Abstract:The node-weighted Steiner tree problem is a variation of classical Steiner minimum tree problem. Given a graph G=(V,E) with node weight function C:V→R+and a subset X of V, the node-weighted Steiner tree problem is to find a Steiner tree for the set X such that its total weight is minimum. In this paper, we study this problem in unit disk graphs and present a (1+Ε)-approximation algorithm for any Ε>0, when the given set of vertices is c-local. As an application, we use node-weighted Steiner tree to solve the node-weighted connected dominating set problem in unit disk graphs and obtain a (5+Ε)-approximation algorithm. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract:Let G=(V,E) be a weighted graph, i.e., with a vertex weight function w:V→R+. We study the problem of determining a minimum weight connected subgraph of G that has at least one vertex in common with all paths of length two in G. It is known that this problem is NP-hard for general graphs. We first show that it remains NP-hard when restricted to unit disk graphs. Our main contribution is a polynomial time approximation scheme for this problem if we assume that the problem is c-local and the unit disk graphs have minimum degree of at least two.

Abstract:Given a node-weighted graph, the minimum-weighted dominating set (MWDS) problem is to find a minimum-weighted vertex subset such that, for any vertex, it is contained in this subset or it has a neighbor contained in this set. And the minimum-weighted connected dominating set (MWCDS) problem is to find a MWDS such that the graph induced by this subset is connected. In this paper, we study these two problems on a unit disk graph. A (4 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWDS based on a dynamic programming algorithm for a Min-Weight Chromatic Disk Cover is presented. Meanwhile, we also propose a (1 +ε)-approximation algorithm for the connecting part by showing a polynomial-time approximation scheme for a Node-Weighted Steiner Tree problem when the given terminal set is c-local and thus obtain a (5 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWCDS.

Abstract:In the Minimum k-Path Connected Vertex Cover Problem (M k PCVCP), we are given a connected graph G and an integer k ≥ 2, and are required to find a subset C of vertices with minimum cardinality such that each path with length k − 1 has a vertex in C , and moreover, the induced subgraph G [ C ] is connected. M k PCVCP is a generalization of the minimum connected vertex cover problem and has applications in many areas such as security communications in wireless sensor networks. M k PCVCP is proved to be NP-complete. In this paper, we give the first polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for M k PCVCP in unit disk graphs, for every fixed k ≥ 2.

Abstract:When sensors are deployed into a space instead of a plane, the mathematical model for the sensor network should be a unit ball graph instead of a unit disk graph. It has been known that the minimum connected dominating set in unit disk graph has a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS). Could we extend the construction of this PTAS for unit disk graphs to unit ball graphs? The answer is NO. In this paper, we will introduce a new construction, which gives not only a PTAS for the minimum connected dominating set in unit ball graph, but also improves running time of PTAS for unit disk graph.

Abstract:We are given a set of weighted unit disks and a set of points in Euclidean plane. The minimum weight unit disk cover (WUDC) problem asks for a subset of disks of minimum total weight that covers all given points. WUDC is one of the geometric set cover problems, which have been studied extensively for the past two decades (for many different geometric range spaces, such as (unit) disks, halfspaces, rectangles, triangles). It is known that the unweighted WUDC problem is NP-hard and admits a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS). For the weighted WUDC problem, several constant approximations have been developed. However, whether the problem admits a PTAS has been an open question. In this paper, we answer this question affirmatively by presenting the first PTAS for WUDC. Our result implies the first PTAS for the minimum weight dominating set problem in unit disk graphs. Combining with existing ideas, our result can also be used to obtain the first PTAS for the maxmimum lifetime coverage problem and an improved constant approximation ratio for the connected dominating set problem in unit disk graphs.

Abstract:We introduce and study two natural generalizations of the Connected VertexCover (VC) problem: the $p$-Edge-Connected and $p$-Vertex-Connected VC problem (where $p \geq 2$ is a fixed integer). Like Connected VC, both new VC problems are FPT, but do not admit a polynomial kernel unless $NP \subseteq coNP/poly$, which is highly unlikely. We prove however that both problems admit time efficient polynomial sized approximate kernelization schemes. We obtain an $O(2^{O(pk)}n^{O(1)})$-time algorithm for the $p$-Edge-Connected VC and an $O(2^{O(k^2)}n^{O(1)})$-time algorithm for the $p$-Vertex-Connected VC. Finally, we describe a $2(p+1)$-approximation algorithm for the $p$-Edge-Connected VC. The proofs for the new VC problems require more sophisticated arguments than for Connected VC. In particular, for the approximation algorithm we use Gomory-Hu trees and for the approximate kernels a result on small-size spanning $p$-vertex/edge-connected subgraph of a $p$-vertex/edge-connected graph obtained independently by Nishizeki and Poljak (1994) and Nagamochi and Ibaraki (1992).

Abstract:The connected dominating set (CDS) problem, which consists of finding a smallest connected dominating set for graphs is an NP-hard problem in the unit disk graphs (UDGs). This paper focuses on the CDS problem in wireless networks. Investigation of some properties of independent set (IS) in UDGs shows that geometric features of nodes distribution like angle and area can be used to design efficient heuristics for the approximation algorithms. Several constant factor approximation algorithms are presented for the CDS problem in UDGs. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms perform better than some known ones.

Abstract:In this paper, we design the first polynomial time approximation scheme for d -hop connected dominating set ( d -CDS) problem in growth-bounded graphs, which is a general type of graphs including unit disk graph, unit ball graph, etc. Such graphs can represent majority types of existing wireless networks. Our algorithm does not need geometric representation (e.g., specifying the positions of each node in the plane) beforehand. The main strategy is clustering partition. We select the d -CDS for each subset separately, union them together, and then connect the induced graph of this set. We also provide detailed performance and complexity analysis.

Abstract:It was a long-standing open problem whether the minimum weight dominating set in unit disk graphs has a polynomial-time constant-approximation. In 2006, Ambuhl et al solved this problem by presenting a 72-approximation for the minimum weight dominating set and also a 89-approximation for the minimum weight connected dominating set in unit disk graphs. In this paper, we improve their results by giving a (6 + epsilon)-approximation for the minimum weight dominating set and a (10 + epsilon)-approximation for the minimum weight connected dominating set in unit disk graphs where epsilon is any small positive number.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new polynomial time constant factor approximation algorithm for a more-a-decade-long open NP-hard problem, the minimum four-connected m-dominating set problem in unit disk graph (UDG) with any positive integer m >= 1 for the first time in the literature. We observe that it is difficult to modify the existing constant factor approximation algorithm for the minimum three-connected m-dominating set problem to solve the minimum four-connected m-dominating set problem in UDG due to the structural limitation of Tutte decomposition, which is the main graph theory tool used by Wang et al. to design their algorithm. To resolve this issue, we first reinvent a new constant factor approximation algorithm for the minimum three-connected m-dominating set problem in UDG and later use this algorithm to design a new constant factor approximation algorithm for the minimum four- connected m-dominating set problem in UDG.

Abstract:Connected dominating set (CDS) in unit disk graphs has a wide range of applications in wireless ad hoc networks. A number of approximation algorithms for constructing a small CDS in unit disk graphs have been proposed in the literature. The majority of these algorithms follow a general two-phased approach. The first phase constructs a dominating set, and the second phase selects additional nodes to interconnect the nodes in the dominating set. In the performance analyses of these two-phased algorithms, the relation between the independence number α and the connected domination number γ c of a unit-disk graph plays the key role. The best-known relation between them is α≤32/3γ_c+1 . In this paper, we prove that α ≤3.4306 γ c +4.8185. This relation leads to tighter upper bounds on the approximation ratios of two approximation algorithms proposed in the literature.

Abstract:In the minimum weighted dominating set problem (MWDS), we are given a unit disk graph with non-negative weight on each vertex. The MWDS seeks a subset of the vertices of the graph with minimum total weight such that each vertex of the graph is either in the subset or adjacent to some nodes in the subset. A weight function is called smooth, if the ratio of the weights of any two adjacent nodes is upper bounded by a constant. MWDS is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we give the first polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for MWDS with smooth weights on unit disk graphs, which achieves a (1+ ε )-approximation for MWDS, for any ε >0.

Abstract:Given a graph G, the minimum Connected-k-Subgraph Cover problem (MinCkSC) is to find a minimum vertex subset C of G such that every connected subgraph of G on k vertices has at least one vertex in C. If furthermore the subgraph of G induced by C is connected, then the problem is denoted as MinCkSC . In this paper, we first present a PTAS for MinCkSC on an H-minor-free graph, where H is a graph with a constant number of vertices. Then, we design an -time FPT algorithm for MinCkSC on a graph with treewidth , based on which we further design an time subexponential FPT algorithm for MinCkSC on an H-minor-free graph, where t is an upper bound of solution size.

Abstract:Connected Dominating Set is widely used as virtual backbone in wireless Ad-hoc and sensor networks to improve the performance of transmission and routing protocols. Based on special characteristics of Ad-hoc and sensor networks, we usually use unit disk graphto represent the corresponding geometrical structures, where each node has a unit transmission range and two nodes are said to be adjacent if the distance between them is less than 1. Since every Maximal Independent Set (MIS) is a dominating set and it is easy to construct, we can firstly find a MIS and then connect it into a Connected Dominating Set (CDS). Therefore, the ratio to compare the size of a MIS with a minimum CDS becomes a theoretical upper bound for approximation algorithms to compute CDS. In our paper, with the help of Voronoi diagram and Euler's formula, we improved this upper bound, so that improved the approximations based on this relation.

Abstract:Given finite number of forests of complete multipartite graph, conflict graph is a sum graph of them. Graph of this class can model many natural problems, such as in database application and others. We show that this property is non-trivial if limiting the number of forests of complete multipartite graph, then study the problem of vertex cover on conflict graph in this paper. The complexity results list as follow,If the number of forests of complete multipartite graph is fixed, conflict graph is non-trivial property, but finding 1.36-approximation algorithms is NP-hard.Given 2 forests of complete multipartite graph and maximum degree less than 7, vertex cover problem of conflict graph is NP-complete. Without the degree restriction, it is shown to be NP-hard to find an algorithm for vertex cover of conflict graph within $$\\frac{17}{16}-\\varepsilon $$1716-ε, for any $$\\varepsilon >0$$ε>0. Given conflict graph consists of r forests of complete multipartite graph, we design an approximation algorithm and show that the approximation ratio can be bounded by $$2-\\frac{1}{2^r}$$2-12r. Furthermore, under the assumption of UGC, the approximation algorithm is shown to be near optimal by proving that, it is hard to improve the ratio with a factor independent of the size number of vertex of conflict graph.
