Abstract:Binocular stereo vision is an important aspect in computer vision field. In this paper, it is made a systematic research, which is the system of human-computer interaction based on bincular stereo vision. In order to improve the anti-interference performance the hardware system worked in the condition of near infrared ; to inhance the real time operation , the level of difficulty with stereo matching algorithm is simplified through special hardware design; based on the ICP algorithm for tracking tools, the flexibility and convenience of system are increasingly. The application in surgical navigation system is discussed. In the prototype system, how to unified virtual coordinates and real coordinates has been presented; the problem on how to tracking patient undergoing in real-time is solved. The result has higher precision and practicability, which provide a good platform for virtual reality.

Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine

Abstract:Increasingly wider availability of biomedical imaging modalities, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonic imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and optical imaging, have led to significant progresses in both biomedical research and clinical practice. Advancements in imaging technology and image informatics have facilitated and enabled quantitative understanding of the biological structures, functional organisms, and pathological mechanisms. This special issue presents 14 latest research contributions in computational biomedical imaging. The focuses have been on the computational principles, strategies, methods, and algorithms that create, extract, and understand imaging data of biomedical significance. The first group of papers has showcased the development and applications of rigorous optimization techniques in biomedical imaging. The work based on dual unscented Kalman filtering provides a reliable and efficient platform to understand the BOLD signals from fMRI. In the other paper, the robust discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm is adopted to solve the branch-cut phase unwrapping problem of MRI data. Without the need for a regularization penalty term, a semigreed method for bioluminescence tomography reconstruction is fast and stable for small animal imaging. The second group of papers has addressed image segmentation and tissue characterization problems, ever popular among image analysis researchers. The work of L. Li et al. applies machine learning techniques to characterize lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer from gemstone spectral imaging with much improved outcomes, while G. V. Sanchez. Ferrero et al. make new advances in ultrasonic speckle characterization using generalized Gama distribution and generalized Gama mixture model. In recent years, physically meaningful modeling and simulation have become integral components for model-constrained imaging and model-based image understanding. Thus, the third group of papers has continued the stride in this direction. The propagation of myocardial electrical activation is simulated using a monodomain model, without the need of explicit mesh constraints. In similar spirit, one work performs forward modeling of 3D optical molecular imaging with simplified spherical harmonics approximation using extended finite element method. The final group of papers has highlighted some new imaging modalities and their potential use in clinical practice. The further development of ultrasound-based quantitative imaging of Young's modulus with high accuracy is presented in this issue. And the novel Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging shows that more detailed classification of brain tissues is clinical significance. We appreciate the many high quality submissions to this special issue from leading researchers in computational biomedical imaging. Because of space limitation, we can only accept a small number of most exciting works. We sincerely hope that the remaining interesting research outcomes will be soon published in other venues.

Abstract:It is our great pleasure and honor to organize the First IEEE Computer Society International Workshop on Biologically Motivated Computer Vision (BMCV 2000). The workshop BMCV 2000 aims to facilitate debates on biologically motivated vision systems and to provide an opportunity for researchers in the area of vision to see and share the latest developments in state-of-the-art technology. The rapid progress being made in the field of computer vision has had a tremendous impact on the modeling and implementation of biologically motivated computer vision. A multitude of new advances and findings in the domain of computer vision will be presented at this workshop. By December 1999 a total of 90 full papers had been submitted from 28 countries. To ensure the high quality of workshop and proceedings, the program committee selected and accepted 56 of them after a thorough review process. Of these papers 25 will be presented in 5 oral sessions and 31 in a poster session. The papers span a variety of topics in computer vision from computational theories to their implementation. In addition to these excellent presentations, there will be eight invited lectures by distinguished scientists on “hot” topics. We must add that the program committee and the reviewers did an excellent job within a tight schedule.

Abstract:The recent development in the areas of deep learning and deep convolutional neural networks has significantly progressed and advanced the field of computer vision (CV) and image analysis and understanding. Complex tasks such as classifying and segmenting medical images and localising and recognising objects of interest have become much less challenging. This progress has the potential of accelerating research and deployment of multitudes of medical applications that utilise CV. However, in reality, there are limited practical examples being physically deployed into front-line health facilities. In this paper, we examine the current state of the art in CV as applied to the medical domain. We discuss the main challenges in CV and intelligent data-driven medical applications and suggest future directions to accelerate research, development, and deployment of CV applications in health practices. First, we critically review existing literature in the CV domain that addresses complex vision tasks, including: medical image classification; shape and object recognition from images; and medical segmentation. Second, we present an in-depth discussion of the various challenges that are considered barriers to accelerating research, development, and deployment of intelligent CV methods in real-life medical applications and hospitals. Finally, we conclude by discussing future directions.

Abstract:The papers in this special issue focus on biomedical Big Data. Biomedical imaging is an essential component in various fields of biomedical research and clinical practice. The study of biologists requires continuous monitoring of cell behavior under microscope. Neuroscientists detect regional metabolic brain activity from positron emission tomography (PET), functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and magnetic resonance spectrum imaging (MRSI) scans. During these researching process, large amount of biomedical data will be produced for processing. The development of advanced imaging equipment and diverse applications also have driven the generation of biomedical big data. The main challenge and bottleneck for the related research is the conversion of “biomedical big data” into interpretable information and hence discoveries. Computer vision theory has a huge potential in many aspects for automated understanding of biomedical data and has been used successfully to speed up and improve applications such as large-scale cell image analysis (image preconditioning, cell segmentation and detection, cell tracking, and cell behavior identification), image reconstruction and registration, organ segmentation and disease classification. Considering the recent advance in machine learning technique, deep learning has revolutionized multiple fields of computer vision, significantly pushing the state of arts of computer vision systems in a broad array of high-level tasks. Hopefully these technique advance will help to deal problems in biomedical big data.

Abstract:The advent of artificial intelligence (AI), especially the state-of-the-art deep learning frameworks, has begun a silent revolution in all medical subfields, including ophthalmology. Due to their specific microvascular and neural structures, the eyes are anatomically associated with the rest of the body. Hence, ocular image-based AI technology may be a useful alternative or additional screening strategy for systemic diseases, especially where resources are scarce. This review summarizes the current applications of AI related to the prediction of systemic diseases from multimodal ocular images, including cardiovascular diseases, dementia, chronic kidney diseases, and anemia. Finally, we also discuss the current predicaments and future directions of these applications.

Abstract:The fields of computer vision (CV) and artificial intelligence (AI) have undergone rapid advancements in the past decade, many of which have been applied to the analysis of intraoperative video. These advances are driven by wide-spread application of deep learning, which leverages multiple layers of neural networks to teach computers complex tasks. Prior to these advances, applications of AI in the operating room were limited by our relative inability to train computers to accurately understand images with traditional machine learning (ML) techniques. The development and refining of deep neural networks that can now accurately identify objects in images and remember past surgical events has sparked a surge in the applications of CV to analyze intraoperative video and has allowed for the accurate identification of surgical phases (steps) and instruments across a variety of procedures. In some cases, CV can even identify operative phases with accuracy similar to surgeons. Future research will likely expand on this foundation of surgical knowledge using larger video datasets and improved algorithms with greater accuracy and interpretability to create clinically useful AI models that gain widespread adoption and augment the surgeon's ability to provide safer care for patients everywhere.

Its primary aim is to emulate the psychological processes of human vision to interpret and depict objective scenery. This revolutionary field encompasses a wide range of applications, including life sciences, medical diagnosis, military operations, scientific research, and many others. At the heart of computer vision lies the theoretical core, which includes deep learning, image recognition, target detection, and target tracking These elements combine to enable computers to process, analyze, and understand images, allowing for the classification of objects based on various patterns One of the standout advantages of deep learning techniques, when compared to traditional methods, is their ability to automatically learn and adapt to the specific features required for a given problem. This adaptive nature of deep learning networks has opened up new possibilities and paved the way for remarkable breakthroughs in the field of computer vision. This paper examines the practical application of computer vision processing technology and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and elucidates the advancements in artificial intelligence within the field of computer vision image recognition. Abstract:Hundreds of millions of operations are performed worldwide each year, and the rising uptake in minimally invasive surgery has enabled fiber optic cameras and robots to become both important tools to conduct surgery and sensors from which to capture information about surgery. Computer vision (CV), the application of algorithms to analyze and interpret visual data, has become a critical technology through which to study the intraoperative phase of care with the goals of augmenting surgeons' decision-making processes, supporting safer surgery, and expanding access to surgical care. While much work has been performed on potential use cases, there are currently no CV tools widely used for diagnostic or therapeutic applications in surgery. Using laparoscopic cholecystectomy as an example, we reviewed current CV techniques that have been applied to minimally invasive surgery and their clinical applications. Finally, we discuss the challenges and obstacles that remain to be overcome for broader implementation and adoption of CV in surgery.

Abstract:Computer vision (CV), a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that uses digital videos or a sequence of images to recognize content, has been used extensively across industries in recent years. However, in the healthcare industry, its applications are limited by factors like privacy, safety, and ethical concerns. Despite this, CV has the potential to improve patient monitoring, and system efficiencies, while reducing workload. In contrast to previous reviews, we focus on the end-user applications of CV. First, we briefly review and categorize CV applications in other industries (job enhancement, surveillance and monitoring, automation, and augmented reality). We then review the developments of CV in the hospital setting, outpatient, and community settings. The recent advances in monitoring delirium, pain and sedation, patient deterioration, mechanical ventilation, mobility, patient safety, surgical applications, quantification of workload in the hospital, and monitoring for patient events outside the hospital are highlighted. To identify opportunities for future applications, we also completed journey mapping at different system levels. Lastly, we discuss the privacy, safety, and ethical considerations associated with CV and outline processes in algorithm development and testing that limit CV expansion in healthcare. This comprehensive review highlights CV applications and ideas for its expanded use in healthcare.

Abstract:With the emergence of unmanned plane, autonomous vehicles, face recognition, and language processing, the artificial intelligence (AI) has remarkably revolutionized our lifestyle. Recent studies indicate that AI has astounding potential to perform much better than human beings in some tasks, especially in the image recognition field. As the amount of image data in imaging center of ophthalmology is increasing dramatically, analyzing and processing these data is in urgent need. AI has been tried to apply to decipher medical data and has made extraordinary progress in intelligent diagnosis. In this paper, we presented the basic workflow for building an AI model and systematically reviewed applications of AI in the diagnosis of eye diseases. Future work should focus on setting up systematic AI platforms to diagnose general eye diseases based on multimodal data in the real world.

Abstract:Effectiveness of computer vision techniques has been demonstrated through a number of applications, both within and outside healthcare. The operating room environment specifically is a setting with rich data sources compatible with computational approaches and high potential for direct patient benefit. The aim of this review is to summarize major topics in computer vision for surgical domains. The major capabilities of computer vision are described as an aid to surgical teams to improve performance and contribute to enhanced patient safety. Literature was identified through leading experts in the fields of surgery, computational analysis and modeling in medicine, and computer vision in healthcare. The literature supports the application of computer vision principles to surgery. Potential applications within surgery include operating room vigilance, endoscopic vigilance, and individual and team-wide behavioral analysis. To advance the field, we recommend collecting and publishing carefully annotated datasets. Doing so will enable the surgery community to collectively define well-specified common objectives for automated systems, spur academic research, mobilize industry, and provide benchmarks with which we can track progress. Leveraging computer vision approaches through interdisciplinary collaboration and advanced approaches to data acquisition, modeling, interpretation, and integration promises a powerful impact on patient safety, public health, and financial costs.

Abstract:Human kind is exposed to large amounts of data. According to statistics, more than 80% of information received by humans comes from the visual system. Therefore, image information processing is not only an important research topic but also a challenging task. The unique information processing mechanism of the human visual system provides it with fast, accurate, and efficient image processing capabilities. At present, many advanced image analysis and processing techniques have been widely used in image communication, geographic information systems, medical image analysis, and virtual reality. However, there is still a large gap between these technologies and the human visual system. Therefore, building an image system research mechanism based on the biological vision system is an attractive but difficult target. Although it is a challenge, it can also be considered as an opportunity which utilizes biologically inspired ideas. Meanwhile, through the integration of neural biology, biological perception mechanisms, and computer science and mathematical science, related research can bridge biological vision and computer vision. Finally, the biologically inspired image analysis and processing system is expected to be built on the basis of further consideration of the learning mechanism of the human brain.

Abstract:Signal capture is at the forefront of perceiving and understanding the environment; thus, imaging plays a pivotal role in mobile vision. Recent unprecedented progress in artificial intelligence (AI) has shown great potential in the development of advanced mobile platforms with new imaging devices. Traditional imaging systems based on the "capturing images first and processing afterward" mechanism cannot meet this explosive demand. On the other hand, computational imaging (CI) systems are designed to capture high-dimensional data in an encoded manner to provide more information for mobile vision systems. Thanks to AI, CI can now be used in real-life systems by integrating deep learning algorithms into the mobile vision platform to achieve a closed loop of intelligent acquisition, processing, and decision-making, thus leading to the next revolution of mobile vision. Starting from the history of mobile vision using digital cameras, this work first introduces the advancement of CI in diverse applications and then conducts a comprehensive review of current research topics combining CI and AI. Although new-generation mobile platforms, represented by smart mobile phones, have deeply integrated CI and AI for better image acquisition and processing, most mobile vision platforms, such as self-driving cars and drones only loosely connect CI and AI, and are calling for a closer integration. Motivated by this fact, at the end of this work, we propose some potential technologies and disciplines that aid the deep integration of CI and AI and shed light on new directions in the future generation of mobile vision platforms.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad term that generally refers to the artificial creation of human-like intelligence that can learn, perceive and plan. To date, AI techniques in medical domains have sparked tremendous innovations. With the continuous development of large datasets and computer science, AI has become a promising avenue in medicine and a hotspot of current research. As there are a large number of patients with the cardiovascular disease worldwide, the demand for medical imaging examinations continues to increase, and also, imaging data are constantly being generated. Nowadays, the application of AI in cardiovascular medicine has been shown to improve patient care and outcomes in clinical practice. In this review, we briefly introduce some basic AI-related terminology, its applications in coronary artery diseases (CAD) imaging, current limitations, and future perspectives.
