Abstract:Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been around for thousands of years and it's a significant part of Chinese cultural heritage. The theoretical framework of TCM is unique and with rich of content, which contains the complex relationships between disease and medicine. Research on question-answering (QA) over TCM is significant for Chinese NLP and representative, because the resources of TCM are mostly Chinese-based. In this paper we present a QA system over TCM, which transforms user supplied questions into conjunctive query sentences (i.e. SQL) and retrieves the answer from both the built-up dataset and online encyclopedia. The contribution of this paper is threefold: Firstly, we introduce a novel approach for word segmentation over Chinese questions. We employ a TF-IDF model on the dataset to generate domain-specific dictionary with weight factor and tags, which are computed to select the best result of segmentation. Secondly, we present a novel method for constructing queries to retrieve answers. We compute the entity-attribute distance over a set of tagged words to construct incomplete ontology instances, which are used as the intermediary to generate queries. Lastly, we propose a method to integrate web data extraction with question answering, which allows us to extract answers from online encyclopedia website (i.e. Wikipedia). The results of our evaluation with 50 benchmark queries demonstrate the value of our approach.

Abstract:With the development of network technology, distance education is becoming increasingly important. Intelligent question answering system is an important part of remote learning system. Currently, there have been a lot of mature English question answering systems. Owing to the Chinese natural language complexity and processing technical limitations, there is still no mature Chinese QA system exploited by now. This paper designs and implements a Chinese intelligent question answering system based on domain ontology and sentence templates according to Chinese characteristics. This system packages question template , semantic template and answer model into a sentence template, adopts automatic word segmentation and sentence templates matching method to understand the users’ questions, and uses domain ontology as knowledge base which provide domain vocabulary for question analysis and knowledge retrieval for answers’ generation. Our system achieves to question with limited natural language, and finally returns to the user a precise and concise answer.

Abstract: The ability of a machine to communicate with humans has long been associated with the general success of AI. This dates back to Alan Turing's epoch-making work in the early 1950s, which proposes that a machine's intelligence can be tested by how well it, the machine, can fool a human into believing that the machine is a human through dialogue conversations. Many systems learn generation rules from a minimal set of authored rules or labels on top of hand-coded rules or templates, and thus are both expensive and difficult to extend to open-domain scenarios. Recently, the emergence of neural network models the potential to solve many of the problems in dialogue learning that earlier systems cannot tackle: the end-to-end neural frameworks offer the promise of scalability and language-independence, together with the ability to track the dialogue state and then mapping between states and dialogue actions in a way not possible with conventional systems. On the other hand, neural systems bring about new challenges: they tend to output dull and generic responses; they lack a consistent or a coherent persona; they are usually optimized through single-turn conversations and are incapable of handling the long-term success of a conversation; and they are not able to take the advantage of the interactions with humans. This dissertation attempts to tackle these challenges: Contributions are two-fold: (1) we address new challenges presented by neural network models in open-domain dialogue generation systems; (2) we develop interactive question-answering dialogue systems by (a) giving the agent the ability to ask questions and (b) training a conversation agent through interactions with humans in an online fashion, where a bot improves through communicating with humans and learning from the mistakes that it makes.

Research on question-answering (QA) over TCM is significant for Chinese NLP and representative, because the resources of TCM are mostly Chinese-based. The general strategies for QA are pipeline, includes Natural Language Processing (NLP) for original questions and structural query process. However, noises are easily introduced and information contained in the original questions may loss during these two separate procedures. In this paper we present a novel joint model for QA over TCM, which unites these two procedures into a uniform framework, together with Wikipedia alignment. The results of our evaluation with 100 benchmark queries demonstrate the value of our approach.

Abstract:We built a domain-specific Chinese interactive Question Answering (QA) system which has already been available as a public service via phone text messaging. The system utilizes Topic Forest [1] as the dialog management model to be capable of keeping track of users' interests. The Question Answering component is a hybrid approach which consists of both a community Question Answering engine [2] and a new knowledge-based QA engine. In the new QA engine, we constructed a semantic pattern matching model to automatically translate question topics and targets generated by the natural language understanding unit to SPARQL [3] queries, which eventually build the final answer. Through experimental data collected from real user survey and case study, our system shows promising results with the comparison over the practical QA system Siri as the industrial standard in terms of both accuracy and user satisfaction rates.

Abstract:Question-answering (QA) system provides a friendly way for human-computer interaction, which has become an important research direction of smart learning. It provides an easy and individual way for the learner to acquire knowledge. This paper focuses on K-12 education and constructs a hybrid automatic question-answering system which integrates Knowledge Based Question Answering (KB-QA) and Information Retrieval-based Question Answering (IR-QA). The system is built based on Chinese textbooks and a Chinese K-12 knowledge graph (edukg.org). Our QA system covers 9 subjects in K-12 education field, including mathematics, Chinese, geography, history, etc. We evaluate our system on more than 9,000 questions, and achieve average accuracy over 70%. The system could provide effective assistance for teachers’ teaching and students’ learning.

Abstract:Interactive Question Answering (QA) system is capable of answering users' questions with managing/understanding the dialogs between human and computer. With the increasing amount of online information, it is highly needed to answer users' concerns on a specific domain such as health-related questions. In this paper, we proposed a general framework for domain-specific interactive question answering systems which takes advance of domain knowledge bases. First, a semantic parser is generated to parse users' questions to the corresponding logical forms on basis of the knowledge base structure. Second, the logical forms are translated into query language to further harvest answers from the knowledge base. Moreover, our framework is featured with automatic dialog strategy development which relies on manual intervention in traditional interactive QA systems. For evaluation purpose, we applied our framework to a Chinese interactive QA system development, and used a health-related knowledge base as domain scenario. It shows promising results in parsing complex questions and holding long history dialog.
CPEQA: A Large Language Model Based Knowledge Base Retrieval System for Chinese Confidentiality Knowledge Question Answering

Abstract:Large language models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable performance on various natural language processing (NLP) tasks, particularly in the construction of the intelligent question-answering system. These systems, especially in specialized fields, usually rely on NLP through the retrieval of corpus and answering databases to efficiently provide accurate and concise answers. This paper focuses on the national confidentiality publicity and education field, aiming to address the dilemma of inaccurate knowledge retrieval in this field. Therefore, we design an intelligent confidentiality question-answering system CPEQA by comprehensively utilizing the LLMs platform and information retrieval technique. CPEQA is capable of providing professional answers to questions about Chinese confidentiality publicity and education raised by users. Additionally, we also integrate the conventional database retrieval technique and LLMs into the database query construction, enabling CPEQA to perform real-time queries and data analysis for both single-table and multi-table querying tasks. Through extensive experiments with generated query sentences, we show both methodological comparisons and empirical evaluations of CPEQA's performance. Experimental results indicate that CPEQA has achieved competitive results on answering precision, recall rate and other metrics. Finally, we explore the challenges of the CPEQA system associated with these techniques and outline potential avenues for future research in this emerging field.

Abstract:With the development of artificial intelligence, the emergence of the QA system meets the search needs of people in the mass information age. The traditional question-answering system mostly matches the questions with fixed templates, and the dataset of questions and answers often rely on human-designed features, which is time-consuming and with low accuracy. To address this dilemma, the current prevailing technology of Knowledge Graph provides a new way, helping to build a domain-specific intelligent question answering system. In this paper, we combine the Knowledge Graph with the question and answer system to analyze the relationship of diseases, prescriptions, and Chinese herbal medicines, and finally implement a smart question answering system for the Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Abstract:The invention discloses a Chinese natural language interrogative sentence semantization knowledge base automatic question-answering method. The method includes the following steps that Chinese natural language processing is performed on a fact type question input by a user, word segmentation, part-of-speech tagging and identification and expanding of a named entity are achieved, and a semantic dependency tree is generated; a generalization template and a semantic analysis technology are used for acquiring time, space, a fact entity, a fact object and the like in an interrogative sentence, then semantic processing is performed, composition element attributes relevant to all events in the interrogative sentence and values of the attributes are extracted, a plurality of 'attribute-value' pairs are generated, to-be-answered elements are substituted by interrogatives, and a complex fact triple set is formed; after a triple where a to-be-answered part is located is combined with other relevant fact triple sets to form knowledge base query with conditional constraints, and query matching based on similarity calculation is performed in a knowledge base, a result is extracted from the knowledge base, and a final answer is obtained. Fast and accurate query response to the knowledge base is achieved.

Abstract:After a long period of research in factoid QA, such kind of questions has already been solved quite well. However, real users always concern on some more complicated questions such as "Why XXXX?" or "How XXXX?". These questions are difficult to retrieve answers directly from internet, but the community question answering services provide good resources to solve these questions. As cQA portals like Yahoo! Answers and Baidu Zhidao have attracted over hundreds of millions of questions, these questions can be treated as users' query log, and can help the QA systems understand the user's questions better. Common approaches focus on using information retrieval techniques in order to provide a ranked list of questions based on their similarity to the query. Due to the high variance of quality of questions and answers, users have to spend lots of time on finding the truly best answers from retrieved results. In this paper, we develop an answer retrieval and summarization system which directly provides an accurate and comprehensive answer summary besides a list of similar questions to user's query. To fully explore the information of questions and answers posted in the cQA, we adopt different strategies according to different situations. By this way, the system could output great answers to users' questions in practice.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a general framework for the interactive question answering system in medical diagnosis, which can interact simply with user to get more refined question descriptions and return answers. The system first gets FAQ pairs from cQA website, and builds the medical ontology with incremental methods. Then it analyzes the question and enquires user for the lacking information. After getting user's feedbacks, it performs question retrieval and extracts answers. The experiment shows our system has better performance with user's feedbacks. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:Question answering plays a pivotal role in human daily life because it involves our acquisition of knowledge about the world. However, due to the dynamic and ever-changing nature of real-world facts, the answer can be completely different when the time constraint in the question changes. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable intelligence in question answering, while our experiments reveal that the aforementioned problems still pose a significant challenge to existing LLMs. This can be attributed to the LLMs’ inability to perform rigorous reasoning based on surface-level text semantics. To overcome this limitation, rather than requiring LLMs to directly answer the question, we propose a novel approach where we reframe the Q uestion A nswering task a s P rogramming ( QAaP ). Concretely, by leveraging modern LLMs’ superior capability in understanding both natural language and programming language, we endeavor to harness LLMs to represent diversely expressed text as well-structured code and select the best matching answer from multiple candidates through programming. We evaluate our QAaP framework on several time-sensitive question answering datasets and achieve decent improvement, up to 14.5% over strong baselines.

A renewed interest in question-answering started in 1999 with a series of NIST-sponsored TREC Question-Answering (QA) Tracks, large-scale evaluations of domainindependent question-answering1 that produced a few high performance question-answering systems capable of answering factoid and list questions[525, 478, 283]. In 2011, IBM’s open-domain question-answering system, Watson [215], beat the two highest ranked Jeopardy! 2 players, marking a significant milestone in the more than 60-year quest to create a viable questionanswering machine.

Abstract:Purpose Question-answering (QA) systems are being increasingly applied in learning contexts. However, the authors' understanding of the relationship between such tools and traditional QA channels remains limited. Focusing on question-answering learning activities, the current research investigates the effect of QA systems on students' learning processes and outcomes, as well as the interplay between two QA channels, that is, QA systems and communication with instructors. Design/methodology/approach The authors designed and implemented a QA system for two university courses, and collected data from questionnaires and system logs that recorded the interaction between students and the system throughout a semester. Findings The results show that using a QA system alone does not improve students' learning processes or outcomes. However, the use of a QA system significantly improves the positive effect of instructor communication. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on learning and education technology, and provides practical guidance on how to incorporate QA tools in learning.

Abstract: For the task of open domain Knowledge Based Question Answering in CCKS2019, we propose a method combining information retrieval and semantic parsing. This multi-module system extracts the topic entity and the most related relation predicate from a question and transforms it into a Sparql query statement. Our method obtained the F1 score of 70.45% on the test data.

Abstract:Knowledge graph-based question answering is an intelligent approach to deducing the answer to a natural language question from structured knowledge graph information. As one of the mainstream knowledge graph-based question answering approaches, information retrieval-based methods infer the correct answer by constructing and ranking candidate paths, which achieve excellent performance in simple questions but struggle to handle complex questions due to rich entity information and diverse relations. In this paper, we construct a joint system with three subsystems based on the information retrieval methods, where candidate paths can be efficiently generated and ranked, and a new text-matching method is introduced to capture the semantic correlation between questions and candidate paths. Results of the experiment conducted on the China Conference on Knowledge Graph and Semantic Computing 2019 Chinese Knowledge Base Question Answering dataset verify the superiority and efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:In this demonstration, we present Deep-gAnswer, a knowledge-based question answering system. gAnswer is based on semantic parsing and heuristic rules for entity recognition, relation recognition, and SPARQL generation. By making use of a pre-trained model, we implement new entity and relation recognition networks. Also, it is found that the traditional method works better when information of entity and relation is correctly given. Therefore, we combine entity and relation recognition networks with the previous SPARQL generation process to get Deep-gAnswer. Experimental results show that Deep-gAnswer outperforms the previous one, especially on Chinese dataset.
