Abstract:The rapid development of technology is viewed as a key determinant of success in a firm. Technology innovation is regarded as a tool for strengthening the competitiveness of a firm or an industry. This paper develops a model of technology innovation. We hypothesize that technological innovation capabilities are a function of a firm's technology competence, top management support, information source and strategic alliances. These relationships are empirically tested using the date of 160 Chinese firms acquired by interviews and surveys. The results indicate some important implications for the managers. First, the technology competence is positively associated with the level of innovation. In addition, managers need to pay attention to the information source, which influence the speed of technology innovation. Secondly, the prior technology and management experience of CEO and the attitude to innovation will influence the development the technology of a firm. Lastly, from the results we find the number of strategic alliances has no significant relationship with technology innovation. It is to say, managers need to consider the best number of technological copartner. Furthermore, we conclude the implications of this research and discuss the limitations of the study and future research.

Abstract:The precise relationship between service innovation and financial outcomes in this context remains ambiguous. This study examines the extent to which service innovation contributes to financial outcomes, analyzing data from 512 manufacturing companies across China from 1993 to 2017, sourced from the CSMAR database. Utilizing OLS regression and fixed effects model method, we identify a positive nonlinear correlation between service innovation and financial performance, highlighting a "service dilemma" that varies between state‐owned and private enterprises, which follows a "saddle‐type" pattern. In addition, the impact of service innovation shows considerable variation across different industries. This research provides critical insights into optimizing financial performance through strategic service innovation across various types of enterprises and industries. It underscores the importance of tailored industrial strategies and equitable competition in enhancing service innovation. The study's extensive sample size and its focus on the heterogeneity among enterprise types and industries mark its key contributions to understand service innovation's role in financial performance.

Abstract:This article provides empirical light on the debate concerning whether manufacturing firms in China are becoming major innovators. Based on an innovation survey carried out in Jiangsu Province, the article finds that most firms engage in innovative activities but these are mainly of an incremental nature. Radical innovation, as a proportion of sales, is relatively low if compared internationally. Innovation in China is mainly to catch-up and is novel relative to the firm and the domestic market. A small proportion of innovation is new to the world. Intensity and productivity indicators suggest that small, foreign and textile firms are leading innovative efforts. Firms innovate to improve their general competitiveness, including improving product quality and extending market share, obtain income from technology and defend themselves from research and development expenditure by competitors. Innovators value significantly more than non-innovators the range of innovative objectives they seek to achieve. The main obstacles to innovation arise from technical and marketing weaknesses; the perception of these obstacles varies widely between radical innovators and non-innovators. The article concludes that while innovative activities are emerging it will still take some time for China to have a major role in the international division of innovative labour.
Non-R&D Innovation in Smes: an Empirical Study from China

Abstract:For a long time, R&D had been largely equated with technological innovation by both academia and enterprises, sometimes even been regarded as the only effective way of innovation. However, ample empirical studies in recent years showed that, some of the innovative firms, especially small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), often use many other innovative methods to win the competitive advantages. EU's surveys in recent years even indicated that over half of European innovative firms did not perform formal R&D. Based on a survey of 398 Chinese SMEs in 2012, this paper tried to develop a preliminary theoretical framework for SMEs' non-R&D-based innovation practice in the Chinese context, as well as main patterns of SMEs' non-R&D innovation, such as technology adoption, imitation, marketing innovation and etc. Through our empirical study, we find that non-R&D innovation activities have significant positive impacts on SMEs' innovation performance. Meantime, good absorptive capacity also helps to improve innovation performance of SMEs. Firms with better absorptive capacity would have better innovation performance when doing marketing innovation. However, firms may act worse with better absorptive capacity when doing technological non-R&D innovation.

This research examines the role of producer-service, as well as the relationship between producer-service and manufacturing. And then an empirical study with data of the year 2000 to 2007 from statistical yearbook of Zhejiang province proves the interactive relationship of producer service and manufacturing industry in China. Finally, the study gives some practical guidelines to improve the growth mode of producer service to enhance the upgrading of manufacturing industry.

Abstract:Whether from the product innovation profit is an important standard to measure the success of enterprise innova-tion .At the same time ,more and more enterprises are trying to increase services based on the products to gain competitive advantage ,but whether the service orientation can help companies to profit from the product innovation is an important but has not yet been effectively solved problems .Through empirical research on the 279 Chinese manufacturing enterprises show that service orientation in manufacturing enterprises will hinder the profit from product innovation ,but technology and market uncertainty will alleviate this inhibition .There are the important contribution of this paper to profit from inno-vation theory and theory of enterprise transformation and upgrading of manufacturing enterprises ,and providing practical guidance for the transformation of Chinese manufacturing enterprises .

Abstract:Given China's rapidly developing landscape, improving innovation performance has become a critical objective for high-tech service firms. This study examined the relationship between business models and the performance of Chinese high-tech service firms. The theoretical model is based on contingency theory and incorporates concepts from business model innovation, and technological innovation. A multilevel regression analysis was conducted using data from 489 high-tech service firms in China. The results indicate significant positive correlations between innovation performance and various factors such as efficiency- and novelty-oriented business models, technology development, and technology acquisition. Second, technological innovation mode mediates the relationship between the business model and innovation performance. Third, technological regimes have different moderating effects on the relationships between the type of business model and innovation performance and that between the type of technological innovation and innovation performance. From a practical perspective, firms operating under different technological regimes should adjust their business strategies to achieve optimal innovation performance. Furthermore, the results have several theoretical contributions and practical implications. The findings offer a valuable reference for business growth in developing regions and identifies viable ways to improve the innovation performance of China's high-tech service enterprises.
Service innovation strategies and competitive advantages for manufacturing firms:Mechanisms and contingencies

Abstract:Although previous researches have indicated that service innovation is an effective strategy to gain competitive advantages for manufacturing firms,there still lacks an in-depth and clear account of how service innovation strategies actually influence manufacturing firms' competitive advantages in the context of dynamic competitive environment.Thus,from the perspective of dynamic capability theory,we selected 247 Chinese manufacturing firms as a sample and investigate the practical relationship between service innovation strategies and firms' competitive advantages.This empirical research indicates that both incremental and radical service innovation strategies have a directly positive impact on manufacturing firms' competitive advantages in the dimensions of market performance and financial performance.These two strategies contribute more to improving the manufacturing firms' market performance and financial performance when the market is more dynamic.The competition intensity,as a moderator,has a positive moderating influence on the relationship of the radical service innovation strategy with financial performance,as well as the market performance;while as for incremental service innovation strategy,it only has a positive influence on the relationship of the radical service innovation strategy with financial performance.These findings have important theoretical contributions to the existing literature and also have important practical implications for Chinese manufacturing firms' service strategy in dynamic environment.

Abstract:PurposeGiven the importance of frontline employees in implementing the service strategy, the purpose of this paper is to examine whether service-orientated human resource management (SHRM) practices are important organizational antecedents to help manufacturing firms gain the benefit of the service strategy. Furthermore, the paper also explores whether SHRM practices promote manufacturing firms’ performance through demand-side search.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs survey methodology to examine a research model that explores whether and how SHRM practices influence manufacturing firms’ performance through demand-side search. Data from 151 high-tech manufacturing firms in a science park of China are analyzed to test the research model.FindingsThis study finds that SHRM practices can enhance manufacturing firms’ performance, and demand-side search plays a mediating role in this relationship.Research limitations/implicationsDepending on a single science park in China to provide cross-sectional subjective data for the core variables and the choice of firms limits the capacity to generalize the findings.Practical implicationsThese findings suggest that during transition to service business model, manufacturing firms should design supported organizational systems, especially SHRM practices, and commit to demand-side search as an efficient means to gain the benefit of the service strategy.Originality/valueThe study highlights the crucial role of SHRM practices in the implementation of the service strategy, as well as the mediating role of demand-side search. These results provide some new insights to explain the inconsistent findings in the servitization literature.
Innovation and Productivity in Service Industry——An Empirical Study Based on Micro Firm-level Data

Abstract:Based on firm-level data from Kunshan in Suzhou,it empirically examines the relationship between innovation and productivity in service sector.After clarifying the differentials of innovation between manufacturing and service sectors,five indicators are used with regard to innovation performance and innovation process to measure innovation level in service sector.Then the Heckit model is employed to deal with the endogenous problem induced by selection bias of the samples,and to distinguish the determinants of service innovation.The results show that the relationship between innovation and productivity in service sector differs from firm types and innovation modes.Specifically,innovation impacts positively on service firms,especially on knowledge-intensive sectors while there is no significant,even weakly negative relationship between innovation and non-knowledge-intensive sectors.Process innovation has a positive effect on all types of service firms.The results also demonstrate that interaction innovation,especially,interaction with customers and competitors is the chief driving force of service innovation.In addition,government plays an important role in promoting innovation.

Abstract:This study examines what factors contribute to firm innovation performance as a result of successful launch of new products in China. Rather than simply applying theories of product innovation often developed in the West, this study takes an indigenous perspective to explore what product strategies and which environment factors, defined by Chinese managers, contribute to the improved firm performance. With the data of Chinese firms from over 40 cities across the country, this study surveys more than 700 manufacturing firms that have introduced new products to the market. The result shows that while a defensive product strategy is negatively related to a firm's patent application, a prospector strategy helps increase its market share in China. In addition, innovation policy and total R&D investment drive a firm to sell more products overseas and increase its new product sales across the globe. Local talent market can also help improve a firm's patent application but often drive the firm to focus more on domestic markets. Implications of the results for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:To analyse the relationships amongst technology innovation, servitisation, human capital structure and performance in manufacturing firms, a sample of 1247 manufacturing firms listed on the A‐share market in China from 2013 to 2020 were collected. The conclusions are as follows. (1) Technological innovation has positive effect on performance. (2) Service transformation can mediate the effect of technological innovation on performance. (3) Advanced human capital skills can positively moderate the effect of service transformation on performance, whereas advanced human capital education can positively moderate the effect of technological innovation on performance. (4) The effect differs by firm type and location.

Abstract:This study, using the Technology Acceptance Model and Innovation Diffusion Theory, utilizes datasets from A-share manufacturing companies listed on China's stock exchange from 2010 to 2022 to examine the impact of smart manufacturing on the dimensions of enterprise breakthrough innovation and the moderating role of service-oriented transformation. The findings reveal a "U-shaped" relationship between smart manufacturing and the width of breakthrough innovation, and an inverted "U-shaped" relationship between smart manufacturing and the depth of breakthrough innovation. Furthermore, enterprises' service-oriented transformation positively moderates these relationships. This study is limited by its focus on Chinese listed companies, which may restrict the generalizability of the results to other regions. Future research should consider a broader sample, to validate and extend these findings. Nevertheless, the research findings provide a theoretical basis and practical insights for enterprises' intelligent transformation and service transformation, promoting enterprise breakthrough innovation.

Abstract:Using a sample of 1397 manufacturing firms in China, this study explores how information and communication technology (ICT) stimulates innovation performance through interaction with investment in internal and external knowledge. The results of this study reveal that the adoption of ICT not only contributes to innovation by directly enhancing its output, but also affects the creation of knowledge along two different paths in Chinese manufacturing firms. Specifically, ICT mediates research and development to foster innovative sales and it is an effective moderator in leveraging externally acquired knowledge.

Abstract:In this article, we expand upon the springboard perspective of emerging markets in the service sector. We investigate the phenomenon of service firm internationalization in China and the distinct differences between service and manufacturing firms during international expansion. Using dynamic analysis of historical data for 363 service firms and 569 manufacturing firms from 2001 to 2007, we find that the internationalization of service firms in China is different from that of manufacturing firms in terms of resource requirement and experience exploitation. The internationalization of service firms relies more on international experience than corporate resources. Furthermore, we also identify the structural differences between hard and soft service industries. In China, identifiable intangible assets are found to be more important for the international expansion of hard service firms than they are for soft service firms. (C) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Manufacturing firms increasingly rely on externally supplied knowledge and services, which motivate many of them to pay increased attention to external knowledge-intensive service activities (KISA). This article aims to increase understandings of how and through which mechanisms external KISA can facilitate the generation of innovations by manufacturing firms. Results from this study of Chinese manufacturing firms and KISA suggest that knowledge integration (including knowledge combination and knowledge allocation) mediates between external KISA and innovation.

Abstract:Based on firm-level data from Suzhou, this article examines the relationship between innovation and productivity in service sector. We focus on special features that services innovate differently from manufacturing, and use five indicators of innovation performance and innovation activities. Heckit model is employed to deal with the endogenous problem. Empirical results show that the relationship between innovation and productivity in service sector differs from firm type and innovation mode. The main findings of this article are: under most circumstances, innovation impacts positively on service firms, especially knowledge-intensive sectors. There is no significant relationship between innovation and non-knowledge-intensive sectors. Unlike manufacturing innovation, customers and competitors are the chief drivers of service innovation. In addition, government has a boost in service innovation.

Abstract:Current studies suggest that relationship with knowledge intensive business service helps manufacturing firms extend the service business and pursue service innovation,but there is lack of clear understanding of what characteristics of embedded knowledge intensive business service network can promote the boundary-spanning knowledge search and thus improve the service innovation performance of manufacturing firms.Based on social network theory and organizational search theory,a theoretical model among embedded knowledge intensive business service network,boundary-spanning search and service innovation are developed.Empirical findings from a sample of 236 manufacturing firms show that,the tie strength,tie quality,network size and heterogeneity of embedded knowledge intensive business service network have a positive effect on service innovation of manufacturing firms;boundary-spanning search acts as a partial mediator between tie strength,tie quality and service innovation,and as a full mediator between network size,heterogeneity and service innovation.
