, we identified five major popular topics, including trading, fraud prevention & identification, calling for cooperation, casual chat, and monetizing. Moreover, we found several trends related to new communication channels, new stolen cards of interest, and new operating mechanism. Further, we also found the key hackers in each extracted area. Our work contributes to the cybersecurity literature by providing an advanced and scalable framework for analyzing Chinese hacker communities.

Abstract:Research on physical, that is, violent, terror attacks and extremism has increased dramatically over the last decade. The growth of the Internet and computer technology has also led to concern over the use of cyberattacks by ideologically motivated offenders to cause harm and further their political and social agendas. There is, however, a lack of empirical research on cyber-attackers limiting our knowledge of the factors that affect their behavior. This study addresses this empirical gap through a qualitative analysis of 10 interviews conducted with ideologically motivated Turkish computer hackers. The findings demonstrated that Turkish hackers motivated by an ideological agenda reflected the larger values of the hacker subculture, though the targets for their attacks were shaped directly by religious or political beliefs. We conclude by discussing in depth our findings and implications for counterterror and cybersecurity policy and practice.

Abstract:Due to the growth of computer technology in business, learning computer programming is necessary for university students regardless of their background in information technology. Self-efficacy is an important factor in students’ learning performance. However, little research has been done on the antecedents of self-efficacy when students learn computer programming. Thus, we proposed a framework based on self-efficacy theory and surveyed to test the hypotheses. The results showed that the quality of lectures, reciprocal help from classmates, and positive emotions had positive effects on self-efficacy, but course value did not. Teachers’ lectures and the cooperation between students were crucial in learning computer programming. Also, students with positive emotions showed a degree of self-efficacy when facing the challenges in learning how to code.

Abstract:Research has demonstrated that hacker subculture – like many other tech-oriented communities – is disproportionately composed of men. While prior attempts have been made to explain this disparity, few, if any, explore the role of subculture in this gendered divide. Drawing from feminist theories, subcultural theory, and cultural criminology, this theoretical analysis examines the intersection of gender, social structure, hegemony, situated action, and subculture to argue that hacker subculture is (1) male-dominated and androcentric, (2) mired in language, like meritocratic rhetoric, which masks inequity, and (3) conducive to forms of sexual harassment and gendered exclusion. Implications for hacking research and subcultural theory are discussed throughout.

Abstract:Criminal expertise plays a crucial role in the choices offenders make when committing a crime, including their modus operandi. However, our knowledge about criminal decision making online remains limited. Drawing on insights from cyber security, we conceptualize the cybercrime commission process as the sequence of phases of the cyber kill chain that offenders go through. We assume that offenders who follow the sequence consecutively use the most efficient hacking method. Building upon the expertise paradigm, we hypothesize that participants with greater hacking experience and IT skills undertake more efficient hacks. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed data from 69 computer security and software engineering students who were invited to hack a vulnerable website in a computer lab equipped with monitoring software, which allowed to collect objective behavioral measures. Additionally, we collected individual measures regarding hacking expertise through an online questionnaire. After quantitatively measuring efficiency using sequence analysis, a regression model showed that the expertise paradigm may also apply to hackers. We discuss the implications of our novel research for the study of offender decision-making processes more broadly.
