Abstract:In present of multi-path effect, the inter symbol interference (ISI) always exists in the OFDM/OQAM system and the preamble based channel estimation for the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplex with cyclic prefix (CP-OFDM) is not feasible any more. Considering the characteristic of the extended Gaussian function (EGF), we propose two modified preamble based channel estimation by adding zero-value guard symbols, which are located at both sides (method A) and the left side (method B) of preamble reference symbol. Compared with the CP-OFDM system, the proposed preamble based channel estimation achieves 2dB improvement. Furthermore, we shorten the preamble without zero-value guard symbol to improve the spectrum efficiency. Unfortunately, the residual inter symbol interference (ISI) from neighbor symbols degrade the channel estimation performance. We propose an iterative channel estimation method for OFDM/OQAM system to remove the residual ISI. Simulation results demonstrate that those proposed preamble design and iterative channel estimation methods are effective for OFDM/OQAM system.

Abstract:In this paper, an effective preamble structure with only one zero-value guard symbols for OFDM/OQAM systems is proposed to improve spectrum efficiency. Moreover, a preamble interference cancellation (PIC) based channel estimation (CE) scheme is proposed to mitigate the residual ISI in OFDM/OQAM systems. Simulation results prove that the proposed preamble with PIC based channel estimation is an effective structure for OFDM/OQAM systems.

Abstract:The existed preamble structure for orthogonal frequency division multiplex/offset QAM (OFDM/OQAM) system requires two zero-value guard symbols to guarantee ISI and ICI avoidance (equivalent to 3/2 complex value symbols in OFDM with cyclic prefix system), which leads to OFDM/OQAM system with low spectrum efficiency. Abstract:For wireless transmission, the channel estimation is necessary to improve the performance of receiver. In the ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless systems, there are two practicable modulation schemes: orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier direct-sequence UWB (DS-UWB). The OFDM based scheme is an attractive mode because it can capture the multipath energy more efficiently than the DS-UWB. However, most investigations of channel estimation are focused on the latter. On the other hand, though much work has been done for channel estimation of traditional OFDM realizations, there are many differences between narrow-band and UWB systems. In this paper, through the research of architecture and system model of OFDM based UWB wireless communications, especially the structure of preamble training sequences and pilot subcarriers, approaches of channel estimation and complexity reduction are proposed according to the channel characteristics of UWB wireless transmission.

Abstract:Since preamble-based channel estimation method can overcome the intrinsic inter-symbol interference and inter-carrier interference in OFDM/Offset QAM(OFDM/OQAM) system,it becomes the commonly used structure in similar systems.In this paper,according to the pilot structure and the characteristic of OFDM/ OQAM signal,the correlation between the adjacent sub-carriers is analyzed,and in turn an improved channel estimation algorithm is proposed.Through calculating the correlation coefficient between the adjacent subcarriers,weighting operation is carried out in frequency domain to reduce the effect of interference and noise on channel estimation.Analysis and simulation results demonstrate that this algorithm can effectively improve both channel estimation accuracy and system performances of traditional ones.

Abstract:Compared with OFDM system with Cyclic Prefix (CP-OFDM) which satisfies strictly complex field orthogonality, OFDM/Offset QAM system (OFDM/OQAM) only satisfies the real field orthogonality. Therefore, in present of multipath fading channel, the Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter Carrier Interference (ICI) always exist in the OFDM/OQAM system if utilizing the conventional preamble based channel estimation method for CP-OFDM system. In this paper, a joint iterative channel estimation and detection is proposed for OFDM/OQAM system. The proposed method exchanges the information between channel estimator and demodulator to remove the ISI and ICI effectively. Simulation results demonstrate that as the number of iterative time increasing, BER performance of the joint iterative channel estimation and detection method is approximately close to perfect channel estimation.

Abstract:Filter bank-based multicarrier communications (FBMC) have recently attracted increased interest in both wired (e.g., xDSL, PLC) and wireless (e.g., cognitive radio) applications, due to their enhanced flexibility, higher spectral efficiency, and better spectral containment compared to conventional OFDM. A particular type of FBMC, the so-called FBMC/OQAM or OFDM/OQAM system, consisting of pulse shaped OFDM carrying offset QAM (OQAM) symbols, has received increasing attention due to, among other features, its higher spectral efficiency and implementation simplicity. It suffers, however, from an imaginary inter-carrier/inter-symbol interference that complicates signal processing tasks such as channel estimation. This paper focuses on channel estimation for OFDM/OQAM systems based on a known preamble. A review of the existing preamble structures and associated channel estimation methods is given, for both single- (SISO) and multiple-antenna (MIMO) systems. The various preambles are compared via simulations in both mildly and highly frequency selective channels.

Abstract:The classical preamble-based channel estimation for pulse shaping orthogonal frequency division multiplex/offset QAM (OFDM/OQAM) systems requires zero-value guard symbols to guarantee interference avoidance, which leads to low spectral efficiency. In this study, we cut down the preamble structure without zero-value guard symbol to reduce preamble resource overhead. However, the intrinsic imaginary interference from unknown data symbols around degrades the channel estimation performance. Therefore, we provide three different methods to remove or even utilize the intrinsic interference. Simulation results demonstrate that compared with the classical methods, the proposed approaches achieve approximate performance and save preamble resource.1

Abstract:In conventional preamble based channel estimation in OFDM/offset QAM (OFDM/OQAM) system, both the even index subcarriers and the odd index subcarriers are with identical value selected from {+/- 1} respectively to avoid inter-carrier interference (ICI), if and only if channel frequency response in neighbor few subcarriers remain invariable. However, it requires larger coherent bandwidth. In this paper, we propose an effective preamble design with ICI cancellation for channel estimation in OFDM/OQAM system. With this structure, we only utilize even (or odd) index of subcarriers as reference signal to avoid ICI, and then the channel information of remaining subcarriers can be estimated by the interpolation approach. Based on the sampling theorem, the mean square error (MSE) performance of the proposed preamble design is analyzed, where channel estimation performance is same for all subcarriers. Simulation and analytical results demonstrate that the proposed preamble design with ICI cancellation method outperforms the conventional one in term of channel estimation accuracy in OFDM/OQAM system.

Abstract:Suppressing the intrinsic imaginary interference (IMI) effect induced by the multiple-path fading channel is the key technology for maintaining the good performance of the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing offset-quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) systems. Recently, the first theoretical discussion on the IMI effect and the corresponding frequency-domain channel estimation method for polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) coherent optical OFDM/OQAM (CO-OFDM/OQAM) system has been studied. The full-loaded and the half-loaded channel estimation methods have been proposed to mitigate the IMI effect. However, for these frequency-domain methods, the condition that the symbol interval is much longer than the maximum channel delay spread has to be satisfied. When the transmission distance is long, the frequency-domain residual errors induced by the chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) reduce the channel estimation accuracy evidently. In this paper, we systematically discuss the time-domain channel transmission model for PDM CO-OFDM/OQAM systems. With the analysis of the distribution of the received additive noise, we propose the time-domain least square (TDLS) channel estimation method for PDM CO-OFDM/OQAM systems. Compared with the frequency-domain methods, the TDLS method promotes the system robustness against both the IMI effect and the additive noise significantly. The computational complexities and the transmission performance have been compared for both the TDLS and the frequency-domain full-loaded methods. The theoretical analysis is validated by numerical Monte Carlo simulations of the PDM CO-OFDM/OQAM system.

Abstract:Channel estimation is a key issue in time domain synchronous-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system, which is usually based on pseudorandom noise (PN) sequences time domain correlation. However, in space time block coding (STBC)-based TDS-OFDM MIMO system, PN sequences received in each receiver antenna are the overlaps of multiple transmitters' linear convolution of PN sequences with corresponding channel responses. Thus, channel state information (CSI) can not be estimated accurately only by means of PN sequences time domain correlation. In this paper we propose a joint time-frequency domain channel estimation scheme for STBC-based TDS-OFDM MIMO system with 2 transmitter antennas and 2 receiver antennas. To aid the channel estimation, every two signal frames in a super frame are grouped into a signal frame group at the transmitter side. For the first frame of each signal frame group, 315 Transmission Parameters Signaling (TPS) symbols are inserted equally with 12 OFDM sub-carries intervals in both transmitter branches. While for the second frame, TPS symbols are inserted equally only in the first transmitter branch, and in the second transmitter branch zero symbols are inserted in the corresponding positions. By exploiting such an elaborate TPS inserting rule and PN sequence time domain correlation, our proposed scheme can estimate CSI easily in both time domain and frequency domain. Simulation results show that our scheme can estimate the CSI accurately: the mean absolute error between the estimated values and the original values is less than 0.01 under slow-fading channel when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 8 dB.

Abstract:For downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based massive multiple-inputmultiple-output transmission over the time-varying channel, channel estimation is very challenging due to numerous channel coefficients to be estimated. To track this problem, this paper proposes a novel sparse channel estimation scheme, exploiting the sparsity in the delay domain and the high correlation in the spatial domain. By utilizing the basis expansion model (BEM) to model the time variation and the generalized-spatial BEM to model the spatial correlation, we are able to significantly reduce the number of the coefficients to be estimated. Then, the channel estimation is formulated into a compressive sensing problem with a quasiblock-sparse matrix to be recovered. Motivated by the quasi-block sparsity, a novel quasi-block simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (QBSO) algorithm is developed to recover the channel, which seeks nonzero channel tap positions at the first stage and calculates the channel coefficients at the second stage. Moreover, an adaptive-QBSO algorithm is further designed to improve the recovery accuracy, where the measurement matrix is adaptively designed based on the estimated virtual angle of departure, and thus, the sparsity representation can be strengthened. We also discuss the design of pilot pattern including pilot values and positions. Simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of our proposed channel estimation scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, the practical channel estimation methods and their respective hardware structures for OFDM systems are analyzed. An improved method is proposed as well as its hardware structures. The new method stems from the statistic properties of the channel impulse response and requires no prior information about the channel. With a modest complexity increase, simulation results show that the proposed method greatly outperforms the previous methods.

Abstract:We analyze the performance of a coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system and a serial decode and forward relay transmission multihop coherent free-space optical OFDM system using an exponential distribution atmospheric turbulence model under the circumstance of strong atmospheric turbulence. The attenuation of the atmospheric channel fading model mainly considers the light intensity scintillation caused by atmospheric turbulence and interaction between the path consumption, the transmitter and the receiver. The OFDM signal mapping method uses quadrature amplitude modulation. We also derive the formulas of the outage probability and symbol error rate of the coherent OFDM and multihop system, respectively, under the conditions described above. In addition, a simulation is performed, which is essential to evaluate the influence of key factors including coherent detection in a number of relay nodes, the mapping orders, and the number of subcarriers, which have a significant effect on the outage performance and the bit error performance of the OFDM-FSO system under the strong atmospheric turbulence. Abstract:When orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is used in high-speed mobile scenarios, the traditional implementation of the OFDM receiver causes significant performance degradation. This letter proposes a subband superposed oversampled OFDM (SS-OOFDM) scheme for accommodating the diverse scenarios, including the scenarios with high mobility. To track the fast-varying mobile channel, a time-domain channel estimation method is developed to first obtain the channel impulse response (CIR) values at pilots by means of the basis expansion model. Subsequently, by utilizing Slepian sequences-based interpolation, the CIR values at data symbols are reconstructed. Furthermore, we design a subband decision feedback and feedforward equalizer for exploiting the Doppler and multipath diversity gains. Simulation results show that the SS-OOFDM, especially in high-speed mobile channels, outperforms the traditional OFDM receiver in terms of the bit-error-rate performance.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can be combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems to improve the capacity and quality of wireless communications. In this article, a channel estimation technique in both space and frequency domain for MIMO-OFDM systems is proposed. It is shown that the proposed scheme with space-frequency pilot tones achieve optimal minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimation. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method achieves good performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of blind channel estimation for multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems via second order statistics (SOS) only. By an appropriate re-modulation on the received signal blocks, we find an effective way to apply the subspace based channel estimation for the cyclic prefix (CP) based MIMO-OFDM system when the number of the receive antennas is no less than the number of transmit antennas. Suitable relationships are built between the proposed algorithm and one existing technique (called ZPSOS in the future) for zero-padding (ZP) based MIMO-OFDM systems, thanks to the re-modulation considered. Consequently, many advantages could be directly inherited from ZPSOS, for example, robustness to channel order over-estimation, guaranteeing the estimation identiflability. By comparing these two algorithms, we found that they could provide similar channel estimation accuracy but the proposed method could beat the other in terms of bit error rate (BER). Moreover, adopting CP-based OFDM is compatible with many existing standards and applications, which shows great potential of our proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Offset spatial modulation (OSM) is an attractive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) transmission scheme, which alleviates the switching frequency limitation of the radio frequency chain in the spatial modulation technology. In this article, we investigate the bit error performance of OSM in the presence of imperfect channel estimation toward a practical transmission scenario. More specifically, with the aid of union bound technique, a general performance analysis framework of the OSM system with channel estimation errors is proposed. Based on the above analysis framework, the upper bounds of bit error rate for the static and dynamic modes of OSM are both derived, respectively. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the analytical bounds are tight for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and variable system configurations.
New subspace algorithm for blind channel estimation in OFDM systems

Abstract:In order to increase the transmission efficiency,a subspace-based algorithm for blind channel estimation using second-order statistics is proposed in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems.Because the transmission equation of OFDM systems does not exactly have the desired structure to directly derive a subspace algorithm,the algorithm first divides the OFDM signals into three parts,then,by exploiting the redundancy introduced by the cyclic prefix (CP) in OFDM signals,a new equation with Toeplitz channel matrix is derived.Based on the equation,a new blind subspace algorithm is developed.Toeplitz structure eases the derivation of the subspace algorithm and practical computation.Moreover the algorithm does not change the existing OFDM system,is robust to channel order overdetermination,and the channel zero locations.The performances are demonstrated by simulation results.
