Abstract:The growing usage of mobile devices has led to proliferation of many mobile applications. A growing trend in mobile applications is centered on mobile landmark recognition. It is a new mobile application that recognizes a captured landmark using the mobile device and retrieves related information. This paper will present a survey on mobile landmark recognition for information retrieval. A general overview of existing mobile landmark recognition systems will be summarized. The techniques and algorithms used in the literatures, including content analysis of landmarks and classification methods for recognition, will be described.

Abstract:Mobile recommender systems target on recommending the right product or information to the right mobile users at anytime and anywhere. It is well known that the contextual information is often the key for the performances of mobile recommendations. Therefore, in this paper, we provide a focused survey of the recent development of context-aware mobile recommendations. After briefly reviewing the state-of-the-art of recommender systems, we first discuss the general notion of mobile context and how the contextual information is collected. Then, we introduce the existing approaches to exploit contextual information for modeling mobile recommendations. Furthermore, we summarize several existing recommendation tasks in the mobile scenarios, such as the recommendations in the tourism domain. Finally, we discuss some key issues that are still critical in the field of context-aware mobile recommendations, including the privacy problem, the energy efficiency issues, and the design of user interfaces.

Abstract:With the rapid development of mobile phone, the users have been increasing sharply, and the knowledge about mobile phone involves more widely subjects and its quantity is greater and larger. As a consequence, the discriminations of recognition are more obviously among the agents related to mobile phone. The organization mode of the unstructured and non-formal mobile knowledge is seriously hampering the knowledge sharing and human-computer interaction. How to make these knowledge be shared and reused is still a difficult problem what the knowledge engineers and semantic web have been facing, therefore, this paper presents the construction of the MO (Mobile Ontology) which lays a solid foundation of sharable and reusable knowledge. Firstly, the mobile ontology base is created by the Protege4.1, which make the descriptions of the concept, attribute, and instance of the mobile knowledge formally, so as to the mobile knowledge can be machine-readable and reasoning-automated. Finally, this paper shows the knowledge retrieval of mobile ontology base based on SPARQL, which is helpful for the designers, repairers and users of mobile to get the knowledge from ontology base. The experiment indicates that the proposed method improve the efficiency and reliability of the knowledge retrieval, and provide the necessary vocabulary for the semantic web of the mobile domain.

Abstract:Car tourism systems are becoming popular nowadays, which are actually kinds of information services. This paper presents a context-aware information service system for car touring, named ScudMobile, which addresses some deficiencies of current tourist systems. It has three main features 1) ontology-based knowledge representation makes it easier to share context and information among terminals and servers; 2) Because of information pre-fetch strategy, ScudMobile will not restricted by infrastructure and be a good complement to current systems. 3) it is totally context-aware. The gathering, representation and presentation of information are completely according to both user context and device context.

Abstract:Mobile search is one of the emerging and promising fields for researchers and practitioners. Nowadays, in consideration of screen size and navigability, current PC web search engines and information retrieval approaches may hardly be transplanted onto mobile search platforms directly. This paper presents an efficient approach to retrieving a compact set of differentiated documents which is information equivalent to the set of all documents satisfying query criteria. In doing so, based upon the idea [7] that extracts a representative document from each class derived from the transitive closure of a documents’ similarity matrix, the paper proposes an incremental strategy to deal with the computational complexity in generating the transitive closure and respective classes, which becomes crucial in massive data and mobile search applications. Theoretical analysis and data experiments show the advantage of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Nowadays, it is very convenient to capture photos by a smart phone. As using, the smart phone is a convenient way to share what users experienced anytime and anywhere through social networks, it is very possible that we capture multiple photos to make sure the content is well photographed. In this paper, an effective scalable mobile image retrieval approach is proposed by exploring contextual salient information for the input query image. Our goal is to explore the high-level semantic information of an image by finding the contextual saliency from multiple relevant photos rather than solely using the input image. Thus, the proposed mobile image retrieval approach first determines the relevant photos according to visual similarity, then mines salient features by exploring contextual saliency from multiple relevant images, and finally determines contributions of salient features for scalable retrieval. Compared with the existing mobile-based image retrieval approaches, our approach requires less bandwidth and has better retrieval performance. We can carry out retrieval with <200-B data, which is <5% of existing approaches. Most importantly, when the bandwidth is limited, we can rank the transmitted features according to their contributions to retrieval. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:How to provide dynamic location-based service and increase the information retrieve accuracy especially in the limited mobile screen have become the important research areas in the development of mobile location-based services. Considering different service requirements, this paper firstly proposes multiple information retrieve modes as Fuzzy Constraint Keywords based Searching Mode, Location-based E-Map Browsing Mode, 3-D Tag-Cloud based Collaborative Sharing Mode, which can enable the user to choose suitable retrieve mode and find the useful entity information much quickly. Furthermore, this paper introduces the latest Web2.0 application technologies into our mobile information retrieve system which can provide users with dynamic recommendation information based on the collaborative value-added data. In the end of this paper, it also describes a case study of a mobile location-based restaurant retrieve system. The successful applications of this system in China certificate the efficiency of our ideas.

Abstract:Mobile microblog browsing is inconvenient due to the limitations of mobile devices. Therefore, it is important to effectively retrieve relevant and timely microblog content that caters to the information need of mobile users. In this paper, we first present the findings from a large-scale study on the relationship between microblog content and user context. Then, we show a system that detects local microblog topics, estimates user interests and selects user-preferred topics. The system employs user context to detect microblog topics and post-processes the topics for finding user-preferred content. We exploit time, location, browsing history, social relationship and activity as user context. The effectiveness of our approach is evaluated against several baseline algorithms for investigating the impact of user context on the relevance of retrieved topics. According to our experimental results, the approach enhances the relevance of topics by 24%, compared to the baseline approaches. Thus, we expect that the proposed approach is helpful in advancing mobile information retrieval.

Abstract:The increasingly popularity of powerful mobile devices, such as smart phones and PDAs, enables users to search for information on the move. However, text is still the main input modality in most current mobile search services although some providers are attempting to provide voice-based mobile search solutions. In this chapter, we explore the innovative query modalities to enable mobile devices to support queries such as text, voice, image, location, and their combinations. We propose a solution to support mobile users to perform visual queries. The queries by captured pictures and text information are studied in depth. For example, the user can simply take a photo of an unfamiliar flower or surrounding buildings to find related information from the Web. A set of indexing schemes are designed to achieve accurate results and fast search through large volumes of data. Experimental results show that our prototype system achieved satisfactory performance. Also, we briefly introduce a prospective mobile search solution based on our ongoing research, which supports multimodal queries including location information, captured pictures and text information.

Abstract:Mobile devices have become indispensable in daily life, and hence how to take advantage of these portable and powerful facilities to share resources and information begins to emerge as an interesting problem. In this paper, we investigate the problem of information retrieval in a mobile peer-to-peer network. The prevailing approach to information retrieval is to apply flooding methods because of its quick response and easy maintenance. Obviously, this kind of approach wastes a huge amount of communication bandwidth which greatly affects the availability of the network, and the battery power which significantly shortens the serving time of mobile devices in the network. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel approach by mimicking different human behaviors of social networks, which takes advantages of Intelligence Accuracy (IA) mechanism that evaluates the distance from a node to certain resources in the network. Extensive experimental results show the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach as well as its scalability in a volatile environment.

Abstract:Since mobile information browsing is still difficult due to limitations of mobile devices, mobile context-awareness becomes an important research topic to understand the information needs of mobile users. Now it is easier to gather more user contexts because mobile devices are equipped with more sensors. In this paper, we examine the relationship between microblogs and contexts, and present a context-aware microblog browser for mobile users. The system retrieves user-related hot topics from microblogs. Through exploiting user contexts such as location, activity, blogging history, and social relationship, it reduces the search range of microblogs and infers user interests. We can filter out unrelated topics based on inferred preference. Therefore, a mobile user can be aware of topics related to his interests. This paper describes details of our approach and the result of evaluation to prove its feasibility.

Abstract:The ever growing popularity of smart mobile devices and rapid advent of wireless technology have given rise to a new class of advertising system, i.e., mobile advertisement recommender system. The traditional internet advertising systems have largely ignored the fact that users interact with the system within a particular “context”. In this paper, we implemented a mobile advertisement recommender prototype system called MARS. MARS captures different user’s contextual information to improve recommendation results. The demonstration shows that MARS makes advertisement recommendation more effectively.

Abstract:The popularity of mobile devices, such as PDAs and SmartPhones, has grown rapidly over the last couple of years. Though most users still perform searches using desktop computers, it is expected that more and more people will also search the Web while they are on the move. in addition to text-based keyword queries, mobile devices can support richer and hybrid queries such as images, audio, video, and their combinations. in this paper,. we will discuss mobile search systems that support image queries and audio queries, covering typical designs for mobile visual and audio search, as well as the opportunities and challenges. Specifically, we will present an in-depth study of two real systems we have developed: product image categorization and mobile ringtone search, which use image queries and audio queries, respectively. Experimental results on real-life data demonstrate their effectiveness and efficiency.

Abstract:This paper adopts a new approach to searching the users with similarinterests by mobile network services instead of by desktop users. First, the direct trustis calculated based on the mobile users’ behavior andthe weight of the corresponding context (time and position), then an indirect trust degree calculation method is proposed according to the propagationdistance based on the theory of the six degrees of separation; secondly this paper further uses the evaluation score about a certain mobile web service given by a mobile user to calculate the preference similarity degree between different users. Finally based on the time attenuation functionit tries to find the users with similar preference,so as to make use of the neighbor users’ preference profile to dynamicallyupdate the target user's preference profile. Simulation shows that the proposed approach outperformspure sliding window methodand pure forgetting strategy method which fail totake the context mobile information into considerationin terms of Recall Ratio and Precision Ratio.

Abstract:Although mobile application ecosystems have experienced tremendous growth in recent years, retrieving content of mobile applications that serves a key to mobile content search engines still faces grand challenges. Compared to web content retrieval, it is much more difficult to capture content in mobile applications due to the diversity of applications and the lack of Uniform Resource Locator indices. In this study, we propose and implement a <underline>u</underline>ser interaction-driven <underline>m</underline>obile <underline>c</underline>ontent <underline>r</underline>etrieval (UMCR) system to address such issues, which is the first mobile content crawler in the current literature. UMCR is a distributed system that contains many measurement nodes, each of which combines the user interaction path traversing (UIPT) and Deep Package Inspection (DPI) together to obtain mobile content. UIPT determines the events of user interactions in various applications to capture the static content such as text and images, in which a traversal depth termination scheme and an optional cut-off component are adopted to balance the content coverage and traversing efficiency. Meanwhile, the analysis based on DPI is responsible for extracting the videos as well as digging the infrastructural information and performance metrics. In addition, a distributed traversal scheduling method is designed for UIPT tasks to improve the throughput and scalability in large-scale content retrieval. Experiments on retrieving content of 64 real mobile applications demonstrate that UMCR can handle diverse mobile applications efficiently. The scheduler can improve throughput by 3 times compared to the legacy arbitrary task assignment strategy.

Computing systems can be made aware of their environment by monitoring attributes such as their current location, the current time, the weather, or nearby equipment and users. Context-aware computing often involves retrieval of information: it introduces a new aspect to technologies for information delivery; currently these technologies are based mainly on contemporary approaches to information retrieval and information filtering. In this paper, we consider how the closely related, but distinct, topics of information retrieval and information filtering relate to context-aware retrieval. Our thesis is that context-aware retrieval is as yet a sparsely researched and sparsely understood area, and we aim in this paper to make a start towards remedying this.
