Abstract:Recent GPU ray tracers can already achieve performance competitive to that of their CPU Counterparts. Nevertheless, these systems call not yet fully exploit file capabilities of modern GPUs and can only handle medium-sized, static scenes.We present all octree construction algorithm for the GPU that achieves real-time performance by heavily exploiting the hardware, which has been observed to give Superior performance in ray tracing compared to other acceleration structures. We use streaming construction with the Surface area heuristic (SAH) that significantly increase the coherence of memory accesses during construction of file octree.

Abstract:Due to acceleration algorithms of ray-tracing only designed for specified GPU or multi-core CPU,it is challenge to design a cross platform ray-tracing algorithm for real-time applications.This paper presents a cross-platform algorithm of ray-tracing dynamic scenes based on OpenCL.By exploiting parallel processing ability of general purpose GPU,three components of ray-tracing,i.e.,KD-Tree construction,scene traversal and shading,are performed on GPU,which are scheduled by CPU.Thus GPU computing ability is exploited thoroughly and data transmission overhead is reduced efficiently.By designing algorithms of parallel partitions and SAH,proposing strategies of compact data management and offset mark based leaf node storage,a high quality KD-Tree for dynamic scene is constructed on GPU in real-time,which will effectively facilitates scene traversal.The tree construction algorithm is breadth-first and suitable for large scale parallel implementation on both NVIDIA GPU and AMD GPU.Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is capable of ray-tracing a middle scale dynamic scene in real-time on both NVIDIA GPU and AMD GPU.

Abstract:This paper uses parallel multi-core architectures and dynamic generated data structure (BVH) to real-time render highly complex dynamic deformable scenes, In particular, bounding volume hierarchies (BVHs) are efficient acceleration structures that handle complex triangle distributions and can accommodate deformable scenes by updating the bounding primitive without restructuring the entire tree. this method can render large outdoor complex dynamic mesh scenes or archaeological site acquired by scanner with high image quality with deformable scenes. Our method utilizes the hierarchical spatial structure to calculate the set of point-sample dynamically instead of randomly. It simplifies the calculation of choosing the set of point-sample and reduces the requirement of memory. It is convenient to conduct view-dependent multi-resolution rendering with LOD control. The pre-computed data structures employed by our method allow for interactive dynamic updates of the scenes. we have used multi-core to render dynamic deformable object in complex scenes, One CPU is used to handling dynamic scenes in a highly parallel point-based rendering system and other CPU is responsible for rendering.BVH-based data structure is especially suitable for multi-core hardware architectures. Instead of trying to do a full BVH rebuild per frame, we avoid any kind of scalability issues by rebuilding asynchronously over the course of multiple frames, and in the meantime rely on refitting, which parallelizes quite well.

Abstract:Research focuses on a new efficient screen space approach for high complex dynamic scenes in real-time rendering. The method renders large outdoor complex dynamic mesh scenes or archaeological sites acquired by scanner with high image quality. The proposed algorithm utilizes the hierarchical spatial structure to calculate the set of dynamic point-sample instead of random point-sample set. It simplifies the calculation of choosing the set of point-sample. Also this reduces the requirement of memory. When compared to the randomized z-buffer algorithm it has very less redundant points, it is necessary to implement interpolation because all pixels in the screen are covered. It is convenient to conduct view-dependent multi-resolution rendering with LOD control. The pre-computed data structures employed by the proposed algorithm allow the interactive dynamic updates on the scenes.

Abstract:To obtain good performance on the GPU hardware, it is necessary to design algorithms to manage data, access memory under GPU memory hierarchy, and schedule more efficient threads. In this paper, we propose an efficient data management and task management designed for GPU based ray tracing. Due to the dynamic and uncertainty in ray tracing, we design data-management layer and task-management layer combined with fuzzy spatial analysis, use the two-level ray sorting and a ray bucket structure to reorganize ray data, then a warp's threads can be scheduled to access coherent geometry and nodes data, reduce memory bandwidth, and dispatch the data locally. We schedule tasks in data-driven execution according to coherent data, propose an adaptive ray compaction to eliminate inactive threads, maintain task efficiency of threads in a warp, and design two heuristics to decrease the compaction cost. On the basis of it, we also introduce a memory-optimized dynamic traversal management to reduce incoherent memory access, and avoid frequent sorting computation and compaction operations. Our experiments demonstrate all of these work combined can achieve good performance.

Abstract:We present a novel parallel acceleration structure construction and traversal algorithm designed to efficiently exploit the massive parallel computing cores on the Graphic Processing Unit(GPU) to improve the render performance. Our associated data structure is called multi-split KD-tree or MSKD, which focuses on fast generating and efficiently traveling multiple child nodes hierarchy in parallel. At build-time, we introduce a multi-split node generation method to split along three-dimension axes into eight child nodes once, and gather quickly high-quality child nodes even at early construction phase. During traversal, we propose a progressive traversal to fast decide the visiting order for multiple child nodes. Then, we use a dynamic ray transfer to adaptively drive the traversal tasks execution on the GPU. Our experiments with this hierarchy show the construction and traversal performance improvement for ray tracing using MSKD compared to previous methods.

Abstract:In order to real-time rendering complex scenes, many algorithms need a multi-resolution representation data structure which can support good rendering performance. In this paper we introduce a novel stream-based (and out-of-core) point preprocessing algorithm which generating multi- resolution hierarchy based on bounding spheres by processing points in an orderly sequential way and sweeping double-plane along a spatial dimension. The major advantages of this novel concept are: (I) our algorithm can be used to in support of other stream operators, (2) generating a multi-resolution model representation, (3) low main-memory usage. Abstract:Octrees are attractive data structures for rendering of volumes, as they provide simultaneously uniform and hierarchical data encapsulation. We present a simple and efficient algorithm for interactive ray tracing on a hybrid architectures, which takes advantage of the parallelism present by heavily exploiting the hardware for the CPU and GPU, which has been observed to give superior performance in ray tracing compared to other acceleration structures. Instead of alternating between phases of rendering and (potentially infrequent) building, our approach exploits the parallelism inherent in a multi-core system by continuously and asynchronously rebuilding new octree (potentially over the course of multiple frames) while the threads in the GPU concurrently update and traverse the most recently built octree.

Abstract:Tracing secondary rays, such as reflection, refraction and shadow rays, can often be the most costly step in a modern real-time ray tracer. In this paper, we propose a new approach to ray tracing on GPU. Our approach is especially efficient for incoherent rays. Combined with the common packets ray tracing, we propose a different data-parallel approach to ray tracing on GPU, in which individual ray intersect with k different nodes/triangles in the same operation. Besides, we add some additional information in the construction of acceleration structure, and propose a new approach to travel the acceleration structure. Our acceleration structure needn't collapse, so it could be built very efficiently, which is promising for dynamic scenes. Despite this approach is slower for primary rays, but demonstrate that it performs better than those techniques as soon as incoherent rays are considered. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Abstract:Complex shading often associates with long shaders and huge data access. To obtain good performance on current generation GPU hardware, it is necessary to design some algorithms to manage data, schedule more efficient threads, and memory access under the hierarchy of GPU memory. In this paper, we propose an approach to accelerate the rendering process for complex shaders by analyzing and sorting shading jobs according to their complexity and potential memory access. We show that by sorting these shading jobs in three levels of memory hierarchies and reorganizing threads block according to the complexity, all shading jobs are scheduled in order, and we can significantly improve cache utilization and GPU hardware utilization, especially for poor performance caused by large branching. All sorting work are processed on CPU with plentiful logic function, and can be processed in a very efficient manner, compared with the expensive compaction operation on GPU. Our experiments with this hierarchy demonstrate improvements against a SIMD packet tracing with compaction on GPU.

Abstract:Ray tracing is of great use for computational electromagnetics, such as the well-known shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) method. In this paper, the kd-tree data structure, coupled with the mailbox technique, is proposed to accelerate the ray tracing in the SBR. The kd-tree is highly effective in handling the irregularly distribution of patches of the target, while the repeatedly intersection tests between the ray and the patch when using space division acceleration structures can be eliminated through the mailbox technique. Numerical results show excellent agreement with the measured data and the exact solution, and demonstrate that the kd-tree as well as the mailbox technique can greatly reduce the computation time.

Abstract:Although regarded as a standard heuristic for constructing a kd-tree, Surface Area Heuristic (SAH) suffers from degrading traversal performance as well as unnecessary acceleration structure construction due to its assumption of uniform ray distribution. In this paper, first, we propose a Grid based Ray Distribution Heuristic (GRDH) to construct a high quality kd-tree. The information of ray distribution is sampled and recorded in a sparse grid, which is also utilized to partition primitives efficiently. The heuristic only evaluating traversal cost on limited splitting candidates, is fast and easy to be implemented. Then, we introduce a novel ray tracing pipeline with two-pass construction and two-pass tracing routine to enable an on-demand construction algorithm. In the pipeline, after constructing a partially structured kd-tree, rays are classified by whether triggering transitions to construct unstructured leaf nodes, and being traced in different tracing passes. For on-demand construction, this raises the barrier of interleaving with traversal routine, as well as enables the algorithm to be flexible on multi-core computation platform. Additionally, GRDH is also combined into on-demand construction for high traversal performance. The experimental results demonstrate that the on-demand GRDH construction algorithm can achieve a speedup of 1.63 ~ 1.95 in overall frame performance for scenes with more than 360K primitives.

Abstract:The ray tracing algorithm is well-known for its ability to generate photo-realistic rendering effects. Recent years have witnessed a renewed momentum in pushing it to real-time for better user experience. Today the construction of acceleration structures, e.g., kd-tree, has become the bottleneck of ray tracing. A dedicated hardware architecture, FastTree, was proposed for kd-tree construction by adopting a fully parallel construction algorithm. FastTree was validated by an FPGA prototype and evaluated as an ASIC implementation. Experiment result shows FastTree outperforms existing hardware construction engines by a factor of nearly 4X at a similar area and power budget.

Abstract:This paper presents a new 3D ray tracing acceleration technique based on the kd-tree algorithm for predicting the radio coverage in complex indoor environment. For each ray emitted from the transmitter, all the valid ray propagation paths can be searched for by the hybrid ray tracing model which combines the shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) and the image method. The kd-tree algorithm is mainly used to accelerate the intersection test of ray tracing. In addition, the receiver power strength can be calculated based on geometrical optics (GO) and uniform theory of diffraction (UTD). As expected, the proposed method performs higher superiority than the conventional ray tracing model in terms of computational efficiency. Meanwhile, it also shows good agreement with measurements and the Winprop's simulated results with respect to computational accuracy.

Abstract:Ray tracing has long been considered as the next-generation technology for graphics rendering. Recently, there has been strong momentum to adopt ray tracing--based rendering techniques on consumer-level platforms due to the inability of further enhancing user experience by increasing display resolution. On the other hand, the computing workload of ray tracing is still overwhelming. A 10-fold performance gap has to be narrowed for real-time applications, even on the latest graphics processing units (GPUs). As a result, hardware acceleration techniques are critical to delivering a satisfying level performance while at the same time meeting an acceptable power budget. A large body of research on ray-tracing hardware has been proposed over the past decade. This article is aimed at providing a timely survey on hardware techniques to accelerate the ray-tracing algorithm. First, a quantitative profiling on the ray-tracing workload is presented. We then review hardware techniques for the main functional blocks in a ray-tracing pipeline. On such a basis, the ray-tracing microarchitectures for both ASIC and processors are surveyed by following a systematic taxonomy.

Abstract:This work proposes a fully parallel kd-tree construction algorithm, which depends on the Morton code to identify all candidate split planes and derive their exact positions in parallel. Our techniques drastically shorten construction process. Experimental results on a set of frequently used scenes prove that the proposed kd-tree construction algorithm outperforms a state-of-the-art algorithm kd-tree construction algorithm by over one order of magnitude.

Abstract:Ray tracing is a widely used rendering technique in computer graphics, and its intense computational requirement prohibits real-time ray tracing applications wide use in consumer markets. One main feature of ray tracing is parallelism and the mainstream computer market is switching to systems with multi-core. In this paper, in order to accelerate ray tracing to achieve real-time processing, we propose a data parallel kd-tree ray tracing algorithm on Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.) which is a state-of-the-art multicore processor. This paper expounds the feasibility and key issues of kd-tree ray tracing on the Cell/B.E. processor and introduces the implementation and Cell-specific in ray tracing program design. The results highlight that our parallel algorithm for kd-tree ray tracing is scalable with a matrix of cores, resolutions or different object models. The execution time reduces from several minutes to several seconds.
