Abstract:Based on an analysis of the status quo and accomplishment of research on GIS data uncertainty, the main frame and system of GIS data uncertainty is described primarily. Then the core theories and the main issues of GIS data uncertainty, especially the position uncertainty, the attribute uncertainty, the temporal uncertainty, the spread and management of uncertainty, are discussed. At length, the mathematical methods of research on GIS data uncertainty are analyzed and concluded in detail.

Abstract:Decision-making in water management requires the delivery of accurate scientific information. However, the task is challenging under the situation where a large amount of uncertainty exists in the available information (e.g., model outputs). This paper investigates the effect of uncertainty on the ranking of options in water management. Different methods for ranking the management options under uncertainty are reviewed and they account for only partial uncertainty information in model outputs. To consider the full uncertainty information, a new ranking procedure is proposed in this paper, which is capable of providing more information to decision makers and at the same time taking their opinions on uncertainty into consideration. The ranking is achieved by conducting pair-wise comparison of management options, on the basis of the risk defined by the probability of obtaining an unacceptable ranking and the mean difference in model outputs in pair-wise comparison. An application example is presented to illustrate the use of the proposed ranking approach. Furthermore, the sensitivity of management option ranking to different ranking methods and to model uncertainty is also investigated.

Abstract:Issues of accuracy, uncertainty, and spatial data quality have been on the top of most GIScience research agendas around the world from the late 1980s. Ever since then, growing research efforts have been directed toward uncertainty characterization in spatial information, analysis, and applications, aiming for better understanding of spatial uncertainty and thus improved methods and techniques for assessing and managing data quality. Impressive progress has been made in various issues concerning data quality. In addition, growing research on extensions to the conventional norms of data quality, such as the quality aspects of geospatial information services, has been observed. Chinese researchers have contributed to this great cause by keeping abreast with the developments abroad and striving for their own innovative work. This paper reviews the past research on data quality-related issues and provides a perspective on future developments. These will be seen not only in continued research on theoretical and technical issues concerning data quality, but also in developments of tools for quality assessment and decision-making under uncertainty through geospatial information processing and applications.

Uncertainty in Place-Based GIS:A Review and a Research Framework

Abstract:A Place-Based GIS(PB-GIS) directly represents human geospatial knowledge.Since uncertainty is an inherent feature in both human intelligence and artificial intelligence,uncertainty in PB-GIS should be modeled.Compared with conventional coordinate-based GIS,a PB-GIS takes into account more types of uncertainty,which generally includes randomness and vagueness.This paper reviews and summarizes relevant research on modeling uncertainty in PB-GIS.Most research establishes qualitative or semi-quantitative models.A framework for managing different types of uncertainty is proposed.It represents uncertainty from the following four aspects:subjects,types,mathematical approaches to representation,and relevant activities.Firstly,the subjects of uncertainty include geographical features,places,spatial relationships,propositions,rules,and laws.Secondly,from the classification perspective,the uncertainty in PB-GIS may be vagueness,randomness,roughness,and ambiguity.Thirdly,each type of uncertainty can be modeled by corresponding representation approaches,such as fuzzy sets,rough sets,and probabilities.Lastly,the uncertainty in PB-GIS is always associated with different activities in mapping from the real world to information systems.These four aspects provide a guide to model uncertainty in place-based geographical information systems.

Abstract:Spatial relations are extensively used in spatial database query language, content-based spatial data retrieval and spatial data analysis. The uncertainty is an inherent characteristic of spatial relations, but little attention was paid to it. In this article, firstly, the definition, the implication of uncertainty of spatial relations and their influences on application of spatial relations are presented. Secondly, the sources of uncertainty spatial relations from the uncertainty of spatial data, spatial recognition and processing of spatial relation are analyzed, and the framework of processing uncertainty is proposed. Thirdly, the qualitative methods of describing spatial relations are evaluated and their shortcomings are pointed out. Finally, the fuzzy set theory is introduced to describing the fuzziness of spatial relations. The fuzzy methods can describe the partly membership between a geometry spatial relation and a concept. The fuzziness of spatial objects, people's cognition to spatial relations and similarity between two spatial relations can be described in a unified method, and spatial relations between two crisp objects, between two fuzzy objects and between crisp objects and fuzzy objects can also be expressed in a unified method. The fuzzy method lays a foundation for researching uncertain spatial relations.

Abstract:It is inevitable to bring about uncertainty during the process of data acquisition, derivation, and visualization. Different from data error and data conflict, uncertainty resides in and propagates along each stage of the visualization pipeline. Uncertainty is an important ingredient of data. Visualizing uncertainty can help the analysts gain insight into the data to make better decisions. In this paper, first we introduce the main sources of uncertainty; then we summarize the state-of-the-art uncertainty visualization approaches into four categories: glyph, visual variable encoding, geometry, and animation; at last we outline some directions requiring further studies.

Abstract:Uncertainties pervade spatial data mining. This paper proposes a method of spatial data mining handling randomness and fuzziness simultaneously. First, the uncertainties in spatial data mining are presented via characteristics, spatial data, knowledge discovery and knowledge representation. Second, the aspects of the uncertainties in spatial data mining are briefed. They often appear simultaneously, but most of the existing methods cannot deal with spatial data mining with more than one uncertainty. Third, cloud model is presented to mine spatial data with both randomness and fuzziness. It may also act as an uncertainty transition between a qualitative concept and its quantitative data, which is the basis of spatial data mining in the contexts of uncertainties. Finally, a case study on landslide-monitoring data mining is given. The results show that the proposed method can well deal with randomness and fuzziness during the process of spatial data mining.

Abstract:GIS is a tool for spatial-related data processing and decision making. Handling decision making under high quality data is a further extension of GIS functions. Therefore, it is of vital importance to assess data quality in GIS and to decide the fitness of data to user's particular applications. We present a methodology to determine two data quality characteristics - accuracy and completeness - that are of critical importance to decision makers. We examine how the quality metrics of source data affect the quality for information outputs produced using the relational algebra operations Selection, Projection, and Cartesian product. Our methodology can help users deciding the fitness of spatial data to their GIS applications according to the quality levels much efficiently.

Abstract:Both the current trends in technology such as smartphones, general mobile devices, stationary sensors, and satellites as well as a new user mentality of using this technology to voluntarily share enriched location information produces a flood of geo-spatial and geo-spatiotemporal data. This data flood provides tremendous potential for discovering new and useful knowledge. But in addition to the fact that measurements are imprecise, spatial data is often interpolated between discrete observations. To reduce communication and bandwidth utilization, data is often subjected to a reduction, thereby eliminating some of the known/recorded values. These issues introduce the notion of uncertainty in spatial data management, an aspect raising the imminent need for scalable and flexible solutions. The main scope of this chapter is to survey existing techniques for managing, querying, and mining uncertain spatial data. First, this chapter surveys common data representations for uncertain data, explains the commonly used possible worlds semantics to interpret an uncertain database, and surveys existing system to process uncertain data. Then, this chapter defines the notion of probabilistic result semantics to distinguish the task of computing individual object probabilities versus computing entire result probabilities. This is important, as, for many queries, the problem of computing object-level probabilities can be solved efficiently, whereas result-level probabilities are hard to compute. Finally, this chapter introduces a novel paradigm to efficiently answer any kind of query on uncertain data: the Paradigm of Equivalent Worlds, which groups the exponential set of possible database worlds into a polynomial number of sets of equivalent worlds that can be processed efficiently. Examples and use-cases of querying uncertain spatial data are provided using the example of uncertain range queries.

Abstract:A set-valued information system (SVIS) is the generalization of a single-valued information system. A SVIS with missing information values is called an incomplete set-valued information system (ISVIS). This paper focuses on studying uncertainty measurement for an ISVIS with application to attribute reduction. First, the similarity degree between information values on each attribute is presented in an ISVIS. Then, the tolerance relation induced by each subsystem is given and rough approximations based on this relation is considered. Next, some tools to measure the uncertainty of an ISVIS are put forwarded. Moreover, the validity of the proposed measures is analyzed from the statistical point of view. Finally, information granulation and information entropy are applied to attribute reduction, the incomplete rate is adopted, and the effectiveness under different incomplete rates is analyzed and verified by k-means clustering algorithm and Mean Shift clustering algorithm.

Abstract:Due to limitations in data acquisition, data in real life often contains a wealth of uncertain information. Uncertainty measurement (UM) constructed within the framework of rough set theory (RST) is an important tool for processing uncertain information. Some basic UMs in RST such as classification precision, rough membership degree, dependence degree, and attribute importance cannot accurately measure the uncertainty of a hybrid information system (HIS). For example, dependence degree only considers the information provided by the lower approximation of the decision and ignores the upper approximation, which may lead to some information loss. In addition to these basic UMs, some extended entropy-based UMs such as rough entropy, information entropy and conditional entropy are also frequently used to measure the uncertainty of a HIS. However, these three UMs also have their own drawbacks. For instance, rough entropy is sensitive to the distribution of hybrid data. When the distribution of hybrid data is uneven, the calculation results of rough entropy may be greatly affected, leading to a decrease in measurement accuracy. This paper proposes four new UMs in a HIS and provides an application in attribute reduction. First of all, a distance function is defined to deal with each type of attribute in a HIS and construct a tolerance relation. On this basis, four UMs are listed to measure the uncertainty of a HIS. Next, the strength and weakness of the proposed UMs are verified by statistical analysis. Subsequently, the UM with the best performance is selected to design an attribute reduction algorithm. Finally, the designed algorithm is compared with other five attribute reduction algorithms to show its superior performance.

Abstract:Geochemical mapping is a crucial tool that can provide valuable insights for a wide range of applications, including mineral resources prospecting, environmental impact assessment, geological process understanding, and climate change research. Despite its significance, geochemical mapping requires spatial modeling based on sparse, heterogeneous, and potentially inaccurate data sets. Moreover, the underlying geological processes are often imperfectly understood. Therefore, uncertainty quantification (UQ) is vital in geochemical mapping to ensure accurate and reliable results, ultimately facilitating well‐informed decision‐making. In this contribution, we distinguish two primary types of uncertainties: systemic and stochastic. We identify the key sources of uncertainties in geochemical mapping and review the techniques that have been employed or hold potential for uncertainty quantification, communication, visualization, and sensitivity analysis. This contribution also illustrates the general procedure of UQ in geochemical mapping by a case study of mapping geochemical anomalies associated with gold mineralization in northwestern Sichuan Province, China. We also explore potential strategies for mitigating the critical uncertainties, such as gathering more geochemical data, developing more effective models, enhancing our understanding of the geochemical dispersion process, or leveraging other thematic information or knowledge. Future research should prioritize addressing underexplored uncertainties and implementing more practical applications to validate the UQ procedure in geochemical mapping.

Abstract:In the representation and communication of geographical knowledge of human beings,locations are often textually expressed.In addition to place names and addresses,a spatial assertion,which consists of reference objects and spatial relations,can roughly describe a locality.Typical examples of spatial assertions are "the vicinity of Peking University" and "Between Peking University and Tsinghua University".The objective of spatial positioning is to infer the location of a target object and the associated uncertainty for a given spatial assertion.In this research,we investigate four levels of uncertainty associated with spatial assertions.They are uncertainty of spatial assertions,imperfection of reference objects,imprecision and vagueness of spatial relations,and distribution of target objects.If a target object is Abstracted to a point,the concept of an uncertainty field can be used to represent the possible spatial distribution of the target object.An uncertainty field is a 2-dimensional probability density function that satisfies Fp(x,y)dxdy=1 where p(x,y) denotes the field and F is its support.For a point T and a reference object A,if the probability that an observer make a description X is high,then the probability density at O is also high when X is known.This argument is proved using Bayes' theorem and can be viewed as the theoretical foundation to establish an uncertainty field.We also implemented a toolkit to generate uncertainty fields based on a number of spatial assertions.
Modeling data quality for risk assessment of GIS

Abstract:This paper presents a methodology to determine three data quality (DQ) risk characteristics: accuracy, comprehensiveness and nonmembership. The methodology provides a set of quantitative models to confirm the information quality risks for the database of the geographical information system (GIS). Four quantitative measures are introduced to examine how the quality risks of source information affect the quality of information outputs produced using the relational algebra operations Selection, Projection, and Cubic Product. It can be used to determine how quality risks associated with diverse data sources affect the derived data. The GIS is the prime source of information on the location of cables, and detection time strongly depends on whether maps indicate the presence of cables in the construction business. Poor data quality in the GIS can contribute to increased risk or higher risk avoidance costs. A case study provides a numerical example of the calculation of the trade-offs between risk and detection costs and provides an example of the calculation of the costs of data quality. We conclude that the model contributes valuable new insight.

Abstract:In real attributed networks, attribute uncertainty and missing attribute values are prevalent, significantly impacting network performance analysis. Existing methods for filling in missing values primarily addresses missing data in the dataset, often neglecting the attribute characteristics and data uncertainty of the network. This study focuses on an effective method to fill uncertain attribute values in attributed networks. First, a framework is proposed to fill missing values in attributed networks. Then, a community partitioning method based on both the attributes and structure of the network is introduced. Additionally, an approach for filling uncertain data in incomplete fuzzy soft sets is presented, providing a solution to the high complexity challenges found in existing methods. Finally, these two methods are combined to propose a new method for filling attribute values in attributed networks. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, tests are conducted using a synthetic network and real networks of different sizes. The results demonstrate that the proposed method performs excels in terms of filling accuracy, runtime, and stability.

Abstract:Locality information for specimens of geological, biological, and cultural objects is traditionally stored as textual descriptions. With an increasing demand for natural and cultural information, the lack of spatially explicit descriptions has become a major barrier to the management and analysis of these data using geographic information systems. In this paper, we propose a method to georeference descriptive data, using an uncertainty field model to represent the distribution of a locality based on two types of uncertainties: uncertainty of reference objects, and the uncertainty of spatial relationships. We propose probability distributions for each known form of these two types of uncertainties and present a probabilistic method to georeference localities based on the integration of different uncertainty sources.
A Review of Fuzzy Sets on Spatial Data Handling

Abstract:There exist lots of fuzzy phenomena in the nature and the ambiguity in the definition of the geographical objects. Traditional spatial data handling regards the real world as determinate objects and is almost incapable to handle the fuzzy phenomena. This has limited the development of GIS. Fuzzy set theory, as a powerful tool to solve the fuzziness, is deemed to be one of the most important methods in handling the uncertainty of spatial data. After the introduction of the concept and fundamental of fuzzy set theory, the research on fuzzy geographical object and fuzzy topological relation are discussed, then the application of fuzzy set theory in spatial data handling are reviewed from six aspects: the evaluation of land suitability, estimation of the thematic mapping area, extraction of the classified information from remote sensing images, the design of the geographical data base, modeling of fuzzy geographical objects and the integration of fuzzy set with other soft computational methods.

Abstract:Spatial data quality has become a topic research in the international geographic information systems.The focus of GIS spatial data quality research has changed the position accuracy and precision attribute into the multi-sources spatial data inconsistency in recent years.Based on the study results of multi-sources spatial data inconsistencies,spatial data inconsistency such as expression modes,measurement methods and processing strategies was intensively analyzed,and a new measurement method for space inconsistency called measurement methods of geometric adjacency degree based on area computation was proposed in this paper.The detailed measurement formula and derivational process was given.Finally,the prospect of intelligent handling of the multi-sources spatial data inconsistencies was reviewed.

Abstract:Quantification of all types of uncertainty helps to establish reliability in any analysis. This research focuses on uncertainty in two attribute levels of wetland classification and creates visualization tools to guide analysis of spatial uncertainty patterns over several scales. A novel variant of confusion matrix analysis compares the Cowardin and Hydrogeomorphic wetland classification systems, identifying areas and types of misclassification for binary and multivariate categories. The specific focus on uncertainty in the paper refers to categorical consistency, that is, agreement between the two classification systems, rather than comparing observed data to ground truth. Consistency is quantified using confusion matrix analysis. Aggregation across progressive focal windows transforms the confusion matrix into a multiscale data pyramid for quick determination of where attribute uncertainty is highly variant, and at what spatial resolutions classification inconsistencies emerge. The focal pyramids summarize precision, recall, and F1 scores to visualize classification differences across spatial scales. Findings show that the F1 scores appear most informative on agreement about wetlands misclassification at both coarse and fine attribute scales. The pyramid organizes multi-scale uncertainty in a single unified framework and can be "sliced" to view individual focal levels of attribute consistency. Results demonstrate how the confusion matrix can be used to quantify the percentage of a study area in which inconsistencies occur reflecting wetland presence and type. The research provides confusion metrics and display tools to focus attention on specific areas of large data sets where attribute uncertainty patterns may be complex, thus reducing land managers' workloads by highlighting areas of uncertainty where field checking might be appropriate, and improving analytics by providing visualization tools to quickly see where such areas occur.
