Abstract:Social and Community Intelligence (SCI) represents an emerging area that aims at revealing individual/group behaviors, social interactions as well as community dynamics by mining the digital traces left by people while interacting with cyber-physical spaces. The digital traces are generated mainly from three information sources: Internet and Web applications, static infrastructure, mobile devices and wearable sensors. In this workshop we hope to get people from different disciplines together to share their visions and insights on how to tackle the challenges faced by SCI, such as participatory sensing, heterogeneous data fusion, intelligence extraction, privacy issues, and so on.

Abstract:In this paper, we present our recent progress of designing a real-time system, SocialAnalysis, to discover and summarize emergent social events from social media data streams. In social networks era, people always frequently post messages or comments about their activities and opinions. Hence, there exist temporal correlations between the physical world and virtual social networks, which can help us to monitor and track social events, detecting and positioning anomalous events before their outbreakings, so as to provide early warning.The key technologies in the system include: (1) Data denoising methods based on multi-features, which screens out the query-related event data from massive background data. (2) Abnormal events detection methods based on statistical learning, which can detect anomalies by analyzing and mining a series of observations and statistics on the time axis. (3) Geographical position recognition, which is used to recognize regions where abnormal events may happen.

Abstract:The Internet based cyber-physical world has profoundly changed the information environment for the development of artificial intelligence (AI), bringing a new wave of AI research and promoting it into the new era of AI 2.0. As one of the most prominent characteristics of research in AI 2.0 era, crowd intelligence has attracted much attention from both industry and research communities. Specifically, crowd intelligence provides a novel problem-solving paradigm through gathering the intelligence of crowds to address challenges. In particular, due to the rapid development of the sharing economy, crowd intelligence not only becomes a new approach to solving scientific challenges, but has also been integrated into all kinds of application scenarios in daily life, e.g., online-to-offline (O2O) application, real-time traffic monitoring, and logistics management. In this paper, we survey existing studies of crowd intelligence. First, we describe the concept of crowd intelligence, and explain its relationship to the existing related concepts, e.g., crowdsourcing and human computation. Then, we introduce four categories of representative crowd intelligence platforms. We summarize three core research problems and the state-of-the-art techniques of crowd intelligence. Finally, we discuss promising future research directions of crowd intelligence.

Abstract:Various kinds of social networks develop explosively, such as online social networks, scientific cooperation networks, athlete networks, airport passage networks, and so on. With the large number of participants and real-time property, social networks increasingly demonstrate their strength in information dissemination. Social computing has become a promising research area and attracts lots of attention. Analyzing and mining human behaviors, topological structure, and information diffusion in social networks can help to understand the essential mechanism of macroscopic phenomena, discover potential public interest, and provide early warnings of collective emergencies.

Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the First International Symposium on Social and Community Intelligence (SCI), associated with the International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp) 2011. The mission of the symposium is to provide an international forum for the discussion of challenges in the fields of SCI, including theoretical studies, practical issues, emerging technologies and applications. SCI gives researchers and practitioners a unique opportunity to share their perspectives with others interested in the various aspects of revealing the individual/group behaviors, social interactions, as well as community dynamics (e.g., city hot spots, traffic jams) by mining the digital traces left by people while interacting with cyber-physical spaces. The call for papers attracted 14 submissions from Asia, America and Europe. The program committee accepted 8 papers that cover a variety of topics, including Intelligent Social/ Community Services, Social Data Aggregation and Analysis, and Social Communication. In addition, the program includes two invited papers. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and developers in the SCI area.

Abstract:This paper presents the initiative design research and projects for developing the public oriented application in China based on the technology of social networking and ubiquitous computing. Follow the blooming of social networking service; social media begin to intervene deeply into people's ordinary life in China. Designers need new methodologies to promote the social participation, connect the social media with real world, and then take an action in urban life. Collective intelligence will create new design thinking and opportunities for solving the complicated social and urban problems. Two public-oriented projects based on collective intelligence are showed as examples, and hope to form a new framework for the further design research in the context of ubiquitous computing.

Abstract:Reaching consensus within larger social network groups has emerged as a pivotal concern in the digital age of connectivity. This article redefines group consensus as the emergence of collective intelligence resulting from self-organizing actions and interactions of individuals within a social network group. In our exploration of extant research on group consensus, we illuminate two frequently underestimated, yet noteworthy facets: Dynamism and emergence. In contrast to the conventional perspective of consensus as a mere outcome, we perceive it as an ongoing, dynamic process. This process encompasses self-organized communication and interaction among group members, collectively guiding the group towards cognitive convergence and viewpoint integration. Consequently, it is imperative to redirect our focus from the outcomes of group interactions to an examination of the relationships and processes underpinning consensus formation, thus elucidating the mechanisms responsible for the generation of group consensus. The amalgamation of cognitive contexts and accurate simplification of real-world scenarios for simulation and experimental analysis offers a pragmatic operational approach. This study contributes novel theoretical underpinnings and quantitative insights for establishing and sustaining group consensus within the realm of engineering management practices. Concurrently, it holds substantial importance for advancing the broader research landscape pertaining to social consensus.
2 SocialImpact : Bring Order to Online Underground Social Dynamics

Abstract:Existing research on net-centric attacks has focused on the detection of attack events on network side and the removal of rogue programs from client side. However, such approaches largely overlook the way on how attack tools and unwanted programs are developed and distributed. Recent studies in underground economy reveal that suspicious attackers heavily utilize online social networks to form special interest groups and distribute malicious code. Consequently, examining social dynamics, as a novel way to complement existing research efforts, is imperative to systematically identify attackers and tactically cope with net-centric threats. In this paper, we seek a way to understand and analyze social dynamics relevant to net-centric attacks and propose a suite of measures called SocialImpact for systematically discovering and mining adversarial evidence. We also demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of our approach by implementing a proof-of-concept prototype Cassandra with a case study on real-world data archived from the Internet.

Abstract:With the rapid development in artificial intelligence, social computing has evolved beyond social informatics toward the birth of social intelligence systems. This paper, therefore, takes initiatives to propose a social behaviour understanding framework with the use of deep neural networks for social and behavioural analysis. The integration of information fusion, person and object detection, social signal understanding, behaviour understanding, and context understanding plays a harmonious role to elicit social behaviours. Three systems, including depression detection, activity recognition and cognitive impairment screening, are developed to evidently demonstrate the importance of social intelligence. The study considerably contributes to the cumulative development of social computing and health informatics. It also provides a number of implications for academic bodies, healthcare practitioners, and developers of socially intelligent agents.

Abstract:Abstract There are generally hundreds of millions of nodes in social media, and they are connected to a huge social network through attention and fan relationships. The news is spread through this huge social network. This paper studies the acquisition technology of social media topic data and enterprise data. The topic positioning technology based on Sina meta search and topic related keywords is introduced, and the crawling efficiency of topic crawlers is analyzed. Aiming at the factors of diverse and variable webpage structure on the Internet, this paper proposes a new Web information extraction algorithm by studying the general laws existing in the webpage structure, combining DOM (Document Object Model) tree and DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) algorithm. Several links in the algorithm are introduced in detail, including Web page processing, DOM tree construction, segmented text content acquisition, and web content extraction based on the DBSCAN algorithm. The simulation results show that the intelligence culture, intelligence system, technology platform and intelligence organization ecological collaboration strategy under the extraction of DOM tree and DBSCAN information can improve the level of intelligence participation of all employees. There is a significant positive correlation between the level of participation and the level of the intelligence environment of all employees. According to the research results, the DOM tree and DBSCAN information proposed in this paper can extract the enterprise’s employee intelligence and the effective implementation of relevant collaborative strategies, which can provide guidance for the effective implementation of the employee intelligence.

Abstract:(1) Background: With the acceleration of globalization, various risks are intertwined and coupled, and community emergency management is facing greater pressure than before. The continuous development of digital technology has made it possible to empower community emergency management with digital technology. Therefore, it is urgent to have a clear understanding of the research status and future development direction of digital empowering community emergency management. (2) Methods: This study is based on the Web of Science database and utilizes the CiteSpace knowledge graph visualization method to analyze the research progress of community digital emergency management. (3) Results: The results indicate that from 2000 to 2024, the amount of research on community digital emergency management has been on the rise, involving multiple disciplines, but there has not been a close and mature cooperation network between different countries, institutions, and authors. The research topic has shifted from early single-emergency management to integration with emerging science and technology, with a greater emphasis on the role of communities. Big data, machine learning, technological innovation, digital healthcare, and community resilience are important research directions for the future. (4) Conclusions: In the future, we should strengthen cooperation in this field, overcome issues such as the digital divide and digital security, and promote further development of community digital emergency management.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) represents the future technology trend of sensing, computing, and communication. Under the Wisdom Web of Things (W2T) vision, the next-generation Internet will promote harmonious interaction among humans, computers, and things. Current research on IoT is primarily conducted from the perspective of identifying, connecting, and managing objects. In this paper, however, we attempt to enhance the IoT with intelligence and awareness under the W2T vision. By exploring the various interactions between humans and the IoT, we extract the “embedded” intelligence about individual, environment, and society, which can augment existing IoT systems with user, ambient, and social awareness. The characteristics, major applications, research issues, the reference architecture, as well as our ongoing efforts to embedded intelligence are also presented and discussed.

Abstract:Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis proximity to where data are captured based on artificial intelligence. Edge intelligence aims at enhancing data processing and protects the privacy and security of the data and users. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this article, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey of the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, i.e., edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare, and analyze the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, and so on. This article provides a comprehensive survey of edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarize the development of the emerging research fields and the current state of the art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical directions.

Abstract:During the past decades, the term “social computing” has become a promising interdisciplinary area in the intersection of computer science and social science. In this work, we conduct a data-driven study to understand the development of social computing using the data collected from Digital Bibliography and Library Project (DBLP), a representative computer science bibliography website. We have observed a series of trends in the development of social computing, including the evolution of the number of publications, popular keywords, top venues, international collaborations, and research topics. Our findings will be helpful for researchers and practitioners working in relevant fields.

Abstract:Online social media, such as Twitter and Instagram, democratized information broadcast, allowing anyone to share information about themselves and their surroundings at an unprecedented scale. The large volume of information thus posted on these media offer a new lens into the physical world through the eyes of the social network. The exploitation of this lens to inspect aspects of world state has recently been termed social sensing. The power of manipulating reality via the use (or intentional misuse) of social media opened concerns with issues ranging from radicalization by terror propaganda to potential manipulation of elections in mature democracies. Many important challenges and open research questions arise in this emerging field that aims to better understand how information can be extracted from the medium and what properties characterize the extracted information and the world it represents. Addressing the above challenges requires multi-disciplinary research at the intersection of computer science and social sciences that combines cyber-physical computing, sociology, sensor networks, social networks, cognition, data mining, estimation theory, data fusion, information theory, linguistics, machine learning, behavioral economics, and possibly others. This paper surveys important directions in social sensing, identifies current research challenges, and outlines avenues for future research.

Abstract:This chapter provides a critical survey of emergence definitions both from a conceptual and formal standpoint. The notions of downward / backward causation and weak / strong emergence are specially discussed, for application to complex social system with cognitive agents. Particular attention is devoted to the formal definitions introduced by (Muller 2004) and (Bonabeau & Dessalles, 1997), which are operative in multi-agent frameworks and make sense from both cognitive and social point of view.
