Abstract:The emergence of virtualized computing and converged networks has the potential to revolutionize industrial automation systems, offering unprecedented levels of flexibility and scalability that were previously unattainable with traditional infrastructure. Therefore, cloud-fog automation (CFA) platforms are becoming key players not only in coordinating the production task management in upper-layer applications but also in handling real-time control and monitoring by the edge devices. In this article, we discuss how cloud/fog-based virtualization and converged communication networks can allow for flexible deployment of automation use cases and evaluate the impacts introduced by the less deterministic infrastructure from the perspective of control. Four representative use cases are studied using our in-house developed CFA platform to demonstrate the smart coordination of automation in a variety of real-life prototypes. Moreover, the capabilities of the commercial off-the-shelf virtualized computing and converged networks are characterized, which confirms the CFA platform as an essential part of the future industrial infrastructure for hosting heterogenous control applications is not a “daydream”.

Abstract:As an emerging technology and business paradigm, Cloud Computing has taken commercial computing by storm. Cloud computing platforms provide easy access to a company’s high-performance computing and storage infrastructure through web services. With cloud computing, the aim is to hide the complexity of IT infrastructure management from its users. At the same time, cloud computing platforms provide massive scalability, 99.999% reliability, high performance, and specifiable configurability. These capabilities are provided at relatively low costs compared to dedicated infrastructures. This article gives a quick introduction to cloud storage. It covers the key technologies in Cloud Computing and Cloud Storage, several different types of clouds services, and describes the advantages and challenges of Cloud Storage after the introduction of the Cloud Storage reference model.

Abstract:In the AI-for-science era, scientific computing scenarios such as concurrent learning and high-throughput computing demand a new generation of infrastructure that supports scalable computing resources and automated workflow management on both cloud and high-performance supercomputers. Here we introduce Dflow, an open-source Python toolkit designed for scientists to construct workflows with simple programming interfaces. It enables complex process control and task scheduling across a distributed, heterogeneous infrastructure, leveraging containers and Kubernetes for flexibility. Dflow is highly observable and can scale to thousands of concurrent nodes per workflow, enhancing the efficiency of complex scientific computing tasks. The basic unit in Dflow, known as an Operation (OP), is reusable and independent of the underlying infrastructure or context. Dozens of workflow projects have been developed based on Dflow, spanning a wide range of projects. We anticipate that the reusability of Dflow and its components will encourage more scientists to publish their workflows and OP components. These components, in turn, can be adapted and reused in various contexts, fostering greater collaboration and innovation in the scientific community.

A Cloud Computing Application in Land Resources Information Management

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of land resources information management, this research firstly designs a land resources cloud computing platform. Four main strategies, namely job scheduling, cloud cache pool, Map Reduce and resources-oriented techniques are then discussed in details. A prototype system named Land Cloud is then introduced, followed by two experiments which are conducted to test the performance of the system. The results show enough evidence of the usefulness of cloud computing services in managing land resources data.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce vFlow - A framework for rapid designing of batch processing applications for Cloud Computing environment. vFlow batch processing system extracts tasks from the vPlans diagrams, systematically captures the dynamics in batch application management tasks, and translates them to Cloud environment API, named vDocuments, that can be used to execute batch processing applications. vDocuments do not only enable the complete execution of low-level configuration management tasks, but also allow the construction of more sophisticated tasks, while imposing additional reasoning logic to realize batch application management objectives in Cloud environments. We present the design of the vFlow framework and illustrate its utility by presenting the implementation of several sophisticated operational tasks.

Abstract:Traditional High-Performance Computing (HPC) based big-data applications are usually constrained by having to move large amount of data to compute facilities for real-time processing purpose. Modern HPC systems, represented by High-Throughput Computing (HTC) and Many-Task Computing (MTC) platforms, on the other hand, intend to achieve the long-held dream of moving compute to data instead. This kind of data-aware scheduling, typically represented by Hadoop MapReduce, has been successfully implemented in its Map Phase, whereby each Map Task is sent out to the compute node where the corresponding input data chunk is located. However, Hadoop MapReduce limits itself to a one-map-to-one-reduce framework, leading to difficulties for handling complex logics, such as pipelines or workflows. Meanwhile, it lacks built-in support and optimization when the input datasets are shared among multiple applications and/or jobs. The performance can be improved significantly when the knowledge of the shared and frequently accessed data is taken into scheduling decisions.To enhance the capability of managing workflow in modern HPC system, this paper presents CloudFlow, a Hadoop MapReduce based programming model for cloud workflow applications. CloudFlow is built on top of MapReduce, which is proposed not only being data aware, but also shared-data aware. It identifies the most frequently shared data, from both task-level and job-level, replicates them to each compute node for data locality purposes. It also supports user-defined multiple Map- and Reduce functions, allowing users to orchestrate the required data-flow logic. Mathematically, we prove the correctness of the whole scheduling framework by performing theoretical analysis. Further more, experimental evaluation also shows that the execution runtime speedup exceeds 4X compared to traditional MapReduce implementation with a manageable time overhead. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:We report the discovery of a new SNR in the \ros All-Sky-Survey data. The SNR has a nearly circular shape with a diameter of about 15 arcmin. The surface brightness is rather uniform over the remnant. The observed interstellar absorption suggests a distance of about 1.8$^{+1.4}_{-0.8}$ kpc. The X-ray emission appears to be of thermal origin with a plasma temperature of about 10$^7$ K. The Sedov model leads to an age of only 1800 years. We find no spectral evidence of non-thermal emission in the center of the remnant. The two most likely explanations for the centrally filled structure are evaporation of shock heated clouds in the interior of the remnant or a reverse shock heating the ejecta of the SNR explosion.

Abstract:Cloud computing has draw tremendous attentions from all levels of business and IT industries. Companies like Salesforce and Amazon are on the center of the stage and seem to have demonstrated a successful story on cloud computing. All hardware vendors, including HP and Dell are force to jump on the cloud computing bandwagon as well as enterprise software players, like Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and SAP, are also rush into the seizing battle of this new wave of opportunities. However, is there really an opportunity for new comers, and if so, what is it? Or it is just the same old IT challenges but need to be dealt within a new context by existing vendors? For research community, what are the challenging areas need to be addressed in order to deliver practical values on cloud computing? In this talk, let’s step back from the cloud and review the essential issues when we pursue the cloud computing.
