Abstract:A system product line (PL) often has a large number of reusable and configurable requirements, which in practice are organized hierarchically based on the architecture of the PL. However, the current literature lacks approaches that can help practitioners to systematically and automatically develop structured and configuration-ready PL requirements repositories. In the context of product line engineering and model-based engineering, automatic requirements structuring can benefit from models. Such a structured PL requirements repository can greatly facilitate the development of product-specific requirements repository, the product configuration at the requirements level, and the smooth transition to downstream product configuration phases (e.g., at the architecture design phase). In this paper, we propose a methodology with tool support, named as Zen-ReqConfig, to tackle the above challenge. Zen-ReqConfig is built on existing model-based technologies, natural language processing, and similarity measure techniques. It automatically devises a hierarchical structure for a PL requirements repository, automatically identifies variabilities in textual requirements, and facilitates the configuration of products at the requirements level, based on two types of variability modeling techniques [i.e., cardinality-based feature modeling (CBFM) and a UML-based variability modeling methodology (named as SimPL)]. We evaluated Zen-ReqConfig with five case studies. Results show that Zen-ReqConfig can achieve a better performance based on the character-based similarity measure Jaro than the term-based similarity measure Jaccard. With Jaro, Zen-ReqConfig can allocate textual requirements with high precision and recall, both over 95% on average and identify variabilities in textual requirements with high precision (over 97% on average) and recall (over 94% on average). Zen-ReqConfig achieved very good time performance: with less than a second for generating a hierarchical structure and less than 2 s on average for allocating a requirement. When comparing SimPL and CBFM, no practically significant difference was observed, and they both performed well when integrated with Zen-ReqConfig.

Within the lifecycle of software development, requirements engineering (RE) and architecting are two closely related activities, and so are their associated knowledge. In this paper, we target specific RE problems and present knowledgebased approaches to tackle them by integrating concrete results from the AK community. This work can subsequently stimulate further research in knowledge-based RE, which may in turn feed its results back into software architecture. Abstract:Analyzing, identifying, and classifying nonfunctional requirements from requirement documents is time-consuming and challenging. Machine learning-based approaches have been proposed to minimize analysts' efforts, labor, and stress. However, the traditional approach of supervised machine learning necessitates manual feature extraction, which is time-consuming. This study presents a novel deep-learning framework for NFR classification to overcome these limitations. The framework leverages a more profound architecture that naturally captures feature structures, possesses enhanced representational power, and efficiently captures a broader context than shallower structures. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, an experiment was conducted on two widely-used datasets, encompassing 914 NFR instances. Performance analysis was performed on the applied models, and the results were evaluated using various metrics. Notably, the DReqANN model outperforms the other models in classifying NFR, achieving precision between 81 and 99.8%, recall between 74 and 89%, and F1-score between 83 and 89%. These significant results highlight the exceptional efficacy of the proposed deep learning framework in addressing NFR classification tasks, showcasing its potential for advancing the field of NFR analysis and classification.

Abstract:This paper formulates the service-oriented requirements analysis process as a feedback control system, in which the classical “once for all” philosophy is replaced with a continuous negotiation and adaptation process. Based on existing requirements model and new service request, the proposed service requirements elicitation framework ASREF aims to achieve an optimal service supply and demand relationship. Current control variable is the similarity of the service requirements model and the service capability model. Major contributions include: a dynamic questionnaires system for service requirements elicitation, the construction process of goal-oriented service models based on user’s answers to the elicitation questions and the dual feedback control mechanism to service requestor and provider. A virtual travel agency example is used to illustrate the proposed ideas.

Abstract:Extracting pertinent and useful information from customers has long plagued the process of requirements elicitation. This paper presents a new approach to support the elicitation process. This approach combines various techniques for requirements elicitation which include model-based concept acquisition, goal-driven structured interview and concept reuse. Compared with the available approaches for requirements elicitation, the most significant feature of our approach is that it supports both the automation of interaction with customers by using domain terminology, not software terminology and the automated construction of application requirements models using model-based concept elicitation and concept reuse. The capacity of this approach comes from its rich knowledge which is clustered into several abstract levels.

Abstract:Software requirements, especially non-functional requirements, are considered as vital prerequisites for producing software of high quality. As widely accepted, non-functional goal modeling like the NFR Framework usually employs tree modeling style, and presents an interactive process for the analysis of nonfunctional requirements. However, there still exist some problems during the identification of satisficing status. This paper based on the popular NFR goal model reasoning manners, clearly distinguishes the closed world assumption and the open world assumption, and proposes an automatic reasoning mechanism for NFR goal models in order to identify the satisficing statuses of the goal tree roots according to leaves' contributions. Under a specific assumption, goals' satisficing statuses will be transformed to affect satisficing statuses of their parents. Then parents'satisficing statuses will be inferred according to the reasoning rules derived from different decomposition relationships. By alternately adopting these two steps, goal tree root's satisficingstatus can be identified layer by layer. An illustrative example is used to show how our proposed formal approach works.

Abstract:As Artificial Intelligence makes astonishing progress, various AI-embedded applications are being built to unleash their potential. However, all technologies come with their inherent limitations in dealing with unanticipated situations, making it difficult to assure the satisfaction of critical qualities at runtime. This is partly due to the challenge of specifying requirements for quality-critical AI-based components. We argue that for a deployed AI model whose accuracy cannot be validated at runtime, an accuracy-centric specification method is not good enough to support AI application engineering practice. To address this fundamental issue, requirements engineering techniques can help, especially an NFRs-based approach has been proposed for mitigating the impacts of two types of errors caused by uncertainties, so that critical qualities can be assured in the specification of AI-based components. We have implemented our strategy by a combined use of requirements analysis techniques, including modelling goals as in goal-oriented RE and modelling of environment and problems as in problem-oriented RE. We have showcased its application on a Facial Recognition Payment (FRP) system. This work could help create a runtime engineering shield for AI-based components and move forward its application in quality essential scenarios.

Abstract:Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are often regarded as the key success factor in building high quality software. However, most of the requirements elicitation methods are centered on discovering functional requirements only. This paper presents a novel NFRs elicitation approach aiming at empowering requirements analysts with a knowledge repository that aids to the process of capturing precise NFRs during elicitation interviews. The knowledge repository is composed of two layers: the upper layer of feature models and the lower layer of the QoS ontology. The case study of the stock trading domain illustrates the relationships and cooperations of the two layers.

Abstract:Reasoning is critical for non-functional requirements (NFRs) analysis and verification. Furthermore, it can provide rationale about implementation strategies for NFRs. The existing tools can execute an interactive reasoning process which sometimes needs extra information from stakeholders. We build a tool called rΣ for reasoning on NFR models especially when extra information is unavailable or forbidden, like at the model verification stage. This tool employs the formula style model as the input, automatically promotes the reasoning process till the root node, and returns all the satisficing statuses and the complete rationale as the output. We have applied rΣ into the real practice and to evaluate its efficiency.

Abstract:Analyzing non-functional requirements (NFRs) and integrating their solutions into the design model is an important part of enforcing NFRs in the software development process. It is challenging to do this not only because the variety of basic non-functional requirement concepts and their corresponding solutions, but also the gap between the stage of requirement analysis and software design. In this paper, we propose a pattern-based approach to design NFRs, and integrate the design result into existing functional UML models. NFR-specific patterns which denote the general design of the NFR solutions are proposed to reuse the design knowledge, and aspect are automatically generated to integrate them into the existing functional model. Advantages of this approach include, filling the gap between NFRs analysis and implementation, reusing the experience of NFR design by patterns. Finally, we could obtain a more comprehensive design model considering both the functional requirements and non-functional requirements.

Abstract:Knowledge engineering is the process of creating and maintaining knowledge-producing systems. Throughout the history of computer science and AI, knowledge engineering workflows have been widely used because high-quality knowledge is assumed to be crucial for reliable intelligent agents. However, the landscape of knowledge engineering has changed, presenting four challenges: unaddressed stakeholder requirements, mismatched technologies, adoption barriers for new organizations, and misalignment with software engineering practices. In this paper, we propose to address these challenges by developing a reference architecture using a mainstream software methodology. By studying the requirements of different stakeholders and eras, we identify 23 essential quality attributes for evaluating reference architectures. We assess three candidate architectures from recent literature based on these attributes. Finally, we discuss the next steps towards a comprehensive reference architecture, including prioritizing quality attributes, integrating components with complementary strengths, and supporting missing socio-technical requirements. As this endeavor requires a collaborative effort, we invite all knowledge engineering researchers and practitioners to join us.

Abstract:Natural Language Processing (NLP) aims to study various theories and methods that enable effective communication between humans and computers in natural language. One specific technique, known as Keyphrase Extraction (KPE), has achieved significant success in recent years through pre-trained Language Models (LM), particularly BERT and ELMo. Currently, researchers have presented NLP4RE at Requirements Engineering (RE) conferences, contemplating how to leverage the cutting-edge advancements in NLP to achieve the integration of closely related research domains. In the practice of requirements engineering, it is not always assumed that the initial requirements description is complete, which can lead to requirements missing or changes. To address this issue, this paper proposes an unsupervised keyword extraction modeling method. Specifically, using the problem frames model as a case study, this method is integrated into the team's development of an iOS-based Problem Frames (PF) modeling tool in the form of an assisting dropdown list. It is linked with external knowledge bases to predict new keywords. We compare five unsupervised keyword extraction techniques with different principles and evaluate them using samples from the requirements engineering domain. In addition, an eye movement experiment is conducted to further assess the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper aims to review the research results from the past three years from the RE group at the school of software, Tsinghua University. Major threads of work include: (1) study the common body of knowledge on requirements modelling, and integrate i* with other requirements languages, such as problem frames, UCM and UML; (2) work on a service capability and requirements modelling ontology – SRMO, based on goal and agent-oriented concepts from i*; (3) build a double feedback loop control framework (ASREF) to achieve optimal service demand supply relationship based on service models. Abstract:As software systems increasingly interact with humans in application domains such as transportation and healthcare, they raise concerns related to the social, legal, ethical, empathetic, and cultural (SLEEC) norms and values of their stakeholders. Normative non-functional requirements (N-NFRs) are used to capture these concerns by setting SLEEC-relevant boundaries for system behavior. Since N-NFRs need to be specified by multiple stakeholders with widely different, non-technical expertise (ethicists, lawyers, regulators, end users, etc.), N-NFR elicitation is very challenging. To address this challenge, we introduce N-Check, a novel tool-supported formal approach to N-NFR analysis and debugging. N-Check employs satisfiability checking to identify a broad spectrum of N-NFR well-formedness issues (WFI), such as conflicts, redundancy, restrictiveness, insufficiency, yielding diagnostics which pinpoint their causes in a user-friendly way that enables non-technical stakeholders to understand and fix them. We show the effectiveness and usability of our approach through nine case studies in which teams of ethicists, lawyers, philosophers, psychologists, safety analysts, and engineers used N-Check to analyse and debug 233 N-NFRs comprising 62 issues for the software underpinning the operation of systems ranging from assistive-care robots and tree-disease detection drones to manufacturing collaborative robots.

Abstract:This paper presents a methodology that provides decision support for the iterative development of requirements engineering (RE) processes, which is a significant step towards bridging the gap between RE theory and practice. The methodology presented is based on a multi-criteria decision making model [18] and an N-dimensional process development methodology [1] in order to provide support for requirements engineers to tailor/define RE process models and to select the most appropriate RE techniques for a specific project. Currently available RE models and techniques are stored in a RE Process Knowledge Base (REPKB) which is the basisfor decision support. The general theory behind this methodology is described and an algorithm for the implementation of our decision support is discussed in the paper. Preliminary results suggest that the framework makes a useful contribution to requirements engineering by helping requirements engineers to develop better RE processes.

Abstract:Domain analysis in software product line (SPL) development provides a basis for core assets design and implementation by a systematic and comprehensive commonality/variability analysis. In feature-oriented SPL methods, products of the domain analysis are domain feature models and corresponding feature decision models to facilitate application-oriented customization. As in requirement analysis for a single system, the domain analysis in the SPL development should con- sider both functional and nonfunctional domain requirements. However, the nonfunctional requirements (NFRs) are often neglected in the existing domain analysis methods. In this paper, we propose a context-based method of the NFR analysis for the SPL development. In the method, NFRs are materialized by connecting nonfunctional goals with real-world context, thus NFR elicitation and variability analysis can be performed by context analysis for the whole domain with the assistance of NFR templates and NFR graphs. After the variability analysis, our method integrates both functional and nonfunctional perspectives by incorporating the nonfunctional goals and operationalizations into an initial functional feature model. NFR-related constraints are also elicited and integrated. Finally, a decision model with both functional and nonfunctional perspectives is constructed to facilitate application-oriented feature model customization. A computer-aided grading system (CAGS) product line is employed to demonstrate the method throughout the paper.
Automated construction of reference model for software remodularization through software evolution

Abstract:Automated construction of reference model (ACRM) automatically constructs reference models by assigning weights to classes for various software projects using the metadata of all software versions and historical maintenance records. ACRM can aid developers in selecting appropriate software clustering techniques in a more structured and rigorous manner by leveraging generated reference models. The undocumented evolution of a software project and its underlying architecture underscores the need to recover the architecture from the software's implementation‐level artifacts. Despite the existence of various software remodularization techniques, they often suffer from inaccuracies, and evaluating their effectiveness is challenging due to the absence of accurate "ground‐truth" architectures or reference models. Prior studies on reference model construction are time‐consuming and labor‐intensive as it heavily relies on manual analysis by domain experts. Besides, other existing approaches that directly utilize the directory or package structure of the latest version can be unreliable, lacking in‐depth analysis of the employed software structure. To address the above limitations, in this paper, we propose Automated Construction of Reference Model (ACRM), an approach for automatically constructing reference models by assigning weights to classes for various software projects using the metadata of all software versions and historical maintenance records. We evaluate ACRM through both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The experiment results provide quantitative validation and show that the generated reference models are reasonable, as confirmed by the relationship between proposed reference models and architectural smells or bugs. Furthermore, we conduct a survey among the practitioners from industry, to gain insights from practitioners' practices and further validate the generated reference models. The survey shows that, on average, 87% of the participants agree with the reference models generated by ACRM. Moreover, we propose an improved metric, wc2c, which analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of different types of software clustering techniques using the proposed reference models of the given software. Finally, we discuss the potential benefits of using ACRM in analyzed projects, particularly in terms of improving software quality, reducing maintenance costs, and enhancing developer productivity.

Abstract:Dynamic reconfiguration is the process of making changes to software at run-time. The motivation for this is typically to facilitate adaptive systems which change their behavior in response to changes in their operating environment or to allow systems with a requirement for continuous service to evolve uninterrupted. To enable development of reconfigurable applications, we have developed OpenRec, a framework which comprises a reflective component model plus an open and extensible reconfiguration management infrastructure. Recently we have extended OpenRec to verify whether an intended (re)configuration would result in an application's structural constraints being satisfied. Consequently OpenRec can automatically veto proposed changes that would violate configuration constraints. This functionality has been realized by integrating OpenRec with the ALLOY Analyzer tool via a service-oriented architecture. ALLOY is a formal modelling notation which can be used to specify systems and associated constraints. In this paper, we present an overview of the OpenRec framework. In addition, we describe the application of ALLOY to modelling re-configurable component based systems and highlight some interesting experiences with integrating OpenRec and the ALLOY Analyzer

Abstract:The use of requirements as a tool to help users identify, review, and organize the requirements of software systems is growing in popularity in the research community. On the other hand, the study offered a strategy for guiding stakeholders, both computer and non-computer people, through the process of eliciting requirements in some domains. The goal was to provide knowledge on requirement elicitation for specific domains that are more accessible. To prepare and use requirement patterns, a tool that aids in the identification of thorough and consistent requirements was developed. You may be able to find them more quickly with this tool if you make use of the reusability attribute and the ability to create new patterns. The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive tool that addresses the "functional, non-functional requirements, and business rules" expressed in natural language with the domain specification. These are the fundamental aspects of the requirements. As it is used to develop projects with a similar scope and the potential to include new requirements and features, the tool has demonstrated its effectiveness in identifying key system requirements in terms of time spent and accuracy. The tool also provides the option of creating a template that combines the new properties with the reusable ones. Using the suggested tool, the case study is given.
