Abstract:The famous Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture plays an important role in the development of additive combinatorial number theory. In 2007 Z.W. Sun made the following further conjecture (which is the linear extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture): For any finite subset A of a field F and nonzero elements a1,…,an of F, we have|{a1x1+⋯+anxn:x1,…,xn∈A,andxi≠xjifi≠j}|⩾min{p(F)−δ,n(|A|−n)+1}, where the additive order p(F) of the multiplicative identity of F is different from n+1, and δ∈{0,1} takes the value 1 if and only if n=2 and a1+a2=0. In this paper we prove this conjecture of Sun when p(F)⩾n(3n−5)/2. We also obtain a sharp lower bound for the cardinality of the restricted sumset{x1+⋯+xn:x1∈A1,…,xn∈An,andP(x1,…,xn)≠0}, where A1,…,An are finite subsets of a field F and P(x1,…,xn) is a general polynomial over F.

Abstract:The famous Erdos-Heilbronn conjecture plays an important role in the development of additive combinatorics. In 2007 Z. W. Sun made the following further conjecture (which is the linear extension of the Erdos-Heilbronn conjecture): For any finite subset A of a field F and nonzero elements $a_1,...,a_n$ of F, the set {a_1x_1+...+a_nx_n: x_1,....,x_n are distinct elements of A} has cardinality at least min{p(F)-delta, n(|A|-n)+1}, where the additive order p(F) of the multiplicative identity of F is different from n+1, and delta=0,1 takes the value 1 if and only if n=2 and $a_1+a_2=0$. In this paper we prove this conjecture of Sun when $p(F)\geq n(3n-5)/2$. We also obtain a sharp lower bound for the cardinality of the restricted sumset {x_1+...+x_n: x_1\in A_1,...,x_n\in A_n, and P(x_1,...,x_n)\not=0}, where $A_1,...,A_n$ are finite subsets of a field F and $P(x_1,...,x_n)$ is a general polynomial over F.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:In 1970,R.L.Graham asked if the following is true: Let A be a finite sequence of n different positive integers a_i,1≤i≤n.Then(max)i,ja_i(a_i,a_j)≥n.Many number theorists have studied the problem.In 1996,this old conjecture though long and complicated,was proved correct in an outstandingly original by Balasubramanian and Soundararajan.Recently,Granville and Roesler conjectured that the largest element of the set agcd(a,b),bgcd(a,b),a∈A,b∈B is≥min(|A|,(|B|)),which generalizes Graham's conjecture.In this paper the conjecture is verified when both A and B have a prime.

Abstract:Let p be a prime, and let f (x) be an integer-valued polynomial. By a combinatorial approach, we obtain a nontrivial lower bound of the p-adic order of the sum k≡r (mod p β) n k (−1) k f k − r p α , where α β 0, n 0 and r ∈ Z. This polynomial extension of Fleck's congruence has various backgrounds and several consequences.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group of order n, and S= { ai }i2n= 1 a sequence of 2n - 1elements in G. For a ∈ G let r ( S, a ) denote the number of ways we can write a as a sum of n terms of S. If G is a subgroup of the additive group of F, where F is a field of prime characteristic p , then we have r(S,0)≡1 (mod p), and r(S,a)≡0 (mod p) for a∈ G \ {0}. This extends Gao's work[21 on a theorem of Erdos, Ginzburg and Ziv.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.
A Variety of Euler's Conjecture

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.

Abstract:Abstract We prove a weak version of the cross-product conjecture : $\textrm {F}(k+1,\ell ) \hskip .06cm \textrm {F}(k,\ell +1) \ge (\frac 12+\varepsilon ) \hskip .06cm \textrm {F}(k,\ell ) \hskip .06cm \textrm {F}(k+1,\ell +1)$ , where $\textrm {F}(k,\ell )$ is the number of linear extensions for which the values at fixed elements $x,y,z$ are k and $\ell $ apart, respectively, and where $\varepsilon>0$ depends on the poset. We also prove the converse inequality and disprove the generalized cross-product conjecture . The proofs use geometric inequalities for mixed volumes and combinatorics of words.

A Combinatorial Approach to Frobenius Numbers of Some Special Sequences (Complete Version)

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.

Abstract:We consider the generalization of the extended genus field of a prime degree cyclic Kummer extension of a rational function field obtained by R. Clement in 1992 to general Kummer extensions. We observe that the same approach of Clement works in general.

Enumerating Galois extensions of number fields

Abstract:Let $k$ be a number field. We provide an asymptotic formula for the number of Galois extensions of $k$ with absolute discriminant bounded by some $X \geq 1$, as $X\to\infty$. We also provide an asymptotic formula for the closely related count of extensions $K/k$ whose normal closure has discriminant bounded by $X$. The key behind these results is a new upper bound on the number of Galois extensions of $k$ with a given Galois group $G$ and discriminant bounded by $X$; we show the number of such extensions is $O_{[k:\mathbb{Q}],G} (X^{ \frac{4}{\sqrt{|G|}}})$. This improves over the previous best bound $O_{k,G,\epsilon}(X^{\frac{3}{8}+\epsilon})$ due to Ellenberg and Venkatesh. In particular, ours is the first bound for general $G$ with an exponent that decays as $|G| \to \infty$.
