Abstract:The number of applications that use radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology has grown continually in the last few years. In this presentation we will present the results of research on the electromagnetic environment on RFID systems. We analyze the effects of UHF MHz China RFID system near a GSM frequency bands. Kurokawa's method of calculating the power reflection coefficient from the Smith chart in the situation is applied to passive RFID tag design. The performance analysis of a specific RFID tag is presented to be compared with the theory. One of our objectives has been to examine tag designs that are less sensitive to their environment, in that their radiation patters and tag response characteristics change little when placed on different distance and orientation. We introduce a technique for deploying RFID systems and engineering solutions based on fundamental electromagnetic understanding. The paper will also explore tag designs that use electromagnetic models to simulate and engineer RFID systems.

Abstract:Nowadays, RFID technology is increasingly become popular and begin to enter many spheres of everyday life. In this paper, we present LocSafe, a “missed-connections” service with privacy grantees based on RFID technology, in order to prove an encounter sharing among users in the past. LocSafe is comprised of three parts: RFID Tags, LE Collectors, and Social Service Provider. We use RFID technology to detect encounters, and use attribute-based encryption and broadcast encryption to establish trust and protect users' privacy. We evaluate LocSafe by an study of “missed-connections” problems and analysis of system implementation.

Abstract:Recently, there has been growing interest in indoor localization, because numerous applications depend on the rapid and accurate position estimation of tagged objects. While RFID-based indoor localization is attractive, the need for a large-scale and high-density deployment of readers and reference tags is costly. Being the range-free localization, our schemes depend solely on mobile readers without reference tags or other devices, and it avoids the need of distance estimation according to RSSI or phase difference. We propose two novel algorithms, continuous scanning and category-based scheduling, for locating single and multiple tagged objects, respectively. Our primary experimental results show that the system can achieve high time efficiency and localization accuracy.

Abstract:Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has successfully proven its potential for locating objects in a 3-dimensional (3D) space. Current RFID-based 3D localization is built on the ethos of striving for accuracy. This paper takes the first step toward efficient localization with high time efficiency and energy efficiency, which are important for accelerating positioning operation and prolonging system lifetime. To this end, we propose leveraging known locations of deployed reference readers and reference tags to probe as a few reference tags as sufficient for localization. Counter-intuitively, localization using fewer reference tags promises rather higher efficiency yet without necessarily sacrificing accuracy. We design efficient passive scheme and efficient active scheme for both typical RFID-based 3D localization scenarios, locating a target tag using reference readers/tags and locating a target reader using reference tags. We evaluate their performance through quantitative analysis and extensive simulation. The results show that the proposed schemes outperform existing schemes in time efficiency and energy efficiency by over 95% on average.

Abstract:The advances of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology have significantly enhanced the capability of capturing data from pervasive space. It becomes a great challenge in the information era to effectively understand human behavior, mobility and activity through the perceived RFID data. Focusing on RFID data management, this article provides an overview of current challenges, emerging opportunities and recent progresses in RFID. In particular, this article has described and analyzed the research work on three aspects: algorithm, protocol and performance evaluation. We investigate the research progress in RFID with anti-collision algorithms, authentication and privacy protection protocols, localization and activity sensing, as well as performance tuning in realistic settings. We emphasize the basic principles of RFID data management to understand the state-of-the-art and to address directions of future research in RFID.

Abstract:RFID technology is increasingly being deployed in ubiquitous computing environments for object tracking and localization. Existing tracking architecture usually assumes the use of a trusted server which is invulnerable to compromise by internal and external adversaries. However, maintaining such a trusted server is unlikely in the real world. In this paper, we consider the problem of adding privacy protection to object tracking systems built upon passive RFID tags, without relying on a trusted server assumption. Our protocol continues to protect user privacy in the event of partial compromise of a server.

Abstract:RFID (radio frequency identification) technology has been widely used for object tracking in many real-life applications, such as inventory monitoring and product flow tracking. These applications usually rely on passive RFID technologies rather than active ones, since passive RFID tags are more attractive than active ones in many aspects, such as lower tag cost and simpler maintenance. RFID technology is also important for indoor location tracking systems that require high degree of accuracy. However, most existing systems estimate object locations by using active RFID tags, which usually incur localization error of more than one meter. Although recent studies begin to investigate the application of passive tags for indoor location tracking, these methods are far from deployable and research of this application is still in its infancy. In this paper, we propose a new indoor location tracking system, named PassTrack, which relies on the read rates of passive RFID tags for location estimation. PassTrack is designed to tolerate noise arising from external environmental factors, by probabilistically modeling the relationship between tag read rate and tag-reader distance, and updating the model parameters based on the current readings of reference tags. Besides tolerance of noise, PassTrack is also outstanding in terms of localization accuracy and efficiency. Several new approaches for location inference are supported by PassTrack, and the best one incurs an average error of around 30 cm, and is able to carry out over 7500 location estimations per second on an ordinary machine. Furthermore, as a result of using passive RFID tags, PassTrack also enjoys the many other benefits of passive RFID tags mentioned before. We have conducted extensive experiments on both real and synthetic datasets, which demonstrate that our PassTrack system outperforms the previous localization approaches in localization accuracy, tracking efficiency and space applicability.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a tagless object detection and localization method implemented by a commercial radio frequency identification (RFID) system. Tags in the RFID system have important applications in indoor locating, and these tags are often affixed to the target object. But for some special situations, it is necessary to develop the object localization method without attached tags. We increase the diversity of the RFID communication channels by pasting tags around the location scene, thus we can obtain more information of the target object and meanwhile no attached tags are needed. The target reflectivity image inside the capture volume is constructed using non-uniform Fourier domain sampling. We simulate the reflectivity image in CST Studio Suite and test the method in read-scale rooms, where high-precision location is realized and the object contour can be observed.

Abstract:A passive Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based Real Time Locating System (RTLS) is presented in the paper. For the validation, a reader has been developed and complemented with a tag modulator to form a complete UHF RFID-based real time locating system focused on backscattering communication. PN sequences have been used to measure the TOA and estimate the distance between reader and tag. A TX-to-RX leakage canceller has been applied in the reader RF front-end to increase the isolation and enhance the sensitivity. Measurement results indicate that the estimation accuracy in real time is about 1.6 meters and the mean estimation error of 1000 times' measurement in 1 second is less than 0.5 meter.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Typical radio frequency identification (RFID) access control system can be ineffective if an unauthorized person tailgates an authorized person through an access area.OBJECTIVE: To propose a system by using indoor locating and tracking techniques address this problem, which is to prevent unauthorized Alzheimer's and dementia patients from getting lost including by tailgating.METHODS: To achieve accurate target location, passive RFID deployment strategy is studied and a fingerprinting based passive RFID localization algorithm is proposed. The proposed system was evaluated in a building environment to simulate the performance of access control. RFID reader was installed on ceiling near the access area and tags were stitched on both shoulders of the experiment subject's garments.RESULTS: The probability of the error distance within 0.3 m achieved 97% in the warning area; the location precision achieved 97% within 0.4 m in the monitoring area.CONCLUSIONS: The result showed that if an unauthorized person enters the restricted area, the system can initiate an alert signal accurately. Therefore, the proposed system is very suitable to be used in nursing home or hospital to prevent unauthorized personnel and assets entering/exiting a confined location.

A Scalable Passive RFID-Based Multi-User Indoor Location System

Abstract:RFID-based indoor location systems have been proved to be both accurate and cost-effective. However, current implementations mainly use active tags which suffer the issues of batteries replacement, installation, maintenance and per-unit cost. Besides, as the number of users grows, how to guarantee the stability and high speed transmission of the location information can be challenging. To address these challenges, 1) we propose a passive RFID-based system for localizing multi-users, and 2) detecting human motion from various types of embedded sensors to be supplemented. In addition, we also implement a reliable transmission protocol to guarantee the location data transition between RF nodes based on dynamic PRI. According to the performance analysis, the tracking accuracy of our system is well assured. Its quick responsiveness and good scalability, as well as low cost on energy and infrastructure, make this system a more cost-effective and easy-to-deploy solution for stable indoor positioning.

Abstract:Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) techniques are widely used in many ubiquitous applications. The most important usage of RFID techniques is to read the tags within a reader's interrogation area such that the objects attached with those tags can be identified. In real practice, it is common that a tag is physically in the interrogation range, but cannot be read by the reader, due to the multipath effect and other interference. This phenomenon, namely the hidden tag problem, is a big challenge to achieve high identification rate. To address this problem, most prior works depend on empirical or measurement-based methods to tune the transmission power for readers. Such a case-by-case solution is impractical for generic implementation. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally explore the reasons why hidden tag problem occurs. To alleviate its impact, we propose a unified and measurable model, PAL, to formulate this problem and its impact. Different from previous works, our solution is generic and fully compatible with existing EPC C1G2 protocol. The analysis and measurement based on our model can help to design and deploy RFID systems with high identification rate.
3D Passive Positioning Based on RFID Tag Array

Abstract:RFID-based passive positioning is essential for many Internet-of-Things applications. However, existing RFID-based passive positioning systems either have low precision or require multiple antenna arrays, which are bulky and expensive. In this paper, a 3D passive positioning scheme is developed based on RFID tag arrays. One of the tags can harvest the energy of the surrounding electromagnetic waves to power the embedded orientation sensors (an accelerometer and a magnetometer) and then send the orientation information of an object to an RFID reader. When an object is equipped with such RFID tag arrays, its direction can be estimated by exploring the phases of the signals reflected by the tags and the orientation of the object. Furthermore, based on the triangulation principle, the 3D location of an object can be determined by using multiple RFID tags on the object and two antennas at the RFID reader. Thus, compared with existing schemes, the required number of RFID antennas for 3D passive positioning is greatly reduced. The proposed scheme is implemented based on a COTS RFID platform. The experimental results show that the 90-percentile accuracy of the proposed system is within 9 centimeters.

Abstract:A dual frequency based Real Time Location System (RTLS) using passive Ultra-High Frequency Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is presented in this paper. Compared with traditional RFID location systems which mostly use RSSI measurement, the proposed approach has the unique virtue of small bandwidth requirement and high estimation resolution. The “dual frequency ranging principle” is first analyzed and the system is modeled in a simulation tool. Then some critical nonideal factors of the system are discussed and suggestions of the system's tolerance to each non-ideal factor are given. Simulation results show that the estimation accuracy can be less than 0.5 meter with I-Q relative mismatch under 0.08 and SNR at baseband above 21.5dB.

Abstract:RFIDs have been popularly used in daily life. To avoid being intruded on user privacy, proper protection is necessary. The privacy issues, such as object tracking and forgery of tags, are widely studied in the literature. Traditionally, the reader is regarded as a part of the system. In mobile RFID environment, however, anyone who holds the reader can connect to the server and acquire other information about the objects he owns. To verify whether a reader has the rights to access the tags has become essential. In this paper, we propose an RFID authentication protocol that can achieve the above goal and provide tag anonymity and forgery resistance. Hence, the user privacy is guaranteed.

Abstract:Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies are on their highway to pervasive usage. However privacy protection is still an important problem since RFID tags attached to items are so cost constrained. Privacy preserving authentication approaches are proposed to authenticate tags without private information leaking. Previously designed approaches based on synchronization seeks 0(1) complexity. While these synchronization based methods are efficient in normal case, they have weak points when desynchronized. When maliciously scanned, information stored in tag and reader goes farther and farther away from each other. An adversary can utilize this point to track a tag. We propose an Enhanced Synchronization aPproach for RFID private authentication, ESP, to solve this problem. ESP can eliminate the problem caused by Desynchronization Attack and help detecting Replay Attack Analysis shows that ESP enhances privacy protection while still maintaining the authentication efficiency.

Abstract:Current passive RFID systems face the challenges to locate mobile objects in real time in indoor environments, including the realization of low delay as well as effective cooperation among readers and accurate ranging ability in the physical layer. In order to overcome these challenges, this paper presents a low delay multi-reader passive RFID system using ultra high frequency (UHF) radio as the forward link from readers to tags and orthogonal time hopping pulse-position modulation (TH-PPM) impulse ultra-wideband radio (IR-UWB) over the dynamic framed slotted ALOHA algorithm as the backward link from tags to readers. The asymmetric radio links overlap parts of the forward and backward transmission and avoid reader-tag collisions. Readers cooperate via network synchronization by a server and a contention-based update strategy to acknowledge tags. An optimal system configured with 4 readers using 16 orthogonal TH sequences is suggested and operates 3 times faster than the theoretical potential of EPC Class-1 Generation-2 protocol with the listen-before-talk scheme.

Abstract:Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology aimed at eficiently identifying and tracking goods and assets. Such identification may be performed without requiring line-of-sight alignment or physical contact between the RFID tag and the RFID reader, whilst tracking is naturally achieved due to the short interrogation field of RFID readers. That is why the reduction in price of the RFID tags has been accompanied with an increasing attention paid to this technology. However, since tags are resource-constrained devices sending identification data wirelessly, designing secure and private RFID identification protocols is a challenging task. This scenario is even more complex when scalability must be met by those protocols. Assuming the existence of a lightweight, secure, private and scalable RFID identification protocol, there exist other concerns surrounding the RFID technology. Some of them arise from the technology itself, such as distance checking, but others are related to the potential of RFID systems to gather huge amount of tracking data. Publishing and mining such moving objects data is essential to improve efficiency of supervisory control, assets management and localisation, transportation, etc. However, obvious privacy threats arise if an individual can be linked with some of those published trajectories. The present dissertation contributes to the design of algorithms and protocols aimed at dealing with the issues explained above. First, we propose a set of protocols and heuristics based on a distributed architecture that improve the efficiency of the identification process without compromising privacy or security. Moreover, we present a novel distance-bounding protocol based on graphs that is extremely low-resource consuming. Finally, we present two trajectory anonymisation methods aimed at preserving the individuals' privacy when their trajectories are released.
