Abstract:A systematic reliability analysis of n-unit warm standby repairable system with k-repair facility is presented in this paper. Traditional approaches are extended under the following assumptions: (1) the working lifetime, the standby lifetime, and the repair time of failed units are represented as exponential distribution; and (2) the repair of failed units are as good as new after repair. In this paper, a general reliability analysis of an n-unit warm standby repairable system with k-repair facility is presented. Based on previous analysis, the steady-state reliability and the average availability of the system are formulated using the Markov process theory and Laplace transform.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a two-unit, non-identical cold standby system under general repair with or without priority. In the prioritized case, one unit in the system is designated to serve as standby only, that is, the standby unit is only utilized when the main unit has failed and is being repaired, whereas in the non-prioritized case, both units serve alternately as standby with each unit being put to standby mode when its repair is complete. The effect of each repair is modelled by a degree θ , 0≤θ≤1 , where θ=0 means full repair (or full replacement) and θ=1 means minimal repair. For these cases, and for arbitrary distributions of the lifetimes and repair times of the units in the system, we obtain the reliability function in the time domain as opposed to the Laplace domain. Our functions utilize results from classical and generalized renewal theory results. We validated our formulas on various in-house standby configurations, as well as standby configurations occurring in coolant systems of nuclear power plants.

Abstract:Standby redundancy has been extensively applied to critical engineering systems to enhance system reliability. Researches on reliability evaluation for standby systems focus more on systems with binary-state elements. However, multi-state elements with different performances have played a significant role in engineering systems. This paper presents an approach for reliability analysis of standby systems composed of multi-state elements with constant state transition rates and absorbing failure states. The approach allows modelling different standby systems beyond cold, warm and hot ones by taking into account differences in possible maintenance of elements in standby and operation modes and dependence of elements' operational behavior on their initial state at the time of activation. An iterative algorithm for reliability evaluation based on element state probabilities is suggested. Illustrating examples of evaluating reliability of different types of homogeneous and heterogeneous standby systems are demonstrated.

Abstract:Redundancy techniques have been extensively utilized to enhance the reliability of engineering systems. There are three different types of standby techniques, cold, hot, and warm. Warm standby is adopted for less energy consumption and shorter leading time compared with hot standby and cold standby, respectively. Besides redundancy, performance sharing is another strategy to enhance system reliability, where the subsystems with sufficient performance can share the surplus performance with other subsystems with deficient performance. This article considers a demand-based warm standby system with a common bus performance-sharing mechanism, where the subsystems can share performance through the common bus and each subsystem can be configured with warm standby components in order to meet its demand. To be more general, the imperfect switching for the activations of warm standby components is also considered. Moreover, the multi-valued decision-diagram technique is developed to analyze the reliability for the proposed model. The proposed technique can handle systems whose time-to-failure distributions can follow arbitrary distributions in addition to the common utilized exponential distributions. Numerical studies are provided to validate the proposed model and technique.

Abstract:The paper presents an approach for evaluating reliability of standby systems composed of multi-state elements with constant state transition rates. Any standby elements can be repaired, whereas no repairs are possible in operation. When an operating element fails the standby element with the best technical state is activated. Time-to-failure distributions of operating elements depend on their states at the time of activation. An iterative algorithm for reliability evaluation based on element state probabilities is suggested. An example of using the algorithm for evaluating reliability of standby system is presented.

Abstract:Warm standby redundancy is a fault-tolerant technique balancing the low economical efficiency of hot standby and the long recovery time of cold standby. In this paper, motivated by practical engineering systems, a general demand-based warm standby system (DB-WSS) considering component degradation process is studied. A series of intermediate states exists between perfect functionality and complete failure because of degradation processes. A lot of existing analytical reliability assessment techniques are focused on conventional binary-state models or exponential state transition distributions for a system or its components. In this paper, a novel reliability evaluation approach based on the multistate decision diagram for DB-WSS is proposed. The proposed technique can handle arbitrary distributions of degradation processes for multistate components or systems. Moreover, considering the imperfect switch of the warm standby component, the start failure probability is taken into account in the warm standby system. Numerical studies are given to illustrate the proposed approach.

Abstract:Conventionally, for reliability studies in power systems, a constant failure rate is assumed for power generation units. If these units consist of power electronic converters, this assumption might not be valid due to the aging of power components, and it will lead to an unrealistic prediction of reliability. On the other hand, at the system-level, commonly-used reliability calculation tools, such as Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) and Continuous Markov Process (CMP), are either time-consuming or not possible to be applied to the systems with non-constant failure rates. Therefore, in this paper, a methodology is proposed to calculate system-level reliability for a Power-Electronic-based Power System (PEPS), consisting of several converters with non-constant failure rates. By doing so, not only is the effect of mission profiles integrated into the system-level reliability model, but also the wear-out failures and corrective maintenance are considered. Finally, for a case study PEPS, the system-level indices are calculated using the proposed method. It is shown that assuming constant failure rates for PEPS units is inaccurate and misleading. Moreover, the impacts of various factors, e.g., mission profile, repair rate, topology, and rating of converters, on the system-level reliability are investigated and analyzed.

Abstract:In this paper we model and analyze non-repairable 1-out-of- N : G warm standby systems subject to periodic backups and dynamic reworking. Particularly, in such systems, a standby element must redo some portion of already performed work by the failed online element before taking over the mission task, which makes the actual mission time dynamic. The considered systems are widely used in applications such as computing and manufacturing, but have not been well studied in reliability theory. In this work, we make new contributions by suggesting a numerical algorithm to evaluate the reliability of the considered warm standby systems. It is revealed that these systems are non-coherent, where the system reliability has non-monotonic dependence on the reliability of individual elements. Numerical examples further show that the non-coherency phenomenon is more distinguished for elements initiated earlier than those initiated later in the warm standby list. Example results also imply that placing highly unreliable elements at the end of the warm standby waiting list, or even removing them from the system planning, can enhance the reliability of a warm standby system subject to reworking. Findings from this work can guide the reliability design of the considered warm standby systems in practice.

Abstract:In the real life, there exists limited information or uncertainty in knowledge about failure and repair rates which follow one of the standard distributions as exponential distribution and Weibull distribution with some parameters. We suppose that these parameters are fuzzy which allow one to specify a system design for a "worst-case scenario." In this paper, the fuzzy availability and the fuzzy reliability of a redundant repairable parallel k-out-of-n warm standby system with common-cause failure are evaluated. We assume that the failure time of each operating unit or warm standby unit follows Weibull distribution with two fuzzy parameters and the repair time of any failed unit follows exponential distribution with one fuzzy parameter. Each fuzzy parameter is represented by triangular membership function estimated from statistical data taken from random samples of each unit. Also, we give a numerical example for a fuzzy repairable parallel 3-out-of-5 warm standby system with two active and three warm standby units to get analytically and represent graphically the fuzzy availability and reliability function of this fuzzy system.

Abstract:In this study, we conduct a reliability characterisation study of cold standby systems. Utilising synthetic rectangular formulas and cold preparedness equivalent models for cold standby systems, we analyse the lifetimes of several typical configurations, including series, parallel, and k/n:m voting systems. This study proposes system equivalent models for various types of cold standby systems, all composed of components that follow the same exponential distribution. We use the equivalent model to determine the optimal timing for the use of cold spares and derive the reliability function and residual lifetime function for each type of system. To demonstrate the validity of our model, the Monte Carlo simulation is strategically designed based on the system failure rate function. The experimental results are then compared with those obtained from the numerical model, highlighting that the numerical method incurs a lower time cost.

Abstract:Existing analytical methods for analyzing warm standby systems are mainly Markov-based and inclusion-exclusion-based approaches. However, both approaches have their own shortcomings. As to Markov-based methods, they often confront the problem of state space explosion and require exponential components time-to-failure distributions. For the inclusion-exclusion-based approaches, the multi-integration formulas developed for quantifying minimal cut sequences generated from warm spare gate system base on exponential components time-to-failure distribution as well. In this paper, new sequential multi-integration formulas are proposed for quantifying warm spare systems, which are applicable for system having components with arbitrary time-to-failure distributions. The rigorous mathematical derivations are presented thoroughly. For a validation purpose, an illustrative example is analyzed. The results indicate that our proposed method is reasonable.

Abstract:This paper presents a reliability analysis method on repairable system with standby structure based on goal oriented (GO) methodology. Firstly, a new combination of GO operator, which is composed of a new logical GO operator named Type 18A operator and a new auxiliary GO operator named Type 20 operator, is created to represent standby mode. The availability formula of standby equipment with translation exception is deduced based on Markov process theory. Then, the application method of combination of GO operator for standby mode and the analysis process of repairable system with standby structure based on GO method are proposed. Thirdly, this new combination of GO operator is applied in availability analysis of the hydraulic oil supply system of power‐shift steering transmission. Finally, the results obtained by the new GO method are compared with the results of fault tree analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, GO methods using Type 2 operator and Type 18 operator to represent the standby mode, respectively. And the comparison results show that this new GO method is applicable and reasonable for reliability analysis of repairable system with standby structure. All in all, this paper provides guidance for reliability analysis of repairable systems with standby structure. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:This paper discussed a two-unit cold standby system by considering the concepts of degradation, inspection, preventive maintenance (PM), and priority. The unit works as a reduced capacity after its repair and is called degraded unit. There is a single repairman who visits the system immediately. The repairman inspects the failed degraded unit to see the feasibility of repair. If the repair of the degraded unit is not possible, it is replaced by new unit. PM will provide to the system when both the units are degraded and available for use. Priority for operation and repair is provided to new unit over-degraded unit. Various reliability characteristics such as mean time to system failure (MTSF), availability, busy period of the repairman, expected number of visits by the repairman, and profit of the system have been obtained using regenerative point graphical technique. For particular case, the results for MTSF, availability, and profit function are obtained considering exponential, Rayleigh, and Weibull distributions for all random variables.

Abstract:Warm standby has been widely applied to power generation systems to ensure safe and reliable operation with lower energy consumption and shorter leading time compared with the case of hot standby and cold standby, respectively. Since there is a series of intermediate states between perfect functioning and complete failure for generating units, multi-state characteristics emerge in power generation systems. Considering different parameters of state transition time distributions before and after activation of standby units, as well as generating units with arbitrary state transition time distributions, this entails a need to propose a reliability evaluation technique to handle multi-state power generation systems considering warm standby with arbitrary state transition time distributions. An analytic method based on multi-state decision diagram (MSDD) is proposed in this paper for the reliability analysis of the proposed systems considering successful activation probabilities of warm standby units. The MSDD-based technique is applicable to multi-state power generation systems with arbitrary state transition time distributions for generating units. The proposed method enables the automated calculation of the system reliability and expected surplus performance. Furthermore, the optimum sequence of activating warm standby units that maximizes system reliability is formulated based on the proposed automatic reliability calculation method. Illustrative examples are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Abstract:Warm standby is an energy-saving redundancy technique that consumes less energy than a conventional hot standby method. It can be naturally integrated with an energy storage technique to enhance system reliability. However, the integration approach of both techniques and the advantage it affords to system reliability have not been reported in literature. This study resolves this limitation by formulating a novel reliability model for demand-based warm standby systems with capacity storage. In this model, the chronological characteristics of warm standby components are explicitly explored before and after their activation. Moreover, different utilization sequences of warm standby components and storage components are embedded to analyze the effects of these sequences on system reliability. A multi-valued decision diagram is developed to evaluate system reliability considering successful activation probabilities of warm standby components. This diagram is applicable to arbitrary component lifetime distributions and warm standby systems. Numerical examples are presented to verify the application of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:Standby redundancy can meet system safety requirements in industries with high reliability standards. To evaluate reliability of standby systems, failure dependency among components has to be considered especially when systems have load-sharing characteristics. In this paper, a reliability analysis and state transfer scheduling optimization framework is proposed for the load-sharing 1-out-of- N : G system equipped with M warm standby components and subject to continuous degradation process. First, the system reliability function considering multiple dependent components is derived in a recursive way. Then, a Monte Carlo method is developed and the closed Newton-Cotes quadrature rule is invoked for the system reliability quantification. Besides, likelihood functions are constructed based on the measurement information to estimate the model parameters of both active and standby components, whose degradation paths are modeled by the step-wise drifted Wiener processes. Finally, the system state transfer scheduling is optimized by the genetic algorithm to maximize the system reliability at mission time. The proposed methodology and its effectiveness are illustrated through a case study referring to a simplified aircraft hydraulic system.

Abstract:This paper discusses a type of redundancy that is typical in a multi-state system. It considers two interconnected multi-state systems where one multi-state system can satisfy its own stochastic demand and also can provide abundant resource (performance) to another system in order to improve the assisted system reliability. Traditional methods are usually not effective enough for reliability analysis for such multi-state systems because of the “dimensional curse” problem. This paper presents a new method for reliability evaluation for the repairable multi-state system considering such kind of redundancy. The proposed method is based on the combination of the universal generating function technique and random processes methods. The numerical example is presented to illustrate the proposed method.

Abstract:Research on analysis of replacement time in standby systems has focused on systems with binary-state standby components. However, when the standby components are multi-state, the replacement time depends on the state of the standby component when it is activated for replacement. This article considers the impacts of state-dependent random replacement times on 1-out-of-N systems consisting of multi-state standby components. Numerical algorithms for evaluating the multi-state standby system’s instantaneous availability, expected availability over system mission time and the expected mission completion time are proposed. A Markov state transition model is used to describe the component behaviour in standby mode. The time-to-failure of the operating component and the replacement time of the standby component can obey arbitrary types of distributions. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the proposed numerical algorithms. The effects of the number of standby components, different replacement time distributions and activation sequences are also discussed.

Abstract:This study develops novel reliability models for discrete-time cold standby repairable systems with unreliable repair facility and retrial mechanism. In view of the situation that the state of some engineering systems cannot be continuously monitored, discrete distribution is used to describe the distribution of random variables involved in this paper. For the case that multiple events can occur simultaneously in the discrete-time system model, the priority order of multiple events occurring simultaneously is defined. Two different models are proposed based on two types of priority rules. The retrial mechanism of the components is considered in the case that the failure information of the system components cannot be successfully transmitted to the repair facility. The preventive maintenance (PM) and repair after the breakdown of the repair facility are considered. The key reliability indices are derived by using the iterative algorithm of the difference equation and the generative function method. The algorithms for calculating system state probability, key reliability indices and cost-benefit ratio (CBR) are designed. To demonstrate the impact of each parameter on the system reliability indices, numerical results are provided. The optimal repair rate configuration scheme is chosen using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to achieve the lowest possible CBR. The impact of the system model with or without PM on stationary availability and CBR is shown. In addition, the impact of the number of system components on a series of system performance indices is analyzed, and the optimal number of components of the system corresponding to the minimum value of CBR is obtained.
