Abstract:It's easy to build a centralized VOD server in a LAN, which is easy to manage but is difficult to extend. But in the WAN, VOD is not yet widely implemented. The biggest obstacle is the lack of server bandwidth that can handle the large amounts of video data. A distributed VOD server is brought forward that is easy to extend so as to serve more concurrent customers and provide more programs, and the expansibility in these aspects is discussed: the architecture, communication based on CORBA, load balance and storage tech- nology. Experiments show that the VOD server is suitable for use both in LAN and WAN.

Abstract:Based on Web Services and grid technology, a structure of virtual organization (VO) in favor of co-operative services was studied, and an entity model of members of Grid-based VO and a really dynamic model of VO applicable to Grid Technology-an abstract model of VO holding with wide world/region scheduling service center was constructed. According to this model, a practical network model of VO structure based on Open Grid Service Architecture (OGSA) was constructed finally, a key technology of VO co-operative service was brought forward and solved, and rules of task scheduling satisfied with both network services required and the least service cost was brought forward.

Abstract:With the development and popularization of virtual reality (VR) technology, it has been widely used in the field of online experimental education. Due to the large volume of VR digital assets for online experimental education, the existing VR digital asset management systems have problems such as low bandwidth utilization and high latency. In this research, in order to alleviate these problems, we designed a novel VR digital asset distributed management system, which is composed of a micro-service module, a distributed storage sub-module, a distributed retrieval module and a user module. The system has the ability to integrate centralized cloud storage and distributed storage at the same time, has secondary development interfaces, has multiple customer service terminals, supports Operation Support Systems, InterPlanetary File System and other storage modes, and has developed a complete set of Restful API interfaces to facilitate upper-level application calls. Finally, experiments demonstrate that the system has the characteristics of decentralization, high bandwidth utilization and low latency.

Abstract:Inter-organization collaboration is recently acknowledged as an important vision of the grid research, however there are not many well implemented system and not many applications that are in large-scale real use either. This paper present a VO(Virtual Organization) Ontology Model Framework that simplifies the Inter-organization collaboration of the future grids. Thanks to the semantic technology, we can develop semantic based model framework to implement interoperability even in heterogeneous environments. The framework, consisted of a bunch of ontologies, definitely defines and describes which attributes of the VOs should define. We define and implement the semantic model of Virtual Organizations and Grid Resources and introduce the basic concepts and mechanisms to represent them and apply them to the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CATCM). The prototype presented in this paper is also applicable to other VO application projects.

Abstract:To get the distributed and autonomous equipments in equipment grid(EG) work collaboratively to serve users as a "supper virtual equip", "dynamic service composition (DSC)", a five-layered implemental framework is put forward. Via solving the sub- problems in each layer, simple services from local equipments are combined into complex ones to realize the collaborative sharing. An Effective Communication Architecture for Collaborative Virtual Systems

Abstract:In collaborative virtual environment (CVE) systems, participants can freely join and share a virtual environment and do some collaborative works synchronously. And network communication architecture is very important for CVE systems to realize scalability, minimized delay and reliability. In this paper, the communication of CVE systems is categorized in three types: state update, command and event. Furthermore, this paper introduces the collaboration requests and interactive stream in CVE systems. Based on these introductions, a communication architecture for collaborative virtual environment systems is described. This architecture uses updatable queue abstraction in application layer to do message obsolescence and uses interactive stream transport protocol in transport layer to achieve efficient transmission of messages among a large number of participants.
HIVE: a Highly Scalable Framework for DVE

Abstract:With the increasing requirements for distributed virtual environment (DVE): supporting larger number of participants and providing more smooth roaming and interactions, scalability is becoming a key issue. In this paper, we explore the scalability of participants and the scalability of servers, and mainly focus on three aspects: system architecture, communication model and interest mechanism. We present our middleware platform, HIVE, providing a variety of services such as data distribution, communication, event notification, etc. To achieve the reusability and interoperability of DVE applications, the interface specification of high level architecture (HLA) is employed as the reference. HIVE also contains the back-ends, which the middleware services depend upon. On HIVE, users can develop scalable DVE applications easily and quickly, concentrating on not the detail of distribution but the application logic. Finally an experimental demo on HIVE is given.

Abstract:Complex distributed systems such as CSCW or VE need to integrate the distributed and heterogeneous applications and resources that are dispersive among numbers of departments. CORBA and Agent based architecture 'Federated Services' is designed to meet this requirement. It divides the whole working environment into several groups that are intelligent and autonomous. CORBA is used to combine the services inside the group, so the architecture supports distributed and heterogeneous services; Agent assisted by XML is used to manage the group and group's communication, so the group is autonomous, intelligent and the communication is robust, secure. This architecture is a perfect way to build complex distributed computing systems like CSCW or VE.

Abstract:We propose a formal framework that supports a model of agent-based Virtual Organisations (VOs) for service grids and provides an associated operational model for the creation of VOs. The framework is intended to be used for describing different service grid applications based on multiple agents and, as a result, it abstracts away from any realisation choices of the service grid application, the agents involved to support the applications and their interactions. Within the proposed framework VOs are seen as emerging from societies of agents, where agents are abstractly characterised by goals and roles they can play within VOs. In turn, VOs are abstractly characterised by the agents participating in them with specific roles, as well as the workflow of services and corresponding contracts suitable for achieving the goals of the participating agents. We illustrate the proposed framework with an earth observation scenario.

Abstract:Most P2P Video-On-Demand (VOD) schemes mainly focus more on mending service architectures and optimizing overlays but do not carefully consider the user behavior and the benefit of prefetching strategies. As a result, they cannot better support VCR-oriented services in terms of substantive asynchronous clients, and free VCR controls for P2P VODs. In this paper, we propose VOVO, VCR-oriented VOD for large-scale P2P networks. By mining associations inside a video, the segments requested in VCR interactivities are accurately predicted based on the information collected through gossips. Together with a hybrid caching strategy, a collaborative prefetching scheme is proposed to optimize resource distribution among neighboring peers. We evaluate VOVO through extensive experiments. Results show that VOVO is scalable and effective, providing short startup latencies and good performance in VCR interactivities.

Abstract:Employing IT as the key enable technology virtual organization (VO) is primarily characterized as being a network of independent, geographically dispersed organisations (member organization) providing electronic services via Internet. To align these services effectively, one of the main challenges is to model cooperation in VO and provide correspondent management tools. Here we present a VOC (VO Structure-Organization Resource-Character) approach to model and run VO. VOC consists of three models. VO Structure model describes how VO functions in terms of VO Role (VR), Protocol; Organization Resource model describes potential service providers (potential member organization) capable participate VO. Character Model describes dynamic binding relationship between VO role and member organization. Following the VOC model, a platform supporting the design, administration, and running of VOC is given.

Abstract:This paper describes a service oriented programming platform for Internet-based Virtual Computing Environment (iVCE), which is targetted for enabling collaboration among autonomous entities over Internet. This platform provides mechanisms and facilities to help iVCE programmers write and run applications in a relatively stable and trusted environment. In this platform, autonomous entities first voluntarily join in virtual community attracted by common interests. Then entities will selectively play specific roles predefined in collaboration process which is specified in a declarative language named APEL. Capability requirements and environment specifications are also provided to enable negotiation and adaptation while process is executed. All business interfaces and negotiation interfaces are published using standard Web Services to maximize reuse and interoperation.

Abstract:An experimental multi-user distributed virtual environment MUDVE is introduced. After analyzing pros and cons of peer-to-peer topology and client-server topology, a new hybrid communication topology is presented, which has the characteristics of low latency and good scalability. The system functions, such as object-oriented data management, dynamic load balancing and user management are discussed. The system also provides functions of information service and resource discovery, which are deficient in the existing DVE systems. Finally the experiment platform is described and the result is shown in grabbed images.

Abstract:Based on the GRID technologies, the authors suggest an implementation framework of a prospective grid VOD system which includes several hybrid clusters widely distributed within a metropolis. The hardware topology, the software structure and interactions among the main components of the system are described. A distributed adapting scheduler for the incoming VOD tasks is also suggested and simulated. The scheduler is divided into two parts, i.e.,a global part which distribute the tasks among individual clusters and a local part which works within a single cluster. The global part is designed based on multi-objective programming. Simulation shows that the scheduler works well even the system load increases by a big margin.

Abstract:Multi-channel display system is more suitable for collaboration applications than common desktop PC. In tradition, such multi-channel displays are used by a group of collocated users. In this paper, we propose one remote interaction system to allow a group of users to simultaneously access the multi-channel display on common PCs. Our system can achieve real time performance under mainstream network environment, which is difficult for the previous work even under the network testbed of high bandwidth. In the system, the multi-channel video generated on the server side is captured by synchronizing a group of capturing processes. For achieving real time performance, one hierarchical subtile-based approach is designed to represent and compress the multi-channel video using MPEG2. The system selectively streams the bitstream containing the region of visible pixels to the corresponding client. For controlling the multichannel application on client side, we refactor the architecture of VNC software, and integrate the enhanced version into our system. Experimental results show that our system achieves real time performance when simultaneously serving group users.

Abstract:Providing large-scale on-demand video service is a challenging problem. Many schemes, such as hatching, chaining, patching, periodic broadcast and piggybacking, Could save the media server's capacity by taking the advantages of IP multicast. However, these approaches are difficult in deployment. Recent research shows that end system multicast is a feasible way to providing large-scale VoD services. In this paper, we propose a novel service model, which is called Advanced Chaining VoD (ACVoD) system, based oil peer-to-peer technology in the scope of large-scale broadband residential access network. The ACVoD make use of the resources of idle users and make the video chain more stable. Simulation results show that our approach can support true VoD service well in a scalable way.

Abstract:Distributed simulation and parallel rendering based on PC cluster have seen great success in recent years. To improve the overall performance, there is a trend to integrate modeling, simulation and visualization into a common distributed environment. In this paper, we propose a unified framework of building high performance distributed virtual reality (DVR) applications. The core components of this framework include the High Level Architecture (HLA), scene graphs and parallel rendering. The HLA supports interactive distributed simulation. Scene graphs are efficient to organize and manipulate scene data. And parallel rendering provides powerful rendering ability. This paper presents the in-depth architectural analysis of each components and derives a design that integrates them into a unified framework. Two DVR applications, including a remote navigation of massive virtual scenes and a multi-player video game, have been developed to evaluate the framework performance.

Abstract:This document describes SVDC, a highly-scalable and low-overhead virtualization architecture designed for large layer-2 data center networks. By leveraging the emerging software defined network framework, SVDC decouples the global identifier of a virtual network from the identifier carried in the packet header. Hence, SVDC can scale to a large scale of virtual networks with a very short tag in the packet header, which is never achieved by previous network virtualization solutions. SVDC enhances MAC-in-MAC encapsulation in a way that packets with overlapped MAC addresses are correctly forwarded even without in-packet global identifiers to differentiate the virtual networks they belong to. Besides, scalable and efficient layer-2 multicast and broadcast within virtual networks are also supported in SVDC. This document also introduces a basic framework to illustrate SVDC deployment.
