Abstract:DBSCAN is a well-known density-based clustering algorithm which offers advantages for finding clusters of arbitrary shapes compared to partitioning and hierarchical clustering methods. However, there are few papers studying the DBSCAN algorithm under the privacy preserving distributed data mining model, in which the data is distributed between two or more parties, and the parties cooperate to obtain the clustering results without revealing the data at the individual parties. In this paper, we address the problem of two-party privacy preserving DBSCAN clustering. We first propose two protocols for privacy preserving DBSCAN clustering over horizontally and vertically partitioned data respectively and then extend them to arbitrarily partitioned data. We also provide performance analysis and privacy proof of our solution.

Abstract:Data analytics (such as association rule mining and decision tree mining) can discover useful statistical knowledge from a big data set. But protecting the privacy of the data provider and the data user in the process of analytics is a serious issue. Usually, the privacy of both parties cannot be fully protected simultaneously by a classical algorithm. In this paper, we present a quantum protocol for data mining that can much better protect privacy than the known classical algorithms: (1) if both the data provider and the data user are honest, the data user can know nothing about the database except the statistical results, and the data provider can get nearly no information about the results mined by the data user; (2) if the data user is dishonest and tries to disclose private information of the other, she/he will be detected with a high probability; (3) if the data provider tries to disclose the privacy of the data user, she/he cannot get any useful information since the data user hides his privacy among noises.

Abstract:Data mining deals with automatic extraction of previously unknown patterns from large amounts of data. Organizations all over the world handle large amounts of data and are dependent on mining gigantic data sets for expansion of their enterprises. These data sets typically contain sensitive individual information, which consequently get exposed to the other parties. Though we cannot deny the benefits of knowledge discovery that comes through data mining, we should also ensure that data privacy is maintained in the event of data mining. Privacy preserving data mining is a specialized activity in which the data privacy is ensured during data mining. Data privacy is as important as the extracted knowledge and efforts that guarantee data privacy during data mining are encouraged. In this paper we propose a strategy that protects the data privacy during decision tree analysis of data mining process. We propose to add specific noise to the numeric attributes after exploring the decision tree of the original data. The obfuscated data then is presented to the second party for decision tree analysis. The decision tree obtained on the original data and the obfuscated data are similar but by using our method the data proper is not revealed to the second party during the mining process and hence the privacy will be preserved.

Abstract:Data mining is the way toward mining fascinating patterns or information from an enormous level of the database. Data mining additionally opens another risk to privacy and data security.One of the maximum significant themes in the research fieldis privacy-preserving DM (PPDM). Along these lines, the investigation of ensuring delicate information and securing sensitive mined snippets of data without yielding the utility of the information in a dispersed domain.Extracted information from the analysis can be rules, clusters, meaningful patterns, trends or classification models. Privacy breach occur at some stage in the communication of data and aggregation of data. So far, many effective methods and techniques have been developed for privacy-preserving data mining, but yields into information loss and side effects on data utility and data mining effectiveness downgraded. In the f ocal point of consideration on the viability of Data Mining, Privacy and rightness should be improved and to lessen the expense.

Abstract:To protect individual privacy in data mining, when a miner collects data from respondents, the respondents should remain anonymous. The existing technique of Anonymity-Preserving Data Collection partially solves this problem, but it assumes that the data do not contain any identifying information about the corresponding respondents. On the other hand, the existing technique of Privacy-Enhancing k-Anonymization can make the collected data anonymous by eliminating the identifying information. However, it assumes that each respondent submits her data through an unidentified communication channel. In this paper, we propose k-Anonymous Data Collection, which has the advantages of both Anonymity-Preserving Data Collection and Privacy-Enhancing k-Anonymization but does not rely on their assumptions described above. We give rigorous proofs for the correctness and privacy of our protocol, and experimental results for its efficiency. Furthermore, we extend our solution to the fully malicious model, in which a dishonest participant can deviate from the protocol and behave arbitrarily.

Abstract:Privacy preservation is one of the most important topics in data mining. The purpose is to discover accurate patterns without precise access to the original data. In order to improve the privacy preservation and mining accuracy, an effective method for privacy preserving association rule mining is presented in this paper. First, a new data preprocessing approach, Randomized Response with Partial Hiding (RRPH) is proposed. In this approach, the two privacy preserving strategies, data perturbation and query restriction, are combined to transform and hide the original data. Then, a privacy preserving association rule mining algorithm based on RRPH is presented. As shown in the theoretical analysis and the experimental results, privacy preserving association rule mining based on RRPH can achieve significant improvements in terms of privacy, accuracy, efficiency, and applicability.

Abstract:Machine learning has played an increasing important role in big data systems due to its capability of efficiently discovering valuable knowledge and hidden information. Often times big data such as healthcare systems or financial systems may involve with multiple organizations who may have different privacy policy, and may not explicitly share their data publicly while joint data processing may be a must. Thus, how to share big data among distributed data processing entities while mitigating privacy concerns becomes a challenging problem. Traditional methods rely on cryptographic tools and/or randomization to preserve privacy. Unfortunately, this alone may be inadequate for the emerging big data systems because they are mainly designed for traditional small-scale data sets. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to achieve privacy-preserving machine learning where the training data are distributed and each shared data portion is of large volume. Specifically, we utilize the data locality property of Apache Hadoop architecture and only a limited number of cryptographic operations at the Reduce() procedures to achieve privacy-preservation. We show that the proposed scheme is secure in the semi-honest model and use extensive simulations to demonstrate its scalability and correctness.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of various data collected by companies and organizations, there is an increasing need for the data owners to share their data with the third party for the purpose of data mining. Therefore, protecting the privacy of the shared data has received considerable attention from academia and industry. However, existing methods do not work well for distance-based mining algorithms. This paper proposes a novel privacy-preserving approach to support distance-based mining algorithms while reducing the shared data size. This approach transforms the shared data to discrete cosine transformation (DCT) coefficients, and adaptively selects DCT coefficients so as to form the compressed coefficient matrix. To enhance data privacy, this approach employs rotation-based transformation with modified constraints to process the compressed coefficient matrix. Extensive experiments show that the proposed approach achieves the best tradeoff between data privacy and mining quality comparing with other existing ones. Copyright (C) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Data mining is concerned with the extraction of useful knowledge from various types of data. Medical data mining has been a popular data mining topic of late. Compared with other data mining areas, medical data mining has some unique characteristics. Because medical files are related to human subjects, privacy concerns are taken more seriously than other data mining tasks. This paper applied data separation-based techniques to preserve privacy in classification of medical data. We take two approaches to protect privacy: one approach is to vertically partition the medical data and mine these partitioned data at multiple sites; the other approach is to horizontally split data across multiple sites. In the vertical partition approach, each site uses a portion of the attributes to compute its results, and the distributed results are assembled at a central trusted party using a majority-vote ensemble method. In the horizontal partition approach, data are distributed among several sites. Each site computes its own data, and a central trusted party is responsible to integrate these results. We implement these two approaches using medical datasets from UCI KDD archive and report the experimental results.

Abstract:The growing popularity and development of data mining technologies bring serious threat to the security of individual,’s sensitive information. An emerging research topic in data mining, known as privacy-preserving data mining (PPDM), has been extensively studied in recent years. The basic idea of PPDM is to modify the data in such a way so as to perform data mining algorithms effectively without compromising the security of sensitive information contained in the data. Current studies of PPDM mainly focus on how to reduce the privacy risk brought by data mining operations, while in fact, unwanted disclosure of sensitive information may also happen in the process of data collecting, data publishing, and information (i.e., the data mining results) delivering. In this paper, we view the privacy issues related to data mining from a wider perspective and investigate various approaches that can help to protect sensitive information. In particular, we identify four different types of users involved in data mining applications, namely, data provider, data collector, data miner, and decision maker. For each type of user, we discuss his privacy concerns and the methods that can be adopted to protect sensitive information. We briefly introduce the basics of related research topics, review state-of-the-art approaches, and present some preliminary thoughts on future research directions. Besides exploring the privacy-preserving approaches for each type of user, we also review the game theoretical approaches, which are proposed for analyzing the interactions among different users in a data mining scenario, each of whom has his own valuation on the sensitive information. By differentiating the responsibilities of different users with respect to security of sensitive information, we would like to provide some useful insights into the study of PPDM.

Abstract:Huge volume of data from domain specific applications such as medical, financial, telephone, shopping records and individuals are regularly generated. Sharing of these data is proved to be beneficial for data mining application. Since data mining often involves data that contains personally identifiable information and therefore releasing such data may result in privacy breaches. On one hand such data is an important asset to business decision making by analyzing it. On the other hand data privacy concerns may prevent data owners from sharing information for data analysis. In order to share data while preserving privacy, data owner must come up with a solution which achieves the dual goal of privacy preservation as well as accuracy of data mining task mainly clustering and classification. Privacy Preserving Data Publishing (PPDP) is a study of eliminating privacy threats like linkage attack while preserving data utility by anonymizing data set before publishing. Proposed work is an extension to k-anonymization where Privacy Gain (PrGain) has been computed for selective anonymization for set of tuples. Classification and clustering characteristics of original data and anonymized data using proposed algorithm have been evaluated in terms of information loss, execution time, and privacy achieved. Algorithm has been processed against standard data sets and analysis shows that values for sensitive attributes are being preserved with minimal information loss.

Abstract:With the distributed data mining technique having been widely used in a variety of fields, the privacy preserving issue of sensitive data has attracted more and more attention in recent years. Our major concern over privacy preserving in distributed data mining is the accuracy of the data mining results while privacy preserving is ensured. Corresponding to the horizontally partitioned data, this paper presents a new hybrid algorithm for privacy preserving distributed data mining. The main idea of the algorithm is to combine the method of random orthogonal matrix transformation with the proposed secure multi-party protocol of matrix product to achieve zero loss of accuracy in most data mining implementations.

Abstract:Many researches have been done for protecting people's privacy and sensitive information from being disclosed in data mining. Association rule mining can mine some sensitive information while discovering some useful knowledge. This paper focuses on how to preserve some restrictive patterns from being mined from the database. Based on the idea that removing one item in the sensitive transaction can decrease more than one restrictive patterns' support, we address a new algorithm to achieve privacy preserving. The experimental result shows that this approach can give a better effective in hiding restrictive patterns while minimizing the impact on the legitimate patterns mining and the database modification.
