Abstract:We prove that the maximal infinite step pro-nilfactor X_∞ of a minimal dynamical system (X,T) is the topological characteristic factor in a certain sense. Namely, we show that by an almost one to one modification of π:X → X_∞, the induced open extension π^*:X^* → X^*_∞ has the following property: for x in a dense G_δ set of X^*, the orbit closure L_x=𝒪((x,x,…,x), T× T^2×…× T^d) is (π^*)^(d)-saturated, i.e. L_x=((π^*)^(d))^-1(π^*)^(d)(L_x). Using results derived from the above fact, we are able to answer several open questions: (1) if (X,T^k) is minimal for some k≥ 2, then for any d∈ℕ and any 0≤ j<k there is a sequence {n_i} of ℤ with n_i≡ j (mod k) such that T^n_ix→ x, T^2n_ix→ x, …, T^dn_ix→ x for x in a dense G_δ subset of X; (2) if (X,T) is totally minimal, then {T^n^2x:n∈ℤ} is dense in X for x in a dense G_δ subset of X; (3) for any d∈ℕ and any minimal system, which is an open extension of its maximal distal factor, RP^[d]= AP^[d], where the latter is the regionally proximal relation of order d along arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:Let TC$_n$(X) denote the n-th topological complexity of a topological space X. It is known that TC$_n$(X) does not exceed n-1 for non-contractible X, and so it makes sense to describe spaces X with TC$_n$(X) =n-1. Grant--Lupton--Oprea proved the following: If X is a nilpotent space with TC$_n$(X)=n-1 then X is homotopy equivalent to an odd-dimensional sphere. Here we made an attempt to get rid of nilpotency condition and prove the following: If TC$_n$(X) =n-1 then either X is homotopy equivalent to a sphere of odd dimension or is a homology circle with the infinite cyclic fundamental group.

Abstract:In this paper,we introduce the sub-separation axioms of L-topological spaces including sub-T1,sub-T2,sub-T212,sub-T3 and sub-T4.These new sub-separation axioms are harmonious.And some nice properties of sub-separation axioms are proved.For example,they are hereditary and product invariant,″L-good extension″ in Lowen's sense,and the convergent of molecular nets is sole under a certain condition for the sub-T2 space.In addition,the relation between the sub-separation axioms defined in the paper and other separation axioms is also discussed.

Abstract:A topological group G is called locally minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of 1 in G such that if H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous isomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H, then f is open. This paper is focused on the study of quotients of locally minimal groups.A topological group G is called locally q-minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of the identity of G such that whenever H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous surjective homomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H, then f is open. We find a close connection between locally q-minimality and divisibility, by showing that a dense subgroup of Rn is locally q-minimal if and only if it is divisible. A description of the locally q-minimal subgroups of the n-dimensional torus Tn is also given.Two weaker versions of local q-minimality are proposed – a topological group G is:(a)locally t-minimal, if all Hausdorff quotients of G are locally minimal;(b)locally q⁎-minimal, if there exists a neighbourhood V of 1 in G such that whenever H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous surjective homomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H and ker⁡f⊆V, then f is open.While local q-minimality and local t-minimality are preserved by taking quotients, local q⁎-minimality fails to have this property (so does not coincide with local t-minimality), yet it has a relevant advantage. By means of an appropriate notion of local t-density, one can show that a dense subgroup H of a Hausdorff group G is locally q⁎-minimal if and only if G is locally q⁎-minimal and H is locally t-dense in G. Similar criterion for local q-minimality is not available (examples are given to show that a topological group with a dense locally q-minimal subgroup need not be locally q-minimal). The interrelations of these three versions of local minimality, as well as their prominence properties are studied in detail.

Abstract:Let $(M, g)$ be a compact Riemann surface with area $1$. We investigate the Toda system \begin{align} \begin{cases} -\Delta u_1 = 2\rho_1(h_1e^{u_1}-1) - \rho_2(h_2e^{u_2}-1),\\ -\Delta u_2 = 2\rho_2(h_2e^{u_2}-1) - \rho_1(h_1e^{u_1}-1), \end{cases} \end{align} on $(M, g)$ where $\rho_1, \rho_2 \in (0,4\pi]$, and $h_1$ and $h_2$ are two smooth functions on $M$.When some $\rho_i$ equals $4\pi$, the Toda system becomes critical with respect to the Moser-Trudinger inequality for it, making the existence problem significantly more challenging. In their seminal article (Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 59 (2006), no. 4, 526--558), Jost, Lin, and Wang established sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions the Toda system when $\rho_1=4\pi$, $\rho_2 \in (0,4\pi)$ or $\rho_1=\rho_2=4\pi$, assuming that $h_1$ and $h_2$ are both positive. In our previous paper we extended these results to allow $h_1$ and $h_2$ to change signs in the case $\rho_1=4\pi$, $\rho_2 \in (0,4\pi)$. In this paper we further extend the study to prove that Jost-Lin-Wang's sufficient conditions remain valid even when $h_1$ and $h_2$ can change signs and $\rho_1=\rho_2=4\pi$. Our proof relies on an improved version of the Moser-Trudinger inequality for the Toda system, along with edicated analyses similar to Brezis-Merle type and the use of Pohozaev identities.

Abstract:Let X be a compact metric space and T : X → X be continuous. Let h * ( T ) be the supremum of topological sequence entropies of T over all subsequences of ℤ + and S ( X ) be the set of the values h *( T ) for all continuous maps T on X . It is known that {0} ⊆ S ( X ) ⊆ {0, log 2, log 3, …} ∪ {∞}. Only three possibilities for S ( X ) have been observed so far, namely S ( X ) = {0}, S ( X ) = {0, log 2, ∞} and S ( X ) = {0, log 2, log 3, …}∪{∞}. In this paper we completely solve the problem of finding all possibilities for S ( X ) by showing that in fact for every set {0} ⊆ A ⊆ {0, log 2, log 3, …} ∪ {∞} there exists a one-dimensional continuum X A with S ( X A ) = A . In the construction of X A we use Cook continua. This is apparently the first application of these very rigid continua in dynamics. We further show that the same result is true if one considers only homeomorphisms rather than continuous maps. The problem for group actions is also addressed. For some class of group actions (by homeomorphisms) we provide an analogous result, but in full generality this problem remains open.
An upper bound for the rational topological complexity of a family of elliptic spaces

Abstract:In this work, we show that, for any simply-connected elliptic space $S$ admitting a pure minimal Sullivan model with a differential of constant length, we have ${\rm TC}_0(S)\leq 2{\rm cat}_0(S)+\chi_{\pi}(S)$ where $\chi_{\pi}(S)$ is the homotopy characteristic. This is a consequence of a structure theorem for this type of models, which is actually our main result.

Stability of Tori under Lower Sectional Curvature

Abstract:Let $(M^n_i, g_i)\to (X,d_X)$ be a Gromov-Hausdorff converging sequence of Riemannian manifolds with ${\rm Sec}_{g_i} \ge -1$, ${\rm diam}\, (M_i)\le D$, and such that the $M^n_i$ are all homeomorphic to tori $T^n$. Then $X$ is homeomorphic to a $k$-dimensional torus $T^k$ for some $0\leq k\leq n$. This answers a question of Petrunin in the affirmative. We show this result is false is the $M^n_i$ are homeomorphic tori which are only assumed to be Alexandrov spaces. When $n=3$, we prove the same tori stability under the weaker condition ${\rm Ric}_{g_i} \ge -2$.

Abstract:In this article we introduce a definition of topological minimal sets, which is a generalization of that of Mumford-Shah-minimal sets. We prove some general properties as well as two existence theorems for topological minimal sets. As an application we prove the topological minimality of the union of two almost orthogonal planes in $\R^4$, and use it to improve the angle criterion under which the union of several higher dimensional planes is Almgren-minimal.

The geometric Toda equations for noncompact symmetric spaces

Abstract:This paper has two purposes. The first is to classify all those versions of the Toda equations which govern the existence of $\tau$-primitive harmonic maps from a surface into a homogeneous space $G/T$ for which $G$ is a noncomplex noncompact simple real Lie group and $T$ is a maximal compact torus, i.e., a maximal torus inside a maximal compact subgroup $H < G$. Here $\tau$ is the Coxeter automorphism which Drinfel'd & Sokolov assigned to each affine Dynkin diagram. This allows $\tau$ to be either an inner or an outer automorphism. We show that, up to equivalence, the real forms $G<G^\mathbb{C}$ which are compatible with $\tau$ can be classified using a simple labelling of the corresponding affine diagram. The second purpose is to establish when stability criteria can be used to prove the existence of solutions. We interpret the Toda equations over a compact Riemann surface $\Sigma$ as equations for a metric on a holomorphic principal $T^\mathbb{C}$-bundle $Q^\mathbb{C}$ over $\Sigma$. The corresponding Chern connection, when combined with a holomorphic field $\varphi$, produces a $G$-connection which is flat precisely when the Toda equations hold. We call the pair $(Q^\mathbb{C},\varphi)$ a Toda pair. We classify those real forms of the Toda equations for which the Toda pair is a principal pair (in the sense of Bradlow et al.) and we call these totally noncompact Toda pairs. Using the stability theory for principal pairs we prove that for totally noncompact cyclic Toda pairs $(Q^\mathbb{C},\varphi)$ the corresponding Toda equations always admit solutions. Every solution to the geometric Toda equations has a corresponding $G$-Higgs bundle. We explain how to construct this $G$-Higgs bundle directly from the Toda pair and show that Baraglia's cyclic Higgs bundles arise from a very special case of totally noncompact cyclic Toda pairs.

Abstract:AbstractLi and Zhu [Applied Mathematics and Computation, 150 (2004) 481] studied the difference equationx"n=x"n"-"1x"n"-"2+x"n"-"3+ax"n"-"1+x"n"-"2x"n"-"3+a,n=1,2,...where a>=0. They claimed that the unique positive equilibrium of the equation is globally asymptotically stable. Unfortunately, there is a subtle mistake in their proof. In this paper, we present a correct proof for this claim.

In addition, the relation between the sub-separation axioms defined in the paper and other separation axioms is discussed. The results show that the sub-separation axioms in this paper are weaker than other separation axioms that had appeared in literature.

Abstract:Completely integrable systems are dynamically simple in common sense, but they may have complicated dynamics around the points where their first integrals are not functionally independent. Tudoran in 2017 provided a criterion for characterizing stability of nondegenerated regular singularities of completely integrable systems. Here we present a new criterion which is more useful than that by Tudoran, in the sense that the cases that his criterion works on are also applicable to ours, whereas there are cases that our criterion works on but his does not.

Abstract:In this paper, the notions of L-internal relations and L-enclosed relations are introduced. They are respectively defined to be crisp relations on L-x satisfying a set of axioms, which can be used to characterize L-topologies. It is shown that the category of L-internal relation spaces, the category of L-enclosed relation spaces and the category of L-topological spaces are isomorphic. Moreover, the relationships among L-internal relations, L-enclosed relations and the axioms of separation are investigated.

Abstract:Let Mn be a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature H in Sn+1. Denote by S the squared norm of the second fundamental form of M. We prove that there exists an explicit positive constant γ(n) depending only on n such that if |H|≤γ(n) and β(n,H)≤S≤β(n,H)+n23, then S≡β(n,H) and M is one of the following cases: (i) Sk(kn)×Sn−k(n−kn), 1≤k≤n−1; (ii) S1(11+μ2)×Sn−1(μ1+μ2).
