Abstract:Sandstone exists widely in nature. The good permeability of hydrous sandstone makes it prone to collapse, which can cause natural disasters. Hence, studies into damage assessment of hydrous sandstone are crucial. Moisture is an important factor in sandstone structural damage. The major damage assessment methods of hydrous sandstone at present cannot satisfy real-time and portability requirements. In this study, acoustic emission (AE), computed tomography (CT), and electroencephalogram (EEG) techniques are combined for real-time damage assessment of hydrous sandstone. First, a real geotechnical engineering environment is simulated, and the AE signal stimulated from hydrous sandstone under gradually changing loading is analyzed. A mapping method of AE and moisture is proposed using the support vector machine algorithm. Second, a comprehensive damage assessment method is developed based on the CT technique. The mapping rule between moisture and damage level is determined through a model experiment. Third, a real-time damage assessment function of hydrous sandstone is proposed by considering two pieces of information: the assessment level of single AE, which varies with time, and the superposition effect of many AE events. Lastly, eight visual colors for warning are screened according to different damage states, and an EEG experiment is conducted to demonstrate their diverse excitations of the human brain's concentration.
Integrated Detection and Analysis of Earthquake Disaster Information Using Airborne Data

Abstract:The primary goal of this paper is to discuss an integrated approach to efficiently obtaining earthquake damage information. We developed a framework to rapidly obtain earthquake damage information using post-earthquake airborne optical images. The framework is a standard process that includes data selection, preprocessing, damage factor identification, damage factor evaluation and the development of an earthquake damage information map. We can obtain damage information on severely affected regions using this framework, which will aid in planning rescue and rehabilitation efforts following disasters. We used the integrated approach to obtain damage information using the Lushan earthquake (magnitude 7.0, 20 April 2013) as a case study. The result were as follows: (1) 644 collapsed buildings and 4599 damaged buildings accounted for 13.90% and 96.24%, respectively, of the total number of buildings in the study area; (2) 334 landslides (total area of 691,674.5 m2) were detected and were found at greater probabilities at elevations of 1400–1500 m and higher slope; (3) no secondary disasters, such as barrier lakes, were detected; (4) 15 damaged sections (total of 306 m) were detected in the lifelines, and road sections that are at a high risk of damage (total of 2.4 km) were identified; and (5) key structures, including Yuxi River Dam and three bridges, were intact. Integrating the earthquake damage factor information generated a comprehensive Lushan earthquake damage information map. The integrated approach was proven to be effective using the Lushan earthquake as a case study and can be applied to assess earthquake damage to facilitate efficient rescue efforts.
Simulation Of Collapse Process Of Masonry Walls Based On Expanded Discrete Element Method

Abstract:The performance of masonry wall under lateral forces is the basic content of masonry structure anti-seismic and anti-collapse researching. One calculation model based on Expanded Discrete Element Method has been established, and the EDEM program has been composed by MATLAB language in this paper. The program and model are able to simulate the full stressed process of brick masonry wall. The lateral force-displacement curves from load-beginning to collapse of masonry walls and displacements of each unit under stress are obtained. The simulating results are in good agreement with the existing experiment in some critical phase. And the masonry walls made with different strength material including brick and mortar, different level of vertical pressure on the top of the walls and different constructions methods are considered, and the corresponding lateral force-displacement curves, deforming figures and cracks distribution are achieved. At last, the affections on the performance of masonry walls under lateral and vertical loading from some different parameters are gained.

Abstract:Ever since ancient times, earthquakes have been a major threat to the civil infrastructures and the safety of human beings. The majority of casualties in earthquake disasters are caused by the damaged civil infrastructures but not by the earthquake itself. Therefore, the efficient and accurate post-earthquake assessment of the conditions of structural damage has been an urgent need for human society. Traditional ways for post-earthquake structural assessment rely heavily on field investigation by experienced experts, yet, it is inevitably subjective and inefficient. Structural response data are also applied to assess the damage; however, it requires mounted sensor networks in advance and it is not intuitional. As many types of damaged states of structures are visible, computer vision-based post-earthquake structural assessment has attracted great attention among the engineers and scholars. With the development of image acquisition sensors, computing resources and deep learning algorithms, deep learning-based post-earthquake structural assessment has gradually shown potential in dealing with image acquisition and processing tasks. This paper comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art studies of deep learning-based post -earthquake structural assessment in recent years. The conventional way of image processing and machine learning-based structural assessment are presented briefly. The workflow of the methodology for computer vision and deep learning-based post -earthquake structural assessment was introduced. Then, applications of assessment for multiple civil infrastructures are presented in detail. Finally, the challenges of current studies are summarized for reference in future works to improve the efficiency, robustness and accuracy in this field.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) have increased in the accumulation rate in China and landfill is the most common method of MSW disposal management. A landfill failure occurs when the great majority of rocks, soil materials or debris flows move down from a slope due to gravity. The physical vulnerability of the catastrophic landfill failure occurred in Shenzhen 2015 is analyzed in this paper. It deduced that the vulnerability would increase with the impact pressure and maximum bending moment of each building. Typical deformation characteristics of affected buildings, such as bending moment and shear force are simulated using ETABS to determine whether the building will collapse after the impact of the landfill failure. A vulnerability curve indicates the relationship between impact pressure of the landfill failure, the building type, building use and the damage degree of the building.

Abstract:The cultural, architectural, and historical heritage value of the Great Wall of China drives the need to maintain, rehabilitate, and restore its structural integrity from artificial and natural damage. In this study, a hybrid architectural visualization and structural collapse simulation of the Ming Great Wall (1368–1644 AD) are conducted in Blender based on the unit blocks and a physics engine (i.e., Bullet Constraint Builder). Visualized failure predictions caused by four damages, i.e., stone layer collapse, step collapse, parapet walls inward tilting, and stone layer bulge, are developed and performed on a strength basis. The main input parameters are brick dimensions, friction coefficient, and adhesive/glue strength, while the primary output includes collapse, and global and local stabilities. Finally, the results show that the combination of unit blocks and a physical engine can visually simulate the occurrence process of the Great Wall's failures with preliminary engineering outcome, especially those related to collapse, and can also predict the adverse consequences of the precipitating factors.

Abstract:Building damage induced by the excavation conducted for the three-storey basement of the Kerry Center - a modernised business centre comprising large-scale departmental stores, business offices, apartments and a hotel in Hangzhou, China - was investigated. A method for estimating the building damage level considering the spatial effects of soil deformation around the excavation was also developed. The excavation site is in the Hangzhou urban centre, near to which stands an ancient building known as the Red House. Settlement, horizontal displacement and cracks on the Red House were studied to estimate the actual damage level. Surface settlements around several excavations were analysed to obtain a surface profile along the excavation. The results showed that the profile could be simplified to a parabolic model. A damage criterion based on the average state of strain in the distorted portion of the structure was derived considering the spatial effects of soil deformation. Different damage criteria, including tensile stress, cracks, distortion and horizontal strain, were used to evaluate the damage level of the Red House. The result obtained from the damage criterion presented in this paper agrees well with the actual building damage level. This criterion formed the basis of the preliminary analysis conducted prior to finite-element modelling.

Abstract:An increasing number of dumpsites have been built to stockpile a large amount of construction solid waste (CSW) during urbanization. Physical vulnerability assessment to CSW landslides plays a critical role in evaluating the safety risk of the potentially affected buildings. A catastrophic CSW landslide occurred in Shenzhen, China, in December 2015, which directly destroyed 75 buildings along the travel path. In this study, based on the statistical fundamental information of the damaged buildings and the reproduced motion process of the landslide using numerical modeling, both simulation-based progressive destruction process characterization and statistical-based analyses of the relationships between intensity data and vulnerability indexes are comprehensively performed to quantify the physical vulnerability of the damaged buildings, identify the failure models, and determine critical factors for controlling the building damages subjected to the Shenzhen CSW landslide. A typical vertical continuous collapse model due to the bending failure of the bottom column and the upward extension of the plastic hinge area is observed in the established single-frame structure under a set of impact pressure data. The occurrence of building failures close to the time of peak impact pressures controlled by the dynamic pressure indicated by velocity, along with the recorded flow velocity and impact pressure data exceeding the corresponding threshold values for all affected buildings, both suggest that flow velocity and impact pressure indicators are more appropriate for quantifying the vulnerability of buildings exposed to high-mobility CSW landslides. The conclusions could help CSW dumpsite stakeholders to better perform risk assessment and mitigate hazard propagation.

Abstract:By the dynamic test,the dynamic properties of the silty sand of Hangzhou Qiangtang River flood protection levee are studied.The possibility of liquefaction is judged by the in-situ and laboratory tests.The liquefaction and dynamic stability are studied by adopting the Biot’s dynamic consolidation equation to do finite element analysis,which can consider the increasing as well as dissipating of pore water pressure during the earthquake.By the inverse analysis method,the acceleration at the basement rock obtained from free surface is inputted as seismic loading.The result will help us to understand the levee behavior during the earthquake intensity of 7 degree.

Abstract:A lot of architectural heritage in China are urgently in need to carry out seismic assessment for further conservation. In this paper, a seismic capacity evaluation approach for architectural heritage using finite element analysis with precision three-dimensional data was proposed. The Limestone Hall of Shaanxi Province was taken as an example. First, low attitude unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry and a close-range photogrammetry camera were used to collect multiple view images to obtain the precision three-dimensional current model of the Limestone. Second, the dimensions of internal structures of Limestone Hall are obtained by means of structural analysis; re-establishing the ideal model of Limestone Hall based on the modeling software. Third, a finite element analysis was conducted to find out the natural frequency and seismic stress in various conditions with the 3D model using ANSYS software. Finally, the seismic capacity analysis results were comprehensively evaluated for the risk assessment and simulation. The results showed that for architectural heritage with a multilayer structure, utilizing photogrammetric surveying and mapping, 3D software modeling, finite element software simulation, and seismic evaluation for simulation was feasible where the precision of the modeling and parameters determine the accuracy of the simulation. The precise degree of the three-dimensional model, the accurate degree of parameter measurement and estimation, the setting of component attributes in the finite element model and the strategy of finite element analysis have an important effect on the result of seismic assessment. The main body structure of the Limestone Hall could resist an VII-degree earthquake at most, and the ridge of the second floor could not resist a V-degree earthquake due to unsupported conditions. The maximum deformation of the Limestone Hall during the earthquake occurred in the tabia layer below the second roof.

And reliability, can more accurately identify poor geological conditions, can increase construction safety and reduce economic losses. Based on the comprehensive CT geological survey data, this paper uses nanomaterials to construct software DEM to model the porous medium of the Yanziyan dangerous rock mass in Jinfo Mountain, Nanchuan District, Chongqing and to estimate the area and volume of the collapse potential area of the high-steep dangerous rock mass parameter.

Abstract:Seismic risk estimation for urban building clusters is essential when developing regional seismic resilience models. A masonry structure is a type of building with a large stock, broad applicability, and simplified construction technology. The traditional seismic intensity measures and fuzzy quantification of structural vulnerability levels result in low accuracy in estimating and predicting seismic damage to masonry structure clusters. This paper proposes a method for evaluating bivariate seismic intensity measure. Nonlinear dynamic and spectral analyses were conducted on real acceleration records monitored by ten stations during the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan, China, on May 12, 2008. The outdated seismic vulnerability level of masonry structures is updated, and an optimized structural seismic risk model based on the seismic damage database of 2407 masonry structures in Dujiangyan city under the influence of the Wenchuan earthquake is established. An innovative seismic risk membership index algorithm was developed, and a vulnerability curve was generated for masonry structures considering multiple risk membership indices. An improved seismic risk index calculation function is proposed using the proposed updated vulnerability level, and the seismic risk index curve and stripe model of typical urban masonry building clusters are established. According to the field investigation of the actual structures in Dujiangyan city affected by the Wenchuan earthquake, the typical failure features and disaster mechanism of masonry structures are reported and analysed, and measures and methods to improve and enhance the seismic capacity of such buildings are proposed. The developed seismic risk model for urban masonry structures can contribute positively to the development of relatively accurate seismic resilience models for urban buildings and can improve the accuracy of seismic risk estimation for masonry structures.

Abstract:One of the primary concerns in the field of seismic risk assessment for underground structures is establishing an accurate connection between seismic intensity and structural responses. The objective of this work is to conduct a rational support vector machine (SVM) model for generating mass data and improved fragility curves of cross-fault hydraulic tunnels (CFHTs). The results highlight that the 900 sets, multiple earthquake intensity measures, and cubic polynomial kernel function of the SVM model can improve reliability in evaluating structural performance. Additionally, the improved Cloud analysis method is more suitable for seismic performance than the typical Cloud analysis.

The Analysis of the Microstructure and the Mechanical Properties of Land Subsidence Area in Suzhou

Abstract:The land subsidence is one of the main geological disaster in Suzhou,China.Owing to long-term extraction of groundwater,the land subsidence area has continuously extended which hinders the development of local economy.A series of experiments have been carried out in this study.In order to study the mechanism of land subsidence,the experiment combines the quantitative analysis of soil microstructure with the macroscopic mechanical test,and the soil samples were taken from a 200m borehole in Shengze,Suzhou.A larger number of SEM images were obtained after using the method of vacuum freeze-drying.The imaging analysis software PCAS was used to acquire the parameters of soil microstructure and the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) techniques were used to monitor the soil layers in the borehole.The data in liquid and plastic limit tests,quick consolidated tests,the quantitative analysis of microscopic structure and the data of distributed fiber optic sensing indicate that the moisture content,the liquid index and the compression coefficient get smaller and the microstructure orientation become more obvious with the depth of strata increasing.There is a large number of microscopic pore structures in the waterbearing sand layer of the second confined and the volume is big enough,which causes a great potential of subsidence in the future and this remains to be investigated.
Three-Dimensional Point Cloud Analysis for Building Seismic Damage Information

Abstract:Postearthquake building damage assessment requires professional judgment; however, there are factors such as high workload and human error. Making use of Terrestrial Laser Scanning data, this paper presents a method for seismic damage information extraction. This new method is based on principal component analysis calculating the local surface curvature of each point in the point cloud. Then use the nearest point angle algorithm, combined with the data features of the actual measured value to identify point cloud seismic information, and filter the points that tend to the plane by setting the threshold value. Based on the statistical analysis of the normal vector, the raw point cloud data are deplanarized to obtain the preliminary results of seismic damage information. The density clustering algorithm is used to denoise the initially extracted seismic damage information. Ultimately, we can obtain the distribution patterns and characteristics of cracks in the walls of the building. The extraction result of the seismic damage information point cloud data is compared with the photos collected at the site, showing that the algorithm steps successfully identify the crack and shed wall skin information recorded in the site photos (identification rate: 95%). Point cloud distribution maps of cracked and shed siding areas determine quantitative information on seismic damage, providing a higher level of performance and detail than direct contact measurements.

Abstract:The detection of masonry damage is essential for preventing potentially disastrous outcomes. Manual inspection can, however, take a long time and be hazardous to human inspectors. Automation of the inspection process using novel computer vision and machine learning algorithms can be a more efficient and safe solution to prevent further deterioration of the masonry structures. Most existing 2D vision-based methods are limited to qualitative damage classification, 2D localization, and in-plane quantification. In this study, we present a 3D vision-based methodology for accurate masonry damage detection, which offers a more robust solution with a greater field of view, depth of vision, and the ability to detect failures in complex environments. First, images of the masonry specimens are collected to generate a 3D point cloud. Second, 3D point clouds processing methods are developed to evaluate the masonry damage. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through experiments on structural masonry components. Our experiments showed the proposed system can effectively classify damage states and localize and quantify critical damage features. The result showed the proposed method can improve the level of autonomy during the inspection of masonry structures.

Abstract:With the development of mechanics and computer technology, computer simulation has become an important tool in the structure analysis and design. Especially when the structures are under disaster load such as blast, penetration, impact of collapse or typhoon, it is difficult to analyze with test method, while the advantages of computer simulation method such as safe, efficient and cheap, are shown obviously in these problems. Various simulation systems are classified and discussed in this paper generally. And four practical examples are presented to demonstrate the function of simulation system. The first one is the analysis for the safety of blast-resist-doors under blast load. The second one is the study on new earth-penetration-weapons. The third one is the simulation on the collapse of World Trade Center (WTC) in New York. And the forth one is the real-time display system for bridge under typhoon. These examples are used to illuminate the advantage of computer simulation technology on disaster load conditions and emphasis some problems in the simulation.
Earthquake Disaster Simulation of Civil Infrastructures: From Tall Buildings to Urban Areas

Abstract:Based on more than 12 years of systematic investigation on earthquake disaster simulation of civil infrastructures, this book covers the major research outcomes including a number of novel computational models, high performance computing methods and realistic visualization techniques for tall buildings and urban areas, with particular emphasize on collapse prevention and mitigation in extreme earthquakes, earthquake loss evaluation and seismic resilience. Typical engineering applications to several tallest buildings in the world (e.g., the 632 m tall Shanghai Tower and the 528 m tall Z15 Tower) and selected large cities in China (the Beijing Central Business District, Xi'an City, Taiyuan City and Tangshan City) are also introduced to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed computational models and techniques. The high-fidelity computational model developed in this book has proven to be the only feasible option to date for earthquake-induced collapse simulation of supertall buildings that are higher than 500 m. More importantly, the proposed collapse simulation technique has already been successfully used in the design of some real-world supertall buildings, with significant savings of tens of thousands of tons of concrete and steel, whilst achieving a better seismic performance and safety. The proposed novel solution for earthquake disaster simulation of urban areas using nonlinear multiple degree-of-freedom (MDOF) model and time-history analysis delivers several unique advantages: (1) true representation of the characteristic features of individual buildings and ground motions; (2) realistic visualization of earthquake scenarios, particularly dynamic shaking of buildings during earthquakes; (3) detailed prediction of seismic response and losses on each story of every building at any time period. The proposed earthquake disaster simulation technique has been successfully implemented in the seismic performance assessments and earthquake loss predictions of several central cities in China. The outcomes of the simulation as well as the feedback from the end users are encouraging, particularly for the government officials and/or administration department personnel with limited professional knowledge of earthquake engineering. The book offers readers a systematic solution to earthquake disaster simulation of civil infrastructures. The application outcomes demonstrate a promising future of the proposed advanced techniques. The book provides a long-awaited guide for academics and graduate students involving in earthquake engineering research and teaching activities. It can also be used by structural engineers for seismic design of supertall buildings.
Anti-seismic Analysis of Masonry-Reinforced Concrete Composite Structure Based on LS-DYNA

Abstract:Previous great earthquakes have performed serious structural damages to masonry structure, which also have caused great casualties and property damage, in order to enhance the structural anti-seismic class of civilian buildings, a new kind of combined structure form is introduced in the thesis, which is formed by two parts, masonry structure and special reinforced concrete shear wall structure. The reinforced concrete part can be effective in enhancing the anti-seismic performance of masonry residence, besides reinforced concrete tube structure can also become the nearest refuge when disaster occurred, even when the whole structure collapse, it can still remain relatively complete partial structures and a large space of survival. LS-DYNA, software of finite element, is used to study the structure, simulations of the response procedures of composite structure under earthquake load are made, as well as the destruction of composite structure. According to calculation and analysis, it can be known that this kind of composite structure can obviously improve seismic resistant capability, and the level of destruction is relative smaller, which can meet the requirements for fortification against earthquake that is "keeping intact in minor earthquakes, repairable in medium earthquakes, standing upright in major earthquakes"
