Abstract:The Internet is undergoing a tremendous change towards the globalized computing environment. Due to the open, dynamic and uncontrollable natures of the Internet, software running in the Internet computing environment has some new features, which bring challenges to current software technologies in terms of software model, software operating platform, software engineering approaches and software quality. Researchers in China have proposed the term “Internetware” to present the emerging software paradigm. Sponsored by the National Basic Research 973 Program, several research practices have been done on the Internetware in the past decade. This paper summarizes the progress and status of the Internetware researches. A technical solution framework for the Internetware paradigm is proposed from four aspects: the Internetware software model defines what the Internetware is to be ; the Internetware middleware determines how to run the Internetware applications ; the engineering methodology determines how to develop the Internetware applications ; the Internetware quality assurance determines how well the Internetware applications can perform . The paper also discusses the ongoing research issues and future trends of Internetware.

Abstract:Internetware is envisioned as a new software paradigm for resource integration and sharing in the open, dynamic and autonomous network environment. In this paper we discuss our visions and explorations of this new paradigm, with focus placed on the methodological perspective. A set of enabling techniques on flexible coordination of autonomous services, automatic adaptation to changing environment and trust management-based assurance of dependability are proposed to help the development of Internetware applications.

Abstract:The Internet, once a network of networks, has become not only the platform of choice for delivering services to increasingly mobile users, but also the connective tissue between people, information and things. Almost all new and popular computing and application paradigms were born in the Internet, or at least motivated by it, including Web 2.0, Social Networking, Mobile Internet, Cloud Computing, Internet of things, and big data. Software has played a central part in the evolution of the Internet. The open, dynamic, evolving environment of Internet computing continues to demand new software technologies in order to realize its rapid paradigm shifts. These new software technologies need to meet an increasing number of requirements; they need to be autonomous, situational, evolvable, cooperative, emergent, trustworthy and so on.

Abstract:The vision of "Internet as a computer" motivates many technical trends, like pervasive computing, grid computing, service computing and recently, cloud computing, as well as some business trends, like modern service industry, digital economy and smarter planet. Such evolutionary changes demand that the software system running on the open and dynamic Internet has to be autonomous, context-sensitive, continuous-reactive, evolutionary, and proactive, and the software entities dispersed on distributed nodes over the Internet will be turned into self-contained, autonomous and adaptive. Thus like the information Web, i.e. World Wide Web, these Internet-based software entities will constitute a software Web. There will be a new software paradigm induced by Internet. A portmanteau term "Internetware" is used to denote the future software-web. An Internetware system will be able to perceive the changes of open and dynamic environment, respond to changes, and exhibit context-aware, adaptive and trustworthy behaviors. The mission of Internetware may challenge many aspects of software technologies, from operating platforms, programming models, to engineering approaches, etc.

Abstract:While culture being the software controlling human mind, computer software development becomes one of the most creative activities that human undertake since the civilisation began. The only limitation in software creation is human imagination, and that limit is often self-imposed. The “Internetware”, referring to a software paradigm, aims to satisfy the need of human kind using Internet as an integrated development and execution platform. Such software systems are composed of entities distributed through the Internetwork, allowing connections that would be impossible or difficult to make otherwise. One of the tasks for the Internetware is to accommodate creativity, to understand the general settings of creative design process and to develop programs that can enhance creativity without necessarily being creative themselves. Therefore, it can be summarized that a development environment needs to be built to best support software creation process of six steps including searching, ideating, specifying, coding, testing and evolving. An E-Health application eco-system is used to illustrate the proposed development process model.

Abstract:P2P network is not only open, dynamic and varied, but also more controllable. It provides an effective way of sharing resources in the large-scale heterogeneous network, which decreases the difficulties of autonomy and evolvement for internetware. An internetware model based on P2P network topology was proposed. The model includes the software architecture description, controlling unit and self-adaptive component repository. The internetware self-adaptability relies mainly on the controlling unit and the component repository. In the self-adaptive component repository, the component replica wares, component reuse formats and replica ware testing statuses are introduced to increase the self-adaptability of the internetware model. In P2P network, each peer has a local component repository. The network component repository is abstract and distributed, and it is composed of all component replica wares distributed in P2P network.

Abstract:As a new software paradigm evolved by the Internet, Internetware brings many challenges for the traditional software development methods and techniques. Though architecture-based component composition (ABC) approach is originated in the traditional software paradigm, it supports the engineering of Internetware effectively due to its philosophy, rationales and mechanisms. ABC has three major contributions to the engineering of Internetware in detail. First, the feature oriented domain modeling method can structure the “disordered” “software entities” to “ordered Internetware” bottom-up in the problem space. Second, the architecture centric design and analysis method can support the development of self-adaptive Internetware. Third, the component operating platform is a reflective and self-adaptive middleware that not only provides Internetware with a powerful and flexible runtime infrastructure but also enables the self-adaptation of the structure and individual entities of Internetware.

Abstract:The open, dynamic, and constantly changing nature of Internet-based systems poses special challenges for software technologies. Unlike traditional software systems, Internet-centered software systems need to be autonomous, cooperative, situational, evolvable, emergent, and trustworthy. To cope with these characteristics, emerging software technologies are attracting attention from the research community, such as Internetware [1, 2, 5] (focusing on software paradigms) and DevOps [3, 4, 6] (focusing on software processes, culture, and methodologies). Internetware is a new software paradigm that can model the above characteristics of Internet-centered software systems, where the software is architected like the Internet, developed with the Internet, operated on the Internet, and provided as services via the Internet. While ensuring high quality, DevOps aims at increasing the frequency and speed of bringing changes from development into production, usually achieved by new organizational structures and processes with a high degree of automation (such as continuous deployment to production and feedback to developers). We present a selection of nine articles on Internetware and DevOps. Each article has undergone multiple rounds of review by at least three experts following the highest standards. The article “i-Jacob: An Internetware-Oriented Approach to Optimizing Computation-Intensive Mobile Web Browsing” by Liu et al. proposes the i-Jacob approach to improving the performance of mobile Web browsing by systematically enabling offloading of JavaScript computations between various mobile devices and clouds. The article “Adaptive Speculation for Efficient Internetware Application Execution in Clouds” by Ouyang et al. presents an algorithm to improve the execution efficiency of Internetware applications by dynamically adapting to different job types and system conditions. The article “CloudMF: Model-Driven Management of Multi-Cloud Applications” by Ferry et al. presents the evaluation and two significant extensions of the Cloud Modelling Framework (CloudMF), which fosters the design, deployment, and maintenance of multi-cloud applications. Abstract:Being a new software paradigm evolved by the Internet, Internetware brings many challenges to the traditional software methods and techniques. Sponsored by the national basic research program (973), researchers in China have developed an architecture centric technical framework for the definition, incarnation and engineering of Internetware. First of all, a software model for Internetware is defined for what to be, including that Internetware entities should be packaged as components, behaving as agents, interoperating as services, collaborating in a structured and on demand manner, etc. Secondly, a middleware for Internetware is designed and implemented for how to be, including that Internetware entities are incarnated by runtime containers, structured collaborations are enabled by runtime software architecture, Internetware can be managed in a reflective and autonomic manner, etc. Thirdly, an engineering methodology for Internetware is proposed for how to do, including the way to develop Internetware entities and their collaborations by transforming and refining a set of software architectures which cover all the phases of software lifecycle, the way to identify and organize the disordered software assets by domain modeling, etc.

Abstract:The advent of Internet technology introduces a revolution to software application and development paradigms. Traditional software development and application patterns have been shifted to Internet-based service sharing and collaboration among partners all over the Internet. This imposes new challenges and complexity in the lifecycle of software development, deployment and maintenance. Middleware, an intermediate layer to abstract the homogeneity and hide the difference of underlying systems, can be used to reduce the complexity for Internet application development. In this paper, we exploit the needs of middleware support for Internet-based applications from a service perspective. We investigate the potential requirements and features of Internetware, and the state-of-the-art solutions. We also analyze the remaining issues, the challenges and potential future research directions.

Abstract:Internetware is envisioned as a general software paradigm for the application style of resources integration and sharing in the open, dynamic and uncertain platforms such as the Internet. Continuing the agent-based Internetware model presented in a previous paper, in this paper, after an analysis of the behavioral patterns and the technical challenges of environment-driven applications, a software-structuring model is proposed for environment-driven Internetware applications. A series of explorations on the enabling techniques for the model, especially the modeling, management and utilization of context information are presented. Several prototypical systems have also been built to prove the concepts and evaluate the techniques. These research efforts make a further step toward the Internetware paradigm by providing an initial framework for the construction of context-aware and self-adaptive software application systems in the open network environment.

Such software systems composed of entities distributed through the Internetwork, allowing connections that would be impossible or difficult to make otherwise. This paper gear towards the tasks for the Internetware is to accommodate creativity. In particular, we propose a six-step approach to Internetware development, an approach suggests essential difference to traditional methods. The six steps in this approach are search, ideation, specification, coding, testing, and operation. For each of these steps, we suggest a set of techniques to carry out the step in practice. The proposed developmental model asks researchers and practitioners of the Internetware paradigm to better understand human creativity and to formulate an algorithmic perspective on creative behavior in human, to design programs that can enhance human creativity without necessarily being creative themselves.

Abstract:An operating system is an essential layer of system software that is responsible for resource management and application support on a computer system. As the evolvement of computer systems, the concept of OSs has also been evolved into many new forms beyond the traditional OSs such as Linux and Windows. We call this new generation of OSs as ubiquitous operating systems (UOSs). Among many new types of UOSs, we are particularly interested in the operating systems for Internetware, i.e., Internetware Operating Systems. Internetware is a paradigm for new types of Internet applications that are autonomous, cooperative, situational, evolvable, and trustworthy. An Internetware OS represents our perspective on the OS for future Internet-based applications. This paper discusses the examples, technical challenges and our recent effort on Internetware OSs, as well as our vision on the future of Internetware OSs. We believe that, in the foreseeable future, Internetware OSs will become ubiquitous and could be built for many different types of computer systems and beyond.

Abstract:Internetware applications must adapt themselves to keep their satisfaction with sufficient functionality, performance and dependability. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive technical platform to support such adaptations. Dynamic and low disruptive software updating techniques for multi-grained abstractions, namely objects, processes/workflows, components and coordinated systems, are proposed toward a seamless adaptation experience. The platform integrates all the techniques organically to support the practical adaptation scenarios that need the synergy of multiple techniques. We implement the platform in accordance with industrial standards with its feasibility and efficiency demonstrated and hope the platform can be a stepping stone for future technical research for the Internetware paradigm.

Abstract:An approach of using abstract state machine (ASM) in Internetware was presented to effectively support and realize the automation of Internetware. The peer-to-peer (P2P) network was used to support the network environment of Internetware. The design model of ASM was proposed to describe the behaviors and the state changes of the whole system from a higher abstract concept level. Then the system characteristic was easy to control. The architecture of the ASM in Internetware was analyzed,the detailed operating rules on ASM were proposed,and the changes were introduced in system states. A supporting platform of Internetware design and operation began to take shape through the design and implementation according to the states,events,methods,data,and rules involved in ASM. ASM is feasible in Internetware and can realize the automation feature of Internetware.
