Abstract:In modern society, it is common for people to be active in many different online social networks at once. As new social network services arise every year, it remains a great challenge to integrate social data. Discovering multiple profiles of a single person across different social networks is a precondition for integration, but it is still challenging due to the inconsistency and disruption of the accessible information among social media networks (SMNs). Many studies have made efforts on users profiles, users contents, and network structure to address this issue, but the issue of how to consider all these information in a unified model and tackle them simultaneously still remains challenging. Considering that identical users tend to have partial similar friend relationship structures in different SMNs, especially friendship SMNs, we deepen the analysis of friend relationships (mutual following connections) in different SMNs, and propose PIFGM (Pairwise Identical Factor Graph Model), a novel factor graph model-based model, to address this problem by considering both user attributes and friend relationships across networks. We also present a distributed learning algorithm to handle large-scale social networks. We evaluate the proposed model on two different data collections: SNS and SR. Our experimental results validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed model. The proposed PIFGM significantly outperforms several alternative methods by up to approximately 1020 in terms of F1 and precision on SNS and SR respectively.
A Novel Ego-Centered Academic Community Detection Approach Via Factor Graph Model

Abstract:Extracting ego-centered community from large social networks is a practical problem in many real applications. Previous work for ego-centered community detection usually focuses on topological properties of networks, which ignore the actual social attributes between nodes. In this paper, we formalize the ego-centered community detection problem in a unified factor graph model and employ a parameter learning algorithm to estimate the topic-level social influence, the social relationship strength between nodes as well as community structures of networks. Based on the unified model we can obtain more meaningful ego community compared with traditional methods. Experimental results on co-author network demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Social influence, the phenomenon that the actions of a user can induce her/his friends to behave in a similar way, plays a key role in many (online) social systems. For example, a company wants to market a new product through the effect of "word of mouth'' in the social network. It wishes to find and convince a small number of influential users to adopt the product, and the goal is to trigger a large cascade of further adoptions. Fundamentally, we need to answer the following question: how to quantify the influence between two users in a large social network? To address this question, we propose a pair wise factor graph (PFG) model to model the social influence in social networks. An efficient algorithm is designed to learn the model and make inference. We further propose a dynamic factor graph (DFG) model to incorporate the time information. Experimental results on three different genres of data sets show that the proposed approaches can efficiently infer the dynamic social influence. The results are applied to the influence maximization problem, which aims to find a small subset of nodes (users) in a social network that could maximize the spread of influence. Experiments show that the proposed approach can facilitate the application.

Abstract:Modeling and measuring social influence is a major problem in Social Network Analysis. Existing models and methods could handle individual influence analysis conveniently, but they rarely estimate the social influence of communities which are ubiquitous in social networks. Based on the structures of online social networks, a community oriented influence analysis model is proposed. Then, we provide an algorithm called CommRank for calculating the social influence of communities. Since the algorithm combines both internal structural information and external interaction data of communities, it estimates community influence more precisely on multiple datasets. Experimental results also demonstrate that, at the cost of a little gain loss, CommRank can dramatically improve the efficiency when dealing with the influence maximization problem.

Abstract:This paper attempts to addresses the task of node classification in social networks. As we know, node classification in social networks is an important challenge for understanding the underlying graph with the linkage structure and node features. Compared with the traditional classification problem, we should not only use the node features, but also consider about the relationship between nodes. Besides, it is difficult to cost much time and energy to label every node in the large social networks. In this work, we use a factor graph model with partially-labeled data to solve these problems. Our experiments on two data sets (DBLP co-author network, Weibo) with multiple small tasks have demonstrated that our model works much better than the traditional classification algorithms.

Abstract:Social network analysis has been one of the research focuses with the developing of social media services. Social influence also attracts ever-increasing attention and interests from both the sociology and the data mining scholars, but the research of influence is mainly limited in the user level, the community level influence is rarely involved. In this paper, we develop a novel model to analyze and evaluate the community level influence and help the decision maker to comprehend the disparity in influence of different communities. This paper also proposes a simple heuristic node-selection strategy considering the community influence to spread influence, and the experiments of the spread of influence through the social network datasets prove the rationality of the proposed community influence analysis model.
Multi-Tasking Link Prediction On Coupled Networks Via The Factor Graph Model

Abstract:Link prediction is a fundamental problem in social systems, including the prediction of user interaction and the links between users and items, which is also referred to as recommendation. Previous works mainly focus on the prediction task independently, which predict either the links between users or the links between users and items. However, these two prediction tasks are always coupled with each other, where users' preferences will influence the formation of users' interaction in coupled social networks, and vice versa. In this paper, we proposed a multitasking factor graph model (MFG) for predicting the user interaction and links between users and items simultaneously. Firstly, we observed some interesting network transfer structures according to the feature analysis between the user-user network and user-item network. Sequently, we developed a MFG model based on these network transfer structure, which can transfer information mutually from one network to the other to solve the multitasking prediction problem. Extensive experiments conducted on two real-world coupled social networks demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology, compared with some other baseline algorithms.

Abstract:Heterogeneous influence detection across network nodes is an important task in network analysis. A community influence model (CIM) is proposed to allow nodes to be classified into different communities (i.e., clusters or groups) such that the nodes within the same community share the common influence parameter. Employing the quasi-maximum likelihood approach, together with the fused lasso-type penalty, both the number of communities and the influence parameters can be estimated without imposing any specific distribution assumption on the error terms. The resulting estimators are shown to enjoy the oracle property; namely, they perform as well as if the true underlying network structure were known in advance. The proposed approach is also applicable for identifying influential nodes in a homogeneous setting. The performance of our method is illustrated via simulation studies and two empirical examples using stock data and coauthor citation data, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the phenomenon that individuals join into and jump from the organizations in the society, we propose a dynamic community model to construct social networks. Two parameters are adopted in our model, one is the communication rate P-a that denotes the connection strength in the organization and the other is the turnover rate P-b, that stands for the frequency of jumping among the organizations. Based on simulations, we analyze not only the degree distribution, the clustering coefficient, the average distance and the network diameter but also the group distribution which is closely related to their community structure. Moreover, we discover that the networks generated by the proposed model possess the small-world property and can well reproduce the networks of social contacts.

Abstract:Directed and undirected probabilistic graphical models have been successfully used in community detection in recent years, but existing graphical model based methods usually only use one type of probabilistic graphical model to discover communities. However, directed and undirected graphical models have their own advantages for characterizing different network information (attribute information and network topology). Intuitively, we can make use of the merit of both kinds of models by combining them into a unified model. However, combining directed and undirected graphical models is difficult, as they have different properties which prevent parameter sharing and joint training. In this article, we propose a unified model which integrates directed and undirected graphical models by transforming both them into factor graph. In addition, as network topology and attribute information may contain different degrees of noises, we add a selective attention layer to learn the reliable weight of each type of information source in node granularity. For training the model, we derive an iterative belief propagation algorithm to train all the parameters simultaneously. Extensive experiments on real networks and artificial benchmarks show the superiority of our approach over existing methods.

Abstract:We study the integration of individuals attributes to infer their influence ability in social network in this paper. The influence between individuals is usually asymmetric and can propagate via edges gradually. We suggest an Influence Factor Graph(IFG) which can integrate different node and edge features into a uniform inferring model. And for each node the model can compute personalized influence ability value. Experiment results in Zarchary and Wikipedia co-editing social networks show that, the model can depict influence reasonably and reveal some interesting social influence rules.

Abstract:Community structure has an important influence on the structural and dynamic characteristics of the complex systems. So it has attracted a large number of researchers. However, due to its complexity, the mechanism of action of the community structure is still not clear to this day. In this paper, some features of the community structure have been discussed. And a constraint model of the community has been deduced. This model is effective to identify the communities. And especially, it is effective to identify the overlapping nodes between the communities. Then a community detection algorithm, which has linear time complexity, is proposed based on this constraint model, a proposed node similarity model and the Modularity Q. Through some experiments on a series of real-world and synthetic networks, the high performances of the algorithm and the constraint model have been illustrated.

Abstract:Real networks such as e-mail, co-author and peer-to-peer networks can be modeled as graphs. Community mining on graphs has attracted more and more attentions in recent years. It not only can help to identify the overall structures of networks, but also can help to discover the latent rules of community evolution. Community mining on dynamic graphs has not been studied thoroughly, although that on static graphs has been exploited extensively. Based on time-sequence, the community mining including community detection and analysis on dynamic graphs is researched in this paper. And a two-step model is presented to discover the dynamic community structure. The effectiveness and efficiency of the model are validated by experiments on real networks. Results show that the model has a good trade-off between the effectiveness and efficiency in discovering communities.

Abstract:Community structures detection in signed network is very important for understanding not only the topology structures of signed networks, but also the functions of them, such as information diffusion, epidemic spreading, etc. In this paper, we develop a joint nonnegative matrix factorization model to detect community structures. In addition, we propose modified partition density to evaluate the quality of community structures. We use it to determine the appropriate number of communities. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated based on both synthetic and real-world networks.

Abstract:The matrix factorization recommendation algorithm based on direct social relations only considers the direct social relations of users,but neglects the indirect social relations of users. However,there is a problem of data sparseness in direct social relation be-tween users,which affects the accuracy of the recommendation results. Users in the same community often have similarities in some ways,which influences each other. In this paper,we propose a matrix factorization recommendation algorithm that integrates the com-munity structure and social influence. The algorithm uses both user rating data and social network structure information to calculate so-cial influence among users and build recommendation model. Our algorithm discovers the user′s community and combines the commu-nity information to calculate the user′s personal influence. To enhance the recommendation effect,the influence between users and the personal influence are combined to get the asymmetric influence. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm can get better recom-mendation results than the existing algorithms.
High-dimensional Factor Analysis for Network-linked Data

Abstract:Factor analysis is a widely used statistical tool in many scientific disciplines, such as psychology, economics, and sociology. As observations linked by networks become increasingly common, incorporating network structures into factor analysis remains an open problem. In this paper, we focus on high-dimensional factor analysis involving network-connected observations, and propose a generalized factor model with latent factors that account for both the network structure and the dependence structure among high-dimensional variables. These latent factors can be shared by the high-dimensional variables and the network, or exclusively applied to either of them. We develop a computationally efficient estimation procedure and establish asymptotic inferential theories. Notably, we show that by borrowing information from the network, the proposed estimator of the factor loading matrix achieves optimal asymptotic variance under much milder identifiability constraints than existing literature. Furthermore, we develop a hypothesis testing procedure to tackle the challenge of discerning the shared and individual latent factors' structure. The finite sample performance of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulation studies and a real-world dataset involving a statistician co-authorship network.

Abstract:In recent years, researchers have paid more attention to influence maximization problem. This problem is firstly defined by Domingos and Richardson as follows: finding a small set of individuals in a social network that could maximize the spread of influence under certain influence cascade model. To solve this issue, researchers proposed different algorithms. However, in all of these algorithms, the size of the chosen individuals -k, is assigned in advance. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary exploration on the relationship between the size of the chosen set and the corresponding influence spread. We propose two metrics to analyze the factor k. Then we further consider the performance metric of the chosen set, which can be described by the stability of the chosen set. Experimental results on two real social networks show the efficiency and necessity of our proposed metrics.

Abstract:One of the most important problems towards studying complicated networks is community detection. The methodology of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) has lately emerged as among the hottest research issues within community detection because of its ability to reveal natural structures and trends in high-dimensional information. The primary difficulty is that most community detection methods are hampered by the issue of nodes belonging to several communities. We will use the NMF technique in this work to tackle this issue by creating a novel mathematical function. In addition, we will include a regularized factor for simulating latent embedding space and a correlation factor to prevent overlap inside nodes that belong to various communities. Following that, the entire objective function will employ an optimization approach to arrive at the variable values that are ideal. Finally, we assess the effectiveness of different methodologies on real networks. According to experimental findings, the introduced approach is better among the other state-of-the-art methodology.
User-Centric Location Prediction in Mobile Social Networks - A Factor Graph Learning Approach.

Abstract:Recently, location prediction has attracted considerable research effort because of the popularity of location-based services, such as mobile advertising and recommendations. With the unprecedented proliferation of mobile social networks, we are able to use location service to bridge the online and offline worlds. Different from existing studies, in this paper we promote a user-centric location prediction approach by leveraging a user's local mobile social information without involving other users' location privacy. We propose a factor graph learning model that integrates not only user's social and network information, but also the correlations between user's locations into a unified framework. Furthermore, we use ReliefF algorithm to select user-specific significant features for location prediction and define the measure of location entropy to study the similarity between location, network status and social behavior. We conduct extensive experiments using a real-world dataset, which shows that our model performs much better in location prediction compared with several classic methods.

Abstract:With the development of network services and location‐based systems, many mobile applications begin to use users’ geographical location to provide better services. In terms of social networks, geographical location is actively shared by users. In some applications with recommendation services, before the geographical location recommendation is provided, the authors have to obtain user's permission. This kind of social network integrated with geographical location information is called location‐based social networks (abbreviate for LBSNs). In the LBSN, each user has location information when he or she checked in hotels or feature spots. Based on this information, they can identify user's trajectory of movement behaviour and activity patterns. In general, if there is friendship between two users, their trajectories in reality are likely to be similar. In this study, according to user's geographical location information over a period of time, they explore whether there exists friendly relationship between two users based on trajectory similarity and the structure theory of graphs. In particular, they propose a new factor function and a factor graph model based on user's geographical location to predict the friendship between two users in the real LBSN.
