Abstract:We propose a pervasive usage of the sensor network infrastructure as a cyber-physical system for navigating internal users in locations of potential danger. Our proposed application differs from previous work in that they typically treat the sensor network as a media of data acquisition while in our navigation application, in-situ interactions between users and sensors become ubiquitous. In addition, human safety and time factors are critical to the success of our objective. Without any pre-knowledge of user and sensor locations, the design of an effective and efficient navigation protocol faces non-trivial challenges. We propose to embed a road map system in the sensor network without location information so as to provide users navigating routes with guaranteed safety. We accordingly design efficient road map updating mechanisms to rebuild the road map in the event of changes in dangerous areas. In this navigation system, each user only issues local queries to obtain their navigation route. The system is highly scalable for supporting multiple users simultaneously. We implement a prototype system with 36 TelosB motes to validate the effectiveness of this design. We further conduct comprehensive and large-scale simulations to examine the efficiency and scalability of the proposed approach under various environmental dynamics.

Abstract:A computer system which can find the pathway in the robot's sensor field of view with only one camera has been developed. The low level extraction of linear segmentations is performed by edge following algorithm with the local gray level and gradient as heuristics. The symbolic lists which describe the optical and geometric properties of linear segmentations are generated as the output of the low level and submit to the high level. In high level stage a reasoning mechanism whose knowledge base consists of the rules modeling three basic types of pathway segments (non-branch, branch, and end) works on the symbolic lists to make the judgement of which type to be happened in the sensor area. Several parameters such as the exact positions of the pathway can be calculated as the signals for navigation control system. The experiments showed that the system behaved specially well for the existence of noise. shadow. and irregularities of environments.
Novel Navigation Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks Without Information of Locations.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel distributed navigation algorithm for people to escape from critical event region in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Unlike existing works, the scenario discussed in the paper has no goal or exit as guidance, leading to a big challenge for the navigation problem. To solve it, our proposed navigation algorithm computes the convex hull of the event region just by some topological methods. With the reference of the convex hull, people can be easily navigated out of the event region. Both the computation complexity and communication overhead of the proposed algorithm are very low, as it only needs to flood two shortest path trees in a limited area around the event region with a distance [L/2π] + 1 to the event boundary, where L is the length of the boundary. Conducted simulations have verified the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This paper proposed a multi-agent based architecture for outdoor mobile robot navigation where event-driven control is used to handle the dynamically changing of the environment. With the support of a distributed communication infrastructure and an event-driven situation evaluation agent, the robot can initiate action adaptive to the dynamical changes in the environment through reorganize its internal architecture. Adaptiveness and feasibility of the proposed architecture is validated through navigation experiments on the robot in a variety of natural outdoor environments.

Abstract:In this paper we propose an environment map free navigation algorithm based on RF wireless sensor networks for an indoor autonomous mobile robot.In our navigation system,the robot can navigate autonomously without the need for a map,by acquiring the information of pre-set radio emission sensors deployed in an indoor environment.By measuring the distance from one sensor node after another using triangular localization method,the robot locates itself and knows its pose.The proposed algorithm is conceptually simple and easy to implement.Our approach is applied to a mobile robot platform,simulation and experimental results show that good localization can be achieved using the proposed method.

Abstract:Global Positioning System (GPS) is often used as a main information source for robot localization and navigation. However, it cannot be used in room or in field complex environment because of the bad signal there. To solve this problem, the authors designed and implemented a specific wireless sensor network (WSN) to provide information about the environment and indicate path for robot navigation. A two-stage auto-adaptive route selecting mechanism of the WSN was proposed to facilitate data relaying in localization and the robot's navigation. A low complexity localization algorithm was used to localize both the nodes and the robot. An indirect communication method was designed to make the communication between the WSN and the robot possible. In addition, a robot navigation method was proposed based on the wireless sensor network. In this method, the robot did not need to obtain the environment information; the wireless sensor nodes collected and fused the distributed information and then indicate a path for the robot. Experiments showed that the wireless sensor network can result in obstacle avoidance navigation, and can implement the online navigation.

Abstract:It's a new and good method to apply wireless sensor networks on robot navigation. We proposed an environment map free navigation for robot based on wireless sensor networks. In this system, the robot did not need to obtain the environment map and can get online navigation. The wireless sensor nodes collected environment and position information and made distributed information fusing to give a path for the robot. The robot then communicated with the wireless sensor network and went through following network's order. To combine the shorter path and the safer path, we proposed a navigation cost method for robot's navigation. It makes know by analysis that the environment map free navigation algorithm for robot in wireless sensor networks can achieve an online navigation and get highly precise navigation.

Abstract:For the indoor navigation of service robots, human–robot interaction and adapting to the environment still need to be strengthened, including determining the navigation goal socially, improving the success rate of passing doors, and optimizing the path planning efficiency. This paper proposes an indoor navigation system based on object semantic grid and topological map, to optimize the above problems. First, natural language is used as a human–robot interaction form, from which the target room, object, and spatial relationship can be extracted by using speech recognition and word segmentation. Then, the robot selects the goal point from the target space by object affordance theory. To improve the navigation success rate and safety, we generate auxiliary navigation points on both sides of the door to correct the robot trajectory. Furthermore, based on the topological map and auxiliary navigation points, the global path is segmented into each topological area. The path planning algorithm is carried on respectively in every room, which significantly improves the navigation efficiency. This system has demonstrated to support autonomous navigation based on language interaction and significantly improve the safety, efficiency, and robustness of indoor robot navigation. Our system has been successfully tested in real domestic environments.

Abstract:Staff safety is not assured due to the indoor substation's high environmental risk factor. The Chinese State Grid Corporation has been engaged in the intelligentization of substations and the employment of robots for inspection tasks. The autonomous navigation and positioning system of the mobile chassis is the most important feature of this type of robot, as it allows the robot to perceive the surrounding environment information at the initial position using its own sensors and find a suitable path to move to the target point to complete the task. Automatic navigation is the basis for the intelligentization of indoor substation robots, which is of great significance to the efficient and safe inspection of indoor substations. Based on this, this paper formulates a new navigation system, and builds a chassis simulation environment in the Robot Operating System (ROS). To begin with, we develop a novel hardware and sensor-based chassis navigation system experimental platform. Secondly, to conduct the fusion of the odometer and inertial navigation data, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is used. The map's creation approach determines how the environmental map is created. The global path is scheduled with the A* algorithm, whereas the local path is scheduled with the Dynamic Window Method (DWA). Finally, the created robot navigation system is applied to an auxiliary operation robot chassis suited for power distribution cabinet switch and the navigation system's experimental analysis is conducted using this platform, demonstrating the system's efficacy and practicability.

Abstract:The wireless sensor network (WSN) is defined as a networks, which is setup by some sensor nodes of self-organizing. In this paper, the wireless sensor navigation network is designed based on the main control chip CC2430. The basic structure of the system covers the sink node, the beacon nodes and the mobile robot. To realize the motion navigation of the mobile robot in WSN, the multi-objective decision techniques based on Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) information is applied. Most of calculations are implemented by each static node. The navigation method can effectively reduce the robot complicated design and achieve optimal performance. Finally, the experiment results show the correctness and the affectivity of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for navigation in complex and unknown environments. At present, existing local path planners whose control output is the mapping of current sensor data have been widely studied. However, these methods cannot really solve the problem of being trapped by obstacles. We analyzed the reasons and made improvements, and finally our approach can avoid being trapped in complex environments. The proposed method is based on 2D LIDAR. A central part of the approach is finding out gaps in the environment by analyzing sensor data. Then, we choose one of the gaps we find as the sub-goal. Linear and angular velocities are provided by the approach considering nonholonomic mobile robots. The method does not rely on global planners and environment maps. Therefore, it has the advantages of low computational complexity and fast response, which is of great significance to robots with low computing power; it will also help to reduce the manufacturing cost of robots. In addition, simulations and real tests were performed using the Turtlebot2 robotic platform. Successful results are achieved in both simulations and experimental tests.

Abstract:In this paper, a navigation system for autonomous mobile robots is proposed. Our navigation system is a hybrid of behaviour-based and model-based navigation systems. In our system, a behaviour-based subsystem is in charge of low-level reactive actions, and a model-based subsystem is responsible for high-level planned actions. If there are obstacles in the way, the navigation system will use our obstacle avoidance algorithm to navigate around these obstacles and keep the robot moving towards the destination. On the basis of our experimental results, our navigation system can navigate the robot to the destination effectively.

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of guiding mobile sensors (or robots) to a phenomenon across a region covered by static sensors. We present a distributed, reliable and energy-efficient algorithm to construct a smoothed moving trajectory for a mobile robot. The reliable trajectory is realized by first constructing among static sensors a distributed hop count based artificial potential field (DH-APF) with only one local minimum near the phenomenon, and then navigating the robot to that minimum by an attractive force following the reversed gradient of the constructed field. Besides the attractive force towards the phenomenon, our algorithm adopts an additional repulsive force to push the robot away from obstacles, exploiting the fast sensing devices carried by the robot. Compared with previous navigation algorithms that guide the robot along a planned path, our algorithm can (1) tolerate the potential deviation from a planned path, since the DH-APF covers the entire deployment region; (2) mitigate the trajectory oscillation problem; (3) avoid the potential collision with obstacles; (4) save the precious energy of static sensors by configuring a large moving step size, which is not possible for algorithms neglecting the issue of navigation reliability. Our theoretical analysis of the above features considers practical sensor network issues including radio irregularity, packet loss and radio conflict. We implement the proposed algorithm over TinyOS and test its performance on the simulation platform with a high fidelity provided by TOSSIM and Tython. Simulation results verify the reliability and energy efficiency of the proposed mobile sensor navigation algorithm.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel navigation control algorithm for mobile robots utilizing the advantages of both wireless sensor network(WSN) and swarm intelligence(SI). The algorithm uses sensor fusion for building probabilistic occupancy map, online real-time path planning under unknown environment based on particle swarm algorithm using bionic swarm intelligence, and obstacle avoidance strategies. The energy consumption and topology of the wireless sensor work is discussed. A practical implementation with real wireless sensor network and real mobile robots has been carried out to validate the enhanced efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:When emergencies happen, navigation services that guide people to exits while keeping them away from emergencies are critical in saving lives. To achieve timely emergency navigation, early and automatic detection of potential dangers, and quick response with safe paths to exits are the core requirements, both of which rely on continuous environment monitoring and reliable data transmission. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a natural choice of the infrastructure to support emergency navigation services, given their relatively easy deployment and affordable costs, and the ability of ubiquitous sensing and communication. Although many efforts have been made to WSN-assisted emergency navigation, almost all existing works neglect to consider the hazard levels of emergencies and the evacuation capabilities of exits. Without considering such aspects, existing navigation approaches may fail to keep people farther away from emergencies of high hazard levels and would probably encounter congestions at exits with lower evacuation capabilities. In this paper, we propose SEND, a situation-aware emergency navigation algorithm, which takes the hazard levels of emergencies and the evacuation capabilities of exits into account and provides the mobile users the safest navigation paths accordingly. We formally model the situation-aware emergency navigation problem and establish a hazard potential field in the network, which is theoretically free of local minima. By guiding users following the descend gradient of the hazard potential field, SEND can thereby achieve guaranteed success of navigation and provide optimal safety. The effectiveness of SEND is validated by both experiments and extensive simulations in 2D and 3D scenarios.

Abstract:The reliable navigation of mobile robots outdoors depends on high-precision maps, accurate localization and efficient path planning. The complexity and variability of outdoor scenes bring great challenges to the navigation of mobile robots. The safety of mobile robot operation is the premise of application. In this paper, a navigation system including localization, human detection and path planning is proposed for the safety of mobile robot in outdoor tasks. We use Support Vector Machine (SVM) to carry out human detection for 3D point cloud before path planning. And special avoidance processing is carried out for clusters labeled as human. The system can enhance the safety of robot and human in the operation of mobile robot.

Abstract:In order to solve the map-based large-scale space navigation problem of mobile robots,a navigation system is proposed which consists of three modules,including map editor,map matching and self-localization,and hierarchical planning. The map editor module takes charge of editing the navigation map,the map matching and self-localization module uses data from the odometer and laser scanner to realize robot self-localization based on matching between local and global maps,and the hierarchical planning module efficiently integrates such functions as global topological map-based planning,local grid map-based planning,and low-level behavior control.Experiments of indoor self-localization and navigation in a large-scale space are made to evaluate the validity and accuracy of the proposed system.
Efficient Emergency Rescue Navigation with Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Recently, many applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been dis-cussed. Navigation with WSNs is among the most heated debated ones. Previous naviga-tion algorithms attempt to find safe and efficient escape paths for individuals under various environmental dynamics but ignore possible congestion caused by the individu-als rushing for the exits. Moreover, most previous works have overlooked the fact that the emergency rescue force can take actions strategically in order to save people out of danger. We propose an efficient Emergency Rescue Navigation strategy (ERN) by treat-ing WSNs as navigation infrastructure. Our approach takes both pedestrian congestion and rescue force flexibility into account. A directed graph is used to model the emer-gency regions. Human’s movements are regarded as network flows on the graph. By cal-culating the maximum flow and minimum cut on the graph, the system can provide firemen rescue commands to eliminate key dangerous areas, which may significantly reduce congestion and save trapped people. We have performed extensive simulations under dynamic environments to evaluate the effectiveness and response time of our work. Simulation results show that, with our strategy, people in emergency are evacuated much faster and less congestion is observed.
