Abstract:Reliable communication is essential for the success of global collaborative software development efforts. Software development organizations and methodologies must be tailored to avoid communications issues which may result in misunderstood requirements or missed project milestones. Extreme Programming (XP) was adopted for the Lattice® Trading System reengineering project - a globally distributed software development effort. Customers in Boston worked with the offshore development in Hangzhou. Business knowledge and requirements were transferred iteratively throughout the project duration. Steps in the development process were executed at different sites at different times, depending on skill set match. An iterative development process reduced communication risk as development for one phase and communication for the next phase could be conducted in parallel. This approach allowed the team to avoid most of the communication delay and improved the quality of communication as well.

Abstract:The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is an emerging standard for capturing business processes. However, BPMN lacks a formal semantics and many of its features are subject to interpretation, which is hindered the BPMN as a standard to statically check the semantic correctness of models. The fact that BPMN integrates constructs from graph-oriented process definition languages with features for macro of advanced constructs and the transmission of messages between two participants, make it challenging to provide a formal semantics of BPMN. Even. more define a semantic that can be used to analyst BPMN models. This paper proposes a formal semantics of BPMN defined in terms of a mapping to YAWL nets, for which efficient analysis techniques exists. The proposed mapping has been implemented as a tool that generates code in the ProM.

Abstract:Due to the absence of commonly accepted conceptual and formal foundations for workflow management, and more generally Business Process Management (BPM), a plethora of approaches to process modelling and execution exists both in academia and in industry. The introduction of workflow patterns provided a deep and language independent understanding of modelling issues and requirements encountered in business process specification. They provide a comparative insight into various approaches to process specification and serve as guidance for language and tool development. YAWL (Yet Another Workflow Language) is a novel and formally defined workflow language based on workflow patterns and Petri nets, thus leveraging off both practical and theoretical insights in the field of BPM. This chapter provides an overview of this language and its corresponding open source support environment.

Abstract:The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is a widely used standard notation for defining intra- and inter-organizational workflows. However, the informal description of the BPMN execution semantics leads to different interpretations of BPMN elements and difficulties in checking behavioral properties. In this article, we propose a formalization of the execution semantics of BPMN that, compared to existing approaches, covers more BPMN elements while also facilitating property checking. Our approach is based on a higher-order transformation from BPMN models to graph transformation systems. To show the capabilities of our approach, we implemented it as an open-source web-based tool.

Abstract:Based on a rigorous analysis of existing workflow management systems and workflow languages, a new workflow language is proposed: yet another workflow language (YAWL). To identify the differences between the various languages, we have collected a fairly complete set of workflow patterns. Based on these patterns we have evaluated several workflow products and detected considerable differences in their ability to capture control flows for non-trivial workflow processes. Languages based on Petri nets perform better when it comes to state-based workflow patterns. However, some patterns (e.g. involving multiple instances, complex synchronisations or non-local withdrawals) are not easy to map onto (high-level) Petri nets. This inspired us to develop a new language by taking Petri nets as a starting point and adding mechanisms to allow for a more direct and intuitive support of the workflow patterns identified. This paper motivates the need for such a language, specifies the semantics of the language, and shows that soundness can be verified in a compositional way. Although YAWL is intended as a complete workflow language, the focus of this paper is limited to the control-flow perspective.

Abstract:The core modeling component of the YAWL System is the Editor. This tool enables workflow designers to graphically define complex process models, and to analyze and export these models to the Engine. Specifically, the Editor is a rich client application offering visual support for the definition of the process control logic, the data associated with the process and its tasks, and the organizational resources participating in the process. An important aspect of the Editor is the provision of sophisticated logic to verify the produced models. Through this capability, a designer can pinpoint syntactical and semantic issues at a mouse click, so as to avoid potentially costly mistakes before deploying a process to a workflow engine. The main driver behind the development of a visual editor for YAWL was the necessity to speed up the creation of process models and to foster the uptake of the language by nontechnical users. In light of this, the Editor had to fulfill the requirements of free availability, portability, ease of use, and interoperability. The tool had to be freely available; therefore, it was decided to release it under the open source LGPL license. Portability was guaranteed by developing the Editor in JavaTM and avoiding any code dependency on OS-specific libraries. Ease of use was achieved by providing the Editor with an intuitive user interface on top of a core graphical component based on extensions to the JGraph libraries.1 Interoperability was supported by the definition of a common XML format and a set of API calls for the exchange of workflow specifications between an editor and the runtime environment (cf. Chap. 9). The interaction between design and runtime environment in the YAWL System is depicted in Fig. 8.1.

Abstract:With the growing interest in open source software in general and business process management and workflow systems in particular, it is worthwhile investigating the state of open source workflow management. The plethora of these offerings (recent surveys such as [4,6], each contain more than 30 such systems) triggers the following two obvious questions: (1) how do these systems compare to each other; and (2) how do they compare to their commercial counterparts. To answer these questions we have undertaken a detailed analysis of three of the most widely used open source workflow management systems [1]: jBPM, OpenWFE, and Enhydra Shark. Another obvious candidate would have been the open-source workflow management system YAWL (www.yawlfoundation.org). However, given the authors' close involvement in the development of YAWL, we did not include it in our evaluation.

Abstract:How to develop the software process models that satisfy the organization's standards and the characteristics of software projects, and improve it continuously, is difficulty for software organizations. A process management tool named JBPM (Jade Bird Process Management) proposes a good solution for this issue. JBPM supports component based process development and hierarchical management mechanism which is illumined by CMM. In order to provide a unified framework for all processes in different projects across the organization, JBPM employs the software lifecycle process framework in ISO/IEC std. 12207 and IEEE std. 1517, and use it as a general requirement specification for those processes.

It is supported by various modelling tools but so far no systems can directly execute BPMN models. The Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL) on the other hand is a mainly block-structured language supported by several execution platforms. In the current setting, mapping BPMN models to BPEL code is a necessary step towards unified and standards-based business process development environments. It turns out that this mapping is challenging from a scientific viewpoint as BPMN and BPEL represent two fundamentally different classes of languages. Existing methods for mapping BPMN to BPEL impose limitations on the structure of the source model, especially with respect to cycles. This report proposes a technique that overcomes these limitations. Beyond its direct relevance in the context of BPMN and BPEL, this technique addresses difficult problems that arise generally when translating between floow-based languages with parallelism.

Abstract:. Workflow technology is the core technology that enables enterprise business process modeling, simulation analysis, optimization, and business process management and integration, ultimately achieving business process automation. Studying and promoting workflow technology has important practical significance for enterprise informatization. With the globalization of market competition, enterprises must be able to quickly restructure their business processes to improve their competitiveness, which has led to widespread attention and research on their workflow issues. However, the current workflow technology is still not mature enough, especially when business processes involve collaboration between different enterprises, there are many deficiencies in interoperability. The emergence and development of web services have effectively solved this problem, so JBPM workflow technology based on web services has made up for the shortcomings of current workflow technology and has become a development trend. Through a specific description of the current situation of fixed asset management in the power industry, a demand analysis of the power fixed asset management system was carried out, and the overall design of the system was carried out. The standard J2EE three-layer software architecture system was adopted, with a component-based and object-oriented development mode as the overall design and development principle. Targeting the characteristics of wide scope, multiple departments, large quantity, large amount, and fast update of fixed asset management in the power industry, Strive for comprehensive and detailed functionality, easy and simple operation, and emphasize network information exchange and sharing. Finally, using the MVC pattern for detailed design and combining Struts, Hibernate, and other frameworks with the JBPM framework for specific implementation development, ultimately achieving the comprehensive goal of strengthening management, reducing labor intensity

Abstract:In his paper “Approaches to Modeling Business Processes. A Critical Analysis of BPMN, Workflow Patterns and YAWL”, Egon Börger criticizes the work of the Workflow Patterns Initiative in a rather provocative manner. Although the workflow patterns and YAWL are well established and frequently used, Börger seems to misunderstand the goals and contributions of the Workflow Patterns Initiative. Therefore, we put the workflow patterns and YAWL in their historic context. Moreover, we address some of the criticism of Börger by pointing out the real purpose of the workflow patterns and their relationship to formal languages (Petri nets) and real-life WFM/BPM systems.

Abstract:In the literature, most scheduling models are developed using mathematical methods such as programming models or graphic models like Petri net. Although they are efficient in computing, they are difficult to build and understand by industry users. In order to make the scheduling model more capable and practical for industrial use, a new scheduling model based on the workflow management technique (SMWMT) is proposed here. It is a process-oriented compound model that features various process constraints definitions, activity behaviour descriptions, flexible resource definition and mapping, and graphic presentations that offer intuitional understandings to users. The corresponding scheduling system based on workflow simulation is provided. A cost-oriented iterative algorithm is proposed to enhance the scheduling performance. The example of the model and the simulation results show that the proposed model and scheduling method are effective.

A process management tool supporting component based process development and hierarchical management mechanism which is named JBPM(Jade Bird Process Management) makes use of the two-layer hierarchical process management idea of "organization-project" in CMM, and employs the software process requirement specification and software lifecycle process framework from ISO/IEC std. 12207 and IEEE std. 1517, and introduces the component-based development methods to the software process development. JBPM provides tool supporting for the above, and thus proposes a good solution for the issue of process management for software organizations.
DPLWN: A Novel Model for Designing and Implementing Dynamic Business Processes and Process Changes

Abstract:In order to adapt to the inconstancy of business environments and service requirements, a model of dynamic workflow is defined. It can be used to analyze and implement dynamic processes and process changes automatically. The dynamics of processes depends on many factors including the current state, input data, and customer-defined functions and so on. The effectiveness of process changes can be evaluated through checking both functional and non-functional factors, including soundness, I/O equivalence, compatibility, QoS, and cost of change deployment. The effectiveness of process changes is a paramount indicator to decide the rationality of process changes. Process dynamics may depend on both structural changes and functional changes which constitutes the two methods of process change deployment. Before changes are made, the effectiveness is considered to make a final decision. This paper adopts a DPLWN (Dynamic Programmable Logic Workflow) model based on Petri nets to design and implement dynamic business processes and analyze process changes by presenting an algorithm to evaluate the effectiveness. A prototype is given to deploy online and offline process changes.

Abstract:In the long-term evolution of a Software Product Line (SPL), how to ensure the alignment between the reference and application architectures is a critical problem. Existing ad-hoc methods for architecture synchronization cannot ensure the completeness. In this paper, we propose a model-driven method for synchronized SPL architecture evolution using bidirectional transformation, a well-developed technique with solid mathematical foundation. Based on the model-based architecture representation, we capture the variability-intensive consistency relations between reference and application architectures and specify them with Beanbag, a declarative language supporting operation-based synchronization. Then, with the generated synchronizer and additional mechanisms, we can achieve coordinated architecture evolution through periodic synchronizations.

Abstract:Currently technologies of Web services have greatly developed and provided a new application platform for CSCW. For a business process across enterprises, cooperation of multiple Web services is usually required to achieve the final goal. However, most current Web services choreography proposals, such as BPEL4WS or WSCI, only provide a fixed execution flow, lacking of flexibility and adaptability. In this paper, we propose a flexible workflow model TDWF, which can specify the execution process of Web services according to task dependency information, so that the Web services can be composed dynamically. We also put forward an algorithm to verify the correctness of the composition process. Besides, the proposed compensation mechanism of workflow could properly satisfy the requirements of end users
