Abstract:Valiant introduced matchgate computation and holographic algorithms. A number of seemingly exponential time problems can be solved by this novel algorithmic paradigm in polynomial time. We show that, in a very strong sense, matchgate computations and holographic algorithms based on them provide a universal methodology to a broad class of counting problems studied in statistical physics community for decades. They capture precisely those problems which are #P-hard on general graphs but computable in polynomial time on planar graphs. More precisely, we prove complexity dichotomy theorems in the framework of counting CSP problems. The local constraint functions take Boolean inputs, and can be arbitrary real-valued symmetric functions. We prove that, every problem in this class belongs to precisely three categories: (1) those which are tractable (i.e., polynomial time computable) on general graphs, or (2) those which are \#P-hard on general graphs but ractable on planar graphs, or (3) those which are #P-hard even on planar graphs. The classification criteria are explicit. Moreover, problems in category (2) are tractable on planar graphs precisely by holographic algorithms with matchgates.

Abstract:Holant problem is a general framework to study the computational complexity of counting problems. We prove a complexity dichotomy theorem for Holant problems over Boolean domain with non-negative weights. It is the first complete Holant dichotomy where constraint functions are not necessarily symmetric. Holant problems are indeed read-twice $\#$CSPs. Intuitively, some $\#$CSPs that are $\#$P-hard become tractable when restricting to read-twice instances. To capture them, we introduce the Block-rank-one condition. It turns out that the condition leads to a clear separation. If a function set $\mathcal{F}$ satisfies the condition, then $\mathcal{F}$ is of affine type or product type. Otherwise (a) $\mathrm{Holant}(\mathcal{F})$ is $\#$P-hard; or (b) every function in $\mathcal{F}$ is a tensor product of functions of arity at most 2; or (c) $\mathcal{F}$ is transformable to a product type by some real orthogonal matrix. Holographic transformations play an important role in both the hardness proof and the characterization of tractability.

Abstract:Holant problems provide a novel framework to study the complexity of counting problems. It is a refinement to counting constraint satisfaction problems (#CSP) with a more explicit role for the constraint functions. Both graph homomorphisms and #CSP can be viewed as special cases of Holant problems. For approximation algorithms on Holant problems, the attention is focused on proving zero-freeness of the partition functions and establishing fully polynomial-time approximation schemes (FPTAS) using the Taylor expansion method. In this paper, we study the Holant problems defined by a real constraint function satisfying a generalized second-order recurrence. We present fully polynomial-time (deterministic or randomized) approximation schemes for the Holant problems except for a couple of cases. Our algorithms are established in two ways: 1) we construct holographic transformations from the Holant problems to the Ising model, and obtain the algorithms using the approaches with respect to the Ising model; 2) we prove the zero-freeness of the Holant problems, and present an algorithm based on the Taylor expansion method. In addition, for most of the other cases, there exist approximation-preserving reductions between the Holant problems and the problem of counting perfect matchings, which is a central open problem in approximate counting. Picturing Counting Reductions with the ZH-Calculus

Abstract:Counting the solutions to Boolean formulae defines the problem #SAT, which is complete for the complexity class #P. We use the ZH-calculus, a universal and complete graphical language for linear maps which naturally encodes counting problems in terms of diagrams, to give graphical reductions from #SAT to several related counting problems. Some of these graphical reductions, like to #2SAT, are substantially simpler than known reductions via the matrix permanent. Additionally, our approach allows us to consider the case of counting solutions modulo an integer on equal footing. Finally, since the ZH-calculus was originally introduced to reason about quantum computing, we show that the problem of evaluating ZH-diagrams in the fragment corresponding to the Clifford+T gateset, is in FP^#P. Our results show that graphical calculi represent an intuitive and useful framework for reasoning about counting problems.

Abstract:We employ techniques from group theory to show that, in many cases, counting problems on graphs are almost as hard to solve in a small number of instances as they are in all instances. Specifically, we show the following results. 1. Goldreich (2020) asks if, for every constant $\delta < 1 / 2$, there is an $\tilde{O} \left( n^2 \right)$-time randomized reduction from computing the number of $k$-cliques modulo $2$ with a success probability of greater than $2 / 3$ to computing the number of $k$-cliques modulo $2$ with an error probability of at most $\delta$. In this work, we show that for almost all choices of the $\delta 2^{n \choose 2}$ corrupt answers within the average-case solver, we have a reduction taking $\tilde{O} \left( n^2 \right)$-time and tolerating an error probability of $\delta$ in the average-case solver for any constant $\delta < 1 / 2$. By "almost all", we mean that if we choose, with equal probability, any subset $S \subset \{0,1\}^{n \choose 2}$ with $|S| = \delta2^{n \choose 2}$, then with a probability of $1-2^{-\Omega \left( n^2 \right)}$, we can use an average-case solver corrupt on $S$ to obtain a probabilistic algorithm. 2. Inspired by the work of Goldreich and Rothblum in FOCS 2018 to take the weighted versions of the graph counting problems, we prove that if the RETH is true, then for a prime $p = \Theta \left( 2^n \right)$, the problem of counting the number of unique Hamiltonian cycles modulo $p$ on $n$-vertex directed multigraphs and the problem of counting the number of unique half-cliques modulo $p$ on $n$-vertex undirected multigraphs, both require exponential time to compute correctly on even a $1 / 2^{n/\log n}$-fraction of instances. Meanwhile, simply printing $0$ on all inputs is correct on at least a $\Omega \left( 1 / 2^n \right)$-fraction of instances.

A Dichotomy Theorem for the Approximate Counting of Complex-Weighted Bounded-Degree Boolean CSPs

Abstract:We determine the computational complexity of approximately counting the total weight of variable assignments for every complex-weighted Boolean constraint satisfaction problem (or CSP) with any number of additional unary (i.e., arity 1) constraints, particularly, when degrees of input instances are bounded from above by a fixed constant. All degree-1 counting CSPs are obviously solvable in polynomial time. When the instance's degree is more than two, we present a dichotomy theorem that classifies all counting CSPs admitting free unary constraints into exactly two categories. This classification theorem extends, to complex-weighted problems, an earlier result on the approximation complexity of unweighted counting Boolean CSPs of bounded degree. The framework of the proof of our theorem is based on a theory of signature developed from Valiant's holographic algorithms that can efficiently solve seemingly intractable counting CSPs. Despite the use of arbitrary complex weight, our proof of the classification theorem is rather elementary and intuitive due to an extensive use of a novel notion of limited T-constructibility. For the remaining degree-2 problems, in contrast, they are as hard to approximate as Holant problems, which are a generalization of counting CSPs.

Abstract:We prove a complexity dichotomy theorem for symmetric complex-weighted Boolean #CSP when the constraint graph of the input must be planar. The problems that are #P-hard over general graphs but tractable over planar graphs are precisely those with a holographic reduction to matchgates. This generalizes a theorem of Cai, Lu, and Xia for the case of real weights. We also obtain a dichotomy theorem for a symmetric arity 4 signature with complex weights in the planar Holant framework, which we use in the proof of our #CSP dichotomy. In particular, we reduce the problem of evaluating the Tutte polynomial of a planar graph at the point (3,3) to counting the number of Eulerian orientations over planar 4-regular graphs to show the latter is #P-hard. This strengthens a theorem by Huang and Lu to the planar setting. Our proof techniques combine new ideas with refinements and extensions of existing techniques. These include planar pairings, the recursive unary construction, the anti-gadget technique, and pinning in the Hadamard basis.

Abstract:A homomorphism from a graph G to a graph H is a function from V ( G ) to V ( H ) that preserves edges. Many combinatorial structures that arise in mathematics and in computer science can be represented naturally as graph homomorphisms and as weighted sums of graph homomorphisms. In this article, we study the complexity of counting homomorphisms modulo 2. The complexity of modular counting was introduced by Papadimitriou and Zachos and it has been pioneered by Valiant who famously introduced a problem for which counting modulo 7 is easy but counting modulo 2 is intractable. Modular counting provides a rich setting in which to study the structure of homomorphism problems. In this case, the structure of the graph H has a big influence on the complexity of the problem. Thus, our approach is graph-theoretic. We give a complete solution for the class of cactus graphs, which are connected graphs in which every edge belongs to at most one cycle. Cactus graphs arise in many applications such as the modelling of wireless sensor networks and the comparison of genomes. We show that, for some cactus graphs H , counting homomorphisms to H modulo 2 can be done in polynomial time. For every other fixed cactus graph H , the problem is complete in the complexity class ⊕ P , which is a wide complexity class to which every problem in the polynomial hierarchy can be reduced (using randomised reductions). Determining which H lead to tractable problems can be done in polynomial time. Our result builds upon the work of Faben and Jerrum, who gave a dichotomy for the case in which H is a tree.

Abstract:Many NP-hard graph problems become easy for some classes of graphs, such as coloring is easy for bipartite graphs, but NP-hard in general. So we can ask question like when does a hard problem become easy? What is the minimum substructure for which the problem remains hard? We use the notion of boundary classes to study such questions. In this paper, we introduce a method for transforming the boundary class of one NP-hard graph problem into a boundary class for another problem. If $\Pi$ and $\Gamma$ are two NP-hard graph problems where $\Pi$ is reducible to $\Gamma$, we transform a boundary class of $\Pi$ into a boundary class of $\Gamma$. More formally if $\Pi$ is reducible to $\Gamma$, where the reduction is bijective and it maps hereditary classes of graphs to hereditary classes of graphs, then $X$ is a boundary class of $\Pi$ if and only if the image of $X$ under the reduction is a boundary class of $\Gamma$. This gives us a relationship between boundary classes and reducibility among several NP-hard problems. To show the strength of our main result, we apply our theorem to obtain some previously unknown boundary classes for a few graph problems namely; vertex-cover, clique, traveling-salesperson, bounded-degree-spanning-tree, subgraph-isomorphism and clique-cover.

Abstract:Can you decide if there is a coincidence in the numbers counting two different combinatorial objects? For example, can you decide if two regions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ have the same number of domino tilings? There are two versions of the problem, with $2\times 1 \times 1$ and $2\times 2 \times 1$ boxes. We prove that in both cases the coincidence problem is not in the polynomial hierarchy unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to a finite level. While the conclusions are the same, the proofs are notably different and generalize in different directions. We proceed to explore the coincidence problem for counting independent sets and matchings in graphs, matroid bases, order ideals and linear extensions in posets, permutation patterns, and the Kronecker coefficients. We also make a number of conjectures for counting other combinatorial objects such as plane triangulations, contingency tables, standard Young tableaux, reduced factorizations and the Littlewood--Richardson coefficients.

Abstract:We show that the propositional model counting problem #SAT for CNF-formulas with hypergraphs that allow a disjoint branches decomposition can be solved in polynomial time. We show that this class of hypergraphs is incomparable to hypergraphs of bounded incidence cliquewidth which were the biggest class of hypergraphs for which #SAT was known to be solvable in polynomial time so far. Furthermore, we present a polynomial time algorithm that computes a disjoint branches decomposition of a given hypergraph if it exists and rejects otherwise. Finally, we show that some slight extensions of the class of hypergraphs with disjoint branches decompositions lead to intractable #SAT, leaving open how to generalize the counting result of this paper.

Abstract:This paper continues to study the connection between reverse mathematics and Weihrauch reducibility. In particular, we study the problems formed from Maltsev's theorem on the order types of countable ordered groups. Solomon showed that the theorem is equivalent to $\mathsf{\Pi_1^1}$-$\mathsf{CA_0}$, the strongest of the big five subsystems of second order arithmetic. We show that the strength of the theorem comes from having a dense linear order without endpoints in its order type. Then, we show that for the related Weihrauch problem to be strong enough to be equivalent to $\mathsf{\hat{WF}}$ (the analog problem of $\mathsf{\Pi_1^1}$-$\mathsf{CA_0}$), an order-preserving function is necessary in the output. Without the order-preserving function, the problems are very much to the side compared to analog problems of the big five.

Abstract:We study two computational problems, parameterised by a fixed tree H. #HomsTo(H) is the problem of counting homomorphisms from an input graph G to H. #WHomsTo(H) is the problem of counting weighted homomorphisms to H, given an input graph G and a weight function for each vertex v of G. Even though H is a tree, these problems turn out to be sufficiently rich to capture all of the known approximation behaviour in #P. We give a complete trichotomy for #WHomsTo(H). If H is a star then #WHomsTo(H) is in FP. If H is not a star but it does not contain a certain induced subgraph J_3 then #WHomsTo(H) is equivalent under approximation-preserving (AP) reductions to #BIS, the problem of counting independent sets in a bipartite graph. This problem is complete for the class #RHPi_1 under AP-reductions. Finally, if H contains an induced J_3 then #WHomsTo(H) is equivalent under AP-reductions to #SAT, the problem of counting satisfying assignments to a CNF Boolean formula. Thus, #WHomsTo(H) is complete for #P under AP-reductions. The results are similar for #HomsTo(H) except that a rich structure emerges if H contains an induced J_3. We show that there are trees H for which #HomsTo(H) is #SAT-equivalent (disproving a plausible conjecture of Kelk). There is an interesting connection between these homomorphism-counting problems and the problem of approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Potts model. In particular, we show that for a family of graphs J_q, parameterised by a positive integer q, the problem #HomsTo(H) is AP-interreducible with the problem of approximating the partition function of the q-state Potts model. It was not previously known that the Potts model had a homomorphism-counting interpretation. We use this connection to obtain some additional upper bounds for the approximation complexity of #HomsTo(J_q).

Counting Solutions to Conjunctive Queries: Structural and Hybrid Tractability

Abstract:Counting the number of answers to conjunctive queries is a fundamental problem in databases that, under standard assumptions, does not have an efficient solution. The issue is inherently #P-hard, extending even to classes of acyclic instances. To address this, we pinpoint tractable classes by examining the structural properties of instances and introducing the novel concept of #-hypertree decomposition. We establish the feasibility of counting answers in polynomial time for classes of queries featuring bounded #-hypertree width. Additionally, employing novel techniques from the realm of fixed-parameter computational complexity, we prove that, for bounded arity queries, the bounded #-hypertree width property precisely delineates the frontier of tractability for the counting problem. This result closes an important gap in our understanding of the complexity of such a basic problem for conjunctive queries and, equivalently, for constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). Drawing upon #-hypertree decompositions, a ''hybrid'' decomposition method emerges. This approach leverages both the structural characteristics of the query and properties intrinsic to the input database, including keys or other (weaker) degree constraints that limit the permissible combinations of values. Intuitively, these features may introduce distinct structural properties that elude identification through the ''worst-possible database'' perspective inherent in purely structural methods.

Abstract:The Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) has been intensively studied in many areas of computer science and mathematics. The approach to the CSP based on tools from universal algebra turned out to be the most successful one to study the complexity and algorithms for this problem. Several techniques have been developed over two decades. One of them is through associating edge-colored graphs with algebras and studying how the properties of algebras are related with the structure of the associated graphs. This approach has been introduced in our previous two papers (A.Bulatov, Local structure of idempotent algebras I,II. <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2006.09599" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.09599">arXiv:2006.09599</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2006.10239" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.10239">arXiv:2006.10239</a>, 2020). In this paper we further advance it by introducing new structural properties of finite idempotent algebras omitting type 1 such as separation congruences, collapsing polynomials, and their implications for the structure of subdirect products of finite algebras. This paper also provides the algebraic background for our proof of Feder-Vardi Dichotomy Conjecture (A. Bulatov, A Dichotomy Theorem for Nonuniform CSPs. FOCS 2017: 319-330).

Approximate Counting via Correlation Decay on Planar Graphs

Abstract:We show for a broad class of counting problems, correlation decay (strong spatial mixing) implies FPTAS on planar graphs. The framework for the counting problems considered by us is the Holant problems with arbitrary constant-size domain and symmetric constraint functions. We define a notion of regularity on the constraint functions, which covers a wide range of natural and important counting problems, including all multi-state spin systems, counting graph homomorphisms, counting weighted matchings or perfect matchings, the subgraphs world problem transformed from the ferromagnetic Ising model, and all counting CSPs and Holant problems with symmetric constraint functions of constant arity. The core of our algorithm is a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm which computes the exact values of the Holant problems with regular constraint functions on graphs of bounded treewidth. By utilizing the locally tree-like property of apex-minor-free families of graphs, the parameterized exact algorithm implies an FPTAS for the Holant problem on these graph families whenever the Gibbs measure defined by the problem exhibits strong spatial mixing. We further extend the recursive coupling technique to Holant problems and establish strong spatial mixing for the ferromagnetic Potts model and the subgraphs world problem. As consequences, we have new deterministic approximation algorithms on planar graphs and all apex-minor-free graphs for several counting problems.

Abstract:We investigate the complexity of parameterised holant problems $\textsc{p-Holant}(\mathcal{S})$ for families of signatures~$\mathcal{S}$. The parameterised holant framework was introduced by Curticapean in 2015 as a counter-part to the classical theory of holographic reductions and algorithms and it constitutes an extensive family of coloured and weighted counting constraint satisfaction problems on graph-like structures, encoding as special cases various well-studied counting problems in parameterised and fine-grained complexity theory such as counting edge-colourful $k$-matchings, graph-factors, Eulerian orientations or, subgraphs with weighted degree constraints. We establish an exhaustive complexity trichotomy along the set of signatures $\mathcal{S}$: Depending on $\mathcal{S}$, $\textsc{p-Holant}(\mathcal{S})$ is: (1) solvable in FPT-near-linear time (i.e. $f(k)\cdot \tilde{\mathcal{O}}(|x|)$); (2) solvable in "FPT-matrix-multiplication time" (i.e. $f(k)\cdot {\mathcal{O}}(n^{\omega})$) but not solvable in FPT-near-linear time unless the Triangle Conjecture fails; or (3) #W[1]-complete and no significant improvement over brute force is possible unless ETH fails. This classification reveals a significant and surprising gap in the complexity landscape of parameterised Holants: Not only is every instance either fixed-parameter tractable or #W[1]-complete, but additionally, every FPT instance is solvable in time $f(k)\cdot {\mathcal{O}}(n^{\omega})$. We also establish a complete classification for a natural uncoloured version of parameterised holant problem $\textsc{p-UnColHolant}(\mathcal{S})$, which encodes as special cases the non-coloured analogues of the aforementioned examples. We show that the complexity of $\textsc{p-UnColHolant}(\mathcal{S})$ is different: Depending on $\mathcal{S}$ all instances are either solvable in FPT-near-linear time, or #W[1]-complete.

A bridge between the minimal doubly resolving set problem in (folded) hypercubes and the coin weighing problem

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the minimal doubly resolving set problem in Hamming graphs, hypercubes and folded hypercubes. We prove that the minimal doubly resolving set problem in hypercubes is equivalent to the coin weighing problem. Then we answer an open question on the minimal doubly resolving set problem in hypercubes. We disprove a conjecture on the metric dimension problem in folded hypercubes and give some asymptotic results for the metric dimension and the minimal doubly resolving set problems in Hamming graphs and folded hypercubes by establishing connections between these problems. Using the Lindström's method for the coin weighing problem, we give an efficient algorithm for the minimal doubly resolving set problem in hypercubes and report some new upper bounds. We also prove that the minimal doubly resolving set problem is NP-hard even restrict on split graphs, bipartite graphs and co-bipartite graphs.
