Abstract:After merger of Web Services and Semantic Web, Semantic Web Services (SWS) has received a lot of attention from researchers due to its ability of automatic Web Service discovery, execution and composition. Currently Web Service systems, which publish WSDL-described Web Services in UDDIs, cannot support SWS and UDDI has become the bottleneck of the whole system and would cause single node failure problems. Therefore, we propose a CAN-based P2P system to replace traditional UDDI, by distributing the functions of the UDDI among all the peers in the P2P network. At the same time, we design an ontology-based mechanism, guaranteeing every service would be registered on a specific peer in the CAN-based P2P network, according to the service's ontology. By replacing the UDDI, our system improves the scalability and stability of the SWS system, and realizes an efficient ontology-based discovery of Semantic Web Services.

Abstract:Modern scientific research is generating daunting amount of data that is commonly required to be combined together to service daily research endeavors. This paper introduces an ontology-based approach to publishing and composing data intensive web service. The approach distinguishes itself by its capability of dynamically evolving service interface and a data service composition graph (DSCG for short) planner for service composition, enabled by richly describing service capability using the semantic web languages. The advantage of the proposed approach is that the data service(DS for short) can adapt itself with client request dynamically, greatly improving its query service capability. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is scalable, and provides a better performance on handling time.

Abstract:The development of network technology and parallel computation provides dramatically opportunity for complicate Optimization Computing Research. This paper brings forward the concept of Optimization Computing Service, which is the theoretic foundation for designing the framework of Optimization Computing Service Platform-MetaSolver. MetaSlover consist of User Interface, Storage Service. Monitor, Dispatcher, Executor etc. Multiple solvers and multiple tasks could be scheduled and executed cooperatively and efficiently based on dynamic load balance algorithm and its implementation is detailed. Numerical experiments conducted on MetaSolver, which are applied to different fields, demonstrates that the Optimization Computing Service Platform is feasible and effective.

Abstract:Pervasive computing, the new computing paradigm aiming at providing services anywhere at anytime, poses great challenges on dynamic service composition. Existing service composition methods can hardly meet the requirements of dynamism and performance for pervasive computing. This paper proposes a Petri net based service model to formally describe the function of services and employs a parameter based service description to represent both semantic and syntactic of services. And services are pre-aggregated in a two-layered graph according to the input and output parameters of the service description. Furthermore, we design a novel service composition scheme to achieve the user requirement through a tree search algorithm. The theoretical analysis and comprehensive simulation experiments show that both service model and composition scheme are correct and efficient.

Abstract:Semantic information, which is well-regulated and easy to be retrieved, has greatly enriched the expressive ability of the Web. These advantages can be applied in Web Services to meet the increasing complexity of Web applications. In this paper, we propose a service composition approach. It combines the large-scaled Web Services and semantic information which is described in WSCpsila09. Besides, QoS has become a critical issue to evaluate the performance of Web applications. Being different from improving the QoS of single services, our approach focuses on the overall QoS of the service composition. The algorithm shows that the semantic information based and QoS driven approach improves the efficiency and QoS performance of service composition.

Abstract:The age of Big Data has inspired the appearance and application of data-intensive Web service. In most cases, multiple data-intensive services are assembled into a service composition to meet complicated requirements. As the number of Data-intensive Web services on the Internet is increasing rapidly and dramatically, traditional central service composition approaches have come to a performance bottleneck. This paper proposes a method for automatic data-intensive service composition, which can be executed in parallel. Firstly, the problem of automatic service composition is defined by combing the approaches of State Space Search and Planning Graph. Then, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to compose data-intensive Web service automatically. After that, more details are given to present the parallel optimization for the composition algorithm. A series of experiments show that the proposed parallel optimization method improves the efficiency of automatic Web service composition to a great extent.

CORBA and Agent based architecture 'Federated Services' is designed to meet this requirement. It divides the whole working environment into several groups that are intelligent and autonomous. CORBA is used to combine the services inside the group, so the architecture supports distributed and heterogeneous services; Agent assisted by XML is used to manage the group and group's communication, so the group is autonomous, intelligent and the communication is robust, secure. This architecture is a perfect way to build complex distributed computing systems like CSCW or VE.

Abstract:With the increasing scale of distributed resources, which couples a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources, storage systems, data sources and computational kernels, service management and scheduling is a complex undertaking. Since most services on the Internet are mutually independent, users have trouble in accessing several services to achieve a single purpose. Furthermore, the resources are owned by different individuals or organizations with their own policies, have different access and cost models, and have dynamically varying loads and availability.To address the confronted issues, we propose an adaptive approach in this paper for distributed services composition and allocation, which is service-centric and workflow-oriented. We use XML to describe the services by encoding such factors as resource configuration, performance, and service-specific capabilities, which enables services to be easily developed, composed, deployed, relocated, monitored and managed in distributed environments. We use service composition technology to construct composite service by combining several independent services, which can be considered as the element services of the composite service, executed as workflow process. The allocation of such element services Will be decided dynamically due to the economic objective function to address the issues of adaptation, availability, performance and economic cost.

Abstract:Web service composition has been increasingly challenging in recent years due to the escalating number of services and the diversity of task objectives. Despite many researches have already addressed the optimization of multiple Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, most of the currently available methods have to build a large web service dependency graph, which may incur excessive memory consumption and extreme inefficiency. To address these issues, we present a novel web service composition method by optimizing composition-segment candidates. Firstly, we formalize the web service composition problem as a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model and introduce some effective techniques for complex cases, and then a standard solver can be applied to this model. Afterwards, a candidate optimization method is proposed to solve the MILP model efficiently, which runs sharply fast without building a web service dependency graph. Experimental results on both Web Service Challenge 2009’s datasets and substantial datasets randomly generated show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-art while achieving a much ideal tradeoff among all the objectives with better performance.

Abstract:SOC (service-oriented computing) is the new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing, whose vision is to integrate autonomic Web services as distributed components into a complicated application. Current composed service processes are mostly generated in the syntactic level and in a manual way. The limitation of such a rigid approach is that it does not allow businesses to dynamically change partners and services like in "framework for semantic Web process composition" by K. Sivashanmugam. Some semi-automatic Web service composition frameworks are present based on both semantic matchmaking and process recommendation in terms of semantic description of user requirements and concrete Web services. However, two problems need to be crossed over in these frameworks. How to design the activities in the process with the exact clarity that can be bound to concrete Web service, and how to deal with the problem that the output message type of the preceding service is subtly heterogeneous with the input one of the subsequent service? This paper addresses these two problems and proposes a solution in SEWSIP, a semantic based Web service integration platform. A hierarchical activity mechanism used to control activity clarity and a message transforming mechanism used to eliminate message type heterogeneity, are mainly discussed.

Abstract:Web service composition is gaining a considerable momentum as an approach to the effective integration of distributed, heterogeneous, and autonomous application. Current composed service processes are mostly generated in the syntactic level and in a manual way. The limitation of the approach is that it does not allow business to dynamic change partners and services. In order to avoid this disadvantage, it is critical to map complex business from abstract process to executable flows according to application domain semantics and dynamic business requirements. In this paper, we first present a semantic-based Web service composition framework called SWSCF based on both semantic process recommendation and semantic matchmaking. Then, we analyze some key technologies including: (1) Introducing hierarchical activity mechanism for dynamic decomposition of business requirements to find a suitable semantic process template; (2) Searching and selecting service chain to match a semantic activity template which is used to specify an abstract activity; (3) Devising heterogeneous message transforming mechanism to eliminate the incompatible message types during generating data flow of an executable process. Furthermore, by comparison with some service composition frameworks, we prove SWSCF to be more flexible and effective.

Abstract:Automated Web service composition, which refers to the creation of a complex application from pre-existing building blocks (Web services), has been an active research topic in the past years. The advantage of having an automated composition system is that it allows users to create new applications simply by providing the required parameters, instead of having to manually assemble the services. Existing approaches to automated composition rely on planning techniques or evolutionary computing (EC) to modify and optimise composition solutions directly in their tree/graph form, a complex process that requires several constraints to be considered before each alteration. To improve the search efficiency and simplify the checking of constraints, this work proposes an indirect Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO)-based approach. The key idea of the indirect approach is to optimise a service queue which is then decoded into a composition solution by using a planning algorithm. This approach is compared to a previously proposed graph-based direct representation method, and experiment results show that the indirect representation can lead to a greater (or equivalent) quality while requiring a lower execution time. The analysis conducted shows that this is due to the design of the algorithms used for building and evaluating the fitness of solutions.

Abstract:Web services are basic functions of a software system to support the concept of service-oriented architecture. They are often composed together to provide added values, known as web service composition. Researchers often employ Evolutionary Computation techniques to efficiently construct composite services with near-optimized functional quality (i.e., Quality of Semantic Matchmaking) or non-functional quality (i.e., Quality of Service) or both due to the complexity of this problem. With a significant increase in service composition requests, many composition requests have similar input and output requirements but may vary due to different preferences from different user segments. This problem is often treated as a multi-objective service composition so as to cope with different preferences from different user segments simultaneously. Without taking a multi-objective approach that gives rise to a solution selection challenge, we perceive multiple similar service composition requests as jointly forming an evolutionary multi-tasking problem in this work. We propose an effective permutation-based evolutionary multi-tasking approach that can simultaneously generate a set of solutions, with one for each service request. We also introduce a neighborhood structure over multiple tasks to allow newly evolved solutions to be evaluated on related tasks. Our proposed method can perform better at the cost of only a fraction of time, compared to one state-of-art single-tasking EC-based method. We also found that the use of the proper neighborhood structure can enhance the effectiveness of our approach.

Efficient Composition of Semantic Web Services with End-to-end QoS Optimization

Abstract:The efficiency of QoS-aware service composition is important since most service composition problems are known to be NP-hard. With the growing number of web services, service composition is like a decision problem on selecting services or/and execution plans to satisfy the users’ end-to-end QoS requirements （e.g. response time, throughput）. Composite services with the same functionality may have dif-ferent execution plans, which may cause different end-to-end QoS. This paper presents a model combining semantic data-links and QoS, which leads to an efficient approach to automatic construction of a composite service with optimal end-to-end QoS. The approach is based on a greedy algorithm to select both services and execution plans for composite services. Empirical and theoretical analyses of the approach show that its time complexity is O（mn2） for a repository with n services and an ontology with m concepts. Moreover, the approach increases linearly in time when using an index to search services in the repository. Tests with a repository with 20 000 services and an ontology with 300 000 concepts show that the algorithm significantly outperforms current existing algorithms in terms of composition efficiency while achieving optimal end-to-end QoS.
Towards Efficiency of QoS-driven Semantic Web Service Composition for Large-Scale Service-Oriented Systems.

Abstract:Quality-of-Service (QoS) performance guarantee for service-oriented systems (SOS) has become a critical problem. With the increasing number of offered services comes the challenge of efficiently building large-scale SOS to meet the required QoS criteria. Optimization of QoS-driven semantic Web service composition is known to be NP-hard. We address the efficiency issue by developing a polynomial time algorithm (QDA) for shortest sequence composition. We use dynamic programming to find service candidates for each execution. When all the services are searched, we use a depth-first trace back to derive the execution plan. We have tested our approach under Web-scale demands 20,000 services and 150,000 semantic concepts. In comparison with existing approaches, our experimental results show that QDA can be used to solve large-scale service composition problem effectively and efficiently with QoS guarantee.

Abstract:Scientific collaboration has become more and more important in current scientific research. A collaboration environment which simplifies integration and collaboration of heterogeneous scientific resources, for instance scientific computing software and scientific apparatuses, can accelerate progress of scientific research remarkably. We present a novel middleware to facilitate development of distributed and collaborative application for scientific research. A service-oriented collaboration bus is proposed to enable scientific resources to be plugged in and users to interact with these resources collaboratively and transparently. Collaboration bus engines in different organizations can inter-operate with each other to support distributed collaboration. We also show our prototype implementation of this middleware and a demonstration of Collaborative Visualization System for Seismic Data in earth science.

Abstract:Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) enables the composition of loosely coupled service agents provided with varying Quality of Service (QoS) levels, effectively forming a multiagent system (MAS). Selecting a (near-)optimal set of services for a composition in terms of QoS is crucial when many functionally equivalent services are available. As the number of distributed services, especially in the cloud, is rising rapidly, the impact of the network on the QoS keeps increasing. Despite this and opposed to most MAS approaches, current service approaches depend on a centralized architecture which cannot adapt to the network. Thus, we propose a scalable distributed architecture composed of a flexible number of distributed control nodes. Our architecture requires no changes to existing services and adapts from a centralized to a completely distributed realization by adding control nodes as needed. Also, we propose an extended QoS aggregation algorithm that allows to accurately estimate network QoS. Finally, we evaluate the benefits and optimality of our architecture in a distributed environment.

Abstract:The Semantic Web (Berners-Lee, Hendler, & Lassila, 2001) has become increasingly significant as it proposes an evolution of the current World Wide Web from a web of documents to a distributed and decentralised, global knowledge-base. Based on the notion of interlinked resources grounded within formally defined ontologies, it promises to be an enabling technology for the automation of many Web-based tasks, by facilitating a shared understanding of a domain through inference over shared knowledge models. Semantic Work Environment (SWE) applications use Semantic Web techniques to support the work of the user by collecting knowledge about the current needs in a specific activity, and providing both inferred and augmented knowledge that can then be integrated into current work. Web Services have emerged as distributed, heterogeneous software components that provide machine access to the services otherwise offered on the Web through Web pages. Built upon defacto Web standards for syntax, communication protocols, and markup languages such as XML, Web services provide a near ubiquitous mechanism for communication between applications and agents. In addition, such services can be composed to provide additional functionality, thus facilitating the rapid construction of new services. However, the dynamic use of services is limited by the need to agree a-priori upon data models and interface definitions. By coupling Web service technology with Semantic Web technology, Semantic Web Services can partially relax these constraints, both in the dynamic use of services, and in the data models shared by such services. Several examples of such services have been developed, for example, the ITTALKS services (Cost, Finin, & Joshi, 2002), which are considered in this chapter.
